  1. For me it's really simple... take a look at what these same kind of guys predicted at the beginning of the season for the league and then look where we are today. "Conventional wisdom" is anything but accurate in predicting the outcome of sports games. Therefore it doesn't really matter to me what they say now. The only thing we'll ever know is next year after Manning is back on the field and we see who is with him there.

  2. No offense. But it doesn't matter who wins your division. They aren't going very far in the playoffs.

No offense taken... but then... we'll go farther than the Colts will ;-) AND IF we can pull it off we're almost totally healthy. We were the 4th worst injured team during our 6 game skid. We were injured worse than the Colts. We could be dangerous IFwe can get there.
  3. If he can stay healthy, he'll be quite a find for us. Marcus McNeill is rumored to be thinking about retiring for his health as is Diehlman (after his seizue and major concussion) losing the big, talented probowlers is potentially devastating and yet Gaither, Greene and Vasquez have been flawless in three games.

It would be nice if the gamble on him would pay off like the Saints gamble on Brees paid off :-)

  4. I hate to say it, but I think New England will bring Tebow and the Broncos back down to earth this week. Should be a good game though. I also think that the Giants and Chargers both win because they seem to play their best ball at the end of the season when its do or die time. Oh yeah, and Colts finally win!

Boy did you get pretty much all of them all right!!! 3 out of 4 long shots isn't too bad :-)
  5. Barry;

Take care, get better and get back here!

As to Gaither, we're thrilled with him. When we lost Marcus McNeill to IR we had absolutely NO idea what we were going to do. Not only had we lost so many OL starters, but our backup linemen were out as well. We've started 11 different OL players because of the injuries.

The 3 wins in a row are directly attributable to what he's done in giving Rivers time to throw. We all know what a good QB can do if he gets protection and what he can't do much of when he's getting hit and beat up and put on his back.

Merry Christmas and get better soon!

  6. I think our shot at the playoffs is somewhere right about a 5% probability, one of our sports reporters calculated it. We really blew it this year. Of course that was helped along by the third straight year of insane injuries. We were down to 2 experienced offensive linemen at one point and the rest had started I think a whole 5 Chargers' games between them.... Rivers has a quick release, but 2 seconds "protection" just doesn't cut it. Jared Gaither pulled our bacon out of the fire (thanks KC!) The difference in the last two games is the protection and having all three major weapons back on the field at the same time.

It sure would be a great story if we could just get to the playoffs :-)

  7. I wouldn't mind if the Chargers gave him a shot again next year or the Colts - that is if he's going to play. The only down side is you had better be prepared to have a plan B because chances are you're going to need it.

I agree with Superman, I think he'd make a great coach and I'd like to see him make the transition rather than keep destroying what's left of his body.

  8. They didn't trade him they let him leave as a free agent.

At the time Rivers was drafted Brees looked like a bust. Then he had a great season when they let Rivers sit and came back and played the next year and then he suffered a major shoulder injury and his contract was up so the Chargers had to make a choice, either trade Rivers and resign Brees unsure what he would be like after his injury or play Rivers and just let Brees walk. They choose to do the later.

Hindsight... I loved Brees when we had him, but his shoulder injury was severe and it was really iffy whether he would be himself again. Also, he wasn't as good as he is now. If we had crystal balls all of us would be great GMs.

Wouldn't it be amazing if we could run alternate universe timelines and see what "would've been" ... but we miss out on the flip side of that equation. What if he stayed here and was injured in a play that didn't happen in NO? He just as easily could have been a footnote in history. Only God knows and He's not tellin'!

  9. Rivers has struggled early in the year, and most of that was his own fault. The past two games we're down to 2 Offensive linemen, 2 of our original starters are playing. Tell me a single team that can win with that situation. Not an excuse, but it is the reason for the struggles the last two games. He's on his butt way too much or hurried or his receivers are dropping passes in their hands or they're running the wrong routes and aren't where they should be.

Lots of parts of this machinery that are contributing to it's being broken.

  10. Rivers is having a seriously crappy year - but I am unaware of any serious talk of him retiring, get real. He's a mentally tough guy who abhores losing. He's usually able to mentally shut it off after he makes a mistake and move on. This year he's forcing things that aren't there and that's where most of his mistakes are. His mistakes are the kind made by someone who cares "too much" and takes "too much responsibility." I'd rather have that kind of leader than someone who's in it for himself.

He'll get it turned around. Whether it will be in time for this year - I don't know. Much more fun to watch our games when he's hot I will admit ;-)

  11. A little premature MUCH?! Tebow has a long way to go before he deserves any consideration as a "great" QB. Once there's a little more film on him, I anticipate teams figuring out more of how to shut him down. That and a big shot or two that shakes him up - running QBs don't tend to be particularly durable over the long haul.

A team wins the SB as a team - one player, even a great QB can't bring them there all on their own.

  12. Was reading the reactions on the Chargers message boards ..didn't realize he'd won over so many hearts in his brief stint there.

Yeah, he really did. It was his attitude. He was one of the hardest working guys on the team. I firmly believe he gave it all and left it on the field. He was either going to play hard and set the tone for the rest of the D or not be there. It made the younger guys step up. There is tremendous respect on the team for him and for Takeo Spikes. The guys were really broken up when they heard he went to IR. Short stint - big impact. By the way, the Chargers were willing to wait for him to heal - he's the one that took himself to IR. He knew he couldn't be what he could or should be. That's CLASS.

I got to root for him when he played for the Colts (any time they weren't playing my Chargers) so I knew how good he could be, I think his skill surprised a lot of the Charger's fans that don't watch that closely.

  13. I watched the first half of the game last night on NFL Rewind before I fell asleep. I'll have to finish the game tonight. Painter did well when he got protection - that's a big WHEN. He was being pummeled constantly. He made some really fine throws, threading the needle.

Come on COLTS if there's anytime to get your first win, tomorrow is the day. Beat KC :-) You can do it!
