First,  even if I accept your view,  I'm not sure I feel any better.    A 16% drop rate is staggering.

If all of that goes to concentration, then it's still a major problem.

As for your view,  how does on know how much to blame on concentration and how much to blame on hands?

I double checked the Lance Zierlein profile...    and it did talk about concentration issues.   And it also talked about him being a body catcher.    Body catchers scare me.   They're not trusting their hands.

His raw tools are dazzling.   It's what attracted me in the first place.    But that drop rate is eye popping and not in a good way.....

    Always appreciate your view.

I blame it more on concentration because he makes quite a bit great catches as well, contested and uncontested. He's one of the best contested guys at this draft. He does use his body to catch the ball a bit too much but he can do it with just his hands and I personally wouldn't classify him as a body catcher. Anyway body catchers don't bother me as much as others as long as that's not the only way they can catch the ball. Antonio Brown uses his body a lot to secure the ball. As long as you catch it, I don't care how you do it.

His drop rate is terrible and he has lot of bad drops on the film but otherwise his tape is mostly pretty good and he has great traits. Brandon Marshall, Mike Evans, Crabtree etc. struggled with drops too but have combined those with great catches as well. They don't/didn't have bad hands. But I think it's more mental/lack of experience/technique related and can be improved. (Naturally) Bad hands are something that's really hard to improve. I agree with you there, those guys are no-drafts for me, especially in the early rounds. I don't think that's the case here though.

While it shouldn't directly contribute to drops and isn't really an excuse, he also suffered from bad QB play. Per PFF of his 1318 rec Yards, 1072 were on throws farther than 10 yards. And 301 of them were YAC. I think his big play threat ability easily neutralizes the drops he had (11 on 71 catchable targets).

For what little it’s worth...   I’ve removed two wide receivers completely from my board.   And I’ve liked both of them for months.

First is Butler.   I love the body, the speed, the arms and hand size...   but the BIG FLAW is catching ability.

Saw an article a few days ago about Boom or Bust players...  under Butler it said his “drop” rate was.... (drum roll...) over 16 percent!  That’s one out if every six passes.   That’s possibly worse than Darrius Hayward-Bay.

Hands can be improved a modest amount, but when they’re this bad,  it’s an ez no thanks for me.

His hands aren't bad. Concentration issue, yes. Hands issue, no.

I'd like to know what's up with the KC front office.  A great pass rush but they let both Houston and Dee Ford leave.  They must have somebody on the roster to take one of those spots or they are telegraphing their draft plans pretty badly.

They are saving cap space for the future.

    Thanks....   good info.

Makes me wonder if Grier has a connection to Parcels who is a huge fan of JB?

Just thinking out loud.      Appreciate the good 411.

He was a scout with the Pats 95-96 when Parcells was the HC. Hard to tell from that what kind of connection they have or how strong it is.

Both Miami's HC and GM came from New England where Brissett started his NFL career.

Also,  and perhaps importantly,  JB comes with a very big endorsement from Bill Parcels,  who was coached both NE and Miami in his career and is a big fan of JB.    All those are the connections you're talking about.

Fins GM (Chris Grier) did come from NE but that was almost 20 years ago, pre-Belichick.

There are connections though, no doubt.

3a) A lot of noise was made about Kirk Cousins' fully guaranteed contract. Three years, $84m, guaranteed at signing. Excellent. But it wasn't a drastic departure from how franchise level NFL QBs usually get paid. Three years ago, Andrew Luck signed a contract that fully guaranteed only $44m at signing, but effectively guaranteed him $75m over three years. The primary difference was the schedule on which money was guaranteed, but in practice, it would have been prohibitively expensive for the Colts to try to terminate that contract within the first three years. Last year, Alex Smith signed a contract that fully guaranteed only $55m at signing, but effectively guaranteed $71m over three years.

3b) And that's typical, not just for QBs, but for any franchise level player. (Khalil Mack's contract effectively guarantees $90m over four years.) Even though the full guarantee differs from the effective guarantee, the money is still virtually certain to be paid. So, in practice, Kirk Cousins getting three years fully guaranteed isn't anything out of the ordinary, except for the fact that it was fully guaranteed at signing.

Great post and Cousins contract wasn't drastic departure in terms of guarantees but the length was drastic (no team friendly years). He can hit the market again in 3 years (2 right now) and maximize his earnings. He also had no transition tag clause and no trade clause. Most player friendly deal ever. The benefits of being starting QB in FA.

OP brought up Revis and Revis singed all kinds of deals to maximize his earnings. 1 year deal with a team option for another (Pats). Long, guaranteed rookie deal which he held out and which are possible no longer (Jets). Long-term deal which was essentially 1 year deal (Bucs). Then the traditional long-term deal with couple of years guaranteed and few more non-guaranteed (Jets again).

In the interest of fairness I’m not sure any GM has signed anyone to a 2-year fully guaranteed contract.   It just isn’t done.   I think the Cousins deal was the first multiyear fully guaranteed deal.

If im wrong I’m sure someone will come along and correct me.    As for the three top players you mentioned...  we definitely offered big, big money including plenty of guaranteed money. It just wasn’t enough.   That’s Ballard’s discipline on full display...

I meant that 2 years of the long-term deal were guaranteed. The actual contract length would be longer and have non-guaranteed years. Cousins is the only one who got his whole contract guaranteed on multi-year deal, yes.

I was interested in Tate at 2-years...  maybe 3, but that would be the Max.  At 4-years I’d be out of the discussion.   Especially at nearly 60 percent guaranteed!    Yikes!

It's really just a 2 yr deal, both at 11.5M per.

Longer term if it doesn't come with guaranteed money (for the team, worse for the player).

It's part of the mix.  Talent alone isn't any guarantee either.  What is the Steelers record vs the Patriots in the last 5 games where Ben, Brown, and Bell all played together?  0 wins, 5 losses.

It's actually 0 wins, 1 loss. Regular season game on Bell's rookie year. At least one of those players was missing in other meetings or got hurt very early in the game.

If the browns don’t win a SB in the next few years their spending spree will kill that team. They are clearly in the win or know mind set.

How? They have Mayfield on cheap contract for 4 more years. They still have about 50M in cap space.

Rams are the team that has been going all in, trading far more picks while having far less assets to being with and less cap space too.

The Chemistry thing is why I don't usually drool over super productive guys who are a locker room cancer often from a losing team who's locker room has imploded.

    Antonio Brown

    OBJ

    Bell

It's basically like giving them 18 million dollars to divide your locker room.

There is a reason that the Giants are getting rid of a super star player in the prime of his career!!!!  But fans can't see that, they can only see all the stats he puts up.

Brown very well could be  locker room cancer. Not sure about Bell.

OBJ seems like the opposite if we believe Geoff Schwartz and Dan Duggan (Giants beat writer) at least. They say he was loved in the locker room.

Joke of a contract. Good for him but bad for business. Prime example of why I like a Ballard’s approach. They just signed him and Barr for a lot of money. Still have needs at other positions and are talking about trading previous top picks in Lee. You spend to much and lose guys you spent high picks on. Terrible for longevity.

Their GM is probably standing on thin ice. He doesn't care much about longevity or losing players in few years. He's gotta win now.

All I have to say, which is the same every year around this time, The Colts need Corner back help and its not even close. When was the last time this team had a very good CB (Vonte Davis)? You see my point? We need CB like now. I believe Rolby is available from Denver. He has always been solid.

As far as Safety, Eric Weddle signed for 2yr/$10.5M , If not Weddle at least target Joyner before all the "good" DBs are gone. Im not saying spend $100M on one guy but come on, we need potential starters at this point and Greenbay Packers just landed a tri factor (Preston Smith, Adrian Amos, Za'Darius Smith)

Roby is going to the Texans, Joyner to the Raiders.
