It's actually really simple. JB isn't good at throwing the ball down the field, and he and the staff know it.

You keep presenting this argument that throwing downfield isn't valuable, and that's just dead wrong. But that's a discussion for another day.

You and others also keep presenting this argument that, because the receivers aren't the guys the team expected to have at the beginning of the year, it's not possible to be productive throwing down the field. But there's a reason players wear the same color uniform in games, and we have ocular proof of receivers open in various spots on the field, including down the field, but not being targeted. The first prerequisite for downfield production is receivers getting open; the second is the QB throwing the ball. The first is happening, the second is not.

We don't need to muddy the waters on this, even though that's your MO. It's clear cut, plain and obvious. JB has bad downfield numbers because he's not good at that part of the game.

Great post. And I would give you another "upvote" just for the use of "ocular"...but I can't.

Imagine you're Reich and you've spent half of the season calling plays with receivers at different levels -- deep, intermediate, and short, and Brissett repeatedly throws short.

Do you continue calling those plays, or decide to play to Jacoby's strength -- short passing game. Not a quick short passing game, just a short passing game where Jacoby takes forever to decide what he wants to do, and then dumps it off late to the RB.

Or maybe you just starting running it 70% of the time.

Yeah...JB is a good dude...but when people say they feel bad for him...I can’t help but laugh a little. He luckboxed into a starting QB job and then got a one-year $28M extension before even playing a snap.

I understand their reasons for doing it...but I wish they hadn’t. But since they did...I hope they take advantage and bring in a rookie to groom.

I’m certain most GMs don’t think, “we can get our QB of the future in the 2nd Rd or later” when it’s definitely a priority.

Yeah...I can’t imagine a GM having that mindset...unless they just inexplicably loved a couple of middle round prospects.

And even in that case...they are taking them earlier than they probably need to.

I am all for using a 1st on a guy they want...and I don’t think Ballard will mess around. But he will have a lot more intel in a few months...and can plan accordingly.

I get your point, I am sure Ballard agree's. JB even by my eye ball test doesn't suck. We are just used to Peyton and Luck. Ballard may draft a QB and to be honest I would be happy if he did but not in round 1. He may get a gem in round 2 or 3 or so.

I think 2nd round is as low as he goes...but we will really just don't know anything (yet) about how he will approach it. QB is just such a different position than any other when it comes to drafting.

How can he be both of those things?

Also...Florio really likes JB...and I am sure it has nothing to do with the team that drafted him.

None of those QB's had a GM like Ballard either. If Ballard is a top 5 GM in the league which many think so then he can build a good team around any average QB and we should have a shot of winning it all. Honestly I would take JB over any of the QB's you just named as well.

But my point is...even if he could build around an average QB...why should he? For starters, no GM is good enough to build a consistent Super Bowl team without a legit QB. Dorsey was pretty damn good in KC...and those teams were talented...yet they won 1 playoff game in 4-5 years.

If Ballard is truly a top 5 GM...then that's even more reason to shoot for a legit franchise QB...not settle on an average QB. A top 5 GM, a franchise QB and top tier coaching is the stuff of dynasties...or multiple rings in a 5-6 year span. Why you intentionally put yourself at a disadvantage in one area...when you have clear advantages in other areas? Just seems like you are robbing Peter to pay Paul.

I mean...is he going to just stop being a good GM or just stop adding talent to the roster because they used resources on a QB? I have always thought this "great roster vs. great QB" debate was a false choice (sort of like FA vs. the draft). Why not have both? Sure there are opportunity costs and financial logistics involved in finding and keeping a top tier QB...but a savvy GM as good as Ballard is purported to be...should be able to overcome that...especially early on in that QB's contract...and especially when he's sitting on $100M in cap space.

We all got a taste of what an improving Ballard team with a top tier QB could look like last year...that's the direction I want to see this team take.

  8. Okereke has been pretty much as advertised...good in sub packages in pass coverage...and somewhat of a liability in run defense...hence the lower number of snaps.

Comparing him to Devin Bush is a bit unfair. Bush was in the running for DROY...is on a completely different level of athleticism...and probably has All Pro upside.

But hopefully Okereke can get stronger and improve his run defense...to possibly be Leonard's 3-down running mate. I do wish the Colts had the luxury of using a pick on a stud MLB...but that's probably not going to happe anytime soon. I know people like Walker...but he's not that guy (and he's one of those guys I hope Ballard is selective about when re-signing players).

Disagree on Hurts and on Herbert. I still like Herbert a lot and wouldn't mind drafting him... but there is something about him... I cannot quite put my finger on it that bothers me. He looks a bit passive/conservative to me. He doesn't use his tools to the full extent of his abilities. It's a bit weird because Love and Herbert are often put in the same bucket as the big-arm, playmakers of the draft, but they are kind of on the opposite side of their aggression tendencies - Love is raw and wild both in positive and negative ways... he's like a wild stallion just slinging it out there without regard for consequences and Herbert is more polished and this year has been very deliberate and somewhat too conservative with his throws. I've watched most of his games this year and I cannot really think of many long passes he's completed.

About Hurts - Oklahoma is running on over 60% of their snaps. This is insane. This is Ravens-like. I don't trust Hurts as a pocket passer, I actually think he has some of the same problems that Brissett has in the pocket (slow to process, not great anticipation, dropping his eyes when leaving the pocket, etc). IMO if you draft him you need to go full Ravens mode with the run game, but I don't think he's as good and elusive of a runner as Lamar and he takes some brutal hits on his runs. I don't think he can survive for long playing like this with even bigger and faster defenders in the NFL.

Haha...you don't happen to write for the the draft network, do you...because that is an excellent description.

I agree re: Hurts. I am intrigued...but I would rather not go that route. Now if you said the Colts could get him in the 2nd round...get a legit WR1 in the 1st round...a high-end TE prospect in the 3rd round...AND get Hunter Henry in FA...I might be more open to it. Because that's basically what was able to do.

Saw you reported that prior. Were did you see the report that he didn't show up. Just curious.

I heard that as well...not sure if it was officially reported. I think he ultimately went to another game that had multiple prospects. Regardless, the Colts had a strong presence there. I am not sure what the practice is around GMs going to one individual's game. They have the tape...and a lot of the final (and official) evaluation can be done in the offseason Bowl games, Combine, interviews, visits, etc. For example, when KC was scouting Mahomes, I don't think Dorsey went to any of his games.

But I am sure Ballard is very familiar with Love at this point.

What I have seen from Holder is being fair. He routinely will talk about Jacobys bad game but he also talks about how he isn’t the only one to blame for this season. There are lots of reasons this season went south. Jacoby is just one of them. I have really been pretty disgusted with a lot of colt fans this year. There has been so many factors that have played into this losing stretch and to blame it all on the QB is just wrong.

I definitely agree with that there are lots to blame...and I am not even trying to put it on JB. I am just saying I think Holder certainly has an agenda (and/or personal biases)...and it comes through in his writing and especially in his tweets and responses...and I don't really care for him most of the time. I am sure he couldn't care less that I feel this way...it's JMO.

    Good post.

I see the WR/TE problem too, and it will take a lot of draft picks or cap money to fill all of the holes, especially when you realize that a replacement for TY will be needed soon.  That's a first round draft choice right there just to maintain the talent level we have, and we need to add to it a lot.

Hooper is the ATL TE?  I think its possible ATL blows their team up this year....will likely get a new HC....but I think Hooper is one of the fan favorites and might be a guy they want to resign.

And don't rule out the need for a RB.  Mack is pretty good, but everybody else needs upgrading.  Hines might stick as a KR/PR, but somebody more dynamic than him in the running game should be considered.  And during Philly's SB year, I think Blount was their horse.  We don't have a pounding guy like that.

Yeah...RB can be one of those 4-5 picks as well. Mack has durability issues...Wilkins is a depth RB (because it is clear they are not going to hand over the reins to him)...Williams is a FA (maybe they re-sign him...but who know)...and Hines is a decent gadget player (but he's not really a RB and he's not really a big play guy...even though you would think he should be). I could see the need for a complete RB that can compete for carries.

I think ATL is at somewhat of a crossroads. They certainly have talent...but can't seem to put it together. They just gave both Ryan and Julio big time money...so I don't know if they would be rebuilding necessarily...but retooling is definitely a possibility. If they can clear a good amount of cap space...Hooper will definitely be back.

But if ATL is truly thinking about blowing it up...I dream on the possibility of acquiring Calvin Ridley. I think he's a superstar with a QB that will get him the ball...great speed, great route running, great hands and a knack for the EZ. He would be a perfect WR1 to replace Hilton and to develop a young QB with (ala Marvin and Manning). I doubt it would ever happen...but teams have been more open to trading players than ever before...and he is going to get expensive after next season.

CB obviously decided not to offer enough to keep him, even though he was a nice fit in the year he played here.  Thus he went elsewhere

Nope...according to Holder...it's Inman's fault. I typically don't have a problem with reporters...but something about Holder just rubs me the wrong way. He unabashedly carries water for Ballard...and is typically arrogant (and sometimes abrasive) in doing so.

He also decided to become a huge JB backer. After the MIA game, he writes an article about how JB is the missing link and that we don't appreciate him enough. After the poor HOU game, he writes an article about how outside assesssment of JB (aka this forum for example) is wrong because it doesn't matter...and those who do matter...he's meeting the correct metrics. And after the bad TEN game, he finally did say criticism would be warranted for JB...but then writes an article about others are to blame as well.

Per Stephen Holder Colts indeed tried to resign him last offseason, it just didn't work. Holder ounded it was rather on Inman.

I hope we can sign him for a longer contract 1+2 year or something like that. And I also hope he won't got injured like other FAs... :-(

I can take or leave Inman (though I would have liked to have him back in that mentor role)...but I doubt it's completely on Inman that he didn't re-sign...like Holder is suggesting. We don't what they offered (and maybe without any guarantee of making the roster)...and after he came up huge for them in the last half of the previous season and playoffs...he probably wanted something a bit better because this was his last chance (which is a perfectly reasonable position).

Will be interesting to see how they approach Pascal this offseason. He's got a similar argument...though he was not quite as good as Inman...but he is much younger.

  15. 20 minutes ago, DougDew said:

The ones that are also good cost $.

They are going to have difficulty attracting those types anyways IMO...at least at WR. The FA WR group is pretty weak this year...at least with younger WRs. Basically Cooper and Robby Anderson are all that appeals to me. I doubt Cooper would come here and Anderson is a deep play WR (which the Colts currently don't utilize). The rest are older WRs...and I don't see Ballard committing money to one of those.

Would have been great to have pried away Parker in a trade...but I am sure every team is thinking that at this point. I still think trading is the way to get a WR...in addition to drafting one (possibly two). Basically, they have Hilton...who is aging and might be breaking down. Campbell...who is still an unknown. And Pascal...who is a FA.

I say give Pascal a team-friendly two-year deal...draft one early (or two if the value is there) and look at trading for a guy...maybe an upside WR who has fallen out of favor (Dante Petts) or an established WR that is nearing the end of a current contract and will need to be paid again (Keenan Allen)...or maybe one under a big contract that a team wants to get out from (Cooks). Probably will be tough to do though...so the draft is ultimately going to be critical.

I am keeping my eye on two FA TEs in Henry and Hooper. It's very unlikely they both get to FA...but I would love to have either one...and would be willing to pay top TE money. Doyle is solid as a low-end TE1 type...but he's not dynamic...and he's aging. I think a dynamic TE1 is a missing ingredient for this offense (like Ertz was for Reich in PHI). And then I would draft one in the middle rounds to develop.

I think this upcoming draft will need to be very heavy offense...with like 4-5 picks going to that side...and most of those early.

I was kind of disappointed in the article. Lots of "we like him", "he works so hard", "Tenn is so good , i know them" kind of talk without really saying anything. Ballard seems like a good man, and probably good to work for, but I would have liked to have seen something like "we need more talented skill players on offense", "special teams need to step up" kind of stuff but maybe Ballard only says those things behind closed doors.

Yeah...that was a pretty fluff interview overall. Ballard is very good at talking to the media...and very good at answering without really saying anything when he wants to. He controls the narrative...and sometimes he will be transparent...and other times not.

This past quarter of the season was mostly just bad...as they went from 5-3 to 6-6...including critical losses to divisional rivals and MIA...and very likely out of the playoffs. But I don't think it's really Ballard's style to say the those types of things.

I normally want to win only exceptions when we are in need of a QB just like now.

Yeah...I get that...and I don't think playoffs are very likely.

I remember 2015 and 2016...moral victories and winning meaningless games in Week 16 and 17 (remember the Luck fist bump after the last-second win against JAC). That's great and all...but not it was after losing critical games against HOU.

I am not an advocate of losing (unless it's incredibly advantageous)...but winning those types of games is pretty meh. They even managed to win Week 17 in 2017...when they could have had the #2 pick (we thought the NYJ deal was sweet).

Fun fact...going back to Luck's rookie season...the Colts are 7-0 in Week 17 games. We will see if that streak continues this year.

  20. Sign me up for Foles era of Colts football...especially with the Reich connection.

But I will warn you...as a fellow Wildcat...I am unashamed in my bias toward Foles. But more importantly, I also do think he has shown he can play at a very very high level football against very good teams.

I have no idea if JAC would even trade him to the Colts...or if they could make the numbers work for them...but I would be onboard...because his value is very low (so the cost should be very low)...and assuming it was just his base salary coming over.

Hell...provided the Colts would only owe Foles his base salary...I would even be willing to eat the $12.5M in dead cap for JB if I could find a good trade partner...which might not be as difficult since his salary might be pretty attractive to a rebuilding team...or to a backup-needy competitive team.

In that scenario, you buy low on Foles (with a low pick) and sell "high" on JB (for a middling pick)...and it only costs the Colts $6M more next season (than had they kept JB). So they get an upgrade and upside at QB (IMO) and maybe even an improved draft pick that they can use toward drafting a QB as well.

From the moment Reich was hired and Luck had his shoulder surgery (and his future in question)...I have thought there was a non-zero chance Foles ends up in Indy. And what looked impossible back in March (Luck coming off a CPOTY award and Foles getting a long-term in JAC)...now seems only unlikely. Will be interesting to see what happens...probably nothing...but maybe it's kismet.

At the very least, Foles makes for a better stopgap...as they develop a long-term rookie.
