  1. We've all picked our share of stinkers and I'm still wiping the egg off my face from that one. This is why I try not to take these pre-draft opinions.... including my own.... TOO seriously and consider it fun more than anything.

    Great post.

  2. I'd look more at his games against top competition than his combine numbers...

I would agree and that seems to be the mantra Grigs is operating by. But you do look deeper than just his performance against top competition. You look at his technique and his coaching. Was he using excellent technique (well coached) and still not getting it done? Or was he rough around the edges. If the latter, you can definitely coach him up. A lot of facets to player eveluation. One thing is for certain, he has the phydical gifts needed to be a monster NT. So that is out of the way. Now it comes down to brainpower, coaching and execution (or lack thereof).

  3. Adam Schefter's reporting as of late has been somewhat questionable in terms of his sources not always being accurate.

    ^^^^That^^^^

    Schefter has said...

"First candidate the Colts tried to hire for vacant GM job was New England's director of player personnel Nick Caserio." < Irsay said it was not true.

"It's almost a formality that the Colts will release Peyton Manning."

"Peyton would agree to be flexible with contract demands with a new team, accepting an incentive-laden deal that takes into account his rehab from the Sept. 8 neck surgery." < Something Manning himself scoffed at. Saying the only thing he has told his agent is that he is focused on rehab.

"Manning & Irsay would've ironed things out earlier if the Super Bowl had not been in Indy."

"That something will happen by the time the combine rolls around because it is also in Indy."

  4. Not sure if the combine numbers will or will not affect his stock. But if it does and he rises out of the 2nd round, I am not as hopeless as I may have been at one time with Polian. Grigs is prepared to make moves via Free Agency. So that leaves some room to hope we can land a legitimate NT.

  5. Foster was quoted as saying he is now at about 295lbs, Fili Moala is 303, Ricardo Matthews is 294, Jamal Anderson is 280. Drake Nevis is 294, Ogbu is 280, Brayton is 280. All these players can play the DE/DT role. Freeney, Mathis, Hughes, Angerer, Connor, Freeman, Hickman, Harvey, Sims, and Wheeler are linebackers that can fit in a hybride defense. We need NTs other than Johnson who can be space eaters. Caldwell and Lefeged can improve at SS. Bethea is a Pro Bowl level FS. Powers is a solid CB if he can avoid injuries. The Colts are only a couple of players away on defense. The offense needs maybe a C and 2 Gs. Grigson has to sign as many players as he can under the salary cap and draft or trade for the rest.

Of those I hope to see Moala, Brayton, Harvey & Sims let go. Not saying they aren't good players (Moala isn't) but IMO we don't need/have room for them. Hopefully Nevis and a couple of others can bulk up in order to try and fill a NT rotation during camp. I don't know though. And I sure hope we can find a fit for Jamal Anderson. That guy gave it 110% and came through.

  6. the only people that dont wanna draft him are peyton fans. all of us TRUE colt fans want luck.

    I'll take that as tongue-in-cheek.

I love Manning and believe HE STILL IS the greatest QB in the history of the game. I want us to bring him back AND draft Andrew Luck. And I believe it is doable (financially, team planning, personnel & depth, talent etc, etc).

  7. From Pagano:

    • Called Freeney and Mathis "game-wreckers"
    • The Colts will transition to a 3-4 defensive scheme
    • The Colts system of smaller players has worked in the past, but team will get bigger at specific need positions
    • The transition will be hard, but not impossible
    • Colts system will work well with players the Colts will bring to camp
    • Pagano has spoken to Jeff Saturday, who is pondering retirement. Pagano wants him to stay
    • Pagano had high praise for Andrew Luck
    • When asked about Peyton Manning, Pagano said Manning will do everything to play again

Some good news. I was concerned with Free & Mathis but if Pagano wants them, great! And transitioning is not impossible. If we can land some good talent in the draft and FA, we could see an instant upgrade.

  8. The comment about Peyton going to Kravitz...Kravitz has just penned 2 articles; one about Polian (attack) and one about Caldwell wherein he basically said the fall of these 2 men were because they did not open up. So Peyton professionally returns the phone call of Kravitz and decides to talk a little from the heart and IMO Kravitz saw it as a HUGE opportunity to get the spot light on HIM. SB was coming and there is no bigger story than Peyton never being able to play again and certainly not for the colts because somehow that would be a bad descision. But as he says he has the best sources and talks to Irsay and Manning, really, thanks, I feel like they really are your friends too. :) I dont get it. I just hear negative after negative, he just has nothing positive to say. I dont feel like his perspective is the majority of people but yet he acts like his thoughts are foregone conclusions that others just have not got to yet.

    Spot on.

  9. For the life of me, I do not know why anyone would allow themselves to seriously consider/read/listen to anything from Kravitz aka "Noodle Arm". He has shown himself to be a sports page hype/opinion/click man more than an insightful sports writer. He was a BIG reason Polian quickly dismissed any interaction between the team and the Indianapolis Star (that and their biased coverage of the building of a new stadium).

Having played a part in driving off the Best General Manager in Colts franchise history, he has desperately attempted to manufacture a new shtick...driving off the Best Quarterback in Colts franchise history.

Regardless, nobody will ever mistake him as the Best Sportswriter in metropolitan Indianapolis' history.

  10. I see no conceivable benefit to the Colts. They have a brand new GM, who theoretically (assuming he actually plans to do all the homework that he is supposed to do) doesn't yet have sufficient information to make a decision. And that's ignoring the risk of Luck deciding to go bungy jumping without a cord in the meantime. There is a reason that after months of preparation, teams still spend their entire allotment of time on draft day deciding who to pick. The Colts should keep their options open as long as they possibly can. Neither Luck (nor the #1 overall pick) are going anywhere.

My understanding is that the Colts do not complete their final evaluations both scouting and medical before early April. If that is true and there is still more information to be had vis-a-vis Luck's health & the Team's Final report then I don't draft him until that time. Now between early April and draft day, no problem. If we get everything in and we're solid on the choice then yeah, sign him as soon as possible.
