Re-watched the Force Awakens twice yesterday....The more I go back to this film, the less I am impressed with it. Each scene is very nostalgia heavy, and the film does a terrific job paying tribute to what Star Wars is about all in image. One could write a book demonstrating it scene by scene what the film is calling back to in the classic movies.
However, as beautiful as a film is, it don't make up for lack of storytelling. Essentially it's a New Hope 2.0 in it's framework and Abrams and company played this VERY safe. Why does the Empire still exist 40 years ago blowing up the death star and killing Vader and the Emperor? Why do the rebels still act (and look) like a rag tag team of partisans opposing the bigger established system? If anything, the rebels should be the ones in power now and whatever is left of the Empire should be scattered and weak.
After further thought on this, I wish they would have went with more original EU material to make up a story. Timothy Zahn's book and the character of Thrawn alone, could have inspired a much better film.

The 1 thing I like about JJ Abrams as a director is that he understands the importance of character development. By that, I mean central characters & machines we root for to make it without bombarding the audience with an onslaught of trivial overload stuff that fails to push the storyline forward. He doesn't let special effects get in the way of the story's climax & conclusion.
True, he also knows the importance of keeping a movie true to it's old roots. In the case of Star Wars, this is clearly presented with how almost every single scene to The Force Awakens has a call back nostalgia reference to the older film. Even though the film is weak, this did a good job to root in the old fans, and probably is going to have a huge effect on newer fans.
I like Star Trek but sadly, I am not as familiar with the Star Trek universe or fandom to really comment on the films he's done for it. I watched RLM's Plinkett review of the first Star Trek film, and despite the critical analysis of it, those guys kept it true that they enjoyed the film and seemed to feel bad that they were ripping on it. I believe in the end RLM did say that it was a good film for outsiders who had a limited experience with Star Trek in general.

Oh it's called BB-8?
I want a movie just centered around BB-8 and his family and friends.
Jules, you could get your wish....
Disney has turned Star Wars into a massive cash cow for the big screen. It could happen.
Shame on them for closing Lucas Arts for games. The new Battlefront game was such an epic disaster....Fans have been feeling the blues for a couple years now for many, many reasons. There was so many cancelled games, some that were in deep development and already had test demos out. For gamers of the 90's, I believe that Lucas Arts filled many of our precious memories going back to the old days. Star Wars games were the best licensed material games on the market.

I have been able to handle Star Wars but I totally have never been able to follow Star Trek. I seen it on as a kid and I have NO IDEA what is going on and they all look ridiculous. I am literally lost as hell over Star Trek since I was a kid. And it's not sense in explaining it to me, since I just think it looks weird.
