  1. I just want to be clear that I understand you correctly. You are not happy with the hiring of ever Bruce Arians or Pep Hamilton as INDY OC's? I'm not criticizing you. I just would like to know that a) this question is actually what you meant & b) further clarification as to why you believe that. Bruce performed well in Pagano's absence & he would have never landed the HC job in AZ without it & Andrew's familiarity with Pep should make this 2nd year in the league a smooth transition correct? Feel free to disagree with me. I'm perfectly fine with it. I just would like more detail on your line of reasoning here. That's all. Thank you.

Arians was not our first choice. And he was run out of Pittsburg (not necessarily good or bad, just is what it is). At the time I thought he was a dead fish. I REALLY approved of his handling the team's culture and approach after Pagano went down. But his offensive style would've probably gotten a lesser QB killed. A lot of our success on offense I credit Luck with as opposed to Arians but I did like him (personally).

Nevertheless, we basically focused last year's Free-Agency and Draft selecting guys for Arians' system. He is now gone and we've moved to a West Coast offense. In my opinion, we should've done that from the beginning. With that said, Shaw may well not have wanted to position and maybe we could not find any other competent West Coast guys (highly unlikely).

  2. David Shaw is a hot candidate to be an NFL Head Coach.   There is zero chance at this point he's going back to the NFL as a coordinator.    Zero. He has his dream job.   He makes great money.   He has great support within the university.    He's been an NFL assistant and did NOT like the life. He has a wife and 3 small kids and the NFL life is not good for that. No chance Shaw would be interested.

Thanks for the correction regarding "Brian" Shaw. It didn't read right to me but I was busy.

A ton of conjecture there. The fact is neither of us knows...

    A. If he was offered the position.

    B. If offered an Offensive Coordinator position, he would've passed or accepted.

Nevertheless, he was my choice. And given the state of our Oline, probably would've been a much better choice. Especially when considering our ability to run the ball vs pass protect.

  3. This article (IMHO) highlights what I believe to have been Grigson & Pagano's only move that I have disagreed with....the hiring of Arians. I believed Stanford Head Coach Brian Shaw should've been hired as our Offensive Coordinator.

Much has been made of Robert Griffin III‘s knee and the lack of restraint the Washington Redskins exercised in keeping him out of harm’s way last season. However, what’s been far less publicized is the amount of punishment the Indianapolis Colts allowed their own rookie quarterback to take — more than any passer in the league last year. Of course, erstwhile offensive coordinator Bruce Arians wasn’t the one holding onto the ball well after the pocket collapsed. Though Arians’ scheme does maximize the threat of longer-developing routes, Andrew Luck must make his own adjustments going forward even with Arians departing for Arizona.
  4. No, no...you're thinking CB. If we have two really cool looking Corners on the ends....then it'll make a huge difference for our ILBs! ;)

Take a quick look. Is it dead yet?

    Unfortunately....no.

I leave the boards thinking maybe...but then I'll log back in and doggonit if it aint there in some other thread. So....

You CAN mask average - below average LB play with good corners. Rex has been doing it his entire time in NY.

    See! ;)

    The dead horse lives!

I tried to tell folks it was dead. Grigson actually dispatched it 7 times. But...it still lives.

  5. Don't underestimate the guys up front when evaluating ILB.   Ray Lewis we very good with Saragosa in front of him.   Once Goose was gone, his numbers went down.  When Ngata came in, Lewis's numbers got better again.   I think Freeman and Angerer are two very good linebackers.  Not prime Ray Lewis,  but very good.    If they have three big,  strong DLineman in front of them, it will make a HUGE difference in performance.

No, no...you're thinking CB. If we have two really cool looking Corners on the ends....then it'll make a huge difference for our ILBs! ;)

  6. ???   Bro you are flipping out over a postilion that has been given A  LOT of attention. Toler, Landry,    ...   Indy traded a second rounder LAST SEASON for DAVIS.  Attention has been paid to the position.

If a team is "TOUGH" up front "everything" else falls in place.........

    No, that is NOT enough!

We MUST draft at least two more CBs next year. One to replace Butler and the other for Vaughn. I wish we'd have grabbed D'supre Studb from Cornerback State as an UDFA. I know it is a smaller school and I haven't seen much tape on him but I heard from my cousin's friend who is a grounds keeper at the publically funded municiple stadium that Cornerback State plays at...that he is a beast. He sent me a video he shot from his iPhone of him and I was blown away! I mean cmon man, he as to be better than Vaughn! And...what do we REALLY know about Toler anyway...so he played for a very good defense...big whoop!

And you're wrong. Great CBs create pass rush. Cmon that is basic chat forum commonsense man!

Cornerback: The Cornerstone (no pun intended) To The 3/4 Defense.

  7. So, that leaves ILB. Right now, I don't see anyone on the roster who has anywhere near the talent that Ray Lewis brought to the table. Angerer, Freeman and Conner are nice players, but none of them have the talent to keep Offensive Coordinators up long past midnight, trying to figure out how to stop them. It's a big hole, and you've got to figure that addressing it will be job 1 in 2014.

Oh no!!! We must draft CB next season. THAT is no doubt our biggest need. A shutdown corner is going to generate the sacks you desire. ;) [/sarcasm]

  8. Of the 90 players that are currently on the Colts Training Camp roster, I was a bit shocked to see how few “old” veterans were on the team. I knew mentally that we were a youngish team but when you put it on paper, I was a bit shocked.

    The “Ancient Ones”:

Adam Vinatieri = 18th season (8th with the Colts; has it really been that long?) Matt Hasslebeck = 15th season Reggie Wayne = 13th season Robert Mathis, Cory Redding, Aubrayo Franklin = 11th season

One backup QB, one placekicker (who can kick until their 90), three outright stud starters (Wayne, Mathis, Redding) and one NT.

But, after those six guys, we drop down three season to the next most senior Colt. Did you know who that was before looking?

    2nd Contract Veterans:

Antoine Bethea = 8th season Samson Satele, LaRon Landry = 7th season Donald Thomas, Erik Walden, Gosder Cherilus, Mike McGlynn = 6th season Donald Brown, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Vonte Davis, Greg Toler, Darius Butler, Ricky Jean-Francois, Fili Moala, Lawrence Sidbury, Pat McAfee = 5th season

So, 6 “ancient” veterans and only another 16 guys who are past their rookie contract. An even 22 players that are past their rookie contract on the Colts (the same number that is our starting offense and defense squads combined).

So, that math tells me that of the 22 players past their rookie contracts, only 12 are likely starters for the team on offense or defense (Wayne, Mathis, Redding, Bethea, Landry, Thomas, Walden, Cherilus, Heyward-Bey, Davis, Toler, RJF).

Add in our rookies and our other studs luck, Ballard, fleener, Allen, Costanzo, Hilton, Brazill, Chapman, Angerer/Connor/Freeman, and half of our starters could be on their rookie contracts.

Anyway, just some interesting numbers. I was just surprised at how young the team is once you put it on paper.

We have a great mix of youth and experience that could have the colts set for the next 5-10 years. Kudos to Grigson for adding experienced youth.

Also, seeing as we aren't littered with end of career veterans and our cap is static, it gives Grigson the draft and free agency to replace players like Mathis, Wayne, Redding.

As always; clear eyed, insightful OP. Thanks Bronx.

  9. darn.....     I feel so bad for that poor, poor, poor horse....     beaten to a bloody pulp.....     so, so sad....

...and yet this horse...this silly, uninformed horse...this horse that has had its existience rebuked by the Colts GM...this horse continues to live....in all of its incompetent...prideful glory. ;)

  10. I really hope he is training/lifting properly. In the NFL you MUST workout your entire body and not just (like many DBs do) your upper-body. The wrong kind of training can leave a player open to injury...and I wonder if this has played a part in his previous injuries. I know he has some nonsensical notions regarding health and healing. We'll see. And regardless of the workouts being voluntary or not, this is a new team for him and I'd rather he be here for everything.

  11. I too have been meaning to post this. Here are my thoughts...

1: Bjoern Werner (DE-FSU) - Grigson and Pagano understand our team needs and the ability of the coaching staff to coach him up and employ his skills. Grade: A+

3: Hugh Thornton ( OG- Illinois) - Grigson and Pagano understand our team needs and the ability of the coaching staff to coach him up and employ his skills. Grade: A+

4: Khaled Holmes (C- USC) - Grigson and Pagano understand our team needs and the ability of the coaching staff to coach him up and employ his skills. Grade: A+

5: Montori Hughes  (NT- UT Martin) - Grigson and Pagano understand our team needs and the ability of the coaching staff to coach him up and employ his skills. Grade: A+

6: John Boyett ( S-Oregon) - Grigson and Pagano understand our team needs and the ability of the coaching staff to coach him up and employ his skills. Grade: A+

7: Kerwynn Williams ( HB- Utah State) - Grigson and Pagano understand our team needs and the ability of the coaching staff to coach him up and employ his skills. Grade: A+

7: Justice Cunningham ( TE- South Carolina) - Grigson and Pagano understand our team needs and the ability of the coaching staff to coach him up and employ his skills. Grade: A+

Overall: A+. In this draft, our FO have just stolen so many high potential/Under the radar steals, it's ridiculous. Yes MANY DID complain about bringing in big named prospects, however I was not one of them. Still have no clue why some wanted a CB. Nevertheless with UDFAs like Sheldon Price, I hope their nonsensical rantings are over....................for now.

  12. If the Panthers release Williams I think we should consider trying to get him, at a reduced number because he is currently over paid.  I am not saying trade for him just if they release him.  He is still a great runner and is good in the pass game.  Thoughts?

He'd be an IMMEDIATE upgrade vis-a-vis our 2nd Runningback. If he is willing to come at a reduced rate then I wouldn't mind the move. Be mindful, we are already around the $7-10 million (after paying our rookies) spending cushion that we'd want to have going into the season. So, to sign him, we'd probably be eating into that.
