  1. Our present DB's could play man to man and they would still be beat..they are just not good.

You realize they only have to stay with their man for about three seconds and one of our DEs would be putting a hit on the QB right? I did an experiment with a friend who is quite a bit faster than me. I played CB and he played WR. Another friend was the quarterback. The rule was he had to throw it in no more than five seconds. I weigh about 210 lbs and my friend playing WR weighs 160. We are about the same height. I did not hold him or grab him and throw him to the ground. Each time I started out about 4 yards off of him and all I did was try to stay with him. He and the QB would talk before ever play and decide what kind of route he would run, and I obviously did not know. Mind you he is a lot faster than me, but out of the 20 times we did this experiment, he caught five of them, and two of those were real screens that maybe gained a yard.

I know this experiment may not be perfect, but I think it shows that a less athletic DB can still stay with his man for a few seconds and the time it takes for Dwight Freeney to put a hit on the QB.

  2. I thought in years past Polian always talked about how we don't use injuries as an excuse. It was always 'next man up'.

Our injuries aren't even that bad other than Peyton. Big deal we lost Bullitt who has become the new Bob Sanders just with far less talent. Brackett's down but he's getting older and has lost a couple steps anyway. All our CBs are healthy...imagine that. They just suck. We also lost Nevis but he's a friggin rookie. Can't use that as an excuse. Castonzo is out and that hurts but it's not like the line is playing bad anyway.

I get madder and madder every time Polian talks.

  3. Hahahaa. Yeah good thing Polian doesn't listen to the talking heads. Good thing he also doesn't listen to the knowledgable fans on this forum too. If he did, we'd probably be last in points allowed......oh wait. Apparently it's baffling that playing 15 yards off receivers in the red zone leads to touchdowns.

  4. I think we need to quit talking about this and just hope it goes away. The Almighty Polian is baffled.

I think certainly the best thing to do is stay the course. You know, keep chopping wood. Obviously we have certainly not played as well as we'd like. Sometimes you just need to do the little things right. A little mistake here and a little mistake there can certainly cause a few headaches for the duration of the game, but you've just gotta keep doing what you do and hope to get better.

  5. I hate it when people say that we have so much money tied up in key players. How do you think any other team is built. You pay good money for your proven guys, let the ones walk that think they're better than what you're offering, and you fill your other spots with valuable cheaper players. It's not too difficult a concept. Also this notion that the offense makes way more than the defense is false.

    Highly payed O players:

    Manning

    Wayne

    Clark

    Highly payed D players

    Brackett

    Bethea

    Mathis

    Freeney

You could add Saturday and Addai to the O list but they really don't hurt much cap wise. Also don't forget Hayden's ridiculous contract and Bob 'The Glass Man' Sanders.

  6. The fact that you think Jerry Jones is a great GM completely tells me you know nothing of what you speak. The Cowboy's rarely miss the playoffs??? Okay their one playoff win in the last 15 years or so shoots that idea down right away.

Go on keep defending Polian and now you can add Jerry Jones to that list too. The only time Jones was any good was when there was no salary cap and he could spend all he wanted on players. It's not hard to build a good team when you're GM of the Yankees......I mean Cowboys.

  7. The only person I agree with in this thread is Jason.

He is absolutely right, our lack of talent in the secondary is having a massive trickle down effect on everything else. When our Mike linebacker is dropping 15 yards off the LOS to help in coverage, you know you have a problem. We run the same defensive scheme every down. Our LBs are not undersized for a 4-3. Pat Angerer is the same size as Patrick Willis, nobody's calling Willis undersized. Wheeler and Conner are both about the same size and 240ish is not small for an OLB. Our D-line is definitely not undersized. Freeney has said he keeps his game weight between 268 and 272. That is not undersized for a pass rusher. Anderson and Brayton are both 280 plus. Not at all undersized for DEs. The DTs are all 300 plus. When healthy a DT rotation of Nevis, Johnson, and Moala can be dominant. Maybe not to the point of getting a lot of sacks, but still very stout. We do not lack talent in the front 7. It is all in the secondary.

In the draft I'd like to see us get our QB of the future. I don't watch much college football, but I'm not sold on Luck. Then again I am rarely sold on college quarterbacks. There is too much uncertainty. I've watched some highlights of Luck and while he does have a strong arm, he also has the best line in college football. His receivers are always really easy to hit. I could hit those guys in that system. Put him in the NFL where he has 3 seconds to pass on a good play and you never know how he'll respond. I wouldn't be upset with Luck though, he'd have plenty of time to adapt sitting behind the GOAT for a few years.

Obviously we need to look at corners, safeties, wideouts, and possibly guard/center. I like our oline with Castonzo, Reitz, Pollak, new guard, and Ijalana, so I don't know if we necessarily need to draft a guard. Tepper or that new guy we have playing RT could possibly be good enough to take over next year. If we let Mathis go we'll need a new pass rusher. That position is one in which you can never be certain of what you're getting so I'd try to fill that need in a later round. At safety I'd say hope that Bullitt can stay healthy or look in free agency. Really any of these spots could be filled in free agency. But knowing the Colts they won't gamble on a proven player, they'd rather go with the sure thing that is the draft.

  8. FAIL POST!!!

this is the same guy that was saying how genius Polian was for what he did in Buffalo and Carolina. This is just another backstabbing wagon jumping fan. We don't need fans like this. GET OUT!!

If I have ever given him credit, it's for what he did in Buffalo and Carolina, he turned them into good football teams. In Indianapolis, he's completely lost his mojo. The league changes and Polian hasn't adapted. He's old, what can you expect. Just because you were successful doesn't mean you always will be. Lawrence Taylor was a good linebacker 20 years ago, it doesn't mean I'd want him on my team now.

  9. Alright first of all, the art of GMing is not an exact science. Bill Polian was lucky to get Peyton Manning in 98. Peyton Manning has bailed our bad team out of losing records his entire career. He is the one and only reason Bill has survived all this time, and it has come out that Bill was kinda leaning towards drafting Ryan Leaf. Good thing he had the stroke of genius to go with Manning instead.

GMing is something where even if you just go with Mel Kiper's board, you're still bound to hit on some players. You'll also miss on some players. I could do a day's worth of research on the entire draft board, just reading people's opinions, and make my own board. I would still hit on some players and miss on some players. I don't fault Bill for his drafting ability. I fault him for his hiring of bad coaches/training staff, and his stubbornness in sticking to his guns....especially when those guns aren't working. By guns I am referring to our defensive schemes. I also fault him for never even trying to bring in solid contributers through free agency. This last year is the first time in many that I felt we made an attempt to help the roster in free agency, and that was more than likely Chris Polian's doing. I also fault Bill for being a pompous, self-righteous, *. Does anyone even know why he cut our second best cornerback this year? That has yet to be explained.

A little side note, I don't think John Waylon has ever been a Polian supporter. How would you know what his opinion of BP was five or six years ago anyway?

  10. Allow me to explain what Waylon was referring to. You and dn4192 are both pretty bad posters, and you both came up around the same time. Polian does not deserve a second chance you know why? Because he's had years of second chances to build an even respectable team around Peyton. He has not. Now that our quarterback is down, we're 0-7 and our defense gave up the most points in a game since 1988. A GM that builds that defense should be gone, especially one who has as much power as he does. So much power that he gives his kids jobs in the front office.

  11. It's not because of lack of push from the DTs, it's because of lack of coverage ability by our DBs and LBs. When the QB drops back and throws less than two seconds after the snap for easy completions, it makes it physically impossible to get pressure from DEs or DTs. A defensive line of The Flash, The Incredible Hulk, The Thing, and Superman would have a hard time getting pressure with our DBs.

  12. Royal would definitely be a good replacement for Wayne. He's young, has a ton of speed, and is a really good route runner. He might not be expensive since his numbers aren't earth-shattering, who's numbers would be in Denver? Having him out left, Garcon out right, and Collie in the slot would be a deadly combo. People put waaaaay too much stock in somebody's height. How tall is the league leader? Oh that's right 5'9".....Wes Welker.

  13. The draft would have gone something like this:

Chris would take a solid player who is the BPA and one of our needs (like he did with Castonzo), let's say WR as an example. Fans will be super happy and think it was a great pick. The draft pick will have lots of hype and we will all be excited for what he can do the next year. The pick will not get as much thrown his way as we first hoped and then those same fans that were excited for the pick at the start of the season will be calling the pick a bust by week 3 and say that they were never happy with the pick.

I do think they are building the team for the future. By taking the best player available, instead of reaching for a position of need, we let our team have lots of talent on it, even when Peyton is gone.

    Hahahahaha

Truer words have yet to be spoken. God some fans are a fickle bunch.

  14. Some of you guys are too scared of Hillis. These are the kinds of teams we actually can stop the run against. Our D will have a good day provided that they can stop the dink and dunk. Even the worst qbs can dink and dunk us, but once they get in the red zone they can't punch it in and resort to a field goal. They will get a lot of field goals, a couple turnovers, and a few punts. They'll be lucky to get 15 points against us. The offense just needs to score a couple touchdowns and I think we win in a low scoring game.

  15. You don't know that he wouldn't of fumbled once or twice or even three times. Who would've guessed he would have thrown all those interceptions last year against the Chargers. Its all speculation and isn't even worth discussing. heck he could've had his knee blown out on the very first play.

Peyton doesn't fumble period. He gets a little pick happy once in a while, but he doesn't fumble a snap from Jeff Saturday inside the 20. He also has a lot better pocket awareness than Kerry Friggin Collins. Curtis Painter's grandma has more pocket awareness than he showed today. Collins has only been successful when he has a massive line to protect him, and a solid running game to take pressure off him. I don't care that he's never had the so-called 'weapons' he has here. The only viable 'weapon' we have is Reggie Wayne. Peyton makes the other guys look a lot better than they are.

  16. Okay....I've got a problem with some of you calling out the front office on the DT issue and our inability to stop the run.

    1. The needs were addressed. Anderson has not been known for his ability to rush the passer, but he has been known for being strong against the run. Brayton, while slightly less so, is in much the same boat. Both were first round picks, not that that has anything to do with it. Nevis, a guy we have all loved, and who people have been touting as the second coming of Sapp, was drafted in the third. We kept the fan favorite Mookie and got rid of the fan whipping boy Muir. Plus the improvement of Moala has been noticable to anyone paying attention. Anyone bashing our perceived 'lack of effort' in improving the run defense is just looking at the numbers and saying 'omg We suck!!!!'

    2. Our defense has been notorious for being inconsistent when it comes to certain facets of the game. One game we can't stop the power run game, and the next game we give up 250 yards receiving to Brandon Marshall. Even good defenses have bad games. I'm not saying we're even a good defense, but I don't think we're as bad as some are making us out to be.

    3. Don't forget that we handed them the ball inside the 20 two times. That's 14 points that we just handed them, not to mention the special teams didn't help in the final score department either.

  17. The only thing I disagree with is us losing with 18 in there. You are correct...Peyton would not have fumbled two times to give them the ball in the redzone. The oline, while still isn't anything to be proud of, I thought was improved from last year. Peyton has such a tremendous pocket awareness and internal clock that he would have made all the difference. The running game even looked a little better. There was some life to it. With Big P we would have found a way to win this one.

Look at it this way...after the Bullit pick, Peyton could probably scores a quick touchdown and we're up 7-0. Instead, we let them pound it down our throats, and hand them the ball in the redzone twice. Bang, bang, bang, we're down 17-0. The defense is demoralized, and the offense finally realizes that their quarterback went from the GOAT, to a statue, with no pocket awareness, and fingers of butter....but hey he can throw far.
