  1. Now I know some people are going to come in here and post a big 'NO!!!' without reading this but for the rest of you please just hear me out.

People like to talk about how he's always hurt. That was true for '09 and '10, but this year I'm pretty sure he was healthy for most of the year. Some might say, well, if he was healthy why didn't he have the production of his first two years? To that I'd say nobody had the kind of production we're accustomed to in Indy. Plus he was behind Wayne, Garcon, and Collie. Justifiably so. But for next year, we don't know about Wayne being resigned, because he'd probably want a pretty fat contract, while Gonzo on the other hand, has no bargaining chip in his corner due to his lack of production for three years. He could probably be resigned for vet minimum, and it's not like any other team would pay more than that for him.

I don't think the dude has regressed in ability. He's still young, can run routes, and as far as I know can still catch. If Wayne can't be resigned, I see no reason not to resign Gonzo to a vet minimum contract. Next year line up Garcon out to the right, Collie to the left, and Gonzo in the slot. Hey if Peyton can make Blair White work, he can turn Gonzo back into starter material.

  2. Just because the Eagles didn't make the playoffs, doesn't mean they weren't a talented team. This guy built a solid team, they just couldn't put it together for whatever reason. The guy brought in the second best corner in the league and it took him a few weeks to get acclimated in a short offseason. Nobody's going to say the Jason Babin signing was bad, or Cullen Jenkins. I'll be the first to say Vince Young was a bad signing, but we all talk about making a key free agent signing in the offseason, it looks like this guy would be one to pull that trigger.

  3. The thing about a GM search is, it's hard to know who really built the team they were from. There are so many scouts that a team employs, that you just don't know who said what about certain players. I don't like to say we fans don't know crap about football, because I think there are some really knowledgable fans about the game, but we do not know the first thing about which scouts are good and which ones aren't. Just because there's some buzz about this Decasto guy, doesn't mean everyone else sucks.

  4. I am so tired of people saying we need to dump Peyton Manning, the GOAT, in favor of an unproven rookie. We know what we get with Manning. As long as he's healthy, which it seems to be trending that way, you do not dump the guy that has single handedly carried this team for the last 12 years. Luck comes from a strong college program, makes a lot of underneath throws and easy crossing routes, the deep ball gets opened up because of their strong running game, and his oline is top notch in college football. If he comes to Indy, and is expected to start day one, he will be inheriting a team with an extremely mediocre oline, average WRs with inflated stats due to playing with Manning, and a defense that gets gashed in the run and pass game. He would not have the ability initially, to carry a team.

  5. Maybe the new regime won't overpay for our own overrated, injury prone players.

Maybe they'll learn from Polian's mistake and not build a team that lives or dies on the arm of one man.

Maybe they will have a better track record of late first round draft picks.

Maybe they won't stubbornly stick to the defensive scheme we employ if it becomes apparent it's not working.

  6. I won't pretend to know much about defensive schematics, but I'll give it a whirl anyway.

Teams change their base defense all the time. Houston went from a 4-3 to a 3-4 over the offseason. New England did the opposite. I think a 4-3 works better if you have superior personnel, but a 3-4 works better if you have sub-par personnel and you want to thrive on confusion.

In the base defense, I'd look at it consisting of Nevis and Moala at DE, with hopefully a huge mass of a man like Paul Soliai at NT. None of our current DTs could play NT in a 3-4 so we'd have to find someone in the offseason. Wheeler would be awesome as a 3-4 OLB, and you could put Freeney or Mathis in as the other one although they may be a liability in pass coverage. The two MLBs would obviously be Angerer and Brackett.

I think it could work and I get tired of hearing people say 'OMG THIS AGAIN!!! WE DON'T HAVE THE PLAYERS!!!! TAMPA TWO FOREVER!!!!!' I heard a quote from Belicheck earlier this year, it was something about how you want football players, not system players.

  7. I know it's not a popular view to stick up for Hughes, but I honestly think he'd be a pretty good pass rusher. He doesn't have the size or ability to be an every down DE, but really none of our DEs are every down. A tandem of Anderson/Brayton on run downs, and Freeney/Hughes on pass downs would be a pretty stout tandem if I say so myself......as well as it should be considering they're all first round picks. I would not say Hughes was worth his draft pick status though. If I'm a GM, I don't spend a first rounder on a situational pass rusher. But in the past when he's been in on pass rushing downs, he has gotten pretty good pressure. I'd say Mathis is not a must sign.

  8. Peyton's contract will account for $17 million against the salary cap. Freeney's will be something like $19 mil. I'd rather pay the 17 for an all pro quarterback than the 19 for a pass rusher. Not saying Freeney should be cut, just that 17 million isn't that much in the scheme of things.

  9. I mean, my God. This team just keeps scoring points. They put up 45 on a Falcons team that's gonna be in the playoffs. They destroyed the Giants a few weeks ago. They'll at least make it to the NFC championship game. The Niners won't be able to hang with them. The Packers will give them a good fight because they have the offensive firepower, but without Jennings they may not have enough. I'm betting on a Saints/Patriots Super Bowl, in a shootout, that ends with NO pulling away towards the end.

As a Colts fan it hurts to put those two teams in the SB.

  10. I think we've been doing things a little differently the last couple games. Don't quote me on that, but I'm sure I've seen corners playing a little closer, Conner coming in on blitzes, and I seem to recall Caldwell even making a tackle for loss. That said, the D didn't play as well as I'd like. They didn't give up many points, but there is no reason Houston shouldn't have put up 30 on us. Foster was getting what, 10 yards per carry? And that play action bootleg they like to run got us every time. I guess I'm conflicted on the defensive play. On one hand, they didn't give up a lot of points, and that's all that really matters. On the other hand, good quarterbacks will destroy our D.

  11. By the way, those of you who disagree with me on this, I totally get it. Heck, up until about a week ago I was there with you.

All I ask though (and I think the same could be said for the people who are of the same opinion) is that if you want to disagree with me, please don't insult me or pretend I'm not a fan for thinking so. Our only intentions are what we feel are the best interest of the team long term.

I hate losing. But if losing one game secures our long term future, I'll sit through it.

I know what you mean dude. I just don't think there's a whole lot of difference between the first, second, and third picks. You're either going to get a stud, or a massive Jamarcus-sized bust.......and knowing the Colts, they will draft Luck with the number one pick, so I'd rather win and get the third pick so we can draft Morris Claiborne or Quinton Coples.

  12. I freaking love Reggie Wayne!!!

Some people have been saying he's been acting a little bit like a diva, but I think he's just been frustrated by our sub par play. I see a lot of quality players on our team, we've just had horrible quarterback play most of the season. Collins was a mistake, he had no pocket presence and was just in general ready to hang it up and sing country songs. Painter was an experiment that I think could have worked out alright with better schemes offensively and defensively, but ultimately failed. 'The Big O' has been better than I thought and I would not mind having him here as a backup or third stringer next year.

I think we can resign Reggie for a good 4 mil per year for the next three years. Hopefully he takes a cap friendly deal like that.....we could use him.

  13. Nice post Doogan.

One thing I'd like people to think about, is the complete absence of a 'sure thing' when it comes to the NFL draft. In '07 the first three picks were Jamarcus Russel, Calvin Johnson, and Joe Thomas, respectively. The team with the number one pick wasted what, $60 million on a massive bust, while the next two teams got players that are the best at their respective position 5 years down the road. Not saying Luck would be Jamarcus Russel, but there is no such thing as a guarnateed sure thing.

Also I want somebody that will contribute the next four years other than by holding a clipboard, because Big P ain't goin' nowhere.
  14. It was really Diem who was having the hardtime tonight with Watt. Link was doing what Link does in pass protection push the guy wide enough that Orvlosky can step up. It's not a shut down block but it still works.

Ooops. Now that you mention it, it was Diem. Watt kept breaking through inside against him and O jumped out of the sack. I swear it happene at least three times. Plus I seem to remember Castonzo getting beat a few times and him slipping through those sacks.

  15. To be honest I don't even want Luck. I want either Morris Claiborne or Quinton Coples to replace Mathis. I'd much rather us draft a guy like Nick Foles out of Arizona that we can develop into a starter, rather than have a guy to sit on the bench the next four years. I want an immediate impact making, defensive stud. Claiborne is this years shutdown CB and Quinton Coples is this drafts Julius Peppers.

  16. Man I am so tired of Luck. I don't want him on our team. Either trade the first pick and have a bevy of picks later, or use it on somebody that can contribute to the Super Bowl runs we'll be making in Big P's last 4 years. I'd much rather get a middle round QB with strong work ethic, who doesn't mind sitting the bench and learning from the best.

I really wouldn't mind us letting Mathis walk and bringing in that Coples guy. He sounds like a Julius Peppers kind of DE, and I would love to have Julius Peppers on our team. A guy that can rush the passer and play the run......imagine that. After that you gotta get a shutdown CB, a replacement for Wayne, and another guard since Saturday and Diem are probably gone. Address those issues, and I don't see any team being able to stop us.

    QB - P. Money

HB - Addai, Brown, Carter (The Three Headed Monster)

    FB - Felton

WR - Wayne, Garcon, Collie, AJ Jenkins (Illinois)

    TE - Clark, Tamme, Eldridge

    LT - Castonzo

    LG - Reitz

    C - Pollak

RG - Carl Nicks (I can dream right? Saints already have a lot tied up in Evans and they have to resign Brees)

    RT - Ijalana

DE - Freeney, Quinton Coples, Anderson, Brayton, Hughes

DT - Nevis, Moala, Mookie, Derek Wolfe (Cincinnati)

    OLB - Sims, Conner, Wheeler

    MLB - Angerer

CB - Powers, Chase Minnifield (Virginia), Thomas, Lacey, Rucker

    FS - Bethea

    SS - Bullitt

Also we have a new defensive scheme in place, one that actually challenges the receivers a little bit. And a new Special Teams coach and Strength and Conditioning coach.

  17. I'd rather Polian be gone then Caldwell. I think Caldwell is just a cheerleader......minus of course the cheering. He watches the game with the mild curiosity of the average, bimbo girlfriend. His presence on the sideline holds the same merit of a 10 year old paraplegic whose wish is being granted by charity. He does nothing to help or hinder the team, so while I wouldn't mind him gone, I also wouldn't mind him staying.

Polian on the other hand needs to go. He obviously is not the powerhouse building GM his legacy will leave him as. This team lived and died on the arm of one person. A good GM is not supposed to make a living off one easy draft pick. But that's not it for me. He sticks his nose in everything. He has forced the defensive scheme all year up until this last game that has been recordbreakingly bad. He cut a quality cornerback in Tryon for seemingly no reason. His radio show has become a comedy show. I swear he goes into every interview thinking, 'Gee, what can I say today to really anger the fanbase?' And........I still hold week 16 against him. He lost any respect I had for him that day. I know, the goal is to win the Super Bowl. Well............how did that work out for ya?

  18. Wow, I love the guy but I did not realize Freeney's cap hit was going to be 19 mil. Between Peyton at 28 mil, and Dwight at 19, we're tying up 47 million dollars in two people. No way should a pass rusher make that much money. Freeney is not an every down DE. We brought in Anderson and Brayton to take some of his downs so I just can not justify giving him that much.

If he gets restructured, doesn't that basically mean he gets the same amount of money but over a longer period of time?

I don't know what the salary cap is next year, but I figure it's around 140 mil. No way can you tie up 1/3 of that for two people.

  19. Or did our DBs play closer to the LOS and we weren't dropping Angerer back to the deep middle every single play. It looked to me like we mixed things up a little bit on defense. Think about that Lacey pick, he stayed close enough to his man that when the ball was released, he was able to jump it and take it away. That is how you play cornerback. I really like Sims at Will, Conner at Sam, and Angerer in the middle. I could see those guys to be our linebackers of the future.

  20. 1. Jacob Lacey - doesn't get much worse than this guy

    2. Curtis Painter - better be gone next year

    3. Anthony Gonzalez - might not really be this bad, but for a first round pick he sure isn't very productive

    4. Jamey Richard - I think he's still on the roster, and he's easily the worst lineman

    5. Bill Polian - dude's gotta go

I don't know why so many of you are putting Linkenbach on the list. He's actually been pretty good this year. I don't recall seeing him give up many sacks or holds. People just love to rip the guy, much like Pollak. Keep in mind he was undrafted and it's his second year, so I'd say we've gotten more than our moneys worth.
