I've been watching the NFL for a long time. Long enough to know that the team with the most wins and a 4 game win streak has the control at this time. Since this thread is about the Colts chances, the Texans have a 2 game lead over the Colts and have won the head to head matchup. They currently have control.
I specifically commented on your ignorant statement that the Texans are playing good ball and have control of the division. I made no commentary on the Colts chances.
They aren't playing good ball, if you would bother to watch them at all, and they certainly don't have control of the division on week 7 of the NFL season.

Houston has control. They are a game up and have won 4 in a row. They are playing pretty good ball and have a win over the Colts.
No, they don't, and no, they aren't.
Is this your first year watching the NFL? It's week 7, not week 17. A one game lead at this point means absolutely nothing.
Eeking out one score wins over sub .500 teams is not "playing pretty good ball". They are, literally, 3 plays away from being 1-6, and have looked unimpressive a vast majority of this season.

Very slim chance. Houston would need to falter while we would need to win 7 of 9. That would only get us to 9-7.
In no way shape or form does Houston's medicore team have any kind of control. 2 games seperate all 4 teams with 9 left to play. It is, literally, anyone's division to win.
-
Why not? The division is spectacularly mediocre once again. 9-7 and an asskicking at the hands of KC or NE is the ultimate fate of the 2018 AFC South victor.

Skai Moore became expendable once Walker started playing better, IMO. Skai Moore, on run D was not stout, from the limited times I saw him in pre-season. Skai Moore probably could have come in as a coverage backer specialist but what good is coverage if you cannot stop the run on the first 2 downs to force a favorable 3rd down?
Maybe they bring him back to PS later?
Exactly. Dude was not drafted for a reason, and waived today for a reason.

Why does anyone care that Haeg went to IR? All I heard during the offseason is how much he sucks. Now he's suddenly irreplaceable.

Was it Grigson or Ballard who cut him? If it was Grigs than we all know he was inept at recognizing talent so not surprised, if it was Ballard than also not surprised because he seems to just want to get rid of all Grigsons picks no matter what haha. Sucks that a former 7th round pick of ours is lighting it up with another team though..
If Grigson cut him, it's because he sucked.
If Ballard cut him, it was for a very valid reason, like "he didn't fit our scheme" or something. -
You know who had great arm strength? Jamarcus Russell
You know who didn't? Joe Montana

Ok, specific examples then: The underthrown deep post route to TY in the Washington game that drew a PI. The deep throw to TY against the Eagles in the first half that was severely underthrown drawing another PI (Should have been a TD). The Out-Route to TY that was almost picked off by McLeoud that hung in the air for an eternity. During the potential go ahead drive against Philly he underthrew TY again drawing another PI and sparking the announcers to say "The Colts best offense today has been the underthrow to Hilton".
He's barely thrown it downfield. There are no conclusions to be drawn whatsoever about his arm strength.....only speculation. Calm yourself down.

And the reason for that is?
That's an entirely different discussion.
You claimed to have seen an "extreme lack of velocity" on his deep throws. So my question to you is: what deep throws?
-
20 hours ago, Boiler_Colt said:
I mean, I expected rusty, but I expected that to be with timing and accuracy. I did not expect the extreme lack of velocity on deep throws. And it seemed to get worse the longer the game went on. If you can't make deep throws and sideline out-routes with velocity, you don't have an NFL arm and that is indeed terrifying to me. We have no idea if it will ever come back or if he's Chad Pennington now.
He's barely attempted any deep throws.

He's going to have a long day because Graham said so? Okay.

I wouldn't label the trio of Ballard/Dodds/Hogan geniuses just yet. But, with thier previous track records of building (through the draft) the early/mid 2000's Bears, and the 2010's Chiefs and Seahawks PLUS what they've done here in 2017 and 2018, they are on thier way.
With 19 picks the last 2 years they have 7 starters, 8 rotational/Contributing players, 2 on IR that would likely be added to the rotational players at the very least, 1 playing for another team and 1 on the PS.
Plus with excellent scouting they've got upwards of 6-7 starters and/or rotational/Contributing waiver wire pickups and udfa's.
That's not counting the 6 solid veteran free agents that are starting as well.
Say what you will about the lack of spending in Free Agency (currently) but this team is being built brick by brick by a Front Office that is 100% in tune with what ingredients the Coaching Staff needs to make thier schemes work! That, in and if itself is far more important than just pure talent alone.
Take a look below at how this FO has stacked two off-seasons together and with one more off-season I firmly believe the talent they are bringing in will lead the Colts to the promised land once again!
2017
Round 1, pick 15: Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State (starter & trending up)
Round 2, pick 46: Quincy Wilson, CB, Florida (part time starter when healthy, but trending up)
Round 3, pick 80: Tarell Basham, EDGE, Ohio (relagated to ST's, perhaps another Jerry Hughes?)
Round 4, pick 137: Zach Banner, G, USC (cut during camp in 17, currently w/Steelers)
Round 4, pick 143: Marlon Mack, RB, South Florida (starter but trending up)
Round 4, pick 144: Grover Stewart, DT, Albany State (rotational player but trending up as a starter for Woods next year)
Round 5, pick 158: Nate Hairston, CB, Temple (starter and trending up)
Round 5, pick 161: Anthony Walker Jr., LB, Northwestern (starter and trending up)UDFA/Waiver Wire/Free Agent
Sheard - FA starter
Woods - FA starter
Hunt - FA starter
Moore II - Waivers (starter and trending up)
Sanchez - UDFA (great rookie season and trending up)
Glowinski - Waivers (solid depth)
Desir - Waivers (part time starter but trending up)
Brissett - Trade (excellent backup, trending up for more draft picks next year)
Daniels - UDFA (decent rookie year, used as trade bait this year)
Travis - Waivers (was trending up until torn acl in 4th preseason game - current IR)
Kaaya - Signed from Panthers PS ( servicable backup - currently on IR)
2018
Round 1, pick 6: Quentin Nelson, G, Notre Dame (starter trending up)
Round 2, pick 36: Darius Leonard, LB, South Carolina State (starter trending up)
Round 2, pick 37: Braden Smith, G, Auburn (current backup - stock even)
Round 2, pick 52: Kemoko Turay, DE, Rutgers (rotational player but trending up)
Round 2, pick 64: Tyquan Lewis, DE, Ohio State (was having a great camp until toe injury - currently on IR designated to return - stock even)
Round 4, pick 104: Nyheim Hines, RB, NC State (rotational player and trending up)
Round 5, pick 159: Daurice Fountain, WR, Northern Iowa (project player currently on PS - stock even)
Round 5, pick 169: Jordan Wilkins, RB, Ole Miss (gem of a pick and trending up)
Round 6, pick 185: Deon Cain, WR, Clemson (was pushing for a starting spot until torn acl in preseason opener - stock remains high)
Round 7, pick 221: Matthew Adams, LB, Houston (solid ST's contributor - stock even)
Round 7, pick 235: Zaire Franklin, LB, Syracuse (solid ST's contributor - stock even)
UDFA/Waiver Wire/Free Agent
Slauson - FA starter
Autry - FA (kind of a "meh" beginning, but is a starter)
Grant - FA starter (nothing flashy, just makes plays)
S. Moore - UDFA (in the LB mix with Leonard and Walker - trending up)
Odum - UDFA (solid ST's contributor)
Muhammad - Waivers (started 2nd game and secured the edge well and got good push - trending up)
Hewitt - Waivers (ST's contributor and best blocking TE on roster)
Pascal - Waivers (earned that 4th WR spot and returner duties)
Pipkins - Trade (undetermined)
Ishmael - UDFA (earned a PS spot and has potential)
Ward - Waivers (earned a 53 man spot in a week AND had a sack in 1st game - trending up)
C. Moore - Waivers (undetermined)
Williams - Trade (undetermined)
Oh yeah and for those that bring Grigson up as Executive of the year..... I will give him T.Y. Hilton (as his best actual draft pick), Geathers, Doyle and the trio of Kelly/Clarke/Haeg. Luck was a no brainer that any one of us coulda made.
Compare the depth of the drafts and how many contributions we're getting from the 1st round thru the 7th round. We have true talent evaluators now!
Well done sir. I notice when you make some pretty solid contributions on here, by the way.

Doesn't matter as he backs up Nelson and Slauson but he's younger, stronger and more takented than Vujnovich ever was AND was a capable starter in Seattle for a couple years. Plus - he hasn't stepped on any teammates feet (yet) and have them go on season ending IR. That's why
I hear you.....and a-freaking-men on the bulleted points.

I couldn't be happier with Frank Reich and the staff that he and Ballard put together.
Also, those first and second year draft picks are meshing well together with a blend of free agents (Slauson, Ebron, Grant, Sheard, Woods) and waiver wire pickups (Moore, Muhammad, Desir, Glowinski).
I fear that Basham is turning into Jerry Hughes and the moment we trade/waive him he'll take off.
But - even if that happens Ballard will replace him with a Muhammad or a Phillips that will contribute.
Glowinski? What a weird example. Has he even played a snap this year?

It’s actually interesting that Green remains in the fold. A physically talented banger that’s been way too injury prone so far. But hey, patience, why not? I have no problem with him beingvretained onIR,to have another go of it.
I do. He's not good, never will be good, and any spot he might take anywhere on this team, be it IR, practice squad, whatever....is a complete waste of resources.

I don't.

I’m guessing Clark on the left, Haeg on the right with plenty of three TE sets using Hewitt to help the LT.
As as long as Luck gets the ball out quick, it may be okay.
I'm not. I'm guessing Castonzo on the left, Haeg on the right.

Come Haeg can't be that bad at C or the coaches wouldn't play him there. If he is Slauson can and has played C on Sundays. He's the second best C on the team There won't be an issue at C.
It wasn't a horrible move that anyone will regret to cut Bond He's a 6'1 299lbs pure pivot that was maybe the 3rd C on the roster. He's going to have a hard time catching on anywhere as just a back up C. Position is important. Look at our roster we don't have a player on the OL who just plays one spot.
The Bond situation was nothing like Shipley. Shipley was a stupid move in a long line of stupid moves by that other guy. Ship not only could play G he was the best C we had on the roster. The only things those things have in common is a guy got cut.
Haeg played T in college and that's his best spot in the pro's. He may make a career of being jack of many trades but if he's ever going to be a starter it'll be at RT. He's more athletic then strong. He lacks the anchor to move inside full time. I'm interested to see what he can do with a solid G inside next to him.
This roster hasn't had a solid starting G not named Mewhort in a minute. Remember Vujo playing at LG all year? Haeg and Good have filled in prior to that Thornton was in and out. Thats why we blew the whole draft wasted picks etc by taking 2 starting caliber G's so early. We now have the guys so Luck doesn't continue to live with pressure in his face every time he drops back. Solid play inside will help both T's too.
The depth chart is unofficial. If something happened to Kelly and the staff took 5 minutes to think about it my guess is Slauson moves to C and Smith to RG. That makes the most since. Smith and Slauson are battling for RG so moving the other guy in should be easy enough and Slauson has been solid at C when he's played there on Sundays. Let's hope Kelly stays healthy and we don't have to start anyone else at C.
This is exactly what would happen.

I like how you suddenly added the qualifier "at the moment".
You seem to think "current division leader after week 7" and "in control" are the same thing.
So if the point you are trying to make is that Houston is leading the division after week 7 by one game (over a team that already beat them and has a superior divisional record), then I agree. Thanks for the newsflash.
The Houston Texans are in control of nothing divisionally long term though. Neither is any other team in the NFL, save the LA Rams maybe.
