You have to evaluate the player based on what he can do on the field, not where he was drafted. If you drafted a guy thinking he'd be a star contributor, but he winds up being a role player, you don't have to hang his draft slot over his head for the rest of his career. It does no good. If Dorsett winds up being a quality #3 receiver, that's not what you hoped for when you drafted him, but you don't cut him just because he didn't live up to his draft slot.

At a certain point, you have to move on from the past and evaluate honestly.

Edit: This is why Alex Smith is a long time starter and makes $17m/year, even though he didn't live up to his draft slot and has been far surpassed by Aaron Rodgers.

So true, especially that last part. Smith hasn't been Peyton #1 pick good, but he became a solid starting nfl qb regardless of where he was drafted.

Same as folks complaining about Kelly's value as a C in the first round. Who cares, at least the pick is producing SOMETHING. The league is littered with first rd busts.

  2. It's a job hazard unfortunately. You could be screwed up for life. Sadly, I equate it to something like heavy industry type jobs. You know something bad can happen during or after you stop working.

I do feel for these guys because you can adapt to having a bum knee or back as you get older, must be so tough to not be able to 'function' properly in life so to say.

  3. They hate because...

Luck has been beat up since he's been in the league (injury wise). Taken big hits/missed some games in his young career.

Regardless of if you blame him for holding it to long to extend plays or blame the OL.

He has small flaws. BUT, when he's on he's fire.

I feel given a slightly better oline he will be even better. I remember an interview where Peyton said Luck has a better IQ then he had.

They hate Luck (sometimes) because they see Luck absolutely can be a different version QB that provides Peyton like results. Media is pushing, just like they did to Peyton himself. Luck will be the Brady/Manning of this generation.

Peyton wasn't Peyton in year 5.

Apologies for tldr, I'm just amped football is back.

  4. 5'11" and 215, he's definitely got nice size as opposed to those mosquito type backs. I'm hoping some nfl coaching and training can get us a featured RB.

I can have hope. It's July.

  5. 3 Crappiest for me.

Foxboro-Went to both afccg losses. (All class:().

    Baltimore.

And I was shocked Buffalo of all places had some real aggressive fans I remember. They were worse then any jet/Giants vs Colts game I've ever been to.

  6. Without reading the article, my backfield poo pooing  is this, we have no homerun or quick hitting back (Edge days) who can get you the occasional HR, but also get you 4 to 6/7 yards ANY down.

You know most runs for us are going to be less then 5 regardless of who's running it.

Luck needs a legit young back who can take some heat off him. I hope that's what they see in Mack.

I remember thinking TY was going to be a total bubble screen/quick slant type WR who wouldn't ever be a #1. Glad I was wrong, but my hope is they see something more then a complementary player in Mack.

    Sorry for going sorta OT.

  7. I think HFA is more of an advantage if you're a cold weather team, especially in January. If the second/third best teams are warm weather or dome teams, you have actual HFA. Even if it's a 1% difference, I think traveling teams have trouble in cold weather.

Ne has had many sloppy games over the years. Imagine if Buffalo got its act together what an advantage it would be? Just like they had in the 90's.

Long answer made longer..I don't think LOS is much of an advantage for us like RCA was. Not many teams really have an advantage at home anymore except for weather.

Places where I think HFO is actually a bit more of an advantage then just crowd noise...NE,BUFFALO/BALT/PITT/KC/NY/CLE. Probably missing a few other cold weather teams.

Wasn't taking into account the teams actually have to be good, but I hope my point is in there somewhere.

    Hopefully not tldr, my apologies.

Nothing better than the feeling when you realise the offseason is finally almost over.

So true. The other sports, for me personally, don't do much.

Here's to hopefully having #12 healthy and feeling good this season.

    Cool...........what does it mean?

    Lol..exactly what I said

    WOW...wait what??

Here's a quick sample of it I found..

This will undoubtedly get fans to lose there minds on a play where we get robbed, you'll get to see the robbery from every angle :D

  10. Agreed on Peyton doing more with less then any other GOAT candidate.

Without repeating everything OP wrote, Brady literally had the stars line up for his greatness. Kind of reminds me of Jeter in baseball. Undoubtedly they're both great players, but I'd love to see history if Brady goes to the Bucs or Jets and Jeter goes to the Astros or Totals. I'd bet good money they aren't the guys we praise today. Peyton I think would have been great anywhere. He did come to the worst team (us) and made us a legit nfl team after just being a run of the mill team for years.

I really hate the argument about SB wins or appearances being a stat that people use to argue QB greatness. Unless a QB literally carries his team through the playoffs and SB, then I really don't want to hear it.

Wilson had arguably one of the best defenses in the league when he won his SB, and a top defense when he lost the other.

Luck has had arguably one of the worst supporting cast than any QB in the league and still made it to the AFCCG.

If you want to compare QBs, then compare stats. Making it to, and winning the SB, isn't a stat. It's the point of the entire league.

So true..I'd double like this if I could..

Sadly, it's our favorite team up in NE that has caused this to happen and reporters and critics have now made it the norm. Tommy could end with 9 rings and would probably still be thought of as better QB then a guy who wins 5,6 or 7 rings and went undefeated in each SB season.

    You'd still hear...yeah but Tommy had 9..

I am not panicking yet. If we keep staying around 8-8 and cant compete with the big boys by Andrew's 8th season then I will start to panic. Peyton didn't go to or win 1 until year 9. So I am still not panicking.

That's my logic as well. Teams can also go from garbage to competitive pretty quickly so even if a move or two don't workout you can still recover. And at worst, Irsay can try to buy a team for a year or two to win one with Luck before it has to be blown up when Luck retires so we are still in the SAFE range of he doesn't get hurt of course.

  13. We're doomed. Polian, do something..:)

I'd say at a minimum we're at a point where if this rebuild/GM doesn't work, we can start getting nervous that we might not win one with Luck. Could still happen even when he's older because good QBs keep teams competitive.

I think Ballard is going to be the guy to get us into a Colts renaissance, simply looking at the teams he's been with and their philosophies (Chi/Kc...solid D franchise's almost yearly).

  14. Love it. He looks like he'll be a solid coach/mentor for us.

No harm in having a guy with 100+ sacks around who all the young players know. It isn't like a guy who was great 20 years ago who players can't relate to.

I'm sure some of these young pass rushers used Mathis playing video games in high school and college.
