It's starting to go to far and sound insane. I shouldn't have to explain my picks or base my picks off what works best for you guys. It's not fair how im being attacked for taking 2 players that I feel are great. It's my draft board. I have a QB and a backup already. I have a RB already. The RB class is deep and IMO im not missing out on a Peyton Manning or even a Andrew Luck so im ok with MY picks. The attacks on me for my picks is immature and premature. I have several more picks. And it's been no fights and I hold no grudges on this forum. I'm a Colts fan and always have been. We are not working together in the draft though. Some of the people fussing I actually tried to trade back. It's a draft and nothing is guaranteed. Why make this personal or take it personal.

Just curious, what is your projection for your starting 5 on the OL now? Whos making the move to OT or riding the bench?

Tremaine Edmunds is a 3-4 OLB, and we still run a 3-4 for the most part unless we changed it to a 4-3. So I meant 3-4 unless there is a scheme change here that I'm unaware of.

You might have missed this... Sounds like we are definitely going back to a 4-3 base.

Edit:  this story points to 4-3 base as well

Baseball is a right handed game...obviously

You cant play the infield (except for first base) if you are left handed.

There are no left-handed catchers because most batters are rightys and would make a throw to second base more difficult..

Is football a 'right handed' game?. Is blocking a side dominant thing?

In other words..If you are right handed, do you naturally block more effectively going right?

Is that another reason why good left tackles are rare?.

For blocking, sort of yes, but mostly no. Because of the way you block in pass protection, you typically want to have your inside foot forward a bit in your stance, so as to make the inside rush harder and push to the outside (this is more noticeable with OTs, but happens with OGs as well). People have dominant hands/feet and feel more comfortable with one foot forward over the other (at least at first), but I found even by the High school level Id become comfortable in my stance on either side of the line. Just took a bit of time/practice to get used to it.

It shouldnt really matter at an NFL level what hand you are when it comes to playing LT. Its more about being matched up against the top pass rusher on the other team that makes it hard, plus the fact that the QB has times when he cant see the rush coming, and cant take the proper action to avoid the rush, leaving you on a bit of an island out there by yourself.

Hooker:  Pro-bowl potential, hope his injury doesn't keep him from reaching it

Wilson - battled injury, didn't see much out of him

Basham - saw very little productivity out of him

Banner - didn't make the team

Stewart - didn't see much out of him

Mack - true playmaker/differencemaker as a complimentary running back.  Needs to prove he can be a #1

Hairston - seemed serviceable thrust into the duties asked of him

    Walker - backup LB/special-teams player

I hate to say it, but it sure looked to me like Fleener, Allen, Hilton, Brazill, Chapman and Ballard collectively contributed more their rookie years than the above 8 players.  I left Luck off the list because he was a no-brainer.

Am I missing something? Was Ballard's first draft really any better than Grigson's?

Id also like to refute this as well.

People seem to be expecting the world from 1st yr pass rushers. Did you know that from 2006 to 2016, that 1ST ROUND pass rushers averaged just a touch over 4 sacks in their rookie seasons?? Expecting anything more that what Basham got (2 sacks and a FF) from a 3rd round pick is kind of ridiculous, especially when you compare how little he actually saw the field compared to your average 1st round pick.

1st round rookie pass rushers averaged 45.8% of defensive snaps in 2017 (thats including Jonathan Allens 14.5%, which was only because he missed 10 games due to injury). Looking at Basham, he managed to get his stats on 20.8% of the Colts defensive snaps. He did about half of what is considered average for a 1st round pick, with less than half the opportunity that a 1st round pick was given.

If anything, he is playing above average for a 3rd round rookie. The big test for him will be to see if he makes the jump that highly touted pass rushers tend to make in their 2nd/3rd yr.

Are we acting like Grigson didn't have a great 2012 draft?? He won Executive of the year for that draft class.

Obviously Ballards first draft didnt win him executive of the year. That doesnt mean it wasnt good. Just that it wasnt a league best effort, which is a tall order for any rookie GM.

The important thing going forward is that Ballard has to be consistently good, unlike Griggles, who had one stellar draft and then dropped the ball every year after that.

    By the way....

I think this confirms the thought expressed here a few weeks ago that Ballard is trying to gain compensatory draft picks for 2019.    I think at last mention, the Colts were in line for a 4 and a 5.

I don't pretend to know how the formula works, but I believe one aspect is FA signings prior to June 1 count toward the formula.   FA players signed June 1 or later do not.

So, I'm expecting Ballard to make his move right after that deadline.   I hope we'll find another WR and perhaps a LB like Toomer?

If I'm off on that deadline date, I don't think it's by much.   I'm sure someone will correct me.   Normally that might be Superman, but he appears to be on a short temporary hiatus.   I'm sure he'll be back right before the draft...

Im not 100% sure on this, but I feel like the cutoff date is in May.

I think that was the whole deal behind the May 9th Tender that the Pats slapped on Blount last yr. If he got signed to another team before July 22nd he still counted towards the comp pick calculations. Seems odd that the tender date would be almost a month before the cutoff date for Comp consideration. My guess is that it is much closer to the Tender cutoff date.

Cant seem to readily find definitive proof on an exact date though, and I dont care to spend the time/effort to figure it out at this exact moment.

Yeah, the staff Ballard and Irsay have put together is highly respected around the league

Isnt there a guy named Dobbs involved too?

Ed Dodds is the Co- Vice President of Player Personnel, along with Rex Hogan.

But I think he was just highlighting the guys that are specific to scouting the NFL level guys. Dodds/Hogan are big picture and dont focus on one area over another (as far as we know anyway).

  8. Just looking at a few teams that have under 5M in cap (and will have trouble paying draft picks/ UDFAs). These are all potential cuts based on IF they find suitable replacements in the draft (or have players waiting in the wings and can get replacements to back those guys up)

    Eagles:

-OLB Kendricks. has been reportedly on and off the trade block for awhile

    Steelers:

-OG Foster. He has a 3.5M cap hit and they might feel that Finney can replace him, as he looked decent filling in last year

    Cowboys:

-WR Terrance Williams. Could potentially be Dez Bryant as well, but chances are one of their WRs will be cut loose. They have Beasley and Switzer waiting in the wings and could also draft someone else.

    Falcons:

DE Brooks Reed. They could opt to go younger with Takk and Beasley heading the pass rushing group. Especially if they can land another pass rusher in the draft.

    Giants:

CB Eli Apple. Hes been a bit of a problem in their locker room. They could cut their losses and move on.

None of these guys are really "big ticket" acquisitions, but they are a couple guys who might be able to help us out. If I have a little bit of time tomorrow I will go through the teams with 5-10m or so in cap and see if they have a few potential targets.

  9. I expected an improvement from last year (hard not to) and he performed about as well as I expected. Hopefully he can improve even more next year. He will still probably end up being seen as being over drafted in the history books, but I think its possible he carves himself out a decent role for our team. Thats all that really matters at this point. No sense complaining about a past decision that cant be changed.

Or... maybe he is creating relationships and scouting bank with elite players in case they someday hit free agency and his team wants to get said player.

    This ^^^^^

Bill makes trades for former 1st/2nd round picks who dont pan out with their original teams all the time. Hes doing his due diligence now so that down the road he knows what he can get out of him should the opportunity present itself for him to get Chubb for pennies on the dollar.

Why this is even a debate is beyond me....

Per Spotrac, the Bears have about $40M in cap space, so they could definitely match if they wanted. With Meredith coming off the injury and a lot invested in Robinson, the Bears may not want to pay what we offer Meredith though.

They also have a lot invested in Taylor Gabriel (4yrs/ 26M) and TE Trey Burton (4yrs/ 32M). Not sure they want to tie up just under 40M in cap on 4 pass catchers for a prolonged period of time.

My one wish is for Luck to have a beast Oline ..... if he can get 3-5 seconds of Brady like protection could you imagine!?

To be fair, our OL DID give a lot of time to throw. They gave Brissett an average of 2.89 seconds (good for 5th in the league and 0.2 seconds longer than Brady got last yr). The problem has always been that our offense was based on long developing routes and little to no extra protection. It doesnt matter if you block for 3 seconds if the routes arent open for 4. I think the scheme change alone should do wonders for our OL (though I am not against adding more talent to increase our chances of success).

The safety has long been a position of great importance in the NFL. The two men are the final line of defense, and are often some of the better sideline-to-sideline athletes in football. But the two safety positions are very different, with the Strong Safety being the man to cover the TE on the strong side of the play while also being the main run-support guy. The Free Safety is usually dropped back deep, where he can use his instincts and ball skills to come up with clutch plays when a corner gets beat. These two positions have been this way for as long as football has been around, but what if the safety mold were to change?

Here's the theory: Instead of having a Strong Safety and a Free Safety, why doesn't a team with an uber-athletic cover linebacker just use two free safeties? If you have a linebacker that can go man-on-man with any tight end, the Strong Safeties role is shifted purely to run support and some dropping into zone coverage. Get two other high quality run-stuffers at LB, and all of the sudden all the SS has to do is drop into zone. But wait, isn't that what the free safety is best at doing?

In practice, two free safeties would split up the field of play in zone, with both being ball-hawking players with great instincts. When Malik Hooker was healthy this year, he dropped into single deep coverage often, and throws on the sideline deep made it difficult for him to cover. Splitting the field in half would allow for much more ground to be covered and, in theory, many more interceptions due to a lack of distance needing to be covered. No team would have faith in going deep on a team that consistently dropped two free safeties into deep coverage. Adding in some high quality short field corners and teams would be virtually unable to pass the ball for any kind of a big gain.

As I began to ask this question, I looked to the internet to find if anyone else had any reason for this, but there was nothing on this topic. I wonder why, and if any of you know the reason why a team doesn't use 2 FS, please chime in! Honestly, though, imagining a duo of Hooker and Minkah Fitzpatrick dominating the deep ball makes my mouth water at the prospect. Thoughts?

The whole cover 2 zone concept is typically based on 2 safeties dropping back into deep coverage. While teams do still use the designation of SS and FS, in these schemes they typically have 2 safeties who can cover in the back end. At that point it becomes semantics. One is listed as a SS but is asked to do the same thing as the FS (at least in these looks). With us going to a Tampa 2 based defense, this is kind of what we are looking at, at least in our base defense looks.

LOL. Yeah. I got tired of getting my hopes up and being let down. So kinda chilled out this year. Same expectations. Same letdown. Just didn't go nuts on the forum lmao.... But no. If we sign 2-3 good players I will be here acting like a 12 year old. LOL.

I will admit about a week ago I had to check and make sure you were still around. Didnt see any hyped FA threads from you and got a little worried. As much as we razzed you about it last yr, it is better than all the negativity we are seeing right now.

He could still honor his visit with the Colts and come here, despite any offers made, right?

It is not like a timeshare salesman saying "this is the best deal you are going to get but you have to take it now, cannot sit on it or think about it". Do teams do that? Do they say the offer becomes invalid once he leaves the facility or city without signing it? That is the part I am uncertain about.

Not in those exact words. There is often the feeling that if a player walks away from signing a deal then they move on to finding the next guy on the list. A free agent might feel pressure that another player will be signed while they are doing other visits.
