  1. I've got to agree with Brent here. Manning is dripping with dignity & integrity. Please never put that clown Farve in the same sentence with #18 ever again. Manning wanted to remain a Colt for life while Favre, the spoiled cry baby that he inherently is, held the Green Bay franchise in limbo because he loved being the center of attention.

No disrespect intended... I withdraw the term. It's just for those of us not involved we're pretty sick of the breathless coverage of who sent their plane, the flight plan that was filed, who drove the car blah blah blah. That's the part I meant in using the term, Favre-ing, the media circus, not that Peyton was anything like Favre.

I have posted here defending Peyton to his own fans.

  2. As someone who employs an agent (actually several agents in an agency) - your take on things, Mac is absolutely right on. There is a hierarchy in businesses. The top producers are more highly sought after and you can't get around it. In my agency there are perhaps 20 different artists of which I'm in perhaps the to10-15%. I don't feel slighted if I didn't get a particular contract because another artist had "the look." It's just part of the job and part of my agent's job is to do the best they can for ME while representing their other clients as well. They get the job done.

  3. The net savings isn't quite that much. Yes they are saving $3.25 of cap space for Volek and $750k bonus, but they are paying Whitehurst a $1m signing bonus and $4m over two years. All in all, not much of a cap savings and more cash paid out now.

Net cap this year is the most important, I think it's ending up at $1.5 M saved. We've been running REALLY tight with a lot of needs.
  4. You know, I just can't help but think how different all of this would be playing out if the Colts had had a quality backup QB ready to step in for Manning. He would be getting ready to play this season instead of Favre-ing it out there to the rest of the league.

  5. Some short memories out there. He led the Chargers to a 4th qtr comeback in the 2007 playoffs against the Colts.

Little curious why the Chargers would let him go to sign Charlie Whitehurst as their backup. That should send up a red flag.

Pure $ savings and we already know Charlie Whitehurst, he knows the system etc. Saves $3.25 off the salary cap for us and $750,000 bonus to be paid 3/22. He's a FA next season anyway.
  6. He's been content not playing for several years - at peace with the fact he won't start again. He's 36. Great teammate to Rivers, they are best friends and he works hard to get him prepped for the games, studies film, talks to him all game long about what he sees out there. Philip calls him his second set of eyes.

Don't know about his arm strength as we haven't seen much of him on the field.

  7. The key to the Chargers' offense, like most good offenses, is the O-line protection. If Rivers' protection holds up, he will have a very good year and should be able to get the ball out to Meachem, Floyd and Gates without issues.

You're dead on Chad - big part of Rivers' poor year was a porous front line that couldn't hold the pocket for him. Jared Gaither really started the turn around when we picked him up the last 5 games last year. He's a BEAST - what a gift KC gave us, LOL!
  8. No solid figures are out yet except 3 years, but basically the unofficial word is we replaced VJ with Meacham and Royal at basically 2 for 1 $ wise. I'm quite happy with the result AND got a top flight PR/KR while we're at it. We've really needed some health and depth for our WR core. The last two years have been terrible injury wise.

  9. It happens with every mega-star that leaves their primary team. AND it's totally unfair of fans to expect Peyton to do anything except what's best for his career... PERIOD. The Colts released him, he didn't go explore the market. If he goes to the Titans, that's where he goes for himself and where he believes he has the best chance for a Superbowl.

We went through it when LaDainian Tomlinson was released and he didn't have as much gas left in the tank as PM does - assuming he can recover in the first place. It was NASTY. People were awful to a man that had given his heart and soul to his team and his city. Only now, two years later are the fans finding the soft spot in their hearts they once had for him.

I hate to say it but it will probably go much the same around here for PM and the fans.

  10. All I can say is that I hope my team never spends that much on one player - it makes it impossible to support him and last I knew, football is a team sport. Look at Fitzgerald without a franchise QB to throw to him. Got to have all the pieces to win.

  11. The team agreed to terms with former Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem on a four-year, $25.9-million contract with $14 million fully guaranteed, a league source said Tuesday night. Meachem will bring a big-play element back to an offense that lost Pro Bowl wide receiver Vincent Jackson in free agency hours earlier.

The rest of the article is here: http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/mar/13/chargers-finally-make-splash-sign-meachem/

His contract will cost 1/2 what Vincent Jackson would have cost - we give up some with him, but still and excellent #1 WR and he's younger and healthier. I like this pickup.

  12. Love him. He's a really GOOD man on top of being a great team mate and competitor. His problems are serious and repetitive injuries that might signal the end for him - or of course he might surprise. Chargers actually want him back at a lower contract. Any team that takes him should be careful not to over pay with the fact he could go out at any time.

  13. Shed a tear on my hubby's shoulder when it was finalized. VJ is awesome to root for. He's so clutch and few people have as good sideline awareness as he does. Good luck to him there - just glad he's not in our division.

  14. Wow, I couldn't believe all the cuts today. What a crummy end to a crummy week.

I have to be honest - the Colts have been my second favorite team but that may have just come to an end. It's too much work to get to know a virtually completely new team and be patient to see them succeed. If it were my primary team, I'd be there, but I don't think it's worth the emotional effort for me.

At this point, I'm just seriously hoping Peyton doesn't land in the AFC west.

And, just a nougat for thought, as the owners of one of the two previously worst QBs ever drafted, (Ryan Leaf anyone?) Don't put too much stress on the whole "Suck for Luck" concept - it's about 50/50 on top picks working out. Suck for Luck could easily end up Suck with Luck...

  15. I just came by to console my friends - it was a rough day for me and I haven't even had a chance to see the video, so I can't even fully comprehend how it felt for you guys. These are the days in sports that you never forget... the lows that make the highs that eventually follow a little sweeter.

I'm glad you have an active grief recovery group going here :-) It helps!

EDIT: Okay, just watched the press conference, that was heart rending. Peyton went out with class - I would expect nothing less. It's obvious that those two respect and love each other. You couldn't ask for a better "break up" but break ups still hurt.

  16. Well Im ready to rally around our new leader... LETS GO ANDREW!

As a Charger's fan (as well as a Colt's fan) I can tell you #1 picks don't always work out like you think you will. Peyton is an amazing KNOWN quantity - Andrew Luck is nothing more than potential.
