  1. This was a REDEMPTION game.

People were saying our defense was horrible, we smacked the best offense in the league in the mouth.

People were saying Vinny is done, he was perfect.

People were saying Quincy Wilson was a bust, he was all over Kelce.

People said our DLine was awful and couldn't sack anyone and that Houston was washed up, he sacks Mahomes and gets the 4th down stop.

Nobody thought we would beat KC.

    19-13 BABY!

That’s your opinion. Not everyone has to be the sunshine and lollipops fan

Which fan do you think the team appreciates more?

The pessimistic one that is ready to fire and replace everyone after one bad game,

OR the optimistic fan that supports the team during the good times AND the bad?

    I don't remember that...

    Can you provide a link?

C'mon with the 8 team playoff.

    Agreed!

The NFL has a 12-team playoff and there are only 32 teams in the league.

How are you only gonna have 4 teams in the playoffs when there are 100+ fanbases that want a piece of the action?!?  (That being said, I can't really complain.  ND will probably get in again if their only loss is to Georgia by one score)

Chances are it will be another fragile player from Ohio State.

This from the guy that made a thread trying to say Ballard has only hit on 1 of 3 drafts...   Do you have a problem with Ballard, OSU, or both?

Is there a college that's producing non-fragile players?  All players from all schools deal with injuries at various points of their career.  One of the knocks on Bama players is how used up they are by the time they get to the NFL... and Bama and Clemson are probably the only two programs that can claim they're producing more NFL talent than OSU right now.

    Silly.

#49 - 1972 Jets at Colts  -  Shootout between Namath and Unitas.  I wasn't alive yet, so I can't really say anything about this game.  :dunno:

#28 - 1977 - Raiders at Colts AFC Divisional  -  John Madden and Kenny Stabler win in 2OT 37-31.  Again, I wasn't alive yet, so I can't say much about this one.  Cool name though: Ghost To The Post.

#21 - 2006 Patriots at Colts AFCCG  -  The two best QBs in the game.  Colts down 21-3 and make an epic comeback to win 38-34.  Three linemen score TDs.  Prayers answered.  "Exorcising demons everywhere".  Dungy and Manning finally shake off the moniker that they can't win a big game, in epic fashion against their nemesis: the Belichick/Brady Pats.  (I couldn't believe how low this game was ranked, but then I saw the games ranked ahead of it, and thought 'ok, fine'...)

#6 - 1968 Jets at Colts Super Bowl  -  The cocky AFL underdog Guarantees the Jets will beat the Colts.  The Colts throw too many interceptions and lose 16-7.

#1 - 1958 Colts at Giants NFL Championship  -  "The Greatest Game Ever Played"  Nuff Said.

Well, that's 10 of the top 100 games in NFL history that the Colts were involved in, and being #1 is pretty cool.  We are tied with the Pats for 4th most appearances in the top 100 games.

    49ers - 14 games

    Packers - 13 games

    Cowboys/Dolphins/Giants - 11 games

Those are definitely some Madden stats!  haha  The likelihood of Brissett throwing the 3rd most passing yards in a season in NFL history is probably like 0.01%.  And those are insane receiving numbers by a rookie for Campbell.

The Pats didn't make the playoffs?  O.o  What were the team W-L records?  Who has the #1 pick?  Where are you drafting?  Where does that WSH 2nd rounder fall?

As always, thanks and keep it up!

Because he doesn't want to play against BB. That's partly tongue-in-cheek. Only partly, though.

The real reason is that he came of age as a part of an organization that was well run and winning SBs. He knew that if he stayed, he'd always be in the mix for rings. And the couple times that they had somewhat protracted contract negotiations, he did get paid well (2005, he was made a top five paid QB; 2010, he was made the highest paid QB). Over time, he's really shown that he values being part of a great organization more than getting more money.

It would be a different story if the Patriots didn't know what they were doing around him. People compare Brady's contracts with other QBs, but other QBs haven't been supported by BB. Brady's decision making process is influenced by playing for the greatest coach of all time.

I should have phrased that question from Kraft/BBs' perspective instead of Bradys' perspective.  Why hasn't Kraft/BB repeatedly made Brady the highest paid QB ever?

But you hit the nail on the head with the bolded.  We've seen how giddy Irsay gets to make his QB the highest paid in the history of the league, while BB is more frugal with his QB so that he has more money to make his defense borderline-elite every year.

He pays top-tier defenders at every level of his defense like Wilfork, Revis, Gilmore, Hightower, etc.  I can't remember the Pats ever being in a situation like the Colts where they had more cap-room than the rest of the league.  BB always seems to spend as much as he can on defense, while still having enough left over to pay his QB and STILL go out and sign guys like Randy Moss, Josh Gordon, AB...  it's frustrating seeing how well run that organization is...  :wall:

This thread was a train wreck... glad some of that got cleaned up.  Thank you mods.

We're 4 weeks into the season, why are we even discussing what we should do with picks that haven't even been established yet?

I know, let's draft a kicker with the Redskins pick!  :funny:

Well, unless of course, that a negative argument starts that he "is" after all...done. Then it will go pages again.

The two teams that were in the Super Bowl are having kicker problems.

Pats put Gostkowski on IR and Zuerlein misses a game-winner for the Rams last night.

I wonder if their fan bases are calling for heads to roll like some in this forum were doing 2 weeks ago...

But not now. You have to pay them...and no one drafts well enough to bring 3-4 components of an elite D or O every year...just not possible.

It is possible, it just takes a lot of home cookin.  Which comes back to elite coaching.

Gotta have late-round picks and UDFAs get coached up and turn into studs.

Nobody just walks in as a rookie and makes their unit elite.

  12. 5 minutes ago, Superman said:

Truth is, it takes a good balance of the three. Without drawing a hard line on "elite," we have to go back a long way to find a SB team that didn't feature good QBing in the playoffs, good defense in the playoffs, and good coaching. The last 'meh' QB to win a SB is Flacco, but he was outstanding in the playoffs.

Yeah, I pointed out in a previous thread a long time ago that usually a HOF QB had a HOF HC.

But the ol saying that defense wins championships still holds water, so no HOF SB-winning QB/HC would have their rings/gold jackets without their defenses.

    but not with elite defenses

    Those were absolutely elite defenses.

The Ravens and Steelers have been known for their elite defenses for the last 20 years with players like Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Troy Polumalu, James Harrison, etc. while leading most significant defensive statistical categories on a yearly basis...

    How are you defining "elite"?

defenses get old fast, look at seattle now.  they are still a good team but the super bowl winning D is long gone.

But look at the Ravens and Steelers.  They continually invest highly in their defenses and have had winning D for years, going on decades.

And to the bolded, you just can't. That's the point of free agency and the salary cap. And it's not just on defense, it applies to a great OL, it applies to a WR corps, etc. And even without the cap, this same challenge applies to a great coaching staff.

True.  I've noticed that BB continually lets any player/coach go in FA to play for other teams (except Brady, but I think Brady is afraid to play for anyone but BB).  He seems to try and hang on to his best DBs, while he seems to let his best pass rusher leave every year, and still keeps his defenses in the top-10...

Maybe the QB/Defense argument is a wash, and the real key is having that Elite HC that can put it all together and make it work year-in and year-out.  I mean, I have yet to see anyone choose Elite QB and Elite Defense.

I hope so too.  I really haven't seen much to tell me Reich is at an "elite" level coaching yet.

Yeah, I don't think he's there yet as a HC.

But if you take into account what he did with Philly before we hired him, I think he has the makings to get there once he gets his footing as a HC.

Remember it's only his 2nd year as a HC, but he seems to be on his way.  :goodluck:

It's easier to sustain the coach and the QB. That's two people.

An elite defense requires six or seven high level starters at the right positions, plus solid depth. So you're looking at 10-12 players. And if they're pieces to a great defense, they'll want to be paid, so you'll have to replace foundational players regularly.

It's hard to even build an elite defense. I think Colts fans should know that. Sustaining an elite defense for more than a couple years is nearly impossible, and that's without big injuries to critical players.

While true, isn't the reverse true about the QB?

As Colts fans, we've seen how hamstrung a team can be by the franchise QB being the highest paid player in the league.  Not a lot of money left for foundational pieces on the defense.

You're also only one injury away from purgatory, which we as Colts fans also know all too well.  A handful of elite players on defense can make up for the loss of one to injury.  Relying on one elite player is easier, but riskier.

But the way the NFL is run these days,  this one isn't a hard question...

    It's Elite Coach/Elite QB.

Are you answering the right question, though?  The OP asked which 2 will the Colts acquire first, and how long until we have 2 of those 3.

You might want the QB before the defense, but do you think the Colts will be able to find one anytime soon?

I think we already have the elite coach (hopefully), and Ballard will be able to construct an elite defense in the next few years.  I'm not holding my breath that the Colts will find an elite QB in the next few years, but I am optimistic that Jacoby can win us a SB with the right coach/scheme and an elite defense.

To add to this:  Just look at what has happened to some elite QBs in the playoffs/SB.

How many times did an elite defense knock Peyton out of the playoffs?  And I include the Saints, even though I hate how their head-hunting style of play is what made them elite.  I mean, just look at that record-setting Broncos offense from 2013 when it met the Legion of Boom in the SB.  43-8...

How many times did Elway get knocked out of the playoffs/SB by an elite defense?

When Brady hasn't made it to the SB, it's usually been because he ran into a buzzsaw defense in the AFCCG like the Steelers, Raven, or Broncos.

  20. Pats put Gostkowski on IR.

Zuerlein just missed a game-winner for the Rams.

No such thing as a sure thing at kicker in the NFL.  We might be grateful we still have Vinny down the road.
