  1. I know this isn't the point of the thread, but I think the whole debate was made up to build more anticipation.  I remember when they asked Peyton how long he knew he would be the #1 pick, he said "I can keep a secret too".    It was a no brainer.  Just as I don't think there was much doubt Luck over RGIII despite the media's love affair.

Anyways, had we drafted Leaf, we might be talking about he LA Colts right now.

  2. Before somebody like Brad Wells blows this up, it is thought to be just a blister.

@TribStarTJames: Allen, by the way, left practice and had some treatment in the trainers tent. The injury didnt look to be serious. Thought to be a blister.

Good thing you note that up front.   Brad Wells would have turned this into some kind of Bill Polian mistake even though he was gone before he was drafted.  Or how Grigson only picks injury plagued guys.

  3. I think RGIII suffers from the same things Tebow does which is over exposure. RGIII seems like a decent guy.  But it almost seems like there is a mandate that EVERYONE has to make him out to be the next great thing.

Well, I take that back. RGIII goes along with it, having press conferences, advertisements, etc.

I look forward to this season when the read option is offset and running QBs like that are taken out.  Annoys me.  I enjoy a good passer. I couldn't care less if a QB is a great running QB too.

  4. I honestly believe teams can have a very strong defense. The days of the 85 Bears are probably over.  But I would disagree on simply outscoring everyone.  Look at what Baltimore did to NE in the playoffs last year.  They basically shot down their offense a good part of the game. That is what we have to get to.   So I am for more balanced.  I know people often scream that we shouldn't run and the highest scoring teams win the titles, but that is not really true.  It still comes down to the team that can run effectively and stop the run effectively is most often the team that wins.

  5. I have a friend who is a Colts fan.  He found out he has Leukemia.   They gave me a 20% chance of survival.   He always wanted to be on the Colts for just one day.  Obviously, not going to happen.  But I wanted to get him a uniform so he could know what it would feel like to be a Colt.  That is why I wanted it.  I got him a Andrew Luck jersey.  I got a helmet.  It is those pants I can't find.

  6. Does anyone know where I could buy a full Colts uniform?  I have a few jerseys. But what I need is a real helmet and the Colts pant. I have searched the internet and can never find the white pants with the dual blue stripe.   For adult.

  7. I tend to be on the optimistic side.  But it is not blind.   I not only look at what we have done, but I look at the competition.   As Baltimore showed last year, there wasn't a big gap between the lower playoff teams and the best.  It is not like we have the 1988 49ers trashing people.   We are potentially as good as any team in the NFL.

Do you guys seem a team out there that we simply cannot compete with on paper?  And how did the Ravens do it?  They weren't that great of a team?  And why don't we have just as good of a chance to do the same?

  8. Not! I love the excitement some posters here have towards the team. This is what fans do, especially diehard fans. Talking about the super bowl, a great regular season, and other things that have not happened yet is OK.

I get a kick out of those that say they are being "realistic" and taking a wait and see approach. Why? I have a feeling that they are so afraid of a let down, that they will purposely think of the worst that can happen. (in effect "protecting" themselves) Then if they actually do better than they predicted, they will be OK with it. I say bah humbug! What's the worst that can happen if I think  (and expect) them to do well and get to the super bowl? If they don't make it, oh well. It's not like my world will be shattered and I'll kill myself.

We're supposed to have fun with this and maybe not take it so seriously. But others will downplay everything they can just to make a point. Where's the fun in that? I applaud those with unbridled enthusiasm, as you are the people who will enjoy the ride the most. I feel sorry for the others.

I couldn't agree more or written it better.   I get so tired of every time I say something optimistic, someone says "But we don't know that yet. The season hasn't started yet". DUH!  That is the whole part of speculating!  I think everyone knows the season has started yet.  Or that nothing is guaranteed.

But I, for one, thought we could compete and possible beat the Ravens last year in the playoffs.  Didn't work out that way, but I feel strongly that with the new players added and running Peps offense, we will be good enough to where we have a chance of winning the SB.

  9. I think is it absurd to consider Peyton Manning overrated.   I think too much is made out of who wins Super Bowls.   The Patriots won 3 Super Bowls early on in Tom Brady's career.  A big part of that was because their defense was so tough.   Since then, what has he won?  Don't you think cards have to fall correctly?  I personally would rate Dan Marino over John Elway. If Marino had the running attack Elway had the last two years, he would have won those Super Bowls too.

Peyton Manning is one of the greatest QBs of all time.  He can't be blamed for week coaching, often times no running attack, and no running defense.

  10. I do wonder about the term of overrated/underrated.  For example, is Jeff George really overrated? I don't know that anyone on here ever rated him that high!   Or are we talking about coming out of college.

If we are going by players that are rated highly, but we feel shouldn't be rated that high, my list would be:

    1) Jeff Saturday -  He was good for a few years, but was never as great as how he was perceived.  Too often I saw him get knocked into the backfield.  Thanks to Peyton Manning, he made every lineman look better than they were.

    2) Dallas Clark - Good player but maybe not a premier tight end as how he was perceived for awhile.  When Jacob Tamme replaced him and put up similar numbers, it made you wonder if it were Clark or the system.

    3) Edgerran James - I will probably get pounded on this one.  I thought James was a very good back.   But what always bothered me about him was he always got his yardage in the second half once we were ahead.   I would rarely seem him dominate a first half.  And he too often disappeared in the playoffs.  I don't think he was GREAT like some fans would put him.  But just my opinion. I could be 100% wrong.

    4) Cato June - Pro Bowl for being in the right place early in the season, but was never anything else before or after?

    Underrated

    1) Ryan Diem - He tailed off the last few years, but he was a pretty good right tackle.  Classic road grader.  I don't think he was ever appreciated until it was obvious he lost it.

    2) Bert Jones - For a short while, the best QB in the NFL.  His 1976 season is considered one of the best of all time.  He is often forgotten about because of injuries.  But then again, Gale Sayers didn't play long and was always remembered.

    3) Tom Matte - Jack of all trades.   He was a good runner, receiver, blocker, and could even play QB.  But when you talk about great Colt RBs, he is never mentioned

    4) Bill yBrooks -  It is astounding the numbers this guy put up with horrid QB play.  Had he played with Peyton Manning, I believe he would have had near Marvin Harrison numbers.

  11. You start a thread saying Super Bowl Champs before training camp - I reply that its too early for Super Bowl talk & give my reasons why I believe its too early - just like you would give ur reasons why you think we will be Super Bowl Champs.

Where Im from that is called a discussion. Where you are getting Im saying nothing should be discussed is beyond my level of understanding.

I have speculated on the future several times - i have given my opinion on players several times - I just tried to respectfully say that I would love to get into how I think we can & will have a better season this year - but its just too early. You telling me if R Wayne goes down for the year in training camp this thread will still remain relevent? Im just saying its hard to discuss what can happen at the end of a season that has not even started yet.

Ill make my point a different way. What if I started a thread that said "Why we need to resign Bjoern Werner." Yes - we can discuss it - but we would be missing a pretty important piece of the equation. Not only has his career not started yet - has he even signed yet?. Even if he has signed I believe my point is made. Right now - discussing his next contract would be pointless.

Thanks - Ill try to be clearer next time.

I see your point and I appreciate and respect your opinion.    My point is I think we all know it is impossible to predict the future, much less a season.  Nothing has happened.  Luck could blow out a leg tomorrow working out.   So, in my opinion, that is basically an unsaid part of these forums. It is all speculation and opinions.   If you look over most posts, they are speculating. And even if I made the prediction in Week 15, Luck could blow out his knee in week 16 and that makes it invalid.   That is understood.   Just like if I went to see Spiderman, I wouldn't need someone to tell me "Hey, you know, there isn't really a Spiderman!".

So I guess what I was hoping for when I start something like this, is someone speculating why that won't happen.  Bad defense.  Luck regresses.  But again, it is all speculative.

  12. Often times in the Free Agency NFL, teams sneak up you don't expect.  The Giant teams that beat the Patriots were very uneven teams.   I remember thinking last year I was glad the Colts got the Ravens in the playoffs because I felt like the Ravens were the most beatable AFC team.   They go on and win the Super Bowl!

We have the horses in place.  We have the play makers.  We have the franchise QB.

    So you never know....

  13. Weird topic - a forum for Colts fans to beat on their chests a little i guess huh.

Well - unfortunately for the OP & those that agree with him - this isnt basketball. The Super Bowl cannot be won in June.

Winning it all is only about 1) making the playoffs  & 2) going into the playoffs firing on all cylinders.

All playoff seeds have won it all before so winning division - record - offensive/defensive rank - coach - & depth at FB position doesnt matter.

That & injuries make it impossible to predict a season.

I think alot of our anxiety about how good we can be comes from knowing how bad we could be right now. Its like we were the best team for 10 years then all of a sudden had the perfect bad season to draft the QB that will give us another 10 years. Luck or not - it could have been alot worse. KC couldnt even find a QB in the draft.

Accept who we are - its OK - we are the best young contender. We are moving towards our 5 year window of opportunity while todays contenters are spending theirs up. Relax - our future is bright.

Why discuss anything then?  Because 99% of what goes on in the forum is either speculating the future or giving an opinion on players. But none is concrete.  So I am speculating that I think the Colts will win the Super Bowl.   That's what this forum is for!

  14. I have been a Colts fan since 1975.   I admit that the journey seems to be more exciting when the expectations are lower.  In the Manning era, for the most part, I expected to win almost every game.   It was a matter of how many games over 10 we would win a year.  And that was a great luxury I probably took for granted.   The most exciting for me has been when it was not expected.   Joe Thomas rebuilding the Colts and the Bert Jones lead Colts turning around and winning the AFC East. Jack Trudeau and Erik Dickerson leading the Colts to the playoffs against the Browns in the late 80s.   The magical 1995 season.   1999 when the Colts went from 3-13 in 1998 to 13-3 in 1999.  And last season was amazing to me.   Because each week you never knew if we would win or not.

The Manning Colts were much like watching Mike Tyson in his prime.  They were going to win.  It was just a matter of by how much.

I do believe we underachieving during the Manning years.   Always seemed rusty and unprepared in the playoffs.

  15. I guess I look at it like this.We played the Super Bowl champions in the playoffs and the score didn't reflect the game.   We couldn't score in the red zone or stop the bombs to Boldin.   But I believe we are a MUCH better team this year.    And we have remedied those things.   Arians offense is good for long, exciting plays, but not so good inside the red zone.    Hamilton will bring a more efficient offense that should be more effective in the red zone.   Secondly, adding Toler and Laundry should make for a much improved secondary.

So I stand by it. The Colts will shock the world and win the Super Bowl. This is not a team of 8 great players and 45 fillers. This is a solid team at all positions that will work together.
