  1. Yes hope for the best. For me this is deffinately a downgrade at GM. But, Polian has not been at his best recently, Chris Polian was not the GM of the future. I'm glad Irsay has made a decision to bring in a pro (as opposed to managing the team himself like he used to).

    How is it a downgrade?

    YOU JUST GOT HIRED!

    r-grigson1.jpeg?w=150

  2. Is he one of the youngest GMs in the NFL or what? Not even 40 and heading up an NFL team. The guy really doesnt have much of a track record - I wonder if Irsay is wanting to start calling more of the shots like Davis in Oakland did or JJ in Dallas does.

I sure hope he is not looking for a Vick like player!

Much of a track record? The guy has earned his stripes and has actually worked his way up the ladder unlike Chris Polian. He won't be looking at a Vick type player. From what I see, Vick was more of a Owner choice because of how huge it was. I doubt Grigson was the sole reason Vick ended up there.

OT- I like the hire. Now the first big descision is gonna be on Caldwell. We'll find out at 4!

  3. Andrew, look I know you want to play right away. But just a few things for you to think about:

    1) We have had a very long tradition of winning football games here and we are committed to doing that. Sure, this year was bad, but it was a speed bump. So in coming here you know we are committed to winning.

    2) We also are a passing team. We have a tradition of bringing in play makers and that will continue. So you will definitely get to throw the ball quite a bit to quality receivers. We will have more balance with running, but we are a pass first team.

    3) We drafted two tackles last year, and we are committed to building a good run and pass blocking offensive line.

    4) If you sit here for 2-3, you will get a chance to learn from the greatest QB of all time on how to prepare. You won't have to go through the rookie year of being pounded. Look at Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay versus David Carr coming into the Texans. Since you are a junior, at least you gain a year in that area.

    5) If we don't take you or we trade you to a team like the Browns or Redskins, you see the disfunction that has gone on there. Head coaches changing every few years, owner getting involved, not a lot of talent. Do you really want to put yourself through that? Here, we have a solid owner, a solid structure, and a proven track record.

    Perfect answer!

  4. In the Bowl game against Oklahoma State, Luck made all of the types of throws that you would look for in a highly skilled QB. You cannot deny that he threw the ball deep, mid range and short range, all with accuracy. You also cannot deny that he made a lot of calls at the line to set up the best possible run against the defense that he saw. If you argue that Stanford has a great running game, you're also making a point that Luck can call a heck of a game at the line.

Luck does not have the "wow" factor that RGIII has because he's mostly a pocket passer. He's very accurate and gets rid of the ball fast. There's nothing flashy about that. The thing with Luck is that there isn't anything that he doesn't do well. We saw him change plays at the line of scrimmage, look off safeties to make passes in tight windows down the sideline, let the defensive pressure come within a few feet of him before throwing the ball to free up and set-up the screen play, and scramble to gain first downs when necessary. He has great fundamentals and a solid throwing motion. His arm is not weak and is actually above average. This will be proven at the combine, if he participates.

I've made this comparison before, but Andrew Luck reminds me of the football version of Tim Duncan, AKA "The Big Fundamental." He's not flashy but does everything extremely well.

Now, I'm not saying that we have to draft Luck, but if we do, I can definitely see why.

Fundamentals are often what seperate good players from great players in their ablity to implement and use them consistently. Luck is fundamental.

  5. Its funny that you would suggest a bet.I recently made a bet that we(colts)take cousins over luck(top of R3).I'm equally confident with this.

Ill take you up on that bet if you'd like. I have my paypal account in hand if your ready :)

OT- The reason why talking about Peyton's replacement is because people are blind and don't understand football. Peyton has 2-3 years left. If you can get a franchise QB now and prepare him for the innevitable, you have to do it. Look at the Dolphins

  6. You know, I was probably one of the biggest supporters of getting rid of Caldwell this year but after this whole Polian debacle, I think I'd give him one year. IF and i mean thats only IF we can't get Fisher. If we can't get fisher then keep Caldwell one more year and see what he does when he actually gets some talent.

  7. Short and sweet......give Peyton what he's needed for years....a complete team of talented offensive and defensive players through the draft and trades.

You say that like its so simple. We can use the picks we have in 2-6 to get plenty of talent with the RIGHT talent evaluators not named Polian.

Trade the #1 pick to set us up for the next two drafts. Select a promising QB (2nd-3rd round) for a fraction of the price of Luck and ween him into the pro game.

And end up with what? Another Orlovosky or Painter because we "got him for a bargain"? You don't seem to understand that the QB position is the toughest position to have over-the-top talent in. Look at the Jets and Ravens. They both got their starting QB's in the first round and both are mediocre at best right now. To me, you can't pass up on a talent like Luck when the NFL is progressing even more towards a QB-drivenleague.

All this is predicated upon Manning being unquestioned in his full recovery. If there is any question to his health....scratch all of the above, draft Luck and hope for the best.

Agree but if Manning is healthy, you still take Luck.

PS: You really should follow my posts closely. I was voted coolest guy on the internet 3 years in a row..

    PSS: I can tell LOL

  8. I disagree with that one, all signs show it was BP who was in love with Luck... i cant wait to see the senior bowl and up coming combine and pro days... i personally believe RGIII will be drafted by the colts for the simple fact that he has waaay more upside and brings value with him if the colts trade down.

How does RG3 have more upside? Scrambling QB's don't last in this league.

Also I don't know if you caught that Irsay said Tom Telsco, who is acting GM right now i'd assume, was in Arizona to watch the Stanford-OKS game. If we all of a sudden lost interest in Luck because Polian was gone, why would he be at that game to scount Luck, who played very well I might add.

What you don't understand is that teams over the course of history build the same way. In history, the Colts have built their teams around the QB position (Unitas, Harbaugh, Manning) and soon Luck. Manning emulated Unitas and Luck emulates Manning. They'll take him.

  9. Let me summarize this for you all-- "I'm a better fan", "Manning and Luck CANNOT co-exist because they just..uh... they just can't" and "pretty much it is guaranteed that Manning will be released". I am SO sick of these threads. It's gonna be a LOOOOONG offseason of this garbage.

Completely agree Bro. Its sad that the media has over-hyped a good player in Luck and as someone stated in another thread, the media perception has become so large in the idea that Peyton will be released or traded that they have forgotten what the guy WHO OWNS THE TEAM AND HAS THE ULTIMATE say has said:

-Irsay will keep Peyton and pay him if he's healthy.

-Irsay will draft a good, young QB (Luck)

-Irsay will keep both on the roster and try and transition from Manning to Luck

  10. I honestly cannot believe people think we would not draft Luck. Yes, trading the pick would be a STELLAR idea if the best available athlete was Terrelle Pryor or somebody (which was a strong possibility before Pryor entered the Supplemental Draft). However, you simply do NOT pass up on a guy of Luck's caliber. Yes, I know, all prospects are unproven in the NFL, he could be a bust, etc. But the world is supposed to end this year too, right?

What I mean is, say what you will and speculate on what we do with that pick all you want, but Indy will NOT trade that pick away. As for Peyton, He restructured his contract before, as Irsay wanted to make him the highest paid player in the NFL over Brady. However, Peyton took less money so we could resign some veterans. Also, PEYTON was the one who structured the deal where Indy could opt out on the contract this March if his neck was not fully healed.

Jump to the TNF game vs. the Texans. We got our first win of the year that night, but before the game, Irsay sat with Eisen and the gang. He talked about Peyton's future a bit, and said that "if he's healthy, he will be in Indy next year". Personally, I don't believe that Irsay thinks money is an issue. The people who bring up Elway walking out on us need to remember something; Bob Irsay was a LOT more stingy with his money toward this franchise than Jim is. I have faith that Irsay will do everything in his power to keep Peyton AND Luck on this roster.

As for "sitting for 4 years", I do not see Peyton Manning playing FOOTBALL for another 4 years. The rehabilitation and healing process has been much slower than prevuiously anticipated (6-8 weeks). Also, Peyton, who will be 36 this Spring, has 2 kids now. I think that if he is healthy to play, he restructures his contract once more for 2 more seasons. If he is not 100% heathy, he retires from the game. He is the kind of guy who wants to devote 100% of his attention toward something; remember last season he delayed contract negotiations because he wanted to focus on the season. He would want to do the same for his young family in my opinion, especially after 3 neck surgeries.

After watching the Fiesta Bowl last night, it was SO obvious what sort of talent this kid Luck has. It would be a darnED shame to watch this kid in a Cleveland Browns uniform for the next 17 years. And I am SURE that a lot of the pundits on these forums who swear adamantly that we should trade the pick would be the same people complaining about what was lost, what we COULD have had.

Sorry for such a long post; hopefully you bore with me and agree with some of my points.

Thank God someone with a brain decided to post these points. Couldn't agree more!

  11. Bingo! If they use the pick on a backup quarterback then this will be the least productive draft of the Manning era in preparing for a championship in the short term. They will basically have the 33rd pick of the first 6 rounds looking for players to put on the field this year.

Lol this is completely wrong. Yes our first pick after Luck will be #33 but that also means you have FIRST choice in taking all of the 2nd round talent as well as the 3rd and 4th and so forth. Why do people get it so confused?

  12. The man has had 3 losing seasons in 24 years, two of which came in his first 3 years at Youngstown State.

That's what people fail to realize with Tressel. HE WAS A GOOD COACH. and as far as him cheating, let me breakdown like this:

Let's say you and your son are out at Mcdonalds one night after his football practice. The manager of the Mcdonalds says "O HEY YOUR THAT GUY ON OHIO STATE THAT PLAYS FOOTBALL, MEALS ON ME TONIGHT GUYS!". You both get extremely excited and proceed to smash 6 big macs. BEEP BEEP you just broke the NCAA rules. Welcome to the Jim Tressel story.

  13. I can read I disagree with your point which is what I keep trying to say. So you jumped all over me for assuming that you were saying the Colts should trade the pick if Manning is Healthy yet you just showed me a quote where you just said that...I am missing how I assumed wrong. Like I've said now for a third time I never assumed you didn't want Luck if Manning wasn't healthy just because I don't think anyone is thinking that. Everyone seems to be onboard with take Luck if Manning isn't healthy.

I think you take Luck even with a healthy Peyton Manning, it sets you up for the next 15 years and I don't think we are going to be in poistion to get another QB of Luck's talent in the Manning era. So rather than having to trade the future to get another QB down the road I say we do it now while we have the pick to do it. It doesn't hurt either that the QB there is supposed to be the next great thing and I am sorry I don't see "he could be a bust" as a good arguement for not taking him because you can say that about any draft pick. I also don't think it's a good argument to say we can Trade Luck and then trade the picks we got for that to get a QB next year who isn't supposed to be as good as the QB on the board this year. Beyond that there are several flaws with that plan what if Luck gets hurt or has a bad senior year? Add that to everything else I made about that case before.

Is their value to trading the pick? Sure there is but like I said with Peyton Manning before hand just because you get more picks doesn't mean those picks are going to equal the value of the player you traded away to get them. If Luck is as good as advertised we are going to kick ourselves for his whole career for not taking him. Like someone else said when they say the guy is suppsoed to be as good as Manning that's not someone you pass on. This dude has been the hands down first pick for two years now and has been fine combed to death and experts aren't even questioning that he's going to be the top pick. Very rarely are guys that the media is THAT sure of busts. Again is there a chance he could be a bust? yes but it's seems to be less of a chance than any other player in the draft based on what the people who eat, breath, live this stuff are saying.

Add to that what our owner has been saying and our GM has been saying I think the handwritting is on the wall. Manning sound liked he wouldn't be thrilled with the pick today in his interview but he would do what the team wants to do and pointed out himself he's under contract to the Colts and it's not his call. Luck said in an interview earlier this year he could learn from a Vet QB. Putting all the peaces together it sounds like the Colts are going to take Luck regardless of Manning's health.

You pretty much nailed all the nails into the coffin with that one. Good post!
