The thing about that is how do we know about what talent has already passed us by?  There is no way of knowing is there?  The so called smarter minds of football are very often dead wrong.

From what I understand is Ballard has been working on his list of coaches for a long time. We have no clue as to is on that list and why they are on that list. Just how do you know who is on Ballards A, B or C list?

To make a blanket statement just as you have is jumping to a conclusion that you, me nor anyone else knows.

Again, he preaches competition at every level,  if we are to believe him (and i do), it means he assembled HIS (not the) strongest candidates for the initial interviews.  Its not that big of a reach, I take him at his word.  His best candidates went toe to toe and McD won.  Not saying he can't find a good choice now but whoever it is and however it works out, dude wasnt in his top 3.  That's closer to fact than blanket statement (if you trust what Ballard says he does, and again, I do).

He said in his press conference today that because of the NFL rules regarding coaches in the playoffs that he wasn't able to interview everyone he would have liked to simply because he couldn't get to everyone in the allotted time frame.  Frank Reich and Dan Campbell quite possibly could have been on his short list but because of wanting to interview McDaniels and the others he couldn't get to them. After they had interviewed McDaniels, they thought they had their man so there was no need to try and get permission to talk to the other potential coaches. We all know that whoever ends up the head coach wasn't the first pick. All I am saying is that just because they weren't the first choice it doesn't mean that Ballard and Irsay look at them as second rate.

I heard what he said.  Point is he allotted his time in accordance to his philosophy.  He found time for the Baylor kid.  Point is either you believe his competition mantra or you don't.  I believe him.  Its a seperate issue from his talent evaluation.  I trust he brought in his top choices the first time around.  If Reich was equal to McDaniels in his mind they would have interviewed toe to toe.  Can't gave both ways.  Not saying Reick isn't a good option, just saying that he had the same schedule as McD and didn't get a whiff until now.

How do we know that the Colts won't be hiring any of Ballard's "A list" coaches? He made it clear today that after they interviewed McDaniels they thought that he was the direction they wanted to go. Although the next coach obviously won't be the first choice it doesn't mean it is going to be a second tier or scrub choice. Granted, some of the others that Ballard interviewed before have found other jobs but that doesn't mean they were who the Colts were looking for or who Ballard wanted. I really think we need to relax a little and let Ballard go back to his list which I'm sure was more than just McDaniels, Vrabel, Nagy, Wilks, Rhule, and Toub. If I were a betting man, I would say that Ballard's list has at least 15-20 possible head coaches on it. After hearing him speak this morning, I am supremely confident in our general manager and his ability to find the coach to lead us back to the top of the AFC South, the AFC, and the NFL.

His top choices were interviewed initially.  Why would he hold off interviewing one of his A listers in case McDaniels dropped out.  This is a man that preaches competition at every level.  I take him at his word.  His first batch of interviews was, in his assessment, the top competitors.  By his own philosophy, the people he considered the best options have already passed through.

How am I having fun? Coming to this forum and discussing football is fun. Being able to take a few moments of my day and not have to worry about the responsibilities of work, family, and life is fun. You are right it is a sport, and to me sports is entertainment. It is not battle no matter how many knees are blown out. The people who are getting their knees blown out or are racking up concussions are doing so by THEIR CHOICE. I'm not trying to sound insensitive, but no one is forced to play football for a living. The players are paid quite handsomely for the blown knees and concussions. They are paid far more than men and women who actually put their lives on for their work. I don't begrudge players for the money they make anymore than I begrudge Tom Cruise for the money he makes for a movie or the Rolling Stones make every time they go out on tour. In America we place a high value on our entertainers far more than we do our educators. I respect the hard work and effort that it takes to be professional athlete, but let's be honest if we weren't entertained by sports then these men would not be playing football for a living. Sure they love the game and they work very hard at their crafts but at the end of the day they make more for 1 game than the majority of us make in a year. I'm sorry but most athletes don't live in the "real world" with the rest of us.

As for rivalries, again that goes back to making it entertaining. It's fun to think of things in terms of good guys and bad guys. Colts fans see the Patriots and see the "bad guys". It's fun to think of Bill Belichick like he is Emperor Palpatine. It is fun to think that it really is us versus them. In reality, most of the rivalries in sport exist for the fans. I'm not saying that there aren't teams that actually hate each other, but I think for the most part these "rivalries" are more in the fans heads than the players.

Please don't get me wrong, I want the Colts to win. It is much more entertaining and fun to win than it is to lose. At the end of the day though, the Colts are an escape for me. For a few minutes each day here and a couple of hours each Sunday, I can be a 40 something man wearing a Marvin Harrison jersey enjoying a game. Believe me, I respect what these men are able to do on a football field, but at the end of the day it is still a game, and games are supposed to be entertaining.

Fair enough,  I hope you remain entertained.  I certainly won't try to rob you of that.

  5. Its not really about optimism or pessimism. Its about realism.  At this point what is the level of talent that is available to us and how can Ballard, with the help of Mr. Irsay, maximize it.  Like it or not, McDaniels set us back and took us out of the running for what was considered "top talent".  That hurts, no question.  I felt better after Ballard presser too, that's a talent of his, but the reality remains.  The colts won't be hiring any of Ballard's A list coaches.  It may work out, it may not, but we're looking for our top guys quite below Ballard initial ceiling.

Big deal if they have owned us in recent years! This is entertainment. This is supposed to be fun. Sometimes I think we take this stuff way too seriously. Like Ballard said today at the start of his presser there are things far more important than football. In my opinion we need to have more fun and enjoy all of this. Why be stressed about everything that has happened? I love the Colts and have since the day they moved to Indianapolis, but if they go 0-16 next year my life will still be good and I'll still be a fan. Don't get me wrong, I want the team to win but in the big scheme of things it really isn't that important. Let's have more fun and have more rivalries!

I agree to a degree, but what exactly are you having fun with right now?  The organization we love looks like a clown show in a M.A.S.H unit...Honestly, I'm not losing sleep at night over the Colts but I care enough to want them to actually be competitive before marketing a sassy Tee.  If all I want is breezy entertainment there are far more rewarding venues.  This is a sport, a contest, not the latest Marvel movie. The reason it's enjoyable is because its real:  the competition, the struggle, the pain, and the ability to overcome.  Hell it's entire history is sold to us as grown men meeting on the field in glorious battle.  As hilarious as that may sound in the "grand scheme" of things it is the truth.  To the people getting their knees blown out and racking up concussions like quarters in an office vending machine it's more than simple entertainment.  It deserves to be treated with, at least, a bit of the same gravity as the "real world" pains we all lament.  But I digress....In short, true rivalries are earned, based on mutual respect and competitive play.  They don't exist, for me (and most likely the Pats), because a snarky Tee says so.

  7. Just stop, there is no "rivalry".  Pats own us.  Next to them we've been like a little boy playing make-believe in his daddy's suit.  Win.  Hell, put together a coaching staff and field a QB you havent gotten killed, THEN talk rivalry......Sorry fellow fans, I know this is gonna be unpopular, but until we field a competitive squad, this rah rah stuff is embarrassing.......fire away.......

  8. McD doesn't have to "win me over".  Assuming he's announced as the new HC Monday I'm all in.  I trust he was Ballards #1 choice, Denver was a long time ago, and under much different circumstances (too young and given too much power).  In our current dynamic he's got my full faith and confidence.  The more appropriate question for us, as the colt's faithful, should be "what would McD have to do to lose the fanbase".  The man deserves a clean slate and an open mind, he's picking up where a five year disaster left off (plus a 6th of Pags 'n Co.).  If he's equally incompetent, it will become known in the fullness of time. I'd rather assume he'll be a tremendous success and leave it up to him to prove otherwise......

Here's the deal: We need a lot, just about everywhere. In fact we now know we need more now than we did this time last year. This time last year Irsay said the the OL was fixed and Luck was coming back.

We now know the line is broke and Luck is a question mark.

So last time I checked we have more than one draft pick to address our needs PLUS FA which we once again have lots of cap space to spend.

To bypass a Super Star, game changer, playmaker generational talent at a much needed position for us because of needs elsewhere is foolish. We still have plenty resources besides the 3rd overall pick to acquire talent.

As far as Chubb vs Barkley, either one woyld be a good pick but Barkley is the higher rated prospect and also the safer pick and would get immediate production from like the Cowboys got from Zeke.

    Im done talking about it.

It may be moot anyway. If Luck is still hurt we may be drafting Darnold. How does that grab you?haha

It may be the only rational post I've read all day.....

Hey Buck....I have been on the IR for about a year.  I missed all of the great people on the Colts Forum.  I was physically and mentally unable to remember things or debate.  I will hopefully be back.  I had heart surgery 3 days ago.  I was not getting enough O2 to my brain.  I also had a severe wound from passing out while in afib.  Mental is back....3 months for the IR to end. :)

See I still rumble and bumble a little.  :)  (I hate the Patriots and the Jags.  HAHA!)

Sorry to hear about your health concerns,  I have a few of my own and I know how draining it can be.  Just gotta fight man.  Sounds like your getting up though and will be ready for round 2!   I don't know you but I'm wishing you a fast and total recovery!

I have been thinking a lot about these two, both great players and both would fill huge gaping holes on our team (assuming Gore is gone). I dont believe drafting a Guard in the top 10 is realistic, which got me thinking what if we were to use our #3 pick on Barkley and somehow trade back up in to the first round to aquire Nelson, do you think if he is still available at say..20-25, we try to make a move, that would be a huge boost for the team if we could get both of these guys. What would it take?

I'd be more inclined to trade back a few spots (if possible) and take BPA.  Im no draftnic but it might be possible to get a Barkley, Nelson, or Chubb, and add a couple picks if the qb frenzy reaches a full boil.

  13. Obviously none of us know how this will play out.  We've been over the past with McD ad nauseam, what's done is done.  What gives me hope for the future is that McDaniels, by most accounts, is Ballard's #1 choice.  This is the man he sees as the most capable of carrying out his vision, and I do believe Ballard has a vision for this franchise.  This type of cohesion from the top down is exactly what we need post Pagano.  We all love Pagano but its undeniable that the Pags/Grigs era was marred by infighting, devoid of a global identity, and characterized by a lack of growth.  This hiring, if it indeed happens, signifies a solid foundation we can build on.  Three pieces (including Mr.Irsay) at the top in lockstep.  Past aside and future be damned, this truly feels like a rebirth for the shoe.  I for one, will embrace it.  Hopefully the men charged with seeing it thru are up to the task.

Josh called an awesome game tonight. Can't wait for that play calling and offense to come to Indy. I would look for Josh to ask Ballard for a big gronk body type TE. What he has been able to do with Lewis, white, and Blount the (previously). I dont think we need a high draft pick RB.

I just kept imagining that offense running with the Shoe on the side of their lids.......I'm game, sincerely hope McDaniels gets his second shot in Indy.

  15. 1.  Andrew luck

    2.  3rd overall pick

    3.  Ballard

    4.  Tremendous cap space

    5.  An owner always willing to spend

    6.  An owner with proven patience

    7.  An owner desperate to win and rehab (shhhhh) his reputation after an entire season of having his honesty and judgement impugned.....

I just have to say Indy would seem a top job to land.  I'll be excited if it's McDaniels.  And I have to believe he'd be excited to land here......only time will tell and the wait is killing me, but i just cant see how the Colts shouldn't be able to land their top candidate....
