  1. My opinion going into this week was that (barring a florish of sacks by Chubb the last few weeks) it was between Derwin and Leonard.  Problem for Leonard is that he will have had zero national games (the NE game is the one he missed), while James had his best game by far on national TV.  He impressed a lot of voters that day.  This week helped Darius, as James was invisible on Thursday and ended with five tackles (vs. 11 tackles for Leonard against a well-watched Dallas team).  It was a good weekend for Leonard’s chances...

  2. 1) SI's Andy Benoit gave the Colts a D+ for their first-round pick of Quenton Nelson (the worst grade he gave in the round).  His logic was this: "…have you seen this defense?  It's only true three-down players are Malik Hooker and corner Quincy Wilson - and both have played just half a rookie season in the NFL.  Every other player, save for maybe edge men Jabaal Sheard and John Simon if we're being generous, is a situational piece.  And with (the new scheme), it's hard to envision many situations where those guys would work."

    2) This'll have to be a paraphrase, because I haven't been able to find this in writing anywhere.  I think it must of been said by Matt Williamson on his podcast, but I remember it pretty well.  "The Colts are five defensive players short of just being terrible."

Wonder how these guys' analysis skills are working out for them...

He was my favorite dark horse FA to make the team. Played every snap yesterday and I think he did a credible job.

He was my favorite too.  Every year I look up the Pro Day workouts of our UCFAs and put them in order of how excited I am about them.  Many prove to be better at running than playing football.  This year I ordered them 1) Odum 2) Robert Jackson 3) Chris Cooper 4)Skai Moore 5)Laulile.  (And so on). Really didn’t believe in Ismael, and not that much in Moore.  That’s why no NFL team employs me...

  4. It’ll be interesting to see if they go with Haeg or Boehm at center, assuming Kelly misses some games.  They gave Haeg a lot of time at center in TC, but Boehm has been available and healthy (and practicing) ever since we signed him...

How I'd rank based on priority:

    1) EDGE
    2) NT
    3) CB
    4) SS
    5) SAM

    6) FS

Like your format.  Well done.  Here's how I'd rank them.  The last five games has convinced me that we need a bookend DE to provide more pressure on the QB.  However, with the fantastic DTs in this class, seems like we can address the NT position in Round 1 with one of the freaks like Christian Wilkins who can stop the run really well, but get pretty good pass rush too.   I've been an Odum fan ever since we signed him after the draft and I got a glimpse at his workout numbers.   We'll certainly get a good look at him this weekend, particularly if Hooker can't go.  I think Franklin, Adams, and Moore are versatile enough to play any of our LB positions...

  6. With the promotion of Killings, we’ve got seven on the active roster now, and only Hairston was listed as injured yesterday (and he was still a limited participant).  Just added Jalen Collins to the PS too.  Can’t help but wonder if there’s  a reason here...  We gonna healthy scratch Wilson and cut him if someone else steps up?

I’ll have to wait until the combine for the measurements on Polite. But so far it seems Ballard likes length in his DEs. Turray is 6’5”, Basham was 6’4”, And Basham is 6’3”. All have 33” arms as well.

They’ve got Polite listed at 6’2” and that could really mean 6’1”.

Hmmm, I hadn’t noticed the trend on our DEs, but Sheard and Phillips are our shortest at 6’3” right now.  I’ll have to think about that.  As for Brown, I kinda had him comped to Keke Coutee, who had similar size and speed.  They definitely get dinged by scouts for their size.  Difficult to say where he ends up, but an 11/6/2018 board on Fanspeak had him available for this pick.  You could be right though - he has almost 900 yards and 7 TDs already...

  8. Ballard has said that he’s saving cap space to re-sign keepers.  I see one from this year’s FAs - Glowinski (let’s keep the OL band together!).  The rest are 1-yr deals.  Only outside FA is Ronald Darby, who gets a big deal.

    FA: Ronald Darby, CB, Eagles

Re-sign: Glowinski, Hunt, Grant, Ridgeway, Antonio Garcia, Desir, Boehm, Good

Let walk: Geathers, Slauson, Woods, Mitchell, Turbin, Goode

    Draft:

    1) Jachai Polite, DE, Florida.  Bookend for opposite side of Turay.

    2) Rashard Lawrence, NT, LSU.  Athletic 5 -star recruit who slides in a strong DT class.

    2) Lavert Hill, CB, Michigan.  Undersized dynamic player of the ball.

    3) Garrett Bradbury, OL, NC St.  Interior OL who can be top depth.

    4) Marquise Brown, WR, Oklahoma.  TY type receiver for the slot.

    4) Juan Thornhill, S, Virginia.  Can back up Farley in the box.

    5) Joe Dineen, LB, Kansas.  Tackle machine who’s improving in coverage to back up Franklin at SAM.

    6) Kyle Kempf, QB, Iowa St.  Rough recent injury past, but he’s developable with size and accuracy.

    7) Qadree Ollison, RB, Pitt.  Big, short-yardage back.

does not really matter as long as luck is not hurt again this game is a big loss for us we dont have the talent to compete with them

Wow, despite the fact that we don’t have the talent to compete with them, we knifed right through on our first drive...

  10. Very true, but I think our DL has a pretty good chance against their OL.  I wouldn’t give their OL some kind of automatic victory.  I think Kemoko, Ridgeway, Autry, and Sheard are all capable of dialing up some pressure against a pretty bad line.  Heck, for that matter, I think that our OL can slow down Autry...and their DEs are good, but not unstoppable forces.  I think the trench game will be a hotly contested back and forth...

  11. Of the ridiculousness I’ve been reading about the upcoming game, the silliest is the common notion that CIN has a big advantage on both sides of the line.  I think we have a clear advanage on the OL.  I go position by position:

LT: AC and Cordy Glenn are both league average kind of LTs at this point in their careers.  EVEN

LG:  Clint Boling is an average LG, and QN is a generational prospect in his rookie year.  Sorry, the PC thing is to point out that he hasn’t played a meaningful snap, but realistically BIG ADVANTAGE COLTS

C: Both 1st round centers, but ours is going into his 3rd year and theirs is going into his 1st game.  Expect Kelly to look more like the end of his rookie year than any of the injured games he played last year.  He was a better prospect than Price coming out, also.  ADVANTAGE COLTS

RG:  Alex Redmond, a Colt cast-off from the days where we had noone starts for CIN, much to Bengal fans’ chagrin.  Slauson has been a pleasant surprise.  ADVANTAGE COLTS

RT:  Haeg (I guess) vs. Hart.  Both teams’ fans are scared about the RTs.  We’ll call it EVEN

So, I came up with three positions for the Colts and two draws.  Only thing I could have done differently was give the Bengals the LT position based upon AC’ s current injury.  But I think he’ll be fine Sunday...

  12. It got worse today, as Sporting News’ eight (or so) experts all picked the Bengals (but the computer model and the coin flip picked the Colts).  Same experts unanimously picked Colts for last in AFC South.  However, BR actually picked the Colts in Week 1, giving the 3 points to CIN.  Final tally from what I read is something like 19 experts pick CIN and one picks IND!  I suspect we’ll be reading about the “suprising Colts” or “disappointing Bengals” come Monday, rather than how they were wrong...

  13. It’s funny - we are favored by 3 points, but the eleven predictions by experts I saw online all picked the Bengals to win.  I tend to believe odds more than experts, since they spring from people actually risking their almighty $ (rather than people worrying about defending their picks or covering their arses).  I think we’ll win, and here’s where everyone is going wrong IMHO:

    1) People are so stuck on the lack of depth in the WR corps, that they fail to identify that the quartet of Hilton, Ebron, Doyle, and Rogers is a fantastic set of receivers.  Heck, throw in Swoope.

    2) Same on the OL.  No backup LT?  Who cares?  AC is very good and back at 100%.  RG was disappointing?  Well, it’ll be fine with Slauson.  And RT - the crap we saw in preseason was largely with Howard and Webb.  How is that relevant now?  I think it’ll be Smith, and he should help the run game (and we’ll see about pass pro).

    3) Everyone has forgot how good Luck is.

    4) The D is billed as bad.  But it has talent across the board.  Young talent is prone to mistakes, but also splash plays.  If those splash plays lead to turn-overs, we can have games that the D actually wins for us.  I think we really won’t know what to expect from the D on a weekly basis, but calling it just bad is lazy and inaccurate.

    5) The bengals really aren’t that good, and Dalton has become the definition of a marginal QB.  (He’s supposed to be the NFL version of the Mendoza line...)
