I don’t think WRs are worth top 15 picks anymore. Hockenson went 8 which I think was high for a TE but the first WR didn’t come off the board until 25 with Brown to the Ravens last year. After that it was Harry at 32. Year before that I think Ridley was the first off the board at like 24. Last time receivers went top 15 we got Davis and Williams and the results have been mixed.

And if you want a hot take for the draft, I’d take Ruggs over Jeudy. Rugs is an underrated route runner, once he perfects that and adds it with his game breaking speed, he could be better than Jeudy. Lamb and Jeudy don’t really get me excited.

It's interesting...because while I do think there are WRs worth a top 15 pick...I also have longed believe that Day Two is the sweet spot...and it frustrated me that Ballard hadn't pulled the trigger until last year.

I have said this before...but I would probably draft a WR on Day Two every year until I got it right. If you looked at impact players at respective positions...I am willing to bet that WRs index much much higher than most positions for Day Two players...outside of maybe TE. Skill positions in general...are great investments on Day Two.

That said...I would be happy with Jeudy or Lamb at #13. I think both are blue chip WRs. There are certainly WRs that can live up to that billing...though not so much recently. The expectations would be sky high though.

Given how deep this draft class is...I would prefer a Day Two double-dip at the position...if they don't use one of those picks on a TE. There are only so many positions with wide open spots...and I believe WR has at least two of them.

I've been to Vegas more times then I can count, often times for shows/conventions, races, etc.  There is something major going on out there about every weekend of the year.  I was out there last year for the SHOT show which is one of the biggest draws they have each year and prices were the same as always.  Been out for Tyson fight, UFC weeknds, and Nascar races also.  Would like to go out for the first week of March Madness sometime, just haven't made it.

I have not been for March Madness...but I have heard the weekend before (conference tourneys) are a great time to go as well.

I went to the NFL Drafts  for 6 years. The Philly Draft was my last one because it was impossible to get tickets to enter the Draft even though there were a bunch of empty seats.  I went from the First pick on day 1 until the last pick.

It was a lot of fun but the NFL sells a package to the days of the draft called NFL on location and they are like $2500 a day.

I have been on the NFL Network and ESPN at the draft. I was also in the movie Draft Day.

I am dressed up in the Blue Zoot Suit and Blue Beard.

It will be really packed. Don't carry a bag into the draft. They have strict rules.

If I can answer any questions let me know.

This is the Blue Beard Facebook page I set up.

    https://www.facebook.com/pg/ColtsBlueBeard/about/

The Nashville draft was free...so I would assume Vegas will be...especially with it being on the strip.

If it’s anything like Nashville...there will be a virtual waiting room that opens when the gates open for the Draft Experience that day (typically around noon). You have to be in the area to enter on the app...and do it immediately. My brother-in-law somehow got #15 the first day. A set number of people will be allowed into the front section to watch...behind the Super fans and media.

I am very intrigued to see how Vegas does this. It’s going to be incredibly crowded.

I won tickets to the draft both years it was in Chicago.   Sat three rows from the stage the first year

Nice...I had a buddy (Bengals fan) that won as well. I should have gone when it was on Chitown those two years. Nashville was the first...and won’t be the last.

It’s such an amazing event for anybody who is a fan of the NFL.

Booked my flight and room in Vegas for the NFL Draft!!   Just wanted to let you all know the Colts will be represented there in the crowd.

I know it is new in Vegas but has anyone been to the draft before?

I am working on my plans this weekend. Went to Nashville last year and it was a blast. Trying to make it an annual pilgrimage.

  6. There could be some parallels between SF and IND...and perhaps some lessons. (Look at who started that following season for SF).

SF needed a franchise QB back in 2017. But even though SF ultimately had the #3 pick...they passed on drafting a QB like Mahomes or Watson. Instead, they grabbed a developmental QB prospect in the 3rd round. They then used that pick on a "blue chip" DL player.

Fortunately...they were able to trade for Jimmy G that following season. Maybe they knew they would eventually land Jimmy G...or could get Cousins the following year in FA...but it was risky to pass on drafting a QB.

The Colts need a franchise QB. They don't have the #3 pick...but they are in a position to realistically to get one of the top 3-4 guys. And this is where the Colts are faced with a similar choice. Do they grab their guy at #13 (or perhaps move up a few spots)...or do they pass on drafting a QB early like SF did...and grab a developmental QB in rounds 2-3...while working toward a more proven option...perhaps a Derek Carr trade.

IMO...they are drafting somebody...either as the long-term franchise QB, the developmental backup for the foreseeable future (even if they do manage to get a proven upgrade prior to the draft) OR as a hedge for a future move.

It worked out for SF in the end...but Beathard got beat out by an UDFA and Thomas has been a disappointment.

Going to be very interesting to see how Ballard plays this. I know what I would do...but that's about it.

Randy Moss' son (I think Thad is his first name) announced an early entry into the NFL Draft.

Hard to really judge how good he was because he had such a good team at LSU, the best QB in NCAA, the best WR corps in the NCAA, etc...  but from the bit I got to watch him in the college football playoffs/national final, he looks very athletic, comes from a good pedigree and seems to be a better teammate than his dad.

A few other guys we have a shot at in rounds 2-3 (or 3-4):

Albert Okwuegbunam - Mizzou - 6'5" 255 lbs.  Runs in the 4.6 forty range.  Had 43 receptions in 2018-19 and digressed to 26 receptions this past year (could be a good thing, may drop his stock, though I think he's still got stud potential).

Jared Pinckey - Vanderbilt -- 6'4" 260 lbs.. a 4.7 guy, had 50+ receptions as a junior, missed time as as senior and had 20 receptions in 7+ games.  Would be nice if he was slightly faster, but guy is a player and will likely be available in the mid rounds.

Colby Parkinson - Standford - 6'7" 251 lbs.  Had 48 receptions last year.  Physical freak with some rawness to his game.

There are another 5-6 guys who look like they can produce in the NFL and will be available in the mid-rounds.

I think we're certainly going to address TE this offseason (especially if we let Ebron walk).  It's probably a good offseason to do so as the draft looks pretty solid at TE and there is possibility of 2-3 FAs being available.

Pinkney is very interesting. He was rated really high after his junior season.

Hopkins is probably the prize, but I think he sneaks into the 1st round if he tests well.

I like Breeland as a late Day Two guy...and I love a dice roll on Calcaterra from OU (if he can bulk up).

Ballard didn't draft that TE from Alabama we had but he was grooming him for the future till he was taken off of wavers

Hentges wasn't really much of a dynamic TE though. I think they saw him as more of a Doyle type.

  9. I hope that Hunter Henry (or Austin Hooper) hits FA. Henry is a perfect fit...and would compliment Doyle nicely. If that doesn't happen...then I agree that that they should be looking to the draft for a TE.

It's interesting that Ballard...who came from a team that drafted and developed a 3rd round TE that changed the team's entire offense...has yet to draft a TE out of 29 picks (20 of which occurred in rounds 2-5). Granted Ballard wasn't actually with the team when they scouted and drafted Kelce...but he saw firsthand the impact that he had.

I really thought that drafting a TE would be one of his first moves...and Kittle always just struck me as a guy he would go after...but then he didn't.

IF the Colts can't get one of the top FAs...I think we just might see Ballard pull the trigger on TE prospects the next couple of drafts to build up the group.

I think all you have to do to realize that things have been mediocre to bad, barring Lucks 18' rebound/goodbye season is to look at this teams record over the last 5 years.

I'm not sure what's really going on at this point with respects to a rebuild, it's like a house that was close to finished and then the roof got blown off, after dealing with floods.

Yeah...and when Luck wasn't playing well...they were 1-5 to start the season. So outside of that 10-1 stretch when Luck started playing like an MVP again (and the team gelled a bit)...the overall record has been something like 12-27 over the past three years...and even with that stretch...it's still just 22-28...which is a 7 win team on average.

The roster has definitely gotten better though...but they still need talent at a few position and they REALLY need a good QB to make the passing game work again.

It was definitely nice to have those pieces, while inheriting a 2-14 team with no QB.

However, Lynch has whiffed on a couple high selections (R. Foster, S. Thomas), but brought in via trade or FA some good players to say the least.

Impressive going from 2-14 to SB in 3 years IMO.

Yeah...2017 was his first draft...and he whiffed on his first two picks. Still pretty crazy that they passed on QB in that situation with a new offensive-minded HC (could have had Mahomes or Watson)...but I think Jimmy G was always the target...and it was just a matter of time before NE would trade him.

But overall, he has done a fantastic job...and Shanahan is a great HC.

I don't like the spot, but Gross-Matos fits to a tee the profile of defenders Ballard likes - size, LENGHT for days, explosiveness... I think he would be great pick if we decide to trade down and pick up ammunition for next year's draft.

I don't the like the spot either. It's way early in the process...but I think he's a guy that will go late 1st and possibly even in the 2nd round. The Colts are in a position to either get the QB they want OR a blue chip prospect at another position.

What a horrible first round pick. DE is no where near our biggest need, and not only that, but this would be a huge reach. Matos is very raw and could easily be had in the mid 2nd round.

Indy needs to go DT, WR, or QB round 1. Possibly LT if Costanzo were to retire.

FA appears to be the route for DE...as it could very likely have a few proven legit options.

I wouldn't put DE near the top of needs...but it does have long-term question marks. How long can Houston play at this level...is Sheard worth retaining...can Turay stay injury-free and continue to progress.

I think they definitely look at adding a legit DE if one is available in FA.

True but Hilton is getting older and banged up on the regular of late. As much as I hate to say it Chris May need to double dip on receivers this draft.

Don't hate it...embrace it. This is a loaded class...and being able to get TWO of them is better than one.

    What a joke

Nothing against Jack...it's not in his control...but you are correct.

How does Darren Waller...who was second in receiving yards amongst TEs...not get a nod? Maybe there's an injury or surgery he had after the season.

But if not Waller...then it should be Hunter Henry (man I hope he hits FA this offseason). Then you have a guy like Gesicki.

Oh well...hopefully Doyle has some incentives in his contract for getting this nod.

I think many have forgotten the other DF ( D. Fountain). I am not sure where PC is going to finally land for this offense but I definitely don’t see this team (nor do I see Funch wanting to come back here) giving Funch 10 mil/yr again when we have such the ?? at QB currently. I think you’re right though with TY, PC and Pascal but let’s not forget to add in Fountain and then they were extremely high on Ashton Dulin and then Frank loves Marcus Johnson. Unless there is a guy who falls to us in the 3rd round, I can’t see why this team would ignore the trench spots first or the QB spot if CB’s guy falls in his lap. I just feel like this team is pretty well enough set at the wr spot for the 2020 season under our currently structured team. If we had Luck suited up for 2020, I’d be fine acquiring that star wr in the first and DT next.

Yeah...guys like DF, Johnson and Duhlin would round out the vet competition for next year...battling for 1-2 spots (depending on injuries). I just think this draft class is loaded with WR talent...and the Colts should be looking at grabbing two of them.

  17. 2 hours ago, BProland85 said:

Why on earth would Ballard spend another 10 mil on Funchess when he got nothing out of him this past season? Injury or not that would be just stupid.

And instead of paying Hilton that much over 4 years, Ballard would be wise to keep in mind his age.

And Indy has to find impact players at DT and possibly OT.

Yeah...I hope Funchess and the Colts both move on.

Giving TY a 4-year deal seems very optimistic...but attaching that much gtd money to it makes it risky. He will be 31 when he starts his next deal...and he has had to play through injuries the past couple of years. It's going to be interesting to see how he approaches his future...not just how the Colts approach it. I could see him sticking around for a year or two...and then retiring.

Misleading stat bout our run D. Teams just passed so effortlessly against the pass D, they didn't have run all that much

It is somewhat misleading. I think DVOA is probably a better way to rank...and the Colts were in the bottom half of the league (#20). Look at BAL as well...they were top 10 in rushing yard/s game...but #19 in run defense DVOA...because they were up big a lot and teams would abandon the run.
