Here's the thing....he didn't exactly say there wouldn't be any changes, this is from the interview he gave before we were trounced from playoff contention.....

"“Right now, I’m not anticipating making any changes,’’ he told USA Today. “That can always change. It always can when we’re sitting down at the end of the year and evaluate things."

So going by his statement changes could happen, especially since we didn't make playoffs again. I would love to see some changes but whatever happens I won't sleep over it.

That is the thing. While I agree with those saying that he doesn't need to squash every rumor, leaving an out for yourself right before the division slips through our fingers does leave a lot of room for speculation. At this point, I agree with Kravitz who said that Irsay is most likely kicking tires and that this isn't a great look at the end of the day. Perception in the city will be that we were looking to move on, which can't be great for Chuck to hear.

What else are we going to do?  The Colts aren't in the playoffs and the draft is a few months away.  If Irsay really wants these rumors to end, he can address the media.  Until then, people are going to speculate.

Yup, I think it's fine for members of a forum to discuss this. That seems to be the whole purpose of a forum in my mind.

Well, you say that, and I'm not entirely disagreeing with you...he definitely should do his due diligence and all, but at the same time, if he's going to make a change then that new HC is going to need to be able to put together a coaching staff under him and it'd be nice if he had a chance to do that before all of the good candidates are already signed.

I'm not saying he should rush, but if I were him I would expedite the process as much as possible. :)

    Agreed.

No the original post said the last 20 years.  Why define Irsay by only the Manning run?  Irsay is a good owner.  He is far from a bad owner (or at least he WAS we have to wait and see how he does from this point on).  But riding the Manning wave any owner could do that.

I would like to see what Kraft does when Brady and (possibly) Belichick go.  Will he panic when the team hits a bad patch?  Will he hold on to staff too long to see if they come around?  It's easy for an owner and NFL team to ride the wave of a great QB and get all the credit.  The question is though did you maximize your potential when you had him?  The Giants don't have a HOF QB in my opinion.  They still put enough around him to win 2 SB's.  The Ravens don't (and never) had one either and they won two as well.  The Broncos just won one with a HOF QB well past his HOF caliber years.  The Steelers won one with a HOF QB well before he was even considered good.  The Seahawks went to two and won one with a (potential) HOF QB before he reached HOF heights.  To me that is maximizing your potential.  The Patriots did the same.  They won 2 SB's before Brady became BRADY.  The next 2 they won he was BRADY.

The Colts two SB appearances Manning was well full into being MANNING.  He was at the time the best (or 2nd best if you lived in the northeast) QB in the league and that was pretty unanimous.  You are supposed to win a SB with the best QB on the planet.  One is pretty much expected.

Your post stated: "The team had arguably the greatest QB of all time.  HOF players all over the place and made only 2 SB's in that run.  Did Irsay luck into that situation or did he build that?" Which would suggest the Manning years. Seems disingenuous to tack on the Luck years when we have not had a Super Bowl caliber team during those years and Luck is not a HOF QB at the moment.

If we are including the Luck years then every team you mentioned has more talent than the Colts during those years.

With less talent in those last 20 years the Steelers, Patriots, Giants, Packers, Seahawks and Broncos have had more or similar success.  Yes the Colts have more regular season wins but overall success we don't have more than any of those teams.  And none of those teams had the talent that we did.

Just asking was that luck or did he create the entire situation?

During Manning's career in Indianapolis only the Steelers and Patriots had more success (assuming you are defining success by Super Bowl wins). The Giants went to and won one and none of those other teams won while Manning was in Indy.

I will eat crow if something happens and I would be suprised too. I don't even think a move is out of the question here either but I have been hoping more for something in the line of a kick azzz coordinator then revamping the entire organization for an overrated big name like Gruden.

    JMO

Also to be honest, all the Pagano hating is making me kinda even like the man more in the last few weeks.

This has pretty much been my line of thinking for the last two weeks

I have to admit I saw this thread and did a double take to check the news to see if a Gruden thing happened "for real" and well it HASN'T and I see no real information on it to begin with that is from a true reliable source.

I agree we have speculation and rumors going on but as of right now Gruden is NOT HERE. Why are you all doing this at times? If/When we do get some new coach and if it happens can't we wait until then to speculate on team changes.......

But, right NOW until further notice we don't have Gruden and this thread title makes it sound like we do in a way and it does look like fantasy land from love sick Gruden fan boys when you open it.

    :hissy:

Is anyone bothering to read the first post before denouncing this thread? It's meant to be fun and speculative. I am far from a Gruden fan boy; just legitimately curious what people think his vision of the Colts would be given the overwhelming number of people who want him here. If you don't like it, move on.

No disrespect, But this makes no sense. So you hypothetically assume what someone would hypothetically do if they hypothetically join the team. And, what moves they would hypothetically make? Including the draft and free agency. Wow we are reaching.

Eh? That is the idea of a discussion board, to discuss what is a hypothetical. I don't know much about Gruden so I thought it might be fun to break down what a coach coming back after 7 years might do.

Respectfully, you seem to be implying that there is an emotional connection here, simply because he had bad things to say about Grigson. Would you feel the same if he provided good remarks?

As a previous co-worker, Middlekauff can provide valid feedback. It could be good feedback, or bad, and in my opinion they would both carry a level of weight. Of course, there are other factors to consider, but it's not absurd to think that Grigson wasn't highly thought of within the Eagle's organization. It's very possible that's the case in Indy right now.

The "BFF's with the owner" part just reads very juvenile to me and his words read like someone who is jealous more than anything. That's why I think there is some kind of emotional charge to it.

It's very possible that people didn't like him within the Eagles organization. It's been suggested before that he is difficult to work with here so I wouldn't be shocked to hear that.

To me, it lends more credibility, as they have worked together and have a better understanding of each other's work and capabilities. This is the thinking behind obtaining professional references in the working world, is it not?

I agree about references, but a reference from someone who seems emotionally influenced (here it reads a little juvenile) or who is giving poor insight doesn't hold as much weight. Put it this way: if Riddick or the Eagles GM were saying this, it would carry a little more weight for me than a former scout who PC was claiming wasn't a great talent scout. Granted I don't know anything about  MIddlekauff, I just was talking about that specific analogy.

Does the resume of the messenger matter when the message holds substance?  I mean almost all great NFL coaches are players with little talent who could only make it to some level of college athletics.

Is Steve Young's analysis inherently better than Trent Dilfer's because of his success?  Is Randy Moss' better than Keyshawn Johnson?  Just asking?

It's a little different because he specifically criticizing Grigson's scouting ability on the same team. If Dilfer and Young were on the same team and the former was highly critical of the latter then I think the argument wouldn't seem as substantive.

Brian Guntekunst is getting a lot of looks around the league for the GM position. See if Gruden would be willing to work with him since he comes with a good reputation and no baggage like Grigson. If it is a fresh coach, give him a fresh GM to work with, IMO.

Nice post (I ran out of likes, otherwise I would have given one)

  13. To take a break from just speculation on whether or not he is coming here, I wanted to instead look at what Gruden's version of the Colts might look like. What free agents/draft picks might he target? What assistants might make the most sense under him? How would offensive/defensive philosophies change? Thought it might be fun just to discuss.
