  1. I'm trying to develop a healthy fear for the Falcons, but I'm stuck on the defenses.

I will acknowledge that the Pats #1 ranking and average 15 ppg allowed is overstated somewhat due to the competition level. So I'll state that up front - I don't think the Pats D is as good as the stats indicate.

But offensively, they are 3rd in the league compared to ATlanta's first...and if you don't include the first 4 games when Brady didn't play, the Pats move up to 2nd...scoring 32 points per game in Brady games compared to Atlanta's 34. And while the overall competition level for the Pats was weaker, they actually faced more competitive defenses than Atlanta did (Pats have played 8 games vs Top 12 defenses versus 5 for the falcons.

So my take is that you have essentially equivalent offenses...the Pats will be facing the 27th ranked defense in the league, allowing over 25 ppg on average. How are they going to stop the Pats?! On paper, this is hands down the weakest defense they've faced in this year's playoffs and probably in any of their other Superbowl appearances. And while the Pats defense is not likely as good as their #1 ranking, they are probably still a top 10 D in the league...not saying they'll shut Atlanta down, but I think they are more likely to come up with a stop than Atlanta will.

Almost any intelligent young QB could have won a SB or two with Bill's system all these years.

If this is true, why then would a football mind like Belichick, who has a demonstrated track record for releasing/trading players in their prime, not have traded Brady after, say, the 2004 Superbowl? Can you imagine the return he would have gotten for a 3 time SB winner in his mid twenties? It would have set the franchise up potentially for another decade of dominance, because he could have just plugged in any old "young intelligent QB" at cheap cap dollars and loaded the team everywhere else between the trade chips and the available cap money. But instead, he decided to just keep Brady. That pretty much destroys this argument that Brady is merely the lucky recipient of Bill's system.

Because for the past 12 years I've seen some of the worst officiated games and most questionable things iv ever seen in my 20+ years of watching the NFL.

If you didn't notice the Pats corners tugging literally every single play, the 3 chop blocks that went uncalled, the blatant pass interference calls missed, the miraculous non fumble that was a fumble but didn't have a clear recovery even though someone came out of pile with it... then I'm not sure what to tell you.

It's not just this game it is literally every playoff game I've watched of the Pats these past 12ish years.  No one denies they are extremely well coached.  The issue is when that well coached team gets into the playoffs and the refs ensure that they make no mistake even though they do.  It's an unfair advantage.  Also it's not just the Pats there are a couple other teams that get the "special treatment" but those teams aren't as well coached as the Pats so it isn't as noticeable.

Not a single penalty was called on either team until the 3rd quarter. Are you seriously claiming that for more than half the game, only the Patriots committed penalties that weren't being called? Come on...that's ridiculous.

  4. There are a lot of Patriots connections on the Texans...I wouldn't expect Bill to intentionally try to embarrass them. It's the playoffs, so they will still try to put the game away as early as possible...but don't expect them to have the starters out there winging it around if they have a 17 point lead halfway through the 4th. They will just try to run clock.

I don't think any reasonable person would say Brady isn't a great qb.  That begs the question??  Why cheat??

it really does beg that question, doesn't it? Why WOULD an unquestionably great QB who has clearly proven over a lengthy career that he doesn't need the help risk his well established reputation to "engage in a scheme" that even if you believe it happened would have provided him with a negligible "advantage" given that we now all understand that balls deflate in the cold weather anyway? It defies logic.

     level of preparation

this is the key phrase that you can summarize the whole thread down to. There is no team I have ever seen in any sport that appears to be as prepared for virtually any situation as this team...and that goes for 'in-game' preparation as well out-of-game. Bill has an unmatched ability, for example, to see where even small tweaks to the rules (which happen every year) can suddenly render a particular position or scheme less valuable than it was prior to the rule tweak, and he will adjust his roster and depth positions accordingly. I can't even cite a ton of specific situations, because to be honest I don't tend to appreciate it until I watch other games and see the things that go on. It seems like almost every other game I watch I find myself watching some coach mismanage a situation and think "this is just something you never see here".

I feel bad for the person that has to follow Bill when he eventually retires.

    No, its not

Yes, it is...for all intents and purposes, as I said. Since 1999, 4 non-QB's have won it. So you have to have a pretty historical year as a non-QB to be considered. That's the reality.

With the third string rookie who was also hurt.

The fact that they went 3-1 in his absence doesn't really tell the story. The only time the offense looked even close to what it looks like with Brady was the first quarter of game 2 vs the Dolphins before Garappolo got hurt. In the other 3 and 3/4 games, they had exactly ONE TD Pass. So this notion that the 3-1 record diminishes his value is kind of silly, imo.

  9. If a QB had been injured for 4 games and then put up the numbers Brady put up, there would be no discussion. As to the notion that they "rolled along just fine" without him...they got shut-out by the freakin' Bills. 'nuff said.

How is use of walkie talkie cheating this seems lame

Regarding the Giants, coach Ben McAdoo broke a rule that is clear and known and obvious. Every year, all 32 teams are reminded of it. There is no ambiguity or confusion or lack of clarity. The walkie-talkie is present on the sideline, it can be used only by the backup quarterback, it can be used only for listening not speaking, and the coach can never, ever touch it.

Baltimore's better than this, they look totally flat on offense.

They do...but they are playing a team that lost 2 games, 1 of them to you guys when their 3rd string QB was playing with a broken finger on his throwing hand. The Pats are pretty good. That might be playing a role in why Baltimore looks flat.

Ravens D is playing well and so is Flacco.  You look at the Pats and Amendola is out as well as Gronk.  Brady is also getting hit a lot more this year but if I had to put money on it, the Pats will pull it out at home.  I hope I am wrong.  I think I'd rather see the Ravens in the playoffs over the Steelers.

Not true on Brady getting hit...he's getting hit much less this year. The O-Line is doing a much better job and they are running the ball more often.

Because unlike so many other teams they bend and give up FG awhile it appears every other teams giving up TDs. And the D looks scary bad at times, others it has players making circus catches (that Jet WR yeaterday TWICE on Butler one for the TD)

But there IS a price to be paid for bend don't break, in that it keeps the offense off the field thanks to long drives by the other team.

I don't think you have much to worry about, especially if you guys get HFA. They could lose in the SB though but then again Russell Wilson laid a fat egg at Tampa yesterday. Seattle couldn't of beat the Colts playing like that. The Cowboys are scary.

If they are healthy, they CAN win it all....I have no doubt about that, and i suppose all things considered that's not a bad place to be. As a fan, I don't enjoy watching this style of play though. It feels like they need to put up 30 to win against even a decent team. They can do it, but it sucks having to rely on that. That said, I think they are 3rd in points allowed this year, so what do I know? Stats are weird...this just doesn't feel like a good defense at all.

  15. First off, I will start off by saying that I agree the Pats right now look like they are no better than a solid contender to win it this year along with a few other teams (versus an unstoppable powerhouse team that will roll everyone). I have a lot of concerns about their defense, and their kicker, after years of being one of the best in the game, is struggling...he missed another chip shot yesterday at the half. Those are things that kill you in the playoffs.

But as far as coming to conclusions based solely on yesterday's game, I will just say that the Jets always play them tough on the road. They had lost 2 of their last 3 in New York coming into this game, and the only win was a 17-16 squeaker in 2014 (when they won the Super Bowl). Division games are tough in this league no matter who you are. All in all, I was actually encouraged by yesterday's game (2nd half in particular). The D played well against the run and were more aggressive in general.

That trade was all about the pick. Cooper had not done well and they knew it. No surprise he didn't pan out. But they still got the sweet pick for a player that would've commanded a contract that New England doesn't give out frequently.

And given that Az is under .500 halfway through the season, that pick is looking a lot better than people probably thought it would look when the deal was made.
