I would love two u defeated for just one reason.. no matter who wins.. NO MORE TALK OF THE DANG MIAMI DOLPHINS of 1972..

Except that talk of the Undefeated 2019 Pats would be even worse...

Question for Colts fans:  If the Pats going 19-0 in 2019 meant that BB and Brady would retire afterward, would you want it to happen?

Everyone talking about how the Patriots haven't played anyone yet, please answer this. Who is the best team in the NFL right now?

    The Pats?

    And they can't play themselves?

Is this a trick question Supe?  You wascally wabbit.  haha

You can nitpick Hooker and his replacement Odum.  Factor in that Hooker was pick 15 and Odum was an UDFA, and you have to wonder what our overall FS play and availability would look like if we could get a much more talented Odum at pick 40.

Nelson was pick 6.  CB skipped a trade.  While its great that Nelson pancakes guys, the play in KC where Mack runs up the middle after Nelson blocks two defenders shows why he's great.  He pushed the first guy out of the way, then shielded the second defender several yards past the LOS.  If he pancaked the first guy, fell over and laid on him for 3 seconds, Mack would've probably had only a 5 yard gain.  While a G obtained in a trade down, say pick 20 quality G, probably could not have pancaked the first guy, he may have been able to push the first guy out of the way and shield the second guy too.

What do you want to get for the capital you spend?  How often can you really use that extra talent in a meaningful way?

This is where the nitpicking comes in.

You just couldn't resist could you?

The topic of the thread is takeways about the game..... I said that our backups beat their backups, with officiating that was backup quality (all over the place, calls that both killed momentum and gave momentum to each team at various times)

The point of the comment, if you're capable of supplementing written words with abstract things like nuance and context in appropriate dosages, is that given the situation, not much can be taken away from this one game.  Encouraging, yes, but takeaways, doubtful.

And you accuse me of moving the goal posts?

Let's review how you decided to jump into this conversation:

Well, we learned that our backups can beat KCs backups in a game where the officiating must have been conducted by backup officials.

Other than that, I'm not sure what to take away.

Like I said earlier, "backups beating backups" is just a generalization applicable to any NFL game, so no point in that comment.  The officiating is also a complaint applicable to any NFL game.  "I'm not sure what to take away" could also be applied to any game if you really wanted... and what is that anyway?  That's not an opinion.  That's nothing.  You really didn't say anything with your original post.  If you had nothing to say, then why create that waste-of-space nothing post?

Your original post is a very deflated take on what was a huge Colts win that puts them in a tie for first in the division going into a bye week.  It might have big implications on the playoffs.  It showed that Ballard has constructed a team better able to handle injuries (and abrupt retirements) than KC and probably a lot of other teams.  It showed that Reich/Eberflus/Sirianni can gameplan with the best of 'em.  It showed that we are better from top to bottom than a lot of people thought we were.  The Colts won the game.  Period.  How's that for takeaways?

You know what I takeaway from your original post and subsequent back-and-forths with multiple people?  You are who we thought you were.  Now if you wanna nitpick a huge Colts win, then nitpick their *, but you are who we thought you were, and we're not gonna let you off the hook.  :P

If you're going to play a "what of scenario", then play it all the way and don't just pick the way that fits a narrative.

You should take your own advice.  Using your own logic, every game in the NFL every week is won by backups beating backups, because guess what?  EVERY team has injuries.  EVERY week.  There's no point to your hypotheticals about starters vs starters.  :blah:

I could do the same thing you are and say that if both teams were 100% healthy, the Colts STILL would have won, and then spend pages and pages defending my opinion with generalizations and hypotheticals, but what's the point?

You just keep doing the same thing you always do:  change the subject of a thread with your opinion, move the goalposts to fit your narrative, and keep pushing your narrative when people challenge it.

My fandom is different from your fandom, which is different from the next person's fandom. And it's not our place to judge the quality of each other's fandom based on some arbitrary test of loyalty.

I forget that sometimes.  I need to remember that the only thing I can control is my reaction to what goes on around me.  I can't worry about how others react to the same things.

If someone wants to freak out and be a pessimistic negative nancy, I can't do anything about it.  Heck, that might be how some people find joy.  haha

All I can do is keep being a positive optimistic fan.  Slap my blue-colored glasses on and call me a Homer!

I'm tired of people telling other people how to be good fans. People experience things differently, and that's okay.

I'm guilty of doing this from time to time.  I have a very strong opinion about this, though.

I used to take being a Colts fan WAY too serious.  I was obsessed with the Colts winning.  I went into a three-day depression after the Colts lost to the Pats in the 2003 AFCCG.  My happiness was literally dependent on the Colts winning games, and that was not healthy.

I wasn't enjoying the experience of just being a fan of the Colts and of the game of football itself.  I've since learned to just sit back and enjoy the ride.  Enjoy the game, win or lose.  Enjoy the little things and not get so hung-up on the big things.  The Colts may never win another SB, and that's ok.

So when I see people doing what I used to do, and constantly pointing out the negatives that need to be improved, I see that unhealthy obsession with winning that I used to have.  We're talking about a GAME.  A pastime.  Something that should bring you joy.

If being a fan doesn't bring you joy because the team isn't good enough and isn't winning enough, then maybe the problem isn't the team, it's how you experience being a fan.  Some people take it way too seriously.  It's just a game.  :2c:

I prefer QBs like JB over QBs like Mahommes.

Mahommes seems to feast or famine on the big plays, and has little patience or consistency to move the ball in a ball-control fashion.  He would also require a ton of salary cap, meaning his play would be pretty much the sole factor in wins or losses.

I agree (feels weird to say that as a Colts fan that's had Manning/Luck for the past two decades).

To the bolded, I think that might be Andy Reid as much as Mahomes.  Their gameplan was probably to attack our two backup safeties, so Reid probably scripted a number of big plays down the field.

But I think you're right about Mahomes.  I think he has a little Aaron Rodgers in him when it comes to extending plays looking for a downfield shot.  As exciting as that can be, it's risky, and I'd rather have Brissett just checking it down and extending drives.

try to be intellectually honest about the matchups.

It feels like you're being intellectually elusive because you don't wanna go back on a point you made, but I'll play along with your example where JB is hobbled, TY and Ebron out, Doyle with the drops, Houston, Sheard and Autry out on D:

Well since the OLine and RBs are still fine, and assuming Doyle isn't missing blocks as well as dropping passes, I'd say our running game is still going to dominate the LOS and TOP, keeping Mahomes on the sideline.  Alie-Cox can replace Ebron in a pinch, and I'm sure Chester Rogers can get called for PI as well as TY.  haha

Now our pass-rush might not be as effective without Houston, Sheard, and Autry, but remember even Grover Stewart got a sack on Mahomes last night.  And Muhammad isn't a bad pass-rusher either.  I think with how banged up KCs OLine was, our DLine was going to get to Mahomes, no matter who lined up.

Now you do the same exercise with KC:  Their two starting safeties are out (so no Mathieu making plays), their best LB is out, two of their best WRs are out and their TE is dropping balls (oh wait, that was the case anyway), AND their franchise QB retired two weeks before the season.  :D

The worst call of the game, by far, was Kelce's fumble. He caught the ball, had two feet down, was looking to run with it, and got hit. A very obvious fumble.

I disagree.  The ball got knocked out just as the second foot came down and before he could "make a football move".

Obviously, I wanted it to be a fumble, but I think the refs actually made the right call there, to let it play out as a fumble and overturn it after review.

How do you think we would have done with JB hobbled, TY out, Ebron out, Doyle dropping a bunch on O, and Huston, Sheard, and Autry out on D?

Well, we just won with no Luck, Funchess out, Campbell out, Ebron dropping a bunch on O, and Leonard, Lewis, Hooker, and Geathers out on D...  :funny:

  12. I've seen WR and QB come up in multiple threads tonight.  And not in a good way.  The dust hasn't even settled from the KC game, and people are already talking about needing better QBs and WRs...

Are we as Colts fans just conditioned to expect big passing plays?  Did Manning/Harrison/Wayne/Stokley and Luck/Hilton/Wayne do something to our brains?

I think we should be more focused on what just won us a huge game:  running the ball and playing defense.

I'll be honest, after Mahomes threw that ridiculous TD in the 1st...

But even though Mahomes was doing Mahomes things at first, the Colts did exactly what they needed to do for all 4 quarters to win this game.

Major props to Reich, Flus, and all the players.  Great job tonight.  :scoregood:

Why makes you count Cain? I didn’t call for anything Flashy. This team needs a reliable second option not possibly good options. Teams take away TY and this offense gets very very limited

Did we even need to go downfield tonight?

We were running the ball for 8-9 yards on 1st down...  if that's limited, then sign me up for more!  haha

Are you serious?  WR makes plays but WR is not ready to make plays?  How do you even...

If you were the GM, would you try and continue to make due with that we have or do you got out and get a WR, say with that extra 2nd pick? After TY man it is really tough push the ball downfield. Ebron has the yips or something also

    What is this?

The Colts just won the biggest game on their schedule with smash-mouth football, and you want more flashy downfield plays to WRs?

And with TY, Funchess, Campbell, and Cain probably all coming back next year, you want to spend a high 2nd-rounder on a WR?!?

This is what Jim talked about when we moved on from Polian and Peyton.

This was the smash mouth type team he wanted. Shame Andrew left, but this is Pitt/Balt/NE type ball when they're clicking. You CAN win ugly in this league by grinding a team down into the 4th qrt.

    I love it.

I love winning this way.  You could just see the will being sucked out of the Chiefs players.

Quenton Nelson may be the turning point for this franchise, when we went from a QB-reliant team to a smash-mouth team.

It is but that just makes it even better, not only did we beat the Chiefs, at their field but did it against crappy refs

    ^ THIS ^

We beat one of the best teams in the league, we beat their MVP, we beat their 12th man (that famous Arrowhead home-crowd) and we beat the 13th man (refs).

The Colts were not going to be denied tonight.
