  1. I don't think it's a matter of "going for it" at this point in the year. They are going to be trying to beat Buffalo next week at exactly the same level as they would be if they were 8-1 or 7-2 right now, because nothing is locked up. "Going for it" really only comes into play for the last game..though this year with Cincy losing and Denver taking a bit of a nose dive it's conceivable they might find themselves having locked everything up at 14-0 if they keep winning, so there may be 2 "meaningless" games. The way their O-Line has been banged up this year, I tend to agree that hitting the playoffs healthy is a far more important goal. Going in 16-0 with a bunch of concussed lineman and other assorted injuries is pointless. Put Jimmy G. and the 2nd stringers in and go all out to win with your subs. Maybe they'll pull it off.

  2. And everything falling into place for the Patriots again.

    Wonderful.

lol...dude you need to give yourself a vacation from the Patriots. They aren't going undefeated this year. Hell...I'm starting to think that if they hit 12-0 that will probably lock up a first round bye, at which point Brady should announce he's taking the suspension...the way things have gone for this team this year, keeping him off the field and away from injuries is A-OK with me! Gronk should take the suspension too...in solidarity!

  3. I love the "Pats get all the calls" comments. Did anyone actually watch this game? The Pats had more penalties called against them than any other game all year today. They got flagged for a ton of questionable PI calls, not to mention having the potential game-salting TD called back for holding. You can't make the argument that they got away with anything today. That Beckham TD that was waived off was without question the right call. Mike Carey didn't even mince words when they brought him in. The ball was punched out as his second foot was coming down...hard to believe that was called a TD on the field.

But for the few of you who are in the "rooting for injuries" mode (classy as that is), I guess you can pray that Edelman's injury is a season-ender. If that's the case, the Pats are going to come back to the pack quick.

  4. It's a Vegas insider thing from what I've read. It's to prevent collusion amongst teams and betters so there's nothing to hide. Integrity of the game as well.

That is exactly it. The integrity of the game would be severely compromised if teams weren't required to disclose injuries. If Luck is more banged up than is being reported, then Colts insiders who know the "real deal" (if in fact this is true) have valuable proprietary information that those who gamble for a living would pay money to be privvy to. Once you introduce that element, you have problems.

  5. I don't know which is more hilarious here - the pats fans saying other teams are planting bugs or the pats fans saying people hate the pats because they win. Either way, thanks for the laughs.

I don't get the sense you're really laughing though. This thread seems filled with sadness.

  6. Actually. No. I hate the Patriots because they cheat and lie. And get away with it. I have no problems with dynasties. Every sport has them, NBA: Lakers, Bulls etc. MLB: Yankees. Fyi, I liked all 3 of those teams during their runs. But none of those teams were caught cheating multiple times and use national titles deserve astericks.

Really? So when the Yankees won titles with steroid users like Clemens, Pettitte, and A-Rod, that doesn't cross whatever "morality" line you've established to determine whether champions are legitimate or if they cheated? That's interesting...

  7. Word I'm hearing is that the Pats have actually asked the NFL to sweep the visiting locker rooms pre-game because they suspect that at some point some visiting team will plant listening devices to try to frame them. THAT is pretty interesting and tells you a lot about how they perceive the climate in the NFL to be "take down the Pats by any means necessary".

  8. What can be annoying to me is that they are divisional games. And on a short week it really hurts teams in preparation since division games are the most important.

But, I think the NFL also might feel on a short week the teams you already know the best are the ones in your own division.

yeah that's the logic they use (that the divisional teams know each other more and need less prep time). Meanwhile, Miami has a new coach and the Pats haven't played them yet this year, so does that make sense?

  9. Talk about the peak of hypothetical and reaching

It's not really hypothetical when you consider Belichick has never had any issue whatsoever with moving on from higher salary stars when they were still performing at a high level...Lawyer Milloy, Richard Seymour, Logan Mankins, etc etc...when veteran stars start taking up a lot of cap room, Bill moves on...except with Brady. Why is that, if the coach is the "only reason" the Pats are successful?

  10. I'd say with a healthy Luck it goes like this in the AFC

    1.  NE

    2.  Cincinnati (though I still have my doubts but they're coming along)

3/4.  Indy/Denver.  That Denver defense is scary good but Peyton looks terrible.  No running game and no TE to speak of.  If he's having trouble throwing the ball downfield now what is he going to do in December/January when the wind is kicking up and its cold.

    5.  Jets.  ( I hate admitting that)

Pittsburgh is better than both Indy and Denver when Ben is back.

  11. Was a very good game. The Pats were never on cruise control but the last 3 drives were not "typical" pats, they were actually showing respect for the colts Onby trying to run as much time off the clock as possible. Against say the Phins Brady is throwing and throwing a lot.

I was pleased with the Pats game as a fan considering.

    1. We had our practice squad Olineman in for most of the game

    2. We lost Sheard (top sack guy) on D but kept the Colts with only 2 TD drives till late in the 4th

    3. Butler looked dang good in coverage.

    4. Even with the colts doing the best job ever on Gronk and flooding the middle of the field they still moved the ball well.

The Colts threw everything at the Pats including the kitchen sink, and they have shown be a team not to be taken lightly come the playoffs.

I don't buy this either. This looked like pretty much every Pats game this year with the exception of Jacksonville, which was a blowout from the get-go. I never bought into the notion that the Pats were going to walk in here and score 70 or whatever other crap was being spewed. Most NFL games turn on a handful of plays both for and against. It's how you respond and adjust, and the Patriots are good at not panicking, letting the game unfold, and reaction accordingly as it goes along. So I don't think Belichick was "showing respect" to the Colts by handing the ball off. I think he was simply trying to run clock off in a 2 score game late in the 4th quarter. That's just basic strategy...same as backing off and essentially conceeding the last TD. Yes it resulted in an onside kick situation, but in the worst case scenario the Colts would have gotten the ball at midfield with no timeouts, a minute to play, and down 7. Had they played tighter D on the previous drive and gotten burned for a quick strike over the top, then they might have been looking at the same situation but with a lot more time to play. So they backed off, made the Colts kill 2 minutes of clock before pulling to within 7, and greatly increased their odds of closing it down.

  12. control the clock on offense, keep the Pats offense on the sideline, and (most importantly) score TD's, not field goals. Long drives down the field that end in 3 points won't do the Colts any good. They'd be better off taking gambles on 4th down than settling for 3. No team ever seems to do this against the Pats...always puzzles me.

  13. I was talking about the Colts game.  That is why I responded to SteelCityColt who was talking about a similar thing happening in the Colts game and why I started my sentence with, "In the Colts game..."

I figured that would alleviate any confusion but I must admit, I did not consider the Pats fan factor (Average Colts fan IQ plus Tom Brady's age all of that divided by 2)

um...ok? Sorry - was just trying to engage in a discussion. I must have misunderstood your post.

  14. No browner, no revis, no dennard, no Arrington, no fletcher. No corners. Malcolm butler is overrated lol

Be careful of putting your eggs in this basket. While it's true that the secondary is weaker than last year with the loss of Revis, there are 2 things to remember:

    1) Butler can play. He's no Revis...but he's a better than average cornerback in this league right now. He's not giving it up when it's thrown near him.

    2) Pass rush...the Pats clearly compensated for the weakening of the DB by going heavy on pass rushers. So they are getting a ton more pressure on the passer than they have in years past, which is helping the iinexperienced secondary. The biggest mismatch of the game might be the Pats pass rush vs the Colts O-line.

  15. In the Colts game it was just the TV time that was incorrect.  I noticed that too, they kept running the clock when after the player ran out of bounds and the ref signaled for the clock to stop.  But then by the time they got up to the line it had been corrected.

I believe the NFL has actually admitted that it was the game clock that was run off erroneously. The Steelers should have had 18 more seconds on the clock when they started their final drive.

  16. Some HCs are notoriously bad with the clock/time situational football.

The rest of the AFC are lucky Big Ben is out. I really think they would have lit it up this year.

Given the overall weakness of the AFC this year, they definitely would have been in the mix. They're by no means out of it yet though.

  17. This also happened I'm fairly sure in the Texans/Colts game... twice, well in the reverse with clock stopping when it shouldn't. It's certainly come up in a GDay topic recently.

Amazing how this can even happen, surely they have a guy who's only job is to literally watch the clock.

Mike Tomlin has not impressed me much this year. I thought the Steeler's 2 minute offense in both halves vs the Pats was bad to the point of embarrassing. Then he has the questionable 4th down calls that led to them blowing the Ravens game...now he doesn't notice that they stole 18 seconds from him on the last drive of the game with his team trailing? I realize that Bill Belichick worship can get over the top, but it's truly unfathomable to me that he wouldn't have immediately noticed this error.

  18. I'm not going to lie...I think this game is going to be a snoozer. I think the Patriots are a much better team right now than the Colts (and I've watched a good amount of the Colts games this year). It's the NFL, so clearly the Colts could find a way to compete or even win the game. Weirder things have happened. But it's hard to make an argument right now that this game will look any different than any other Pats game this year, none of which have been particularly competitive with the possible exception of opening night vs the Steelers (and even that was a pretty comfortable win despite the garbage time TD at the end by Pitt).
