  1. Dude, why don't you get it? It was not the play calling. It was the play of the O-line. You would have to be blind not to see this.

I'm not sure what you don't get. If the O-line is bad as you say, in which we all know that, why are the same play calls being made which go right into the very weakness of that O-line(the middle). The majority of the Colts positive runs have come off tackle or to the outside, yet those are the plays that are called way less than the A-gap run plays (majority being negative) which keep getting called.

Again, I have no problem with the balance and running in general. Its the specific running plays that are called which are the ones that routinely get hit for negative yards. The middle isn't working. How many times does Bruce need to see this,

  2. The ran outside maybe 3 times all game. STOP running inside! The guards can't get any push and on top of that the Vikings were stacking the box repeatedly. It's hard enough to run with 8 guys in the box, even harder when the interior of the O-line can't hold up. Run some stretch plays or more plays off tackle. The Vikings didn't have to work hard at all today in terms of stopping our running game. Spread the LB's out and get them off the line of scrimmage if the Colts are wanting to run more up the middle.

Arians' play calling today was horrendous in the second half. Its the NFL, going conservative with a whole quarter left to play is a complete disaster especially when the run game had been as bad as the play calling itself. Had they lost the game today, Arians should have had quite a few fingers pointed his way.

All in all it was a win, and darn did the defense stand up. Outside of Justin King, there isn't much bad I can say about them. The team needed this win, if for anything a major confidence booster especially after their game against Chicago. They just need to stay in attack mode and not let teams back in the game.

  3. Haydens contract was rediculous.. Polian should have been shot after that deal. 40MIL for an average Cover 2 corner?!? Then the following year give Bethea, who has been a Pro Bowler and injury free, less than Hayden? I'm really surprised Bethea took that and didn't try the market. I think he could have been paid more than he got here.

  4. A stud running back is a LOW priority. Our line is pathetic. It's not bad, it's abysmal. With a good line, Brown would look like a Pro Bowl RB.

Look at what Rhodes and Addai did when James' line was intact. We ran the ball very effectively. When Polian figured OL was easily replaceable with low-end/UDFA guys, our running game faltered.

I would blame the 2008 PO loss to the Chargers on this. We had a chance to ice the game with one first down. We went with an empty backfield on 3rd down. An empty freakin' backfield!

Our RB gets blown up in the backfield these days. He doesn't fail to hit the hole, he doesn't even get to that part.

I would be livid if we draft a RB early in 2013!

Completely agree! And the same goes with WR. The guys we have now work fine and once Luck gets a little more time in the pocket they will shine. Build that stone wall of an O-line before anything THEN it will be much easier to see if RB/WR are needed. In which I still don't think it will be then.

  5. Does anybody hold any hope that Ijalana recovers and becomes part of the Colts' future?

I know his chances to still be with the Colts are slim but I personally root for him.

Besides, he is Anthony Constanzo's best buddy and I still believe they would make a good tandem.

I really liked Ijalana and thought he would be a lock for this offensive line for years. I'm hoping he can come back because in my opinion it would save the Colts a lot of money in not having to overpay for a FA nor have to burn a draft pick. He was a beast at LT in college and some said would actually end up better than AC. I remember hearing Gruden talk about him and compared him to Tarik Glenn.

I hope he recovers, but 2 acl tears on the same knee isn't good.

  6. I wont disagree that the offense has to do a better job of keeping drives alive but the defense has to do a better job of getting off the field as well. I know they were tired but they also dropped two or thee INTs and were having trouble getting the Bears off the field on third down. If they do those things like the Bears D was able to do to them it would help. All and all as a team we lost the battle on third down. Add to that we lost the battle up front and with turnovers and there is no way you are going to win.

The Colts limited the Bears to 4/12 on 3rd down. The Colts were even worse. This game was solely in the hands of the offense, and as I said the defense got hung out to dry from it.

  7. By no means can the defense be blamed. I'm sorry but when they keep getting hung out to dry by the offense because they couldn't stay on the darn field this is going to happen. They were on the field for 20 of the 30 minutes in the first half! The offense produced three 3 and outs and had an INT in their first 4 possessions which continually kept putting the defense back on the field. You could tell by the end of the half they were tired. However, they had a definite stop on Chicago's third possession in which they had Chicago at 3rd and 10 and Justin King had that rediculous PI call. I watched the game with friends, whom were Bear fans, and they were even like wow. After that, it all went down hill.

The offense has to sustain drives or it kills the aggressiveness of the defense, due to wearing the guys out quicker.

  8. I am going to be very sad the day we let Donald brown go and gets picked up by someone like Atlanta and he has a couple good years showing that it was the online after all.

He is not a bruising back he is a speed back with great balance, when you manage expectations reality can always surprise.

First off, and as I put on another post, I'm not much of a Brown supporter at all, but I'm starting to come around and I completely agree with what you said. However, I think he's a much better change of pace back, and NOT a 1st down back. That's what completely screwed Addai up, whom I WAS a major supporter of. When Dom was here Addai's first year they both worked so well together. Dom was the hard hitter that softened up the defense and Addai was the shifty guy who took advantage of what Dom did early on. Donald is a guy you want against a defense whose been beaten on for a little while because his speed is very deceptive. Early on I would use Ballard and Carter to beat on that defensive front and get them used to a slower more powerful back THEN bring in Donald and let him catch them off guard with his speed and use him later in games just like they did with Addai/Rhodes. Once Addai became the lead back he pretty much faded. He wasn't meant to be the "main" guy as he never was at LSU and I don't think Donald is that type of guy either although he did do it in college.

My other point was that I don't think you're (mystrymaster) going to have to worry about Donald going anywhere. He's not been that productive enough to really command any type of money so he will be relatively cheap for the Colts. On top of that I'm sure they see his potential as a threat when he's given holes to get through. I look for him, Carter, and Ballard to be here a while. Together, in my opinion, that is a dang good rotation and a cheap one at that.

To go a little further; To me its not about whose starting but about getting the right guys in there to help those around them succeed. If I were Donald I wouldn't be upset that Vick or Delone was starting. In no way is that saying they are better, but more-so helping Donald out and what he brings skill wise to the table. I'd be telling them to soften up that defense for me so I could go in and give the knockout punch. Like I mentioned about Addai, when he was in that change of pace role he still gained 1000 yards and was the RB ever to have done that and not started a game. Donald has that same ability in him.

  9. .... Got hurt celebrating after they sacked Cutler. Just wondering if anyone else noticed that, because I didn't the 1st time.... I swear, these guys are made of glass

I saw that and just shook my head. I was seriously wondering why they were celebrating a sack when they were STILL down 20.

  10. Oh, if you read my reply to the OL talent vs time thread going on right now (or read any of my threads from the last 24 months) you'd see that I have been advocating a real OL since Manning was taking snaps and Caldwell was calling plays.

If you look at our OL stats from 2010 you would think they were servicable but it was mannings 2.3-2.8 sec release that masked the ineptness.

There is no doubt we need an OL, but you can't drop back 45 times even with the best OLine and not get your ears pinned back.

Yes the texas 7v7 leagues are turning the NFL into a pass happy league, but you STILL need to run the ball and stop the run if you want to win.

The ability to run the ball isn't just on the O-line. I've seen some weakness in our backfield. If you haven't then you're not watching the same games I am.

The Colts allowed 114 net yards rushing with an avg of 3.5 yards. Forte's 32 yard run completely skewed the stats and made it better than it actually was. The Colts actually held up in run D. To further that, the Colts had 63 net yards rushing for an avg of 4.5 yards. Sure, Donald had 2 big runs, but the Colts only ran the ball half of what the Bears did. I would bet had the Colts ran 30 times they would have out produced the Bears. However, being put behind early caused the would be carries into passes instead. On top of that even with a worn out D they still did VERY WELL against a premier rushing team. I will take 114 yards and 3.5ypc from this team every week.

Again, NONE of those RB's would fair better on this team right NOW. I think our RBBC will be fine once they can get some consistency on the O-line.

  11. My thoughts:

I don't think Powers was as bad as everyone made him out to be. One time covering Marshall he fell on his butt, but got right back up and made the tackle. He nearly had an INT as well. Marshall would make any good CB look bad.

Our O-Line got crushed all day. If your front four doesn't belong to the Giants, then there's no way we should've gotten manhandled all day like that with just 4 defenders rushing. That was ridiculous.

Fleener looked good. I was really happy to see him catch a few finally. When he adjusts to the NFL he will be quite the weapon. That said, I thought we should've used Allen more. Even as a H-Back running to pick up some 3rd downs.

Donald Duck Brown. Can he be any more inconsistent?

That one play where Luck threw the INT, the Bears were waaaay off sides...no doubt about it.

Justin King has already been called for 2 pass interference calls in the first game. Hope this isn't a trend.

We need to use Moore and Ballard more.

I still can't believe Adam V missed that FG. Wow.

    And......Why does Arians hate screeens!??!

That first PI call on him was ridiculous. He played/fronted the WR very well and played the ball. The second one was pretty tacky as well.

AV misses one like that EVERY year.

  12. I thought building the monster would have meant being able to both run the ball and stop the run. Our two most glaring defects as a team aside from our secondary.

There is no Polian to blame now.

I would have loved to see any of these names on our roster right now:

    Trent Richardson

    Doug Martin

    David Wilson

    Luke Kuechly

    Zach Brown

    Courtney Upshaw

Any two of these guys would have gone a long way towards "building the monster". Looks like we'll have the #1 pick again next year and some cap space, so we should be phenominal by 2014.

Secondary? They are fine. It was not generating a pass rush in the middle to late part of the game that didn't help them. On top of that, sitting them in zone coverage didn't help them either. The defense did the best they could yesterday while being on the field for nearly 60% of the game because the offense couldn't sustain anything early on. The "glaring" defect yesterday was the O-line. Luck was pressured way too much.

NONE of those players would help this team right NOW. Running backs and Line Backers? Umm.. how about O-line? Honestly just a solid guard for the right side would do wonders right now. Justice wasn't even that bad yesterday, at least up until Linkenstink came in. It was the absence of Reitz that hurt the left side and McGoober on the right side that killed the line.

Just out of curiosity, did you even watch the game?

  13. we had pass rush after Freeney went down, as a matter of fact we got a sack by Mathis and some pressures by Redding and up the middle

That didn't happen until later in the 4th once the game was out of reach.

  14. The 2 minute drill right before the half was impressive by Luck and the offense. Too bad Adam missed the easy kick.

I agree and they did well with only being given :44 seconds. I had a bad feeling when AV lined up for that kick, but he ALWAYS seems to miss one like that every year. It happens to the best of them, but when the game is on the line give me AV over EVERYBODY.

  15. Ok. So I spent the $35 for NFL Rewind and let me tell you it's NICE! You can watch the entire game in HD. There is both a broadcast version and a condensed version. There is even coach's film and extra perks you can't get on a regular broadcast.

Like everyone else, I was really excited for the season to start so I could see how the new Colts would do. Blah! It's gonna be a long season me thinks. We're better than we were last year just by having Andrew Luck replace Dan Curtis Painter-Orlovsky. But it still might only translate to 3 or 4 wins. And if that's all we're gonna get, I say go all out and "FALL FLAT FOR MATT (Barkley that is)." If he keeps throwing for 5 or 6 TDs per week, he'll EASILY command twice the trade value that RGIII brought last year to the number 2 overall pick. Anyways, just some thoughts:

    1. O-line. This O-line is not good enough. Most of these guys are second or third stringers at best on other teams and yesterday it showed. heck, Reitz and Link are barely practice squad guys I swear. Over and over again, Luck was taking shots because the O-line lost their individual match-ups. Remember, the Bears play Tampa 2 so they never even blitzed! It won't be pretty when we face exotic blitzing teams. Just keep Luck healthy for the season is all I'm hoping for.

    2. Donald Brown. Donald Brown is not good enough. No one could run behind our O-line. But the Donald has to make simple catches out of the backfield or he won't last. In '98, Faulk helped Manning immensely because he caught like 80 or 90 dump passes from Manning.

    3. Live and Die with Freeney. The defense is new. But it sure felt old to me. The defense relied way too much on Dwight. It has since he's been here. Yesterday it was the same. When Dwight was in the game he was double teamed every time. Cutler was clearly rattled. As soon as Dwight left, Forte runs to his side for a huge gain. Nice job Jerry Hughes. Then the Bears just ignored the Colts pass rush the rest of the day. Mathis is great, but he's not Dwight. I really hope the Colts re-sign him at the end of the year.

    4. Receivers. Reggie was Reggie. I hope Reggie does well these next three years. I'll be rooting for him. If he does, he'll have a solid case for the Hall. Fleener was really good. If the O-line can get figured out and give Luck some time, Fleener's going to be a monster to cover.

    5. Corner Backs. I'm gonna give Davis and Powers a pass. Neither guy played well. But the pass rush was non-existent after Freeney left. Plus Davis just got here. The last Bears TD to Alshov Jeffrey was just like an alley-oop at the end of a blow-out. It looks bad on the defender (Davis) but who cares by that point.

    1. Reitz, IMO, is highly underrated. He didn't even play yesterday, so I'm not sure where your evaluation came from. The left side of the line is pretty solid when he's in there. Olsen and McGlynn yesterday weren't giving Luck much room yesterday to step up in the pocket, especially not in the second half.

    2. Eh.. I think had the game been a little closer earlier on I think the run game would have gotten better, but once they were down by 13+ they panicked, The backs just need to play the game like Edgerrin did. If ANYTHING get back to the line of scrimmage. He rarely had negative plays and at all costs they need to have that same mentality. However, I have to say Brown did well with the few carries he had and I'm not a Brown supporter at all. A shame they couldn't have kept that up, but he can't have mental lapses and drop the ball like he did. His first drop he had could have been for HUGE yards. It happens, we just need to hope that was the end of it.

    3. Defensively I thought they did fine, especially after being on the field for the 2/3 of the first half. They got worn down quickly when the offense couldn't sustain anything. That's going to happen if that offense can't keep them off the field. If the offense can keep them somewhat fresh, what we saw in the first few possessions we will see deeper into the game, but if not they will be forced to rush 4-5 and sit in zone all day. Once that happened Cutler picked them apart. The run defense was pretty solid with the exception of the 32 yard run. 27 carries and 92 yards. I think we will take that EVERY week. Granted we can't take away that run, but I'm just saying the defense played better than the stats show. As I stated in another post, the offense hung them out to dry with the quick possessions.

    4. Agree

    5. See 3; Their tackling was good, but once they were put into zone coverage and had no help from the pass rush they were on their own. They did well, I thought, for not having much help later in the game.

The more and more I look back at the game. It really wasn't that bad, but I'm more optimistic than some. They left at least 6 points on the field (missed FG, endzone INT) and had too many mental mistakes (Browns first drop, Brazill's fumble) that only helped benefit the Bears. Just a few bounces our way instead of to the Bears and its a COMPLETELY different ball game.
