  1. I sincerely hope for your guys playoffs sake that Brown stays healthy. He's making Richardson look like he should be on the practice squad. You need Brown right now.

Yes, you are exactly right. If anyone had questions, they had to be answered last night. TRich has only done what he did in Cleveland and has not progressed at all. He is an average RB. Even if this is a one year thing for DB, we have to ride him this year.

  2. Hmmm, when I played football the coaches always said if the ball touches your hands or fingers you should catch it. This dont always apply when diving, but does when you dont dive and you should have.

Exactly. And as much as I want DHB to do well and become the star he could be, I'm starting to see why he has not reached that potential yet.

  3. Flacco may not be "bad", but I don't think he is necessarily good either (not even close to elite).  I would say he is average ... QB#15 - #20 range.  Boldin got him his contract, getting rid of him was a huge mistake by Baltimore ... Flacco is not the caliber of player that can elevate those around him; he's never going to be the guy that puts the team on his back and carries them.

On the money. Funny how so many in the media, including former players, use the ''but he won a Super Bowl'' in evaluating a QB's eliteness.

  4. With 3.6 ypc in his rookie year, 3.4 last year and 3.0 this year, it's pretty obvious that TRich has been disappointing, yes, it's hardly any way around it. I do think draft picks are overrated, however and I don't mind us giving up a 1st rounder at all, if the player produces at least above average. There has been a lot of rationallizing, but the bottomline is that he averaged 3.5 ypc with Browns and 3.0 with the Colts. Honestly, there really can't be many defensive coordinators that feel they need to stack the line or put 8 in the box when TRich is the game anymore (and really probably not for the past 5 games). However, we still have the 2nd half of the season to play, and TRich could still make a contribution to a great Colt season. I will wait to make my opinion final on him until the end of the season. But yes, for whatever reason, rationallizing aside, if he can't get to atleast 4.0 ypc, over the last 8 games of the season, I would say we over-invested.

  5. The problem with Trent Richardson is that everyone seems to do well except him. His average yard per carry must improve.

You would be correct. Yards per carry for all of our RBs is over a yard per carry more vs. TRich's. Pretty much the same way in Cleveland. And honestly, not many teams have a reason to load the box when he's in the game now--really.  Many reasons why, legit or not, but sooner or later--bottomline,  TRich has to do better.

  6. I am pulling for TRIch everytime he carries it, of course. And I think draft picks are much overrated, so I don't mind that we gave up a first rounder if he is productive. But at some point, he's got to produce; and produce more than 3.0- 4.0 yards per carry. He didn't do it with the Browns and hasn't done it with us, but that's not to say he won't. But at some point this year, not next--he's an RB so he should do it after a month or so in our system. Do it TRich, just do it.

  7. fleener has been very average so far. richardson just doesn't have the instinct to hit the correct hole. that's not a learned skill for a rb. cherilus has been there all year, there are no more line injuries than most teams in the nfl. everyone has injuries. excuses, excuses, excuses!!!

Accurate on all counts. Cherilus has actually been much better than I thought he would be. He's been better than rock solid, in fact. Fleener makes a few catches but drops way too many and has done about average. I do wish Bradshaw was back, he got the tough yards and a much higher clip than TRich gets tough yards. The run blocking has been very good for our other RBs, with Ballard, Bradshaw and Brown combining for 5.1 ypc.

  8. I don't see where these three struggled in the early years.

    First three years:

    Holmes:      459/2101  4.6 ypc

    Lewis:       1004/4757  4.7 ypc

    Bradshaw   253/1323  5.2 ypc

    First two years:

    Holmes:     322/1514  4.7 ypc

    Lewis:        517/2691  4.4 ypc

    Bradshaw:  90/545     6.0 ypc

Good stuff and good facts. I want TRich to do well extremely badly. I also think draft choices are overrated as evidenced by about a 40% success rate (if more than mediocre is the goal for a first round pick). But I have to say that TRich is doing the same thing in Indy that he did in Cleveland, so it's not his fault at all. He never showed more than 3.6 ypc with the Browns with their team average at 4.0. Same in Indy (actually worse), averaging 3.0 vs. the other top 3 RBs at 5.1 ypc. There are the mitigating factors of TRich getting the tough yards, or Pep not using him right or many other factors,  but at some point, he's has to get more 'tough yards' than 3.0 ypc.

  9. Rating a team/player on Super Bowl wins is one of the most ridiculous things in sports.  If Super Bowls were the be all end all for players why do we rarely hear Terry Bradshaw's name mentioned as one of the greatest QB's ever, why is Brett Favre considered one of the best ever he won one Super Bowl.

I have had the greatest QB argument countless times especially the Manning Brady argument and the only answer I get is he has 3 rings so in other words he won 3 games.  The Super Bowl is one game that's it.  All teams win and lose so really is one game the measure of a player or team?  Think about that argument logically and it becomes clear.

I still think Manning is the best QB ever hands down.  However I do think many other QB's are in the argument.

    Anyway nuff said.

Exactly. Rating teams based on championships is exactly right, but rating players based on that is not applicable. Football is so much the team sport. Yes, individuals, especially QBs can have a great affect, but ultimately its the complete team effort.

  10. There are 2 vastly differing factors going on here. The way to beat the Broncos is to keep Peyton off the field, which would dictate us running the ball, which we do well. The problem is that the Denver defense only gives up 3.2 ypc which is near the best in the league, but their pass defense is the worst. Therefore, to put up points, I think Luck will find that he can get chunks of yards in the passing game. Make no mistake, there are 2 arguments the coaches are going through now. (1) keep Peyton off the field with our running game or (2) take advantage of the Bronco pass defense, which is very bad and try to just put up as many points as we can.

  11. We have been winning despite our coaching, but much like the Dolphins game the pathetic play calling put us behind and never let us get rythym..We played uptempo to start and finish the game and that was our only success...Like Jon Gruden said, he doesn't understand why we don't let Luck sling it more, we have way to many 3 and outs because of our predictability....I don't see the offense evolving at all it reminds me of a high school offense...We are way to easy to figure out, if we throw more and run no huddle it will open up the run game and everything else, we have a great young QB who's skills aren't being utilized because of this power running game/body blows nonsense!! If we had a real OC we would be 6-0 right now it it kills me that are coaches can't seem to make adjustments or gameplan to win instead of game planning not to lose...The decision to punt on 4th and 2 was a joke as well as the defense couldn't get off the field all night so lets give them the ball on the 50 where 1 play puts them in field goal range , the whole thing was pathetic....I know there were many drops, but a lot of that was do to being cold from sitting on the sidelines and not having any rythym all game, and Trich did good he was carrying  2 or 3 guys and getting hit behind the line  all night, if we pass more and put the defense on their heels the holes would open up..That is all...

You were brave enough to just say it and on the money with what you said. This is not a bandwagon jumping rant at all. The players have been good enough up to this point, to mask the poor play calling, but last night, unfortunately, our predictablity was exposed. I have noticed other games as well, but I try to think Pep will get better, but we'll see.

  12. And actually the QB rating is a good measure. The basics of it, simply put are about equally weighing 4 factors---% complete, yards per pass attempt (not completions), % TDs, % interceptions. The more you know of it, the more it makes sense. Yes, as in everything, there are mitigating factors and of course, winning is the bottom line, but in measuring individuals, not teams, the QB rating is pretty good.

  13. San Diego will be the worst defense he's faced all season. He hasn't topped 60 yards all season. So you could see a season high of 60-90 yards.

You are right. The Chargers run defense is 28th in yards per carry at 4.9. TRich should use this game, if any, as a springboard.

  14. On the defense as a whole, looking at each position, we really do look solid. And I'm usually critical or hard to please. The front 3 are very solid-at least their play in the past has been very good. I would like to see the opposition yards per carry go down, though. The LBs, at least Mathis on one side and Freeman on the inside are having Pro Bowl years. I would like to see someone step up or us acquire a better ILB to go beside Freeman--I'm not sure about Angerer anymore. And surely one of the 2 OLB's we've invested so much in will pan out (Werner or Walden). Even if just one of those pan out, we will be ok. The CBs have played well. Butler, Toler and Davis make up a good group. With Howell (now injured) showing he has starter ability, we are very well set at safety with him, Bethea and Landry. With one or two more players over the next year or so, this could be an outstanding defense very soon.

  15. Since the Bucs may be doing a yard sale soon, I'd ask about Carl Nicks since he re-structured recently. ;)

Yes, exactly. Nicks would be the experienced but high level guard this team needs. Not only for leadership, but for pure ability. Good idea.

  16. There is running througha hole and getting contacted and running through the tackle attempt and then there is trying to run through Linebackers and DT's...He does the latter to much, sometimes you have to I understand that but from what I saw on Sunday not in this case, Pads is lowering the pads and running behind them

You, my friend, watch football in detail and are exactly right. There is a hole or sliver that the RB has to run through and not "bunch up" behind the Olinemen. The difference can be seen clearly by watching Bradshaw (yes he is more mature than TRich at this point) vs. TRich. Bradshaw will blast through the seem while TRich bunches up and runs with or into traffic. Here's hoping he will quickly start getting the gashes we all expect. (He won't ever get many homeruns-a few maybe) but he needs to get the 5-15 yard gashes still. I'm hoping he will.
