  1. Ball has been IMO looking pretty good lately too.  He started off the season slow, but it looks like he's a pretty good #2 back now.

Ball is a better runner than Moreno. He has improved a lot in catching the football, and the pass protection has improved. They may split the carries for now but Ball can take over completely at some point next season.

  2. Denver does not have a great rush D but neither do the Pats. But the Pats have a trio of backs in Blount, Ridley and Vareen which will pose more problems for Denver. That being said, Moreno ran rough shod over the Pats back in Nov so I am not sure either team has any real advantage one way or the other but I expect the Pats to stay committed to the run all game whereas I can see Denver passing more given the conditions will be good.

Having three RBs is a good thing but you cannot put all of them on the field. For Pats they could use one of Blount and Ridley, to go with Vareen as receiver, and that is about it. Most of the time they can use only 1 of them.

And none of them is as complete as a healthy Moreno. He is quicker than Blount, more reliable than Ridley, and tougher as a runner than Vareen. And do not forget Montea Ball. He is a beast as far as he holds onto the ball.

Pats Blount is really overrated. He is known as one of the worst short-yardage/goal-line back although he is a big guy. His recent revival has a lot to do with the opponents' bad defense.

All depends on the flow of the game. I see both teams willing to run the ball to start the game, but if one team takes a 2-score lead the other team will have to pass.

  3. And this approach has hurt them in the past like with...

    Lawyer Milloy

    Ty Law

    Asante Samuel

    Randall Gay

    Deion Branch

    Richard Seymour

Aquib Talib is a free agent at the end of the season and I hope the Pats do NOT play hard ball with him and * him and his agent off where he feels disrespected and he just leaves for another team out of spite.  They need to make competitive offers to keep him.

I think Samuel was overrated. Seymour was asking for too much. Branch was never an elite player although he was one of the best Pats wideouts other than Moss. Belichick is a genius but he has never done well on evaluating receivers in drafts.

The problem was Pats did not find enough talents to replace these guys in the past 4-5 yrs. The overall quality of the team is not comparable to the team that won the SBs. People like to praise Belichick for his getting the most out of his mediocre team and going deep into the playoff every year, but not winning the SB has a lot to do with his failure in evaluate talents lately.

  4. For sure but the system works. Bill generally moves on from aging vets a year or two before they are done. He gets criticized the most for this as fans grow attached to players and want to see them stay but I think he has proven that you have to move on and replace with younger guys to keep the cap in place and also increase the competiveness of the team.

Welker was unique though in that they offered him two separate contracts that he turned down. I think he and his agent misjudged the market more than anything else.

The Patriots way work most of the times since in NFL veterans can wear down quickly from their peak, and younger guys are cheaper. This works very well for positions taking most of the punishments, such as LB, safety, slot receivers, and RB.

But this can only work when the coach's judgment on the young guys' talent level is accurate. Belichick misjudged many times on the defensive players they took in the past 4-5 years, and their selections of WRs were never correct. Their RBs were also very questionable. One thing that was countering the Patriots way was to build everything around Brady, and luckily that part worked.

  5. True but I think Welker's agent did what he did because Welker told him too. I think his issues with Bill got the better of him.

I think the old "Patriots way" can easily * most veterans off. At the end for even a little difference Pats do not like to negotiate since they want to show their toughness. Players generally have already compromised a lot to stay with the team but at this kind of moments they'd take the pride and leave.

  6. I have a feeling Welker will have a big game Sunday.  But I also feel Julian Edelman will have a big game too since he's also a good slot receiver and since that Broncos' safety shot his mouth off bad mouthing Edleman.  Dumb move.

At this point in both players' careers I will take Edelman over Welker and I'm not saying that as a Patriots fan.  I would take Edelman because he doesn't have the concussion issue and hopefully won't and he doesn't seem to drop those ever important balls that Welker drops.  Edelman is better at returning punts and is a little more versatile.  Edelman has over 100 receptions this year.  Edelman will also command less money in the open free market too.  I think Edelman can be had for less than Welker.  Edelman has been a little more dependable and reliable in 2013 than Welker has.

There's more pressure on Welker too.  Broncos are around 4.5 point favorites as of right now.

I doubt Welker will play well against his old team since his old boss would never allow him to beat them. They'd rather other Denver playmakers beat them if it ends up that way. I watched the replay of Denver at Pats and obviously Welker was under huge pressure and did not play well.

For most slot receivers the younger the better since they continuously take punishments at the middle of the field, which can wear them down over years. Welker might be special, but it still won't last longer than maybe next year.

  7. The last 5 games between Manning and Brady, the home team won.

I don't get it when people are saying Denver run defense is not good since they conceded some yardage to SD in week 15. The key to SD's success in that game was their continuous 3rd down conversions through the air such that they could keep running the ball. When they could not convert, things went ugly and their running game alone could not carry them against Denver.

Blount is compared with Lynch by the media, which is ridiculous. Colts have historically struggled against physical running backs and they made guys like Shawn Greene, Blount, Tolbert, Hillis look like unstoppable monsters. Denver should have no problem stopping him, which is also doable by most NFL defenses other than Colts' D.

  8. For anyone who wondered what happened between him and the Lions, twitter is reporting that the Lions have their focus on Jim Caldwell.

Really could Jim Caldwell really help Stafford? Yes he was Manning's QB coach but it was Manning.

  9. Yeah I wonder if he is just like who cares at this point. They have already been killing him for his post-season record so what does it matter if he loses another? He did seem loose. I was happy for him.

I always think Manning tended to be too careful in playoffs. The only good playoff games he played in my opinion was the 06 AFCCG when they were down 21-6 against Pats, and the other was 09 AFCCG when they were down 17-3 against Jets. He just had nothing to lose then and started to play ball.

  10. Give them a week they will figure this out. Players don't just go out and perform when they were not prepared to take the field. Webster could play nickel and Bailey move to outside.

On the other hand Pats do not have a wideout as good as Allen. They may have a few good slot receivers but Denver DBs should have less problem matching up with them.

If Denver and Seattle advance, Seattle has no WR of Allen's caliber either.

Only thing that made me curious was why they did not put DRC on Allen going toward the end. Obviously SD had no other good receivers that needed the top-corner coverage.

  11. I loved this comment from Manning. It was ridiculous for the media not to let him enjoy beating SD for one moment. They went right to Brady and the Pats. I hope he had his Bud Light, maybe a few.

I also love his comment but mainly because it showed for the first time in many years he was playing loose in the playoff, which could make him more dangerous. It's not coincidence that he delivered the ball precisely at the crunch time to close the deal. He was enjoying the game more than ever. Watch out Pats!

  12. This was one game that Peyton could easily lose in the past - Lots of missed opportunities and defense started to melt down toward the end of the game. The different was he was playing loose and delivered. And obviously he was enjoying playing the ball. This was a good sign going forward.

  13. I don't think another SB win puts him as the GOAT either as his playoff record would be 12-11 with 2 rings and a SB loss. Probably puts him closer to Elway but behind Montana and Brady still.

If he wins another SB he will be the greatest since his regular season success is way too dominant and the Indy team he had was much weaker than Brady's earlier teams with which he won the 3 SBs.

  14. QB is right.....DJ Fluker......He'll see a lot of bltzes and stunts..because Denver cant get to the passer with a 4-man rush.

The very big rookie has to hold up..and run block well

    Orlando Franklin...RT for Denver...(see Fluker)

.. a better run blocker than a pass blocker..he has to do well...the right side is Denver's strong side...the Broncos have to run right at SD early

...to blow up their 'time of posessiion' scheme

If you keep the defense on the field in the light air in Denver, they wear down

I also thought about why Denver never tried to control the ball - run through two RBs and get short passes. This used to be effective when Peyton was at Indy since our D used to be known and bend but don't break and consumed lots of time on the field. Peyton was using a ball-control offense to get our D off the field and rest.

  15. I agree. Champ will have the biggest impact. Webster got abused by Brady too during that comeback when DRC went out. The kid just cannot play yet in the NFL. If champ can practically shut down whoever he covers (Allen or one of the TEs), then the Broncos will blow out the chargers imo.

DRC is playing at a very high level and Chris Harris is an above average NFL starter. I can see DRC matched up with Allen and Harris the other guy. If they suffer no injury Bailey will match up with a TE or Eddie Royal/Vincent Brown, but this could be the key match up for stopping Chargers' long drives.

Against Pats if DRC were a little smarter not to try too hard to catch Brady's desperate throw ending the 1st half, I can see Denver win that game easily.

  16. I agree. Champ will have the biggest impact. Webster got abused by Brady too during that comeback when DRC went out. The kid just cannot play yet in the NFL. If champ can practically shut down whoever he covers (Allen or one of the TEs), then the Broncos will blow out the chargers imo.

Having an all-pro to play nickel is really a luxury even when he is at the end of his career. When I watched the week 15 replay I did not feel Denver's run defense was particularly worse, but many 3rd down conversions were given up by the inexperienced rookie in the air, which played right into Chargers game plan.

  17. Keenan Allen or Ladarius Green for the Chargers.  I have this gut instinct that our offensive game might have some twists to it.

Champ Bailey for the Broncos.  Fresh legs - burning desire will make him more dangerous than usual.

For Chargers I feel Gates will have a nice game. Last year he gave Denver lots of troubles in their regular season meetings. Don't ignore the old dogs.
