  1. I trust that Pagano knows what he is doin when it comes to the D.

Agree, I trust Chuck and think he will be creative. I can't say I know exactly how the Colts will create a hybrid D that starts with a 3-4 but does some other things but think they will be original in how they implement their 3-4.

  2. I love it! Failed DB from what I remember. QB to DB.

Rex was a great player at Ohio State Started as a sophmore at QB, won a national championship, could run and was a very accurate passer, hardnosed, sturdy......drafted in the 10th round but I thought what a steal he got to be able to do something. He was the worst CB I ever saw and was quickly switched to safety because he was so bad (but no better there). In Rex's defense, he joined the Colts when Joe Thomas was cleaning house and he played for bad teams but seeing Rex play safety after watching 5/6 years of Rick Volk and Jerry Logan (2 top flight Colt safeties) was just too much for me at the time. We then made the same exact mistake with Jack Mildren (Oklahoma wishbone QB).

  3. I would love to say yes and I'm an optimist but......I think we'll miss the playoffs. I do think we'll have a pretty decent d that will only get better and better but I don't think the running game will be good enough out of the gate and I think with our history of injuries we will not be able to afford more than 1 starter to go down in any group (OL, DL, LBs, WRs, etc) or we'll miss the playoffs. Since every year we lose multiple starters on some part of the team I think that will not change. Look out in a few years. I think we will eventually have our best D since the 1970 Colts.

  4. Keep Freeney even if that means into the season at some point a team will be willing to deal for him AND (it's a big and) I don't care what defense you play, when down and distance dictates pass rush, nobody is better than Freeney and on those downs where the other team has to pass you can line up Freeney at any down lineman position and he WILL bring the heat.

  5. Unique hybrid player able to dominate mush larger OT's with a blend of speed, strength, quickness, and a non-stop motor from a regular 4-3 DE position. I believe that the Colts kept him because they are betting that he will be an even better player in a 3-4 as a stand up pass rusher or a hybrid defense that uses both 3-4 and 4-3 sets. Furthermore, Mathis is sturdy and has a least 4 years of tread on the tires, he plays extremely hard on every down and never gives up, great attitude and team leader as well as a good citizen. Finally, not specifically related to Robert, I think the Colts will rebuild from the defensive side first and i doubt they will give up any of their good players on defense (Powers, Angerer, Conner, etc,) with exception of maybe Freeney but simply because the Volts believe he doesn't fit well into a 3-4 system. A year down the line Mathis will still command market value if they decide to trade him.

  6. The similarities are eery between what happened after the 72 season and now.Irsay Sr. hired Joe Thomas as soon as he got the team and boy did he clean house.First it was Unitas, who was about done,to the Chargers. The fans were irate. Then it was Matte, and the rest of the aging veterans on the team. They then drafted Bert Jones high in the draft.Got Lydell Mitchell, and a lot of other pretty good young players(Carr,Doughty,Kunz,etc.).They stunk for a couple years but eventually they won 3 straight divisions.Unfortunately that was the era where th AFC was awesome with the Steel Curtain and the Raiders of Stabler, etc. Then Jones started getting hurt and they spiraled into oblivion and the result was the Baltimore fans stopped showing up and they moved to Indy. The Unitas Jones and now probably Manning Luck connections as well as the dismantling of the team are eerily similar.

When Mr. Thomas was finished with the Colts he went to the Niners and one of the first things he did (besides housecleaning the roster) was get rid of film and other reminders of the "old" Niners whom he considered losers. John Brodie is on the record regarding what the old Niner players thought of Mr. Thomas who attempted to eradicate some of the history of those early SF teams (not great teams but many great players). Let's hope Mr. Grigson has more sense and class, Thomas had none.

  7. Yeah thats what has me excited about bring Mathis back. I think he could end up being better at 3-4 OLB than DE. He has very good athletism and speed to get to the QB from the LB spot.

I forgot to say how impressed I was every time RM spoke this last year with him not accepting defeat....this guy wants to win...so if he stayed he believes that he can excel in the new system and he believes that we will eventually win again (I don't think Reggie thinks we will win again). I heard that same confidence from Gary Bracket after Mannings press conference.

  8. Build on the defensive side of the ball first. Spend 2-3 years overhauling both the system and talent. Then, In 2-3 years as Luck begins to peak, flood the offensive side of the ball with talent in a push to create a Super Bowl type team. In fact, I think that is exactly what this new management cast is set up to do. The old model for the Colts is over there in the trash can. Will a new model work?

  9. The Colts are the only team in the NFL using the model they established with Peyton. Peyton takes all the reps in practice, Peyton runs and controls the practices, Peyton essentially calls all the plays. The Colts will not plug Luck into that kind of a system and the Colts going forward will be built in a very different way (we know that from the new management that has been hired). The blackboard has been completely erased. Peyton needs an offense that can be turned over to him and that he can make better very quickly (he could do that easily with the Jets). No matter what their hearts say, peyton is not a fit for the Colts anymore.

  10. Some day Peyton will come home to guide the Colts to more victories (just not as our QB) and his heart will still be here. I'll keep thinking it and saying it until it happens.

  11. If it's a tear down (no Manning no Reggie/Robert/Gary/Ryan/Saturday/Etc.) 3 years and then they need a playoff in the 4th year. If there are significant resigns and FA's for next year with a healthy Peyton under center then all bets are off and they best play well or media/fans and owner will be unhappy and loud in their complaints.

  12. Freeney has played his position exactly as he has been asked to do it since coming to the Colts. If the demands change and he is asked to play his position differently he can and will do it. Look at Freeney's workouts on youtube and then tell me this guy has been successful just because he happened to have the skill set needed to be a pass rushing DE in a 4-3. No, I'm sorry, this guy works really hard and developed the necessary skill set to dominate as a pass rush first DE. There is no evidence.....ZERO..... that he can't do something else.....he is a stud athlete and has the desire and the attitude. I don't believe it's a valid argument to say he's only able to rush the passer and create pressure and nothing else when he's never been ask to be a run stopper. Finally he only plays 60-70% of the downs now so the idea that he couldn't have a role in a different scheme is nonsense.

  13. Are there Colt fans on this forum that are not "true" Colt fans? Anyway, I also love Peyton and believe but for him Indy would still not be a football "town" (perhaps the Colts would not even be in Indy). We (Colts organization and fans) owe Peyton and although Peyton has been properly compensated ($) for his play, we can never really repay him for what he did to turn the Indianapolis Colts from a complete "sad sack NFL joke" (Peyton's words were a circled win on the schedule for other teams) into the team resembling the team they once were as the truly great Baltimore Colts. I feel sorry for those fans who believe this is just "business" and Peyton got paid and we owe him nothing more....they miss the meaning behind why the games are played and why we should watch and care. There is a phrase "a pro's pro" well Peyton is the gold standard on that and he is proving that once again with both his attitude on his injury and his attitude about the resulting chaos of 2-14.

  14. Your NFL career is a marathon not a sprint, you're going to play thousands of snaps for the Colts, you'll be the center piece of our team, we're going to treat you just like we did Peyton and the team will be built completely around you. There is no other team where you'll have as much control/input/support as a QB as you will here in Indy (the history of the last 15 years with Peyton proves that point) and finally when you get to the end of your career we'll give you the respect you deserve just as we are doing now with Peyton.

  15. Sometimes the simple answer is the best. Based on the assumption that Gonzo will not get any significant offers and can be resigned for or near vet minimum and I think that is a fair assumption I would get Gonzo to work with Peyton as part of rehab for Peyton (something that I believe has already happened) and when it came time to make the decision I would rest my decision on what ever Peyton said about Gonzo's ability to play at a high level and help the team. If Peyton had confidence in Gonzo I would and if not I would not. Is this a conventional strategy or practice.....No.....but the situation with Peyton is not conventional and if anyone can really know if Gonzo has something left it is Peyton.
