This makes me think they are trying to make him a center.

I would feel more confident about taking advantage of that if the offense had looked better last two weeks. I just don’t have faith in Minshew. Hopefully some things get fixed in the bye week.

I feel the same way, but Minshew is due to bounce back. He's not over the hill, and is still capable of putting up a good passing game. Hopefully the bye week gave Shane some time to figure out a decent game plan. The team is fairly healthy, and we are home. TB is just a mediocre team, so the situation is about as positive as we can really wish

I think the key to this game will be keeping baker in the pocket and not letting him roll out and getting pressure on him. Because they can score. Their defense might be beat up but they have a good offense.  If Colts defense doesn’t  play well we won’t win because I don’t think Minshew is good enough to get in a shootout.

Two TB games (out of the three) I watched the past few weeks, the Bucs secondary was absolutely atrocious. So that may.come into play as well?

With Bucs LB group injured I can see some outside runs being successful. I don’t think Steichen will be as stubborn as Reich and run up the gut when he knows that’s Tampa’s strength.

Remember the hatred towards Reich when we played Tampa in 21. 27 straight passes but it was successful. The bad thing Reich didn’t do when they got a big lead was then run to use clock after that big lead.

The only single TB player Steichen mentioned in his press conference was Vita Vea. He is certainly aware of his presence.

Not being able to run is the direct affect of Minshew nor throwing down field. Why should teams defend downfield when he only throws it on rare occasion. On the first drive against pats he threw a 30 yard pass to McKenzie then Taylor ran really well that first drive. Going to have to throw form field to open up the run game. I agree I am not liking shot gun it hurts the play action and the run game. Steichen is going to have to run away from Vea. More outside runs. The Tampa secondary is really bad but it kinds of plays into the hands of the colts since Minshew don’t throw down field. Pittman and downs should have big days if Minshew can throw the ball well.

I totally agree with you, that Minshews passing game is hurting the running game... But also, every time they try to run a handoff, when the QB is 6 yards deep, in the shotgun, doesn't help either.

If our QB is not a great threat at deep passing, and since we have the great o-line and backs... maybe then, they should try establishing the run?

And seriously, what great running team, Would only run plays out of the shotgun? After all, the shotgun is a passing formation, not a running formation.

Its obvious Ballard wants the Colts to have the "hard nosed" reputation...

Remember, a couple years back, when the team was marketing the slogan "Just Run the Damn Ball"

That idea seems foolish, if the offense operates nearly 100% of the time from shotgun

What doesn’t help is Minschew is not a strong armed quarterback who can throw deep.  So they can play the short passing game.  It has worked occasionally as the quick short passes to the outside with blockers in front have resulted in a number of big gains and touchdowns on occasion.  Our OL is a strength and can get downfield to block when called on.  The guards pull very well.  I’m expecting big things from JT the rest of the way.  He’s our big playmaker and is ready to breakout imo.  More roll outs for Minschew would be a good tactic as well imo with more motion from our WR’s thrown in as well.   I think we need to focus on our strengths which is our very good OL and JT along with Minchews mobility.  Just my 2 cents.

I really wish Taylor can become, once again, one of the top backs through the remainder of this season. But I have my doubts he will.

We got JT signed, along with Moss, and for once, our highly paid line is finally healthy (knock on wood). The pieces are in place for success on the ground.

My opinion, as to why we seem to have difficulty consistently establishing the running game, is because the team does not run enough plays from under center.

I'm watching San Francisco (Shanahan) now, and see how effective McCaffrey is when they run with the QB under center.

I believe JT's production would greatly benefit, if Steichen would just come out with Minshew, lined up under center, and run the ball.

But unfortunately, it seems SS has almost abandoned that formation, and is going to continue to run nearly every play from the shotgun formation.

Ballard invested heavily in Taylor, and seems to be committed in wanting to establish the Colts as a "hard nosed running team"...

yet I don't think that identity is really possible without, at least a decent percentage of the plays being run from under center.

...And some of the other benefits, in running from under center, is the play-action pass looks much more deceiving, to the eyes of the defenders.

and it's more successful than shotgun, for those short one yard (goal line) situations, we always struggle to convert.

Interesting to see Harrison being listed as a LB because he was drafted as a Safety.

I don’t really get the take from Hicks though because Leonard was still grading out as one of our best LBs and especially Olubi was grading terrible.

Too much is credit given to these internet grades. Just from watching, one could see, Leonard's play was no better than any of our LBs who have played this season.

My guess is Olubi will not be the replacement for Leonard, at least not right away,  he has been used as the backup to Franklin at MLB position.

Now that Leonard has been cut, we'll all find out soon enough, how he stacked up in comparison to our other players.

I was surprised they cut him, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the defense now performs without him.

All season I felt Leonard was not getting it done, and believed our other LBs, would never get a chance to show if they could do better, due to Shaq's reputation, contract and the Colts blind loyalty.

Bahaha, Olubi had more missed tackles than tackles (5 to 4) in the game he started instead of Franklin. Speed is a great run defender, but he's not good in coverage. Hope Harrison can be the answer there.

I still believe there will be no dropoff minus Leonard. And I expect at least a slight improvement in all areas, tackling, coverage, run support, sacks whatever. Perhaps I am wrong? But I think, at the end of the day, the defense will be better, regardless of who sees more time, be it Stuard, Olibi, Harrison, or someone else?

When I look up defensive and offensive stats I do not see what Bowen is talking about. Unless he is talking yards per rush.  Because Tampa is ahead of colts as far as rushing the football total yards.

When the nfl preview goes up tomorrow I will make a thread.

The Bucs have only 769 yards rushing on the year. Dead last.

That is probably what he was referring to.

The Colts have 1,180 yards rushing

Bucs are banged up too. The SF game wasn’t Kind. But they still have such good offensive weapons.

They have Mike Evans who some may regard as a top tier WR, and Mayfield, who up until this year, was considered perhaps, a bust? and one of the top LTs in the league with Wirfs. But outside of those three, their offense is not really that impressive.

I think if we hadn't just had our bye Tampa would haven won it. Now I hope we can pull off a win.

I watched TB the last two or three weeks. imo...Baker Mayfield has played some of his best football. Him and Evans will be a test for our defense. I was surprised at Keven Bowens comments that the Bucs have the worst rushing offense in the league, since I thought RB Rachaad White looked really good.

On the defensive side, their pass coverage has been truly horrendous. and they suffered even more injuries, coming out of the 49ers game (something to watch)... Vita Vea provides an immovable plug in the middle, so Steichen will need to have a plan for running Taylor and Moss.

Maybe Restinpeacesweetchloe can start a new thread for the Buccaneers game?

The offense put up 13 points... against the Panthers...

And before the bye it was 10 points against the Patriots.

It's been a downward spiral for some weeks now with Minshew at QB. I think, because the defense has injuries, they won't bad able to carry the team now when we kinda need them to.

Good point. I think, if the Colts are to go anywhere this season (which I have doubts)...

It will depend on Gardner Minshew improving his game. The way he has regressed, if he doesn't play better, we will probably finish below 500. Coming out, after this bye week, Minshew getting some of his old magic back, is the only way we can have a chance.

Depends. Outside of the health issues, we are clearly better on D when he’s in vs when he’s not.

the thing is, people think his role is to be like Miles Garrett, but he’s more of an edge setter that can get to the QB more often than most edge setters.

he needs to improve his game but he has a good pressure rate, just half a step away from QB sacks. I’d like to see him get off the ball faster cause I think he can and I think that would help his sack rate. Either way, I think he stays a colt for a long while.

So far, although the defense usually does play better with him, than without, imo, as the 21st player chosen, Kwitty has shown only, slightly little more than being "just a guy" (I think this is what Kevin Bowen and Eddie Garrison were alluding to in the podcast)

If the Colts do exercise the 5th year option... and Paye is to stay for a long while, he would then need to step up his game, since 2024 becomes his contract year, where he would have to show he deserves being extended going forward. Over this stretch, I hope the Colts may draft (or acquire) some another DEs to provide deeper competition at the position than we currently have.
