It’s the same scheme we had last year and it worked.     I’m sure we will evaluate everything....   this is a pretty thorough staff and front office.

Agreed on both counts.  There will be a thorough evaluation.  Also, it is true that the Colts were much better defensively last year, I agree.  They finished 10th in DVOA on defense.

Here are a few more detailed thoughts on the defense.  Let me know what you think and feel free to add on.

The basic scheme that the Colts utilize has been around a long time, but each coordinator adds his own wrinkles.  Last year was Eberflu's first year as DC.  Could it be that opponents began to adjust after digesting more film?  Maybe, but the base scheme is so simple, I doubt that played a huge role.  Eberflus started to mix in more man coverage this year, and continued to use his Nickel (Moore) as a blitzer to compensate for an average pass rush.

The Colts' schedule ended up being one of the weaker ones (25th toughest in the league this year), and the defense regressed despite that fact.

    LB

The LB corps was improved over the previous year with the maturation of both Walker and Leonard, together with the addition of Okereke.  After a slow start, Leonard eventually played like the elite playmaker that he is.  Walker slimmed down this off-season and the hard work paid off; he had a fantastic year.  Okereke has shown exciting flashes in recent weeks.  Ballard has hit on his LBs.

    CB/S

The loss of Kenny Moore really hurt the secondary, and I don't know if Desir was ever 100 "right" this year with respect to his hamstring.  Willis was a significant upgrade over Geathers at SS.  Geathers is physical, but his knees have betrayed him.

I was slightly disappointed in how much Ya-Sin had to play as a rookie.  Hopefully it'll benefit him later on, but he was picked on at times this year.  He has to learn how to play with grabbing.  He could've been called for PI a few more times today.

It's staggering to me that Hooker has not reached the levels the Colts anticipated him reaching when they selected him in Round 1.  He has not come close to sniffing the Pro Bowl.  Next year will be critical in deciding whether to re-sign him.

    DL

The loss of Turay was devastating, as pass rush took a huge hit after his injury.  Turay really flashed in the Chiefs game.  J. Houston was a good signing.  He was healthy and productive.

Unfortunately, Autry had a very disappointing year relative to the high expectations nearly everyone had for him in the pre-season.  In camp, he was described as unblockable.  I thought the Colts would finally have an interior pass rushing presence.  It never manifested.

Hunt went from having a career year to losing his job as a starter; he was virtually anonymous out there.

Overall, the Colts' DL was very adept at stopping the run *last* year, but this year, not so much.  I think that had a trickle-down effect that negatively impacted the rest of the defense.  The DL needs major changes for next year, both via FA and the draft.

Oh, Dear God, here we go....

It'll be the off-season from hell!

Everyone who was so smart last year, suddenly they are all suspect and incompetent.    Ballard, Reich and Flus.

I don’t suppose anyone might guess that because of injuries we are playing inexperienced guys who are learning on the job.   No, it can’t be that!   It has to be the front office and the coaching!

Once again the fans are smarter!

It’s going to be a long, LONG off-season.     :peek:

While your point about youth and injuries is reasonable, the Colts are 30th in the league in opponent completion percentage on the year.

Opposing QBs are *averaging* a 70% completion rate against the Colts.  That’s not kind of bad; that’s alarming.  That’s not going to get it done, ever.

That does speak to scheme.  And in today’s NFL, you can’t allow teams to complete passes at such an unbelievably high rate.  You’ll never get off the field.

I think even the Colts’ staff will have to take some hard looks at their scheme and whether they need different personnel to play more man.  That completion percentage needs to drop significantly.

  3. Give me Lamb (WR - Oklahoma) in R1

Give me Claypool (WR - Notre Dame) in R2/R3

Claypool is a beast.  Would give the Colts a formidable WR corps for years to come with Hilton, Campbell, Lamb, and Claypool.

Ballard and the staff have been scouting Claypool all year.  He's a monster ST player as well.  One of the highest-effort, hardest-edged competitors on ND's roster.

  4. Reportedly, Gruden is considering moving on from Derek Carr.

Carr is a 3x Pro Bowler.  He's 28 years old.  He's 8th in QBR this year behind only Jackson, Mahomes, Brees, Prescott, Stafford, Watson, and Wilson.

Pretty good company.  At worst, he would be an immediate upgrade over Brissett.  Perhaps he could flourish with a healthier franchise, allow the Colts to continue building their roster, and draft another QB without reaching or mortgaging the farm.

A statistical comparison with Luck (* denotes "leader"):

    Games:

    Carr (92)*

    Luck (86)

    Completions:

    Carr (2,065)*

    Luck (2,000)

    Completion %:

    Carr (63.8%)*

    Luck (60.8%)

    Passing Yards:

    Carr (22,111)

    Luck (23,671)*

    Passing TDs:

    Carr (141)

    Luck (171)*

    Carr (62)*

    Luck (83)

In the context of how he has been used previously, as an attempted elusive darter near the LOS which is what I remembered, he has not performed well because he is not very good at it.  I don't recall him ever scoring long-ish TDs as a RB, or gaining much YAC on his own.

You must've skipped the past 2 seasons.

The following examples are from this year, alone.

He's had about two seasons, and no he hasn't shown both.  Recent success as a punt returner would be a "hot take".

lol apparently you haven't watched Hines the past 2 seasons.  It's easy to see his traits on tape, which is why others (including Stampede Blue) have picked up on the fact that he deserves to be more involved in the offense, and obviously ST.

And I made my "hot take" before he exploded today.

Why am I even having a conversation with someone who is trying to tell me what I meant with my own thread?  I need to go into the concussion protocol.

Hines showed a bit of patience at the beginning of those punt returns and found lanes to sneak through. He’s a great player, just have to use him in the right situations.

It's mind-boggling that he never got more kick/punt return opportunities this year.

Rogers was basically a fair catch machine.

Teams kill to have guys like Hines that can take the ball to the house on any given play.  He's a good pass catcher and takes care of the ball.  The staff has to find a way to get Hines involved more.

Just like they found more carries for Wilkins today.

Wait.... Those were the good throws you thought? Shoulda caught them, yes..... But both had to twist and extend, even being open....they were better than half JBs throws, yes.... But that doesn't make them necessarily "good"

They hit the WRs in their hands.  The Pascal drop was thrown in perfect stride.

There are a lot of throws to criticize JB on, and this ain't it chief.

  10. Just started a thread last night saying Hines was under-utilized.

There were some hot takes in there, like Hines wasn't that fast or elusive.  Yeah okay lol.

Granted, some of those takes were by a dude who compared Drew Brees to Brissett in a game where Brees set the all-time single-game completion percentage record and said the Colts should draft a kicker ahead of QB.

    So, yeah.

He came very close to setting rookie records last year, and then....  Regression....

I think part of it is he ran a good amount of seam routes last year, which JB simply is not very good at seeing/hitting.  I think the other challenge may be JB's high time to throw, and the need to use a larger back to stay in and block. What I hated most is that they ran him between the tackles too much. He's ok when they are man blocking, but he's much better IMO on the edge.

Whatever the reason, he's capable of a lot more. Reich has several head scratchers this year.

    Quoted for truth.

Agreed on the between the tackles running.  However, I think his success there depends on the specific play call/blocking scheme being utilized.

For example, I think he's great in quick-hitting power schemes, where he doesn't have to rely on his mediocre vision.  Just let the OL get a hat-on-a-hat and let Hines explode to the second level.  Strangely, the Colts haven't used as much power as I'd like them to this year . . .

The only knock on Hines is that his ball security can be a little white-knuckle at times; but it's not like he's a fumble machine.  Only 2 in his NFL career (1 this year).

  12. Good "film room" article from Stampede Blue on the topic:

    https://www.stampedeblue.com/2019/12/21/21032312/film-room-nyheim-hines-needs-more-touches-in-2020

In 2018, Hines played 499 snaps (44% of the offensive snaps) while logging 148 touches for 739 yards and 4 touchdowns.

In 2019, he has played only 298 snaps (31% of available offensive snaps) while getting just 84 touches for 457 yards and 2 touchdowns.

    Love the explosiveness he possesses.

    giphy.gif

Shifty near the goal line, too.

  13. It really wasn't the scheme causing the problems though, was it?

It was Jacoby missing wide-open WRs (and those WRs included guys like Ashton Dulin in recent weeks).

It was the kicking game being a complete and utter failure.  And it was Brian Hoyer throwing TD passes to the opposing team.

The idea that scheme was the problem wasn't even an idea until these "wrinkles" were brought up.

Regardless, we don't need new wrinkles in the running game this week... so that would be stupid too. The only reason running game struggles at times is because the Ds don't respect the pass. Being that they mentioned TY in the discussion, it would have to be the passing game.

Anyway, the whole thing, regardless of what it's about, is pretty silly at this point. Seems like a pretty weak attempt to get a disappointed fan base to forget about missing the playoffs.

Random question, but where do the Colts stand in terms of negative run plays on 1st down?  I've lost count of how many 2nd and 13s or 2nd and 15s the Colts face after a ridiculously slow-developing run out of the shotgun on first down.  It's just as bad as a procedural penalty.

Is a predictability thing?  Do the Colts need better self-scouting of their early down run tendencies?

3 trends have really bothered me with the offense:

    1) Predictable, slow-developing runs on 1st down.  The Colts have such a physical offense line.  Why not run some more power?  Is Jacoby not counting numbers, or is it the scheme?

    2) Lack of no-huddle and up-tempo in the offense.  Utilizing more up-tempo potentiates the effectiveness of the Colts' o-line.  Hardly ever used.

    3) O's inability to consistently get to the LOS in a timely manner; sometimes there's not enough time on the play clock for Jacoby to use motion to probe the defense and it ends up being a fire drill to get the ball snapped.
