  1. so you call me silly and dont give me any reason you think he will be cut and then say you wont continue to conversation or the supposed debate? Thats whats silly dont you think, Im not thinking he will start realistically, but I have no doubts he will make the team to be honest

I did give you a reason.....you just don't want to hear it. He was determined by professional scouts and talent evaluators to be lacking one or more of these traits: strength, speed, agility, footwork, balance, athleticism, football iq, or overall football skill. That is why he wasn't drafted by ANY of the 32 teams in ANY of the 7 rounds of the draft. At Hicks' position, we have 4 guys on the roster who have played offensive line in the NFL, and another guy who WAS determined by professional football people to have the necessary tools to be drafted. And all five of THOSE guys won't even make the roster. It's really as simple as that.

So, maybe Hicks is that 1/1000 guy who beats the odds and has a long NFL career a la Jeff Saturday, but odds are overwhelming that he *isn't* that guy. Nobody is saying he doesn't have strong parts to his game, nobody is saying he might not make the practice squad, nobody is saying he has no chance of eventually making the roster down the road. But, what I stated above is why, when projecting the likely 53 man roster for opening day next year, it is extremely likely that Hayworth Hicks will not be on it.

  2. Jason Peters went undrafted as well and he is a Left Tackle thats blind side protection right their by an undrafted player, Wes Welker, John Randle, James Harrison, Antonio Gates, Heck Jeff Saturday, very good players can be picked up and have started via the undrafted route, Scouts arent always right

I would continue this discussion with you, but i'll just get banned again. Just know that for every person you listed above, there are about 1000 that didn't make it.

  3. 1.Have you looked at his highlights? 2.Do you even know where he played at in college?

3.Did you see Reitz get beat by the bull rush, he got no push on the line with the running game

Guards have to be physical maulers, thats not Reitz and that certainly is Hicks

Coffeedrinker and I have already had a discussion with you, remember?

Look, Hicks is so good that 100% of people who scout and evaluate NFL players for a living decided he wasn't good enough to be drafted. I trust their opinion over yours.

  4. Well...I could be wrong but, how many CB's and Safeties do you need? I'm looking at some 2011 rosters from last year and the average is about 5 CBs and 4 Safties on the final depth chart. I guess if I'm off by one CB, I should be thrown in the looney bin and never allowed to post here again.

If we only carry 6 DL and 4 CB, we wouldn't even be able to field a defense by about week 8. And usually if you carry 9 db's, one of them is a swing man who can play both cb & s. In our case, perhaps that could be Rucker or Brandon King?

Actually, I would prefer to only carry 9 dbs and use an extra body on the OL or at WR (I like your idea of carrying 6 WR's and think its definitely a possibility given the 4 WR sets we'll be running).

  5. After watching these guys practice at LOS, seeing where they lined players up and my person feelings on who will get the start... this is my best guess as to the final 53 man roster at this point. Who do you think should stay or be cut from the current roster?

  6. The "too small" comment always kills me.

Although at the time we were too small on the DL (and that was a timing issue more than anything), I can't help but think a big part of his "too small" comment is directed towards our 2 ilbs. And what drives me bananas is this fascination with analysts in determining that 1 inch of height and about 5-10 pounds in weight seems to determine whether a guy is "undersized" or is ideal.

  7. Yeah, the media emphasizes the importance of rings and wins/losses because that is why this game exists....to win games & ultimately the championship. Fans, owners, coaches, front office personnel.....pretty much everyone emphasizes wins and rings. Thats pretty much the point of playing professional football.

So that is why guys who wins games and rings like Ben Roethlisberger are held in higher regard than guys with career 32-34 records who stuff stats on loser to mediocre teams like Matt Schaub. They should be held in higher regard.

I mean which season would cause you to hold Schaub in higher regard: 2009 when he led the NFL in passing yards but the team was a nonfactor and went 8-8, or a potential 2012 season where they go say 12-4, but due to the strength of their running game, only finishes at #9 or #10 in the NFL in passing, yet leads the team to a Super Bowl victory?

  8. Health is difficult to predict, but if Matt's healthy than he's a top 3 qb in the AFC

No, he's not. Manning, Brady and Roethlisberger are. Schaub probably isn't even better than Phil Rivers.

And since he's not now, as he hits his mid 30's, he definitely won't be in 3 years, which is what the topic is about.

  9. I almost left out the comment about Russel because it is meaningless and yes he was a bust.

The point is that cumulative #'s you mentioned

Considering the garbage QB cluster that played last year combined for : 56.6% 3223 14 td 14 int. So yeah I expect quite a bit more than that. But again maybe I'm the devil for expecting him to be competent in year one.

But if you want me to stat splitting hairs I'll be more than happy to.

Yeah, when put that way, I think i'm underselling Luck. Put me down for 23 td passes 16 ints.

And thanks for holding back on *really* splitting hairs. You have me shaking in my boots at the possibility of you actually trying to split hairs

  10. Russell only started one game, so he's not a fair comparison since there is only one way Luck only starts one game. The one game Russell started he played fairly welll in it.

If Luck plays 16 games then your #'s would be disappointing.

Good Lord. You like to split hairs, do you? Your looking way too deep into what i'm saying. I'm looking at it ONLY from a numbers perspective. If Luck finishes the season 36-66 373 yards 2 tds and 4ints, we would all be disappointed, correct? I know that he'll likely play more than Russell played his first year.

But if it makes you feel better, use a different highly touted qb that logged more playing time and had a lousy year their rookie season. How bout Ryan Leaf. Is that sample size large enough for you, since he played in 10 games his rookie year? Does that make things clearer, now? I think everyone understood my point when I referenced Jamarcus Russell.

  11. Man it's time to give up on this hopelessness Qwiz...you see, I can admit that we might do poorly next year. Injuries, poor play, who knows what can happen. But there's every reason for us to be successful, and this guy Karl can't admit it as even a possibility. It's just blindness. It's a bad disease.

I guess you missed where I said you had a ceiling of 11 wins. There aren't alot of teams I would say that about. The Colts certainly don't have that ceiling.

I just don't think it will happen. Not sure why this baffles the two of you.

  12. I am not sure any of us ever stated the Texans were going to be a dream team. Just that the potential is there to be a top team. Now I have also stated that injuries etc. could kill them again and I often say IF their D carries over from last year. Of course we never know what can happen in any given season. Right? But, at the same time it is the offseason and I try to sometimes start discussions because basically there is not much else to talk about outside of Gonzo getting cut/Luck almost being signed/how many games will the Colts win next year part 500/Irsay's strange tweets and Manning having a healthy bowel movement at the Denver complex and how strong it looked to reporters who caught a top secret glimpse.

    This is correct.

And quite simply, I DON'T think the bolded things will happen, and that is why I think they will finish 7-9.

-I think they will be injury prone. Again. Matt Schaub has played 2 full seasons out of 5 for Houston and is coming off a serious foot injury. And he was already very immobile before that injury. He is a question mark. Andre Johnson missed significant time last year due to injury, and will be entering his 10th season with ALOT of tread on his tires. So it is not out of line to think he might slow down this season. They also lost 40% of their offensive line. How the replacements perform is a question mark. And finally, they've always struggled to find a legit #2 receiver to put opposite Dre. Once again that was not addressed this offseason, and once again that is a question mark. Biased Texan fans THINK that they will be batting 1.000 with all of these questions. I DON'T think that.

-I don't think their D will carry over from last year (just like in 2009 when they had a Top 5 defense from weeks 4-17, and then proceeded to have one of the worst defenses in the league in 2010 with the same players). I think this because A) They suffered key personnel losses on defense and B) they won't be playing the #32 ranked offense 2 times, the #30 ranked offense 2 times, the #22 ranked offense, the #21 ranked offense, and the #20 ranked offense, as they did last season. Does anyone remember the one elite offense they faced last year and what happened? New Orleans, who put up 40 points and 450 yards of offense. This year they face New England, Detroit, Green Bay, Chicago with Cutler, Marshall and Forte. Not to mention there is now an entire season's worth of film for opponents to study and adjust to what Wade Phillips has done with his Houston defense.

-Last year they played the second easiest schedule in the NFL. This year they play a first place team's schedule.

-Being that they won the division, they will now be targeted by opponents as a "big game"

These are all real and valid areas of concern and/or items that can cause them to lose games. So someone explain what is so utterly astonishing about my thought process in thinking they might lose 8-9 games?

  13. As many have explained to you, you are the one being ridiculous. Go back to page 1 and look at my FIRST post. Did I say "HECK YEAH we'll be the top team!" No. Guess what, my whole post was based around potential problems we could have. As I've also stated, deep down you want the Texans to do poorly, for your own gratification, I've seen it in your posts. You = Texans hater. You're bitter about something, I don't know what, maybe the pride we show now that we're a contender, I don't really care. It's one thing to discuss openly the future success or failure of a team, but it's another thing entirely when one person already had a supreme bias against them.

The reason I know this is because you have never conceded that we might do well next year. You have it cemented in your brain from self-propoganda that we will crash and burn.

Random, biased Texan fans on a message board thinking i'm "ridiculous" for thinking their team will finish with a record that is completely realistic for them to finish with is of no concern to me whatsoever. And go back and read this thread, as there are several people who think YOU are being "ridiculous". So don't act like i'm in the minority in thinking the Texans might finish around .500 next year. Regardless, your feelings don't make my points any less valid, aren't going to change what I think will happen or what actually will happen next year, and they certainly don't make your idealized prognostication any more likely to happen than mine.

And if it makes you feel better, I see a ceiling of 11 wins for the Texans if everything goes right, and a floor of 5 wins if things completely fall apart. Neither of those scenarios are likely to happen, though, so that's why I picked you to finish 7-9 (8-8 is also a strong possibility). It's called being "realistic".

  14. This got me thinking:

    http://www.nfl.com/n...appear-in-maxim

Isn't this a little too early to be featuring a woman on the cover of Maxim for a quarterback who isn't the starter for his team yet? Furthermore, as of this post, he hasn't even signed a contract.

    http://sportsillustr...ansactions.html

If Ryan Tannenhill ends up being a bust, will this directly effect Lauren's career as a model? Do you think Lauren will be a distraction for Ryan? How do you think Ryan is coping with the fact Lauren is getting more publicity than he is? Considering the fact she held up Ryan's own jersey for him, I have to wonder whether this love dynamic will play to Ryan's benefit or not, considering how poor it effected Tony Romo in relation to Jessica Simpson.

Lot of head scratching on this one. Miami better hope they get 1st round value out of Lauren, err I mean Ryan.

I think you meant "when" Ryan Tannehill ends up being a bust.

  15. I have honestly often liked a team like the Texans more then rivals over the years such as the Pats/Chargers/Steelers/Ravens and yes Broncos. Those have been playoff rivals more then not, Houston has been our punching bag.

The Texans have often been like our little brother. Now they are in the big brother position. I think many hate this. But, they have done things the right way overall I feel. They have waited patiently for their turn and never tried to buy a title. They have drafted a lot of good talent. They are not big mouths nor flashy.

I understand the sentiment. I hope we beat them. However at the same time I don't mind if their fans are excited about the team. I don't wave pom poms for Houston in private. I do admire the defensive turnaround though, a main reason I think the potential is there. I give credit where credit is due.

I loved watching the defenses of the Texans and 49ers last year.

No, here's what doesn't make sense. Why can't any of this just be objective talk about a random NFL team? Why aren' t the Texans allowed to have areas of weakness, just as every other team in the NFL has, that can be discussed in a thread about how good the Texans will be next year? Just because someone doesn't think the Texans will be a top team in the NFL means they are "haters" now? I mean, if someone comes on here with a Jacksonville Jaguar thread, i'm really going to be a "hater".

I don't view them as a big brother or little brother. I don't view them as anything, just like I don't view the Raiders as anything, or the Seahawks, or the Vikings. I simply don't think they will be a top team next year. Just like I don't think many other teams will be top teams. And I will state as such if/when threads are started about other teams odds of success next year.

The only ridiculous thing going on in this thread is how much of a hissy fit people seem to throw if you don't think their team is going to be as good as they hope their team is going to be.
