  1. Bingo.  At this point, KC and DEN have a strangle hold on the #1 seed.  They play each other one more time.  So one of them will automatically get another win, which means that whoever wins will need to lose at least 3 games of the remaining 5 and we'd pretty much have to win out.  If we lost one game, it could not be against KC, provided KC beat DEN next time.  Not that its impossible, but its unlikely.  It is much more likely for us to get a #2 seed if DEN beats NE.  That way we would just simply have to keep pace with NE.  A much easier task.

Well, that might be overstating it slightly, since we get to play KC. So we'd essentially need to make up 2 games on Denver and/or 1 game on KC PLUS a win over KC.

It's still very unlikely, but the point is, it's still possible. Although I'm still rooting for Denver next week to try to solidify the bye.

  2. Toler has been solid, not great, but the pass defense overall is noticeably better when he's on the field. He seems to compliment Davis well. Fact is that in the 3 games Toler has been out we've given up 700+ yards and 6 TDs with 0 interceptions. In the 7 games he played, we've given up 8 TDs and come up with 8 interceptions. Also, all 3 of those games without Toler are in our top 5 games in most passing yards giving up this year (the other 2 being the Broncos and Dolphins). Let me reiterate: without Toler, we have allowed Case Keenum, Kellen Clemens, and Ryan Fitzpatrick more success than Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, Terrell Pryor, and Phillip Rivers had against us WITH Toler.

  3. Spikes-R-Us had a buy one, get one free deal on their "Disruptor 5000X" product line of spikes.

See, Luck is a smart guy. He uses his EXTENSIVE VOCABULARY at the line of scrimmage, he CAPITALIZES on opponents mistakes, and when he scores, he likes to properly PUNCTUATE the event.

That's 2 jokes for the price of one, I'll be here all week folks.

  4. Would a first round exit really shock anyone?

That depends. Maybe not "shock", but I'd be fairly surprised if we lost a first round playoff home game to the Jets or Titans or Browns. Hell, even though we lost to them I'd be surprised if we lost to the Dolphins.

Of course, I think it's rather imperative we keep playing for at least the 3 seed, even if we can't make our way into a bye (which isn't entirely out of the question since Cincy is kinda mediocre and New England's schedule isn't exactly a cakewalk with Carolina, Denver, Houston, Cleveland, Miami, Baltimore, and Buffalo on the slate). This is a season where you do NOT want to be the 4 seed in the AFC, because that means you're going to have to play the Broncos or Chiefs.

  5. Mike Florio is saying...

..."Walden could be suspended for multiple games.

We’ll all find out more about it on Monday or Tuesday"

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/11/17/league-realizes-walden-should-have-been-ejected/

FWIW I just posted this on that article:

Eh, all three of those incidents cited are probably worse than what Walden did, in that they were more deliberately vicious. What Walden did was definitely stupid and inconsiderate, but I don’t think it rises to the level of actually grabbing a helmet and swinging it full force at a guy’s head, or stomping on a guy’s head with.

Not that I’d be that surprised if he gets a 1 game suspension, but let’s not act like what he did is on the level of what Haynesworth, or even Smith, did.

In any case, I could also cite the incident wherein when the Colts played the Broncos and Kevin Vickerson very clearly, as the video shows, aimed a punch to the already-injured knee of Samson Satele, and he only got a fine. That seems to me to be more potentially damaging than what Walden did. It’s not like Walden reared back and laid into Walker.

He should have been ejected, but I’m not convinced he gets suspended.

BTW that's supposed to be "stomping on a guy's head with your cleats", I got a bit ahead of myself posting that and there's no edit button.

  6. Well, he's on pace for 59/702/5 after going 26/281/2 last year.

Hey, remember back when you all were talking about how he was a bust and I posted all those rookie season stats of elite/HOF TEs throughout history to demonstrate that rookie TEs tend to do poorly in terms of receiving?  I'd like a pat on the back now please.

So, just for sake of comparison, Tony Gonzalez from his rookie season to his second season went from 33/368/2 to 59/621/2.  Now, FWIW, a lot of top-tier TEs actually had a bigger jump than Fleener projects to have from the first to second season (Sharpe, Graham, Gronk, Witten, Gates, etc., all in the 80+/900+ range or better), but I'm not saying, and never said, Fleener will be a HOFer, just that significant statistical jumps in the second year is the norm for TEs (and anyway, if Gonzalez had a similar jump to Fleener, let's not rule anything out).  Plus if Fleener keeps up his level of production from the past 4 games to the end of the season, he'll be looking at more like 70 receptions and 800 yards or so.

  7. Wow crazy similarities. What's Luck's WPA rank this year?

Lower than Brady, 8th per game and 7th overall.  Maybe indicative of it being more of a passing league... but also might be indicative of the QB pool being better this year than in 2003.  This year we've got Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Stafford, Wilson, Rivers, Luck, Ryan, and Foles all up there in WPA; in 2003, aside from Brady and Manning, the top WPA guys included Green, McNair, Kitna, Plummer, Garcia, Bulger, and Delhomme.  Not terrible QBs I guess, but since Favre didn't even sniff the top 10 that year, really only Manning and Brady as HOF guys in that group.  This year you could say Manning, Brady, Rodgers, and Brees are solid-to-sure HOF candidates, and then Luck and Wilson are too young to judge anyway, and Ryan, Stafford, and Rivers all have to be considered better than most of that 2003 list.  So I think that the difference in ranking is just due to 2003 being a pretty miserable year in terms of the NFL QB landscape.  The 2004 NFL draft with Manning, Roethlisberger, and Rivers started changing all that.

  8. Stats don't explain the whole story with Luck. His stats would be a whole lot better with probably 30 other offensive lines.

Oh, I agree, that's kind of the purpose behind this comparison - plus, Brady had that 4-INT game against the Bills in week 1 of 2003 which was even worse than Luck's game against the Rams last week.  Brady had 7 of his 12 INTs in 2 games, both losses, in 2003, Luck has had 3 of his 6 in one game, a bad loss.  FWIW it doesn't account for Luck being a better runner, but the point is, in terms of statistics and late-game heroics, Luck this year has a lot of similarities to Brady in 2003.  Brady hadn't completely developed as the QB he ultimately became at that point (even though they were winning Super Bowls, because they had a very good team top-to-bottom), but according to advancednflstats.com, he had a WPA/game of 0.19 (total WPA of 3.54 for the season) in 2003, 3rd and 4th in the league respectively.  Guess what Luck's WPA/game this year is?  Yep, it's 0.19.

  9. Posted this on another forum, thought you guys might want to see it.  If you think of anyone else notable in the past with stats as similar to Luck as these, please contribute.

I still see a lot of people online criticizing Andrew Luck because his stats aren't crazy good (they are good, just not totally-bonkers kinda good). So, if you project his passing stats out to 16 games, I would say that the best historical comp to him would actually be 2003 Tom Brady (and keep in mind that the Colts can lock up the division pretty early, so it's possible Luck may sit in game 17, bringing the stats even more in line, since Luck projects just a bit higher than Brady in throws and yards). Check it:

    2003 Tom Brady: 317/527 (60.2%), 3620 yards (6.9 YPA, 11.4 YPC), 23 TD, 12 INT, 85.9 PR
    2011 Luck (proj.): 330/555 (59.5%), 3888 yards (7.0 YPA, 11.8 YPC), 22 TD, 10 INT, 86.5 PR

And, coincidentally, 2003 was also Tom Brady's most successful year in terms of comebacks and game winning drives, with 4 and 7, respectfully (he's had 4 comebacks in a couple other seasons, but never in a total of 7 game winning drives). Luck already has 3 4th quarter comebacks this year (while he doesn't have as many as he did last year, it is worth noting that the Colts have, at some point, been losing in every game this year except @ San Francisco).
  10. Davis still is a bit aloof after THAT interview after the game....reminded me of Eddie Murphy with that huge smile!!

Oh, the guy is a space cadet, don't get me wrong, but he's had a great attitude and has really improved his game since he got here.

  11. Honestly, I love TY and Fleener, but sitting here on Tuesday with no Reggie Wayne, the guy I'm most glad Luck has as a target is... wait for it... Stanley Havili.

We're going to have to spread it around more, and having a guy like that providing a reliable outlet from the backfield is going to help out a lot.  That was a great trade for us.

  12. Good point....Butler was headed out of the league before we signed him....and he has not done too much for us has he?  HMMMM :)

Davis was an immature headcase who got by on his physical tools, too (at least, that's what I kept hearing when we traded for him).

Seriously, Pagano is a brilliant secondary coach.  His first year coaching in the NFL, in 2001, he was the Browns' secondary coach, and they had 33 interceptions.  The only seasons a Pagano-coached NFL team has had a defensive passer rating higher than 80 were in 2005, in his first season with the Raiders, when it was around 90, and dropped to 74 in his second season, and 2012, for obvious reasons. In 2008 he turned a Ravens team that had and 87.6 DPR the season before into the best in the league, barely over 60 DPR.  We are the 4th NFL team where he's come in and turned the secondary into a strength.  Our head coach is also the best secondary coach in the NFL.

  14. Neither one of these guys could even hold Reggie's jock strap.

We're not going to be able to find a replacement for Reggie Wayne.  Period.  We need to look at it as, the guys we have now are our WR corps, and are there any reasonable moves we could make to improve the team at that position.

  15. Lavon Brazill

Obviously would be nice if he steps up.

Also, it's a good thing that Havili has been so good as a receiver out of the backfield, and that Fleener is getting better by the week.

Anyway, if we approach this as "we need to replace Reggie," we're going to be disappointed, because that's impossible.  We have some pieces in place, and we should look into a move to bolster our receiving corps so that the team is still a Super Bowl contender.  But you can't just replace a guy like Reggie Wayne.

  16. Here's a short list of current free agent WRs, does anyone on here interest you guys?

  17. I think satele should Suh...

Actually not that far-fetched.  It's tough to prove, but at least in theory, you can be liable for an intentional tort for your actions on a football field in certain circumstances (Hackbart v. Cincinnati Bengals).
