  1. Young team. Lots of talent and upside. You can see the difference in gameplanning, offensive playcalling, and a defense that is fast and wants to make plays. I loved what I saw today. But we should have won this game, and it stings really badly. Look forward to watching how they rebound and play on the road.

Specifically the run game. To think we could have had Mixon last year.

Had him? You think this guy should even be playing in the league? Have you seen the video of him breaking a woman's face in 4 places?

There is no place for Joe Mixon in Indianapolis.

Does Andrew Luck have to bail out the defense every game?

    Because that was pathetic.

I guess I am confused with your post. The title is 17 unanswered points is unacceptable, but then you ask if luck has to bail us out. Isn't unanswered points due to the offense not scoring? We had plenty of opportunities to practically put the game away by scoring and making it a two score lead late, and failed. Our offense failed at the end of the game with a chance to win. I think our defense did a pretty damn good job today. Andrew Luck and the offense (while they played great most of the game) failed to put up the points they should have and that was necessary to win this game.

Yes it most certainly would. If we take the opening drive and stick it in the end zone I will be beside myself.  Lol

I'm impressed with all aspects so far. But this offense is making moving the ball look easy. Grant and Hines have played spectacular compared to preseason. Ebron looks confident. Nelson is handling Atkins well.

Let's finish this game off strong and put these boys away in the 3rd quarter...

We still setting for field goals too often.  Gotta get it in the end zone more often.  Still anybody’s game at this point.

Agreed. But our offense is moving the ball. I'm interested in how Frank adjusts at halftime. A long td drive out of the gate here will be huge!

We have a decent young group out there. We don't have to get punked out in this one if we can get them to play fast and disciplined. Hopefully the coaches keep the game plan and the calls nice and simple on D. Whenever Dungy had a problematic outing on D he would really simplify things for the next game. The reporters would say Tony it really looks like the D has this problem and that problem. They would ask him what he planned to do about it. The answer in most cases was Execute,Do Less(keep it simple) and play faster. The reporters would look at him like he was crazy but it usually worked.

More often than not, it's exactly that. Keep it simple. Play fast. Execute.

If I remember correctly, I read an article long time ago that Doug Pederson was calling all the plays for the Eagles last year.

    He did indeed, supposedly.

But so did my high school coach on defense years ago... when we all know the guy up top was telling him what he was seeing and offering "suggestions" that normally was used.

Frank was instrumental in the preparation for game day, for breaking down film and finding mismatches, etc.  He stood in the shadows all year last year with the eagles while Pederson got the credit/fame/multi million dollar book deal.  It's Frank's time to step in the spotlight. LET'S GO FRANKY!

  8. Frank and Luck are going to play to win.

I think we acquired some dang good talent in the 2nd round this year. With 2 for next season, I like us picking in the 20 range. Gives us a lot of options, and might be just what we need to field a playoff contender (if everyone develops properly.) I'm talking Kelly, Basham, Mack, Hooker, Turay, Smith, leonard, and of course Nelson. Those guys have to make strides this season.

    Here’s what I fear:

Colts get the ball, Micheal up the gut for two yards, Luck to Doyle for four yards, Luck attempt to a triple teamed TY, incomplete.

Cincy gets the ball, drive takes the rest of the half.  They score.

Second half, Colts abandon the run.  Cincy tees off.

    Nightmare.

Chuck Pagano isn't the coach anymore...

I've been kicking this around for some time and now is the time to talk about it....

First,  I'm happy to say that the website has benefited tremendously from a large number of new posters the last few years.    Posters who not only know Colts football,   but football in general and they read as much as they can and contribute.    They join a strong group and I think the website has never been stronger.

    So.....

One of the casualties of the new CBA which went into effect in 2011 is that so much practice and contact have been eliminated,   that teams simply don't feel ready for the start of the season.     I'm talking practice in March,  April, May and June.      I'm talking camp in July and August.    There just isn't much practice time and hitting allowed.     Coaches and GM's are hugely frustrated by this.   Hoping this will change in the next CBA.

And in stories I've read over the past few years,   their view is this....    that teams are simply not ready for the start of the season.    That teams play their way into form in September.    That teams need 2-4 games to really get sharp and ready to compete at the highest level.    That's why there's so much sloppy play in September.   Teams aren't sharp.

Bottom line for me....     with a team like the Colts...    so many new, young players,  and a new coaching staff with first time HC, OC, DC and ST,   we might look especially bad in September.     Things could get dicey in weeks 3-6.   The schedule gets dramatically harder.    We might struggle a bit.   Heck, we might get our butts kicked once or twice.

Here's what I'm lookig for.....     Do the Colts get better in October?     And even better in November and December.     I sure hope so.   That's what I want to see.     Does Andrew look sharper as he plays his way back into form and the rust shakes off.     I sure hope so.

Like all of you,  I'm much more excited about this year than last.     Win or lose,  I expect us to be a better team this year when all is said and done.

    Looking forward to 2018!

I'm also looking forward to your thoughts in this thread.....

    NCF

My personal opinion on the idea of our young defensive players not having enough hitting time to perform well is this: They are much faster than in years past. We also have some more natural tacklers on the team than in years past. I think we will see a team that can play fast, get to a ballcarrier quicker and in larger numbers, which will help get them on the ground. I don't look for it to much of hindrance. I look for the new emphasis on targeting/helmet leading to be just as difficult for veteran players to adjust this season as a young player adapting to the hitting in the big league. I think the biggest transition for a rookie is the speed of the game, and I think we are already ahead of the ballgame with that aspect with the speed of the new players. The scheme will help them play fast and aggressive which should help them transition quickly.

Offensively, this lack of hitting in the offseason could help our unit, as we have some shifty young players. Get them in open space, protect the football, and try to make plays.

Sunday, it all starts up front, and I don't look for hitting to be an issue with Quenton Nelson. Our recent pickup of Hewitt from the Bengals even said that if we can establish any kind of run game and limit the front 7 of the Bengals, we will be able to make plays on the perimeter. That gives me great hope on Sunday.

I look for highs and lows this season with a young unit. But if we can limit big plays, and make some of our own, we will see an improved unit over the course of the season, and it should be a fun year of constant growth. Go Blue.

Well how about Frank making the difference of no Alshon Jeffery, LeGarrett Blount, Brent Celek, and Trey Burton.
These guys may have executed the plays better than their replacements.
No, more than likely Pederson had a solid game plan and his play calling was again, very good.
You are going to be very unhappy Sunday. JMO of course. Go Colts

You obviously missed out on me repeatedly saying sarcastically, "hopeful thinking."

There were a lot of variables in the game of why they struggled offensively comparative to Super Bowl Sunday. Frank not involved is just one small difference in the two games.

I'm not going to be disappointed Sunday, I can assure you that. I get to spend time with my family at Lucas Oil Stadium and watch #12 play his first real football game in 20 months. I will be happier than a hog in crap.

  12. ...to keep this relevant to the Indianapolis Colts and Frank Reich so it doesn't get moved over to the NFL section, I ask this question and expect full participation:

Which aspects of Philly's offense do you like, and expect Frank to carry over and utilize here? RPO's (lord help us if we are on national television with cris collinsworth's amazing commentary)?

So you think the Eagles playbook has changed? I would say only tiny adjustments.
What i saw was Atlanta defenders anticipating well and playing really good D.
The same with the Eagles D.   BOTH are top SB contenders with Many really good players.
The Bengals D won't be as good, but our miss mash of all NEW with inexperienced players and a limited Lucky SHOULD make their D look very good.

Are you putting words into my mouth? Because it looks to me like you are putting words into my mouth.

I not once said their playbook changed nor did I say anything about their playbook. I said their gameplanning looked off and their playcalling was suspect. That's literally all.

But yes, I agree that Atlanta's defense played very well. Tight coverage all game long.

    Foles is not Wentz.

    Yeah...

Except I didn't say that he was or anything like that. I said they dont look the same as they did in the superbowl... or the other 2 playoff games for that matter. And if you remember, the quarterback was... drum roll... Nick Foles, not Wentz.

Nick Foles also said that Frank was instrumental in prepping him especially in film.

I actually think their offense has looked pretty similar. I don't mean that as a negative, or that Reich didn't have anything to do with their success. I just think the league's had longer to scout their offense and more specifically their Nick Foles led offense, not to mention they've just not been playing that well.

They have struggled all preseason on offense. I'm not sure it's a credit to defenses, as most offenses are kept vanilla. It's more of an execution standpoint, but execution is only consistent if the preparation/planning is on point in this league. I just don't see it to start in this game.

I also realize there was a weather delay, and that affects everybody.

Maybe they should put in ajayi more and use him actually.  Don't know why there not using him really..

And I have him on my fantasy team so I'm kinda t'd off

Agreed. That's a big component of game planning, and it just seems off to me tonight.

Again hopeful thinking on my part that they are missing Frank to start the season...
