    Fair point there.

I'm an alumnus from Ball State, and also still a fan of the Cardinals along with my family. We know what true suffering in sports is like haha... 7 bowl games for football, with not a single win in the program's entirety.

And basketball? The last time they made the tournament was 17 years ago...

    ...

I guess I savor the lavish torment of mediocrity when it comes to the Cardinals. lmao

Ball State Alumni Pride! Chirp Chirp!

The Colts have arguably had the two greatest qb's of the past 50 years. One was tossed on the garbage heap by Daddy Bob and the other was cut by Junior. Johnny U wanted no part of the Irsay Colts for the rest of his life. Peyton doesn't seem to be openly bitter and knows there were 20 million reasons for being cut. But he can't be happy about the way he left town either. Both guys were reminded that there is no such thing as the Baltimore Colts or the Indianapolis Colts. When Irsay references "the Horseshoe," he really means the Irsay Colts.

What a load. Unitas was traded and only played four games for the Chargers before being benched and retired. Peyton has one of the most incredible set of circumstances surrounding him being cut. Both were necessary decisions that no one wanted to make but had to make. There's nothing to suggest Manning was upset with what transpired, given that it benefited him in the run.

I agree that a career should not totally be defined by SB championships but those titles do hold a lot of weight when talking about great players. More importantly, the QB position. Dan Marino's career was not wasted just because he didn't win a SB. But when we talk about QBs, championships do matter quite a bit. It is the most heavily scrutinized position on the field. However, if we are talking about other positions on the field, the number of championships doesn't matter as much. QB is the one position where number of championships hold a lot of weight when determining greats. Fair or unfair, that's how it is

Way off topic but I have always felt championships hold too much weight when discussing quarterbacks. Marino never had the talent (offensively or defensively) or coaching that Montana had around him and yet for some reason championships seem to be the only thing that matters when comparing those two.

Irsay could've VERY easily made the deal w/ Manning & Gruden happen, but his ego & undying love for Ryan Grigson got in the way.

Wish I could open it to read. Are they actually sourcing anything? I still just have a hard time believing Irsay gets in a room with two guys he wants and lets Grigson and his ego get in the way there. He hasn't had a problem cutting ties before, yet Grigson is the hold-up? Just seems bizarre to me. Maybe it's true.

  5. To jump in on the Houston thing:

    A) People can say that QB is their only problem and that they are only an average QB away from being scary (which I would contest but beside the point) but that is a BIG problem to have. The money they have tied up in Osweiler presents all kinds of problems for them going forward and they have some of the least cap space in the league. Point being: unless they hit the lottery in the draft they are not going to have a good QB anytime soon.

    B) I don't think Houston is more talented across the board. RB's and O-line seem like a wash to me and I would take our WR's and TE's over theirs. Obviously defensive is another issue, speaking of which...

    C) The idea that they are a top defense that will get better with JJ Watt is flawed for two reasons in my mind: no one knows how healthy Watt will be, back injuries can be career-altering for defensive linemen and that Houston is very dependent on breakout seasons from several players. Lets see if they can put together back-to-back good seasons before claiming they are some awesome defense. It's not like Andrew can't move the ball against Houston. I also think awarding Houston the best defense title based on total yards allowed by itself seems dubious at best.

    D) They hung around with New England but were incredibly fortunate to be in that position. Getting three turnovers won't happen often and the way O'Brian coached that game gives me confidence that he isn't some genius that's going to outmaneuver us all the time. Essentially, I think Houston will be the top contender in our division but they aren't running away with anything yet.

I get what you're saying. Marino and Tomlinson aren't role players though, they were the leaders and they were, unfortunately, on the side of bad luck. Yes, they will be hall-of-famers, Luck may not be a hall-of-famer though. He's far from a shoe in. He just doesn't have the team around him or any realistic chance as of now to win one. It's almost like he's just going through the motions until there's some change at the coaching level or talent level.

Should have been clearer: "people will remember a great player who does not win a championship more than a role player on a championship team."

Agreed, we need a better team to reach the Super Bowl.

I have a friend who I played pokemon with. I won 2 City Championships, a State Championship, and a regional championship while I was there. He ended up going undefeated at nationals out of 2048 people before the playoffs started and lost in the first round. He never won any big tourneys. He would of traded that for a City or state championship in a heartbeat, despite the fact he beat 3 world champions in that tournament. Sometimes 1 big win defines your career. I went 5-3 at Nationals that year and missed the playoffs, yet everyone knows I've won big tourneys and that's how I'll be remembered. It matters to a lot of people, especially over time.

I understand your point but it's a little different in this context. I'm more suggesting that being a Hall of Famer (something people will definitely remember) should worth more than just having won a Super Bowl. I'm not sure whether there is a Poke hall of fame to compare this to but being in Canton is huge. People are going to remember a great player more than a role player on a championship team. Just because Andrew Luck hasn't won a Super Bowl in five years, doesn't mean he is wasting his career.

  8. 11 minutes ago, Jared Cisneros said:

Tomlinson set a lot of records, but I bet money if you asked him today, he trade them all away for 1 SB win. Matt Ryan has been in a similar situation as Luck, but at least he is in a situation where he has a solid team around him now. He's basically in the situation Luck hopes to be in when he's Ryan's age. Marino's career was wonderful stats wise, but it's an absolute shame he didn't win a sB. Again, he'd trade those seasons of elite pass throwing for a SB win.

My point being: failing to win a Super Bowl should not mean your career was wasted. Sure, people say the would take a Super Bowl over their stats but that doesn't mean their careers are wasted. It means a lot to be a truly great player. Too often, legacies are defined cut and dry by Super Bowls when they really don't have to be.

Luck has had a Very Good career here. He isn't wasting his career here. It took Peyton 9 seasons to win a SB. Perspective.

I also don't think someone who doesn't win a Super Bowl is "wasting their career" in a given situation. Did Tomlinson "waste his career" in San Diego? Is Matt Ryan doing the same in Atlanta? Did Marino do that in Miami? I think Luck is having a very good career thus far, hard for anyone to completely waste it five years in...

Yes that was 5 years ago before Irsay talked about "Star Wars" numbers and his disappointment in Manning only winning one championship(that doesn't look so bad now does it?)

Its one thing to let a player go it happens its another to crap on the guy for not winning enough championships for you when he's a large part of why this team is relevant today.

Irsay is a loose cannon in general being a drug addict and all getting arrested etc.

I'm sure Manning has nice memories of the Colts Irsay not that much though.

While I think the one day retirement ceremony is lame in general Irsay asked him to retire a Colt Manning declined.

If he really wanted to retire a Colt he could've Denver wasn't going to bring him back and I doubt they would keep him from retiring a Colt if he truly wanted to.

    He didn't.

I never understood why people think the "Star Wars" comment was a slap at Manning. Irsay is clearly referring to the model how the team is built leading up to that comment, so I thought it was a dig towards the GM if anyone. He praises Manning leading up to it so that has nothing to do with criticising Manning.

Irsay has plenty of personal problems, though all signs point to him very much being together since his latest arrest. Why would Manning even care about him being a "loose cannon?" it has so little to do with the day-to-day operation of the team. Jim has shown, if anything, that he does not make rash decisions, fire people without cause, etc.

Manning was placed on the retired list at the end of the season, he didn't sign a one-day contract to retire with the Colts, I would imagine, because it's pointless.

I would imagine he thought it would be superfluous, given that he had a nice retirement ceremony with the Colts; he wouldn't have gone with that if he had that big of an issue with Irsay personally. I just don't see the evidence for him not coming to the Colts because of Irsay.

I think i remember now...He was terrible at that point so I wasn't worried about it...Too bad, kid had talent..

True, if he had kept it together and continued to develop he could have been a  partial solution to our pass rushing problem. I think he's playing in Canada now.

  12. 1 minute ago, jshipp23 said:

I really didn't follow his personal problems...I just remember his rookie year he looked like he had potential to be a player...Next year he was a shell of himself and next thing you know he is gone...What personal issues did he have?

He was released by the Colts after getting caught two times with drug possession if I am remembering correctly.

  13. 7 minutes ago, jshipp23 said:

He regressed this year for sure , hopefully it was just cause he was hurt...2015 he looked ready to break out..Seems like a theme with this team..Rookies come out show flashes and then seem to regress with no explanation..Got to be the coaching. ..Look at Jonathan Newsome for example, he made some nice sacks his rookie year looked pretty good and was trash the next year..

This is true of several players but Newsome is a terrible example. His personal problems lead to his career falling apart.

Pagano pick.     Blast Grigs all you want but PAGANO has his hand in bringing in people.   Good GMs go get what the coaches want

im not a Grigs supporter,   But he gets a lot more grief than he deserves

Wait are we blaming Pagano for personnel decisions now too? I thought the center of rift between Grigson and Pags was the fact that Grigson was getting players Pagano didn't necessarily want or did I misremember that?

He didn't do that for Jimbo he did that for the Colts fans. I don't think he cares about Irsay either not so much for cutting him(blessing in disguise) but the comments afterwards and Irsay is just a loose cannon. Nobody with sense wants to deal with that.

Irsay asked him to retire a Colts Manning declined so he doesn't care about being a Colt that much.

Manning always said he would come back for the reunion stuff etc did you think he wouldn't? I don't think he cares about the Colts(or Broncos) beyond his time with them. He has more love for the Vols.

The retirement thing is stupid. It has nothing to do with Manning not liking Indy, he probably just didn't see the point. Remember his presser to announce he was leaving? He choked up, I believe he loves the Colts.

When has Irsay ever been a loose cannon when it comes to team matters? He's actually been. very calculated and reasonable usually.

To compare the world being flat to trying to understand why Manning is refusing Irsay?

I think is a bit of a reach.

People can believe that the earth is flat without proof.

People can believe Manning didn't want to come here because of Irsay without proof.

    People believe things without proof.

So are you saying... it is stupid to believe Peyton Manning (one of the world's most respected sports personalities) does not want to work with Irsay?

Irsay who has a well know history of problems and strange behaviors, to say the least?

He's saying there's no evidence of that and no real reason to trust it.

The problem is that the media and fans think their opinion is important.  There was no consensus among anybody who mattered.

And there is no consensus this year by anybody who matters.

Why do media think that their unsupported opinions are important.  The only thing that's important for the media to bring to the public is real news corroborated by two sources.

Dunno if they think they are important as much as it's their job to report.
