I get the joke & while I do appreciate the attempt, the punchline didn't really work. You get a B+ for creativity though TG.
Mostly because I cringe everytime Luck throws a pick & tackles the guy with the ball anyway. It makes me incredibly nervous actually.
But you wouldn't feel as bad about it if he were actually a safety, right?

Andrew Luck and interceptions go together like trailer parks and tornados. You don't want them, but you have to learn to live with them.
-
Lol I mean would you (no you) be complaining if he went like 5 picks later in technically the 6th round?
Ha! If there's a player you want, I say go and get him. If a player is graded for around the sixth round, I have no problem taking him in the late fifth.
-
What is the difference between a pick at the bottom of the 5th and a 6th?
The difference between Jonathan Newsome and Andrew Jackson...
(Also Montori Hughes versus John Boyett)...
(Also Vick Ballard versus Justin Anderson)...

Pasat no thanks, I like Davis strong againest the run. Pasat is more of a 4/3 guy!
True enough. Trinca-Pasat is about ten-to-fifteen pounds lighter than we look for in a DT (and he wouldn't come close to being big enough to be our nose), but he already excels at occupying blockers and pulling stunts. I think we could get him later in the draft, add some weight to him, teach him some pass rush moves, and plug him at DT (or even DE) in a year or so.
If I had my choice of Davis or Trinca-Pasat, I would choose Davis everytime. My point was that I think Trinca-Pasat (being around a fourth round pick) is a better value than Carl Davis (who won't make it to our second).

Couple of thoughts.... I think a #2 and two #4's is way too much to move up 14 picks. I haven't done the math yet, but I'm confident we've paid way too high a price.
Also... I think this is the 3rd mock you've had with Perry from Stanford. Hey, I'd love it to happen, but I don't think he's a fit with us. He's just under 310 and that's after putting on nearly 10 pounds since the end of the season. He's pretty much maxed out. I don't see the Colts using a 310 pound NT. We like them much, much bigger.
I think he'll go roughly where you project, but to another team....
The math is close enough (two points different). The thing with these trades is that I'm not absolutey sure we wouldn't be better served just taking Jordan Phillips in the first, letting a CB like Quentin Rollins fall to us in the second, and keeping our fourth round pick. The trades seem to be Dustin's way of getting the most value out of picking up Carl Davis (who seems to be his favorite player). Overall, though, it's not a bad haul. My only complaints are out of preference for certain players.

If your sixth round happened, I would vomit from excitement. They are my absolute two favorite mid-round prospects. Unfortunately, I don't see either of them lasting until the sixth.
-
I think there will be a better lineman at 29 than Carl Davis (I'm not as high on him as you and Dustin apparently are). I would prefer to get his teammate Louis Trinca-Pasat in the fourth over Carl Davis in the first.
I agree with RealityIsLuck that Dawson more than likely won't slip to pick 112. It technically COULD happen, but it's such a remote posibility that I would never plan for it in my mocks.
I also think you picked Jamil Douglas a few rounds early (just my opinion).
I love the Rollins and Geathers picks. Both are players I hope we're targeting. Swap Eddie Goldman into Carl Davis' spot, Rob Havenstein into Jamil Douglas' spot, and Hayes Pullard into Paul Dawson's spot and I would be ecstatic.

This looks like a very plausible draft (most people are WAY too optimistic in their picks), and that makes it look mediocre compared to other drafts. I agree that our defensive backfield is now our primary concern, but I think the D-line is missing one key player. If we could get a playmaker at D-line, I wouldn't worry about our backfield as much.
Kevin Johnson could be a good pickup, but I think we could get a better player at our spot. He's not in my top 32 players, so something better (in my eyes) will be available.
I like Donovan Smith... as a guard. I don't see him being the best available RT at our pick in the second round. Once again, I think we could do better.
Derron Smith's strength seems to be coverage which is great! Unfortunately, he excels at covering slot recievers and not TEs. We already have a good slot corner, so I don't think this is going to be what we're looking for in a safety. All that being said, I think he would be a great value in the third.
Mike Hull is exactly the right position for the right pick. I would love for us to get an ILB in the fourth. I would only want us to get Mike Hull if Hayes Pullard or Ben Heeney are not available. I am probably higher on Pullard than most people, but I think he could be an absolute beast in our scheme.
I don't know why, but too many websites are saying that Tyeler Davison would be an absolute waste in a three man front (NFL.com in particular). Does anyone know why? I'm afraid this might turn into a wasted pick.
After that, you seems to have picked too many offensive players for my taste. I like Crockett but could do without Halliday and White.
Thanks for taking the time to be thourough with your mock!

He's the kinda guy New England could do wonders with, but he's not a good fit in our scheme (ANYWHERE in our scheme).

This is more a list of my hopes:
Round One:
Eddie Goldman, NT Florida State
Arik Armstead, DE Oregon
Jordan Phillips, NT Oklahoma
Round Two:
Jay Ajayi, RB Boise State
Quentin Rollins, CB Miami
Round Three:
Hau'Oli Kikaha, OLB Washington
Hayes Pullard, ILB USC
Round Four:
Clayton Geathers, FS Central Florida
Rob Havenstein, RT Wisconsin
Round Five:
Corey Robinson, RT South Carolina
Matt Jones, RB Florida
Round Six:
Louis Trinca-Pasat, DT Iowa
Terry Williams, NT East Carolina
Justin Coleman, CB Tennessee
John Timu, ILB Washington
Round Seven:
Corey Cooper, SS Nebraska
Tevin McDonald, FS Eastern Washington
Chris Hackett, FS TCU
Sam Carter, SS TCU
If I had to add one more, it would Lorenzo Mauldin, OLB Louisville as a two or three.
-
You seem to be way higher on Carl Davis than most analysts and sportswriters (although that may be a good thing). I enjoyed your breakdown, but I'm still not convinced he'll go any earlier than the middle of the second round (and certainly not before Jordan Phillips).
-
Pick up Tim Tebow and switch Luck to safety...
-
If he's there when we pick round 1, Grigson better take him!
There will be someone better available. He's not a top 30 prospect in this draft.
-
and the pro-bowl doesn't mean anything.
That's harsh. The pro-bowl means every bit as much as Madden ratings!
-
He's just outside my top 30; so, even if he does fall to us, I expect something better to be available as well.
-
I figured I'd give this another shot:

I'll admit that I'm targeting Geathers and Pullard.

LaRon Landry version 2.0...

Good deal. I can see Sheard really breaking out up there. But here's what's up. New England's secondary is in trouble. They need at least 1 shut down CB (trade up for Marcus Peters?). Then they need a DT to replace Wilfork, and a RB. They just signed another mediocre Wide Receiver in Gibson (I don't get that, but whatever). They should sign Dwayne Bowe. He could be a pro bowler with Brady IMO. I don't get their fascination with mediocre wide outs. They should give Brady that Moss type to pair with Edelman and LaFell.
I think Bilichek has proven that money spent on WRs is wasted in his system. They don't need stars at that position with the scheme they run. Spend the money elsewhere, and they will see greater returns. This is a truly great signing for them.
-
As it stands now, I think it's:
1. TY
2. AJ
3. Moncrief
4. Carter
5. Cribbs
(#5 could use some improvement)
-
If we show more 4-3 fronts, he would best suited as a 4-3 DE. Until then, count on him staying as a 3-4 OLB.
-
If this is true, it sounds like Grigson is just going out to buy weapons and letting Pagano figure out what to do with them.
-
Gore fits our offense better, and I'm still not sure Murray wasn't a product of that O-Line. If we signed Murray, he would break in the first game.
Mock draft (with and without a trade)
in NFL Draft, Scouting, and Free Agent Talk
Posted
First up is my draft without a trade:
29: Eddie Goldman (NT/DT FSU)
61: Jay Ajayi (RB Boise State)
93: Hayes Pullard (ILB USC)
128: Rob Havenstein (RT Wisconsin)
165: Clayton Geathers (FS Central Florida)
205: Louis Trinca-Pasat (DT/DE Iowa)
207: Justin Coleman (CB Tennessee)
245: Tevin McDonald (S Eastern Washington)
256: John Timu (ILB Washington)
We pick up two day-one starters in Goldman and Geathers who would improve our defense dramatically. We get five role players who have the ability to become excellent starters in Ajayi, Pullard, Havenstein, Trinca-Pasat and Coleman. We also get two players who could excel on special teams with a chance to prove something more in training camp in McDonald and Timu. The names for picks 93, 128, and 165 are all interchangeable depending on how the draft is folding out. If there is a run on safeties, Geathers might need to go earlier dropping one of the others down.
My second potential draft invloves a trade. Minnesota trades picks 45 and 76 (660 value) for our picks 29, 205, and 207 (658 value) in order to pick up TJ Clemmings.
45: Carl Davis (NT/DT Iowa)
61: Jay Ajayi (RB Boise State)
76: Quentin Rollins (CB Miami)
93: Hayes Pullard (ILB USC)
128: Rob Havenstein (RT Wisconsin)
165: Clayton Geathers (FS Central Florida)
245: Ray Drew (DE Georgia)
256: Dallas Llewallen (C/G Wisconsin)
We pick up two day-one starters in Davis and Geathers. We get four role players who could become excellent starters in Ajayi, Rollins, Pullard and Havenstein. We also get two candidates for depth who fit our scheme fairly well. This trade is more geared towards the growing party of Carl Davis fans on these boards.
