  1. Ah, I see what you are saying. Perhaps more pressure with Luck in that regard had Luck beaten Brady in NE for the playoffs which Manning never did. But I think if you asked Manning, he would rather have faced the Colts for this game then the Pats just in terms of match ups.

Technically yes. But emotionally he is more comfortable playing Pats than Colts I bet.

  2. I would agree with you on the bolded it they were not playing the Pats. I think the fact that Manning is playing an undermanned Pats team adds more pressure then last week. But that being said, Denver won't lose because of nerves or pressure, if they do lose it will be because the Pats outplayed them unless Manning throws some picks which I am not anticipating. In fact, I think it will be a clean game unlike the TO fest in Nov in Foxboro.

Yes I also anticipate the game to be "normal" this time.

I cannot agree on the pressure part, since can you imagine the pressure if Manning is playing a "red hot" Andrew Luck who Colts brought in to replace him and the guy were supposed to have beaten Brady in Pats house to get there in his second year as a pro, which Manning cannot do until now his 16th season?

  3. The best way to maximize Gronk's worth or any player's worth and value is to make sure he comes back healthy and play him a few games and then trade him.  Sort of like what the Celtics I believe are going to do with Rajon Rondo when he comes back.

I would trade Gronk at this point for a high 2nd round pick too if I couldn't first get a 1st rounder.

Then it will take the team gut to make the decision if he is playing well. They will need to have a plan for his replacement and better hope the replacement lives up to the expectation. Not gonna be easy.

  4. I like, trust and respect this Patriots team more than the 2007 Pats team which was made up of more prima donnas and egos.  This Patriots team is similar to the Red Sox that won the world series....a bunch of guys who aren't famous who are trying hard and playing as a team.  This Pats team is more a "team" than their past teams.  Talent is overrated if you play like a selfish individual on a team.

This Pats team now has an established power run game.  This is now the best and most versatile running game the Pats have had under the Belichick/Brady era because they got Blount, Ridley and Vereen.  In fact Blount is more a power runner than Corey Dillon.  If the Pats were to have had this run game back in 2007 they could have won the Super Bowl.  This Pats team is now more dangerous because it allows them to open up the pass.  The Broncos will be forced now to load up the box to try to stop the Pats' run game and Brady can exploit that.  Brady has been missing a run game for years.  Way too much emphasis and pressure in the past was put on Brady's shoulders to carry the team with his arm which made their offense a one dimensional offense.

We'll see but considering so many mediocre RBs had their career days on Colts run defense Blount might be overrated. Shonn Greene burnt Colts every time they played but he was mediocre at best. Peyton Hillis had a terrible season in 2011 with the Browns but his best game of that year was at Indy. That same year Blount at TB struggled whole yr but had his best game against Indy as well. Colts just never matched up well against physical RBs.

  5. I think the Patriots should either trade or not resign Amendola and use the space to bring in another TE or another WR.  Pats still haven't found anyone to take the spot of Aaron Hernandez.

I would trade Gronk for a 1st round draft pick.  Gronk's contract is back loaded so he's going to make more in the next upcoming years.  Gronk has now had around 9 surgeries.

If the Pats can get a draft pick for Gronk I would use that pick on a defensive lineman.

The team that is under the most pressure is the Broncos.  They went all out to bring in Peyton and Welker.  They broke offensive records in the NFL.  Peyton is most likely the MVP.  They were the favorite to win it all going into this year.  Vegas has them favorites over the Pats.  If the Broncos don't win it all then they fall the furthest.

Peyton and Welker are under more pressure than anyone on the Patriots are.

Good call on Amendola and Gronk, but it will take a team like the Raiders to make the trade. Everybody knows Amendola cannot stay on the field, and for Gronk if you are trading your most talented receiver off major injuries people are going to question it or the return won't be pleasant (a late round pick maybe?).

Regarding the pressure yes it will be on the Broncos, but it won't be even close to last week's pressure when they were questioned by almost all talking heads in this country. After getting the first win it will only be easier.

  6. It has nothing to do with "showing their toughness" and everything to do with managing their cap. Welker and his agent vastly over estimated his value on the open market and in actuality what the Patriots had offered him the year before he became a free agent ended up being more than he received from Denver, so he actually lost money by holding out for Free Agency.  This whole idea that the Patriots were cheap or just didn't work with him to spite him is totally false, they offered him a very fair deal, he overestimated his value and then was angry at them for not paying him what he wanted, so he took his ball and went to the Broncos.

Looks like they were smart in their decision, because they got 105 receptions out of Edelman (I guessed around 90-100 in preseason) so he basically matched Welker's production for a fraction of the salary, plus he is younger.

The Patriots don't make decisions based on emotion like fans do, they evaluate a player and what he will do for the team in the FUTURE, not what they did in the past.  It looks like it worked out for them in the end.  There is a good chance that Denver doesn't even honor the 2nd year of Welker's deal and he may hit Free Agency again.  If the Patriots retain, Edelman, they will not be interested in Welker's services.. the team has moved on.

Edelman was never planned as the replacement for Welker. It was Amendola at the beginning.

I do not think they saved anything by signing Amendola to replace Welker. Amendola is younger but he's never had a healthy season and Pats signed him for 5 yrs with 10M guaranteed. This only showed they did not want to give veterans any edge in the negotiation.

Plz remember they did not have a plan for Edelman to replace Welker, and the original plan did not work when Amendola did not show enough reliability, and as expected by everyone outside Pats he went down early in the season. As they had nobody to catch the ball they started to feed Edelman who was the only receiver understanding the system.

Nothing here showed they were proactive at the beginning. Had they been smart they'd sign a different type of receiver to work on the outside, instead of leaving two rookies there and signing another slot WR whose skill set overlaps with their own guy but cannot stay healthy ever since he entered the league.

  7. At the end of the day it is winning the game that matters. Trashing or not it really doesn't matter if Manning go and blow Pats out this time, which I think he is fully capable of considering this is the least talented Pats team in quite a long time.

Manning had little chance winning the earlier ones because he was too young and forcing the ball too hard in Pats backyard. He became more patient and and then his game improved. The latest ones were much closer and it could easily bounce his way if his RBs could hang on to the ball.

On the other hand I always think it is Manning VS Belichick instead of Manning VS Brady. Like the 4th-and-2 it was never Brady's decision.

  8. The photos and stats were facts. The extra comments were just slander.

I don't mind. Last week every talking head was trashing Manning and we all know what happened. Actually I feel Manning plays better when he is trashed :)

And to be fair in the earlier games between the two Manning did hand them the wins like Luck did. But the last two games he played carefully but his RBs fumbled too many times. The ball should bounce back this time.

  9. Now, THIS one is for real.

    http://www.nfl.com/photoessays/09000d5d82bb1bc6?module=HP11_photo_gallery?campaign=Facebook_gallery_BradyManning

Check out the snarky, insulting captions about Manning under most of the photos. What the hell NFL?

Most of them were facts. And the last time Manning won was in 2009 by 1 pt in the 4th-and-2 game.

That said games between them have been close and always down to the last drive since 2006. If the ball has been bouncing toward Brady so many times in a row, it might be a good thing for Manning to get one this time.

  10. You can't judge a draft after one or two seasons

That's why I said we should wait and see what's coming this year. But he needs to be careful on evaluating talents as Luck's rookie contract will expire soon and the team has to take advantage of the freedom before they get tightened up by Luck's next contract.

  11. Right but by and far they have replaced them well either with other FAs or draft picks with the exception of DBs and WRs which they have missed on. If they didn't draft and sign FAs well they would not be contending the way they have every year for the past 13 years.

Not sure how the Pats will fair after Brady. So much depends on who they get to replace him and if Bill stays or not. The first three rings were as much about Brady as the team around him. No Brady=no rings. We all know that in NE.

No I do not think the replacements were up to they veterans' level on almost all positions. The young guys are all significantly worse, especially at DBs. Belichick has better eyes on LBs and they are OK, but you can not compare the current group with the unit of Mike Vrabel and Tedy Bruschi.

The team play in a huge mess of AFC east which hands them 5-6 wins automatically (to this standard I think Colts are also blessed to play Titans and Jags twice each and thus very overrated even with a 11-5 record). After making the playoff Pats were lucky to play a Tebow-led Broncos, an overrated Texans, and an inexperienced Colts teams in the past three years. Otherwise Pats could easily be one-and-done if they had to play Ravens and Steelers or this year's Bengals had they survived Chargers.

  12. He nailed it in 2012 draft but missed most in 2013 draft. A normal thing for an inexperienced manager. He is not the genius many thought to be after 2012, but also not as bad as the OP says. The upcoming draft will tell more about him. But with a franchise QB like Luck, it is very hard for a GM to go too wrong.

  13. I think Denver will beat NE at home.

Seattle will win the SB running away. The Hawks are just too balanced on both sides of the ball.

Manning and Brady are great but niether one has the personnel to play with Seattle.

I would say Denver and Seattle would be the most intriguing matchup with Denvers weapons on offense.

In the preseason game between Seahawks and Broncos, in which Seattle were playing at playoff mentality while Denver was trying different things out, Manning was having no problem moving the chain in the noise, while Hilman had two fumbles (one returned from Seattle endzone all the way to Denver's for a TD) and JThomas had another to get the game out of their hand. Even Seattle's defense admitted that they could not stop Manning.

On a neutral field Seattle would not play as well as they do at home, and the difference is significant.

  14. That's what I don't like:

"Indianapolis Colts quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen could be the top choice for the offensive coordinator job with the Detroit Lions. Christensen worked together with head coach Jim Caldwell in Indianapolis."

    http://subscribers.footballguys.com/apps/news.php#888991?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

I hope it is just guessing and nothing serious.

Edit: it is just guessing indeed. I hope Christensen stays.

QB coach to OC is a huge step and nobody can resist it, and think about the weapons they have in Megatron and Reggie Bush.

  15. I smell another Detroit disaster.

I don't think he lasts 4 years in Detroit.

Hell no. Two years maximum as they will be competing with Bears and Packers and I do not see them win.

If they think Caldwell is a good QB coach since he "coached" Manning, well good luck on that...

  16. I think that's more wishful thinking.  The Patriots since Belichick has been there have not valued good talent when they have it in the secondary.  Ty Law and Lawyer Milloy were from the Parcell's and Pete Carroll years.  I hope Talib stays even if it's a 4 year deal.

Patriots should resign Edelman and I don't think it will cost the Patriots too much money as they know and I think most other NFL teams know he's a product of the Patriots system.  I think his value on the open free market if he decides to test the free market will be less than Welker's.  I doubt any team gives Edelman the same amount they offered Welker.

Pats should let Edelman stay since Amendola has not proven to be a reliable target. Edelman pretty much saved the season for Pats given their injury issues. The FA market for slot receivers is not that hot either.

On the other hand Edelman should understand that he is a product of the system. If he leaves there will be nowhere he can catch more than 50 passes.

  17. You are confusing two separate issues here. The first is NE's approach to aging vets and the second is their ability to draft well. The majority of players they have moved on from that were aging have not had great careers post-Pats and would prove the Pats were correct in moving on instead of paying them top contracts for dwindling production. In terms of their drafting, Bill has definitely missed with DBs and WRs but that is pretty much par for the course of most GMs across the league. Evaluating draft talent may be the hardest job in the NFL and one that is generally a 50/50 proposition.

I was not confusing two issues since they have to be related to each other. You can only afford to lose the veterans if you can draft well to replace them. It used to be the case but recently they replace them with sub-par pieces and the team is not very good. That is why I do not like their future after Brady and I do not think Brady will win another SB. His earlier SBs had more to do with his great team than his own brilliance.

In the part of the veterans not doing as good as they did with Pats, you have to notice how many of them actually went to bad teams, and how many went to other contenders. Welker is now competing with Pats for a spot in the SB, which cannot be compared with Seymore spending a good part of his career in the Black Hole, although Seymore was one of the best DLs for Raiders for a while.

  18. Yeah that is the talk right now. Pats are playing with house money on the road to boot.

If the Pats do win, I want Seattle. Don't like San Fran at all. I think they are the best team left.

If Denver advance I want them to play Seattle as well. Kaep already had one SB game under his belt and Denver's secondary will have no answer to the combo of Boldin-Crabtree-Davis.

In playoff games experience is very important.

  19. Another item of note...

In the Pats-Broncos game, I can't shake the feeling that 99% of the pressure is on Denver. If the Patriots lose, they'll say, "Well... it was a severely flawed team, the only reason they got as far as they did is the Belichick-Brady duo." Whereas if Denver loses, it'll be viewed as a history-making team failing to live up to expectations that they started building on opening weekend.

Fair or not, that's how this one seems to be shaping up. As a Pats fan I truly feel like they have nothing to lose here.

No after the SD game nothing can pressure Denver as much. They are starting to play loose and this is very dangerous for the opponents.

Although Denver broke the record they also conceded 3 losses which kind of released their pressure somewhat. This is a different situation from Pats faced in their 18-1 season.
