  1. What were the two positions predominantly being stated as needs this off-season? WR and DE! What have been the two major signings for Ballard? WR and DE. Ballard is great at addressing perceived weaknesses on the roster so he wouldn't have to go into the draft with obvious needs and positions he must address through the draft. This is the way you do it. Don't lock yourself into a position that will force you to make sub-optimal choices in the draft. It allows him to just pick the best player without having to worry about securing some base level of production at certain positions.

Houston for 2 years at $12M vs Smith for 4 years at $12.5M is a win for me.

I wouldn't want to have to pay out all 4 years to Smith and if we didn't and we got out of the deal after a couple years, then I would bank on Houston over the next two years to out-perform Smith in those 2 years.

    Solid move.

Pretty much all contract in the NFL have outs after 1-2-3 years... IMO if you are signing Smith who is young and getting better you want him tied for more years rather than less.

  3. Don't take this as a knock of our players, because I don't mean it like that and they played their butts off, but sacks are not all created equal and sacks is not the only production that's important... pressure is more stable year-to-year and generally better sign of pass-rush ability. A lot of those were clean up or coverage sacks, rather than the lineman beating their man.

Also... here's the best reason to go 3tech - we are not drafting for next season. When you draft in the 1st round, you draft with the expectation that this player will be part of your long-term future(5-10 years). Most of those sacks came from players you cannot really expect to be the long-term solution for the team. They might be able to hold the fort for a season or two but even then they are somewhat replaceable and if you get the chance to draft a game changer in a super strong DL draft, I wouldn't hesitate.

With that said IMO EDGE is bigger need than 3T, especially if you believe in Lewis as long term solution at 3T.  But I hate drafting for need so... if there is BPA at 3T at 26 I would still draft him.

    Interesting...

Before the draft, I'll be back for Deebo.

Here's one more... DJ Moore. I liked him a ton last year. He tested like an elite athlete though, while Deebo tested more like just a good athlete.

Interestingly enough, Lance Zierlein's comp for Moore was Diggs :D  Moore was 6'0 210, too... which comes off very close body type-wise too.

edit: So I guess, I would say ... slightly lesser version of DJ Moore... I had Moore with a 1st round grade last year and I will probably have Deebo with a late second value, which sounds about right for me.

    No player comp for Deebo...

I think his body type is confusing people, because he looks more like a RB than a WR and they have hard time projecting him because of it. Try to ignore his bulk for a moment. Think of him as an averagely sized WR for his height. Imagine he's 195lbs instead of 215... Imagine the same quickness, same route running, same ability to break tackles and gain yards after catch from the slot and same game breaking long-catch game. What do you see? Now add 20 pounds on top WITHOUT subtracting anything for it. Don't punish him for having a weird body type. He does what he does well with this body type. I don't think it's hindering him in any specific way. If anything it's probably helping him break tackles. He's not particularly shifty but that's not something out of the ordinary for most receivers. Not everybody is Parris Campbell. At least he has his bulk and explosiveness to gain YAC in different way than just making people miss by shiftiness.

but you also said he was rated higher in 2017 than 2018????

having a career year in 2018, but rated higher in 2017 is not computing with my old brain.

and wasn't AC out in the beginning of the season?? not sure that you would expect a line with an injured starter, plus two new guys to play well regardless. and smith wasn't even starting until like week 5 or 6, and that was at RG. Then moved to RT around week 8 or 9. the OL was a work in progress the first half of the season. not sure you can say AC was thing that made them good all of sudden. kelly was banged up early too.

Yes, when I said "last year" I meant 2017, when I said "this year" I meant 2018. The point is his best season so far has been without Quenton or much of anything good around him.

You're confusing me. What game was Q not beside AC? Q played 100% of the LG snaps last year.

Again, not saying AC is bad. I am say though that when you put an all pro G next to you, it makes your job a ton easier.

The 2017 season. Ballard is on the record saying that this was AC's best season and also he was graded in the 80s(top 10 in the league) by PFF. He did that with a trash OLine around him.

I don't understand the bold at all...

AC enjoyed his best season last year.    Ballard said he thought AC was playing the best ball of his career.     And that was WITHOUT Q playing next to him.     He didn't become good overnight this year.   He's been good for a while now....

Yep, his grade was in the 80s last year, which was a career year by PFF... and also by Ballard's evaluation.

In fact you can argue that the OLine continued being trash this season without him and only got its % together once he returned... this includes Quenton. The point is... the whole left side of the line(Kelly included) has been playing out of their mind once AC returned. They are developing quite a chemistry between them and they are playing well both as a unit and as individuals.

You know I'm a sucker for outside the box thinking....

But you may also know that I'm very conservative....    I'd prefer not to trade AC and I'd prefer not to get value from a player  (Waynes)  that plays a position that Ballard doesn't value as much.   I'd rather Minnesota throw back a different player that might appeal to the Colts more.    I just don't know who that would be?

Yeah. I would prefer we keep AC, but my scenario was in case it seems like Ballard won't be able to strike a deal and in case AC is looking for more money than we want to give him.

Waynes addition was just me getting cheeky and combining rumors. You can do it with just AC for 1st, if you prefer.

Kelly was actually ranked as a top 25 guy on some lists. Haven't seen Glow on anything.

Just because they had "their" best seasons, doesn't necessarily mean they're studs. If I had to rank our guys regardless of position, and purely on performance, I'd say it's 1) Nelson, 2) Smith, with Kelly and AC tied for 3, and Glow in 5th.

AC has been our best lineman consistently since he was drafted. Now this doesn't say much because of the horrible O-line play altogether for most of that period of time.

If I had to rank them last year it would be 1.a and 1.b Nelson and AC , 3 Kelly, 4. Smith, 5. Glowinski

  11. 13 minutes ago, Irish YJ said:

What is interesting, is that while ranked 14, he's graded at just "above average". He didn't even make "good".

Those are just designations based on the grade and are just by predetermined ranges of the grades. OTs have been having lower grades than defensive linemen for a while. Fewer OTs get the elite-good range of grade than DLinemen. It's just another sign of how hard it is to find good OTs.

Just an example... the 13th ranked EDGE defender in the league is Olivier Vernon at 86.3 grade... this is about 10 points higher than the respective grade for a similarly ranked OT(AC).

Thanks for this...   you beat me to it...    I was just about to make this very post when I arrived and saw yours.    Glad you made it.

The only thing I'd add is that I don't think Solder has been a top OT for a number of years.    If he was,  I don't think BB would've let him leave New England.   But I read that due to his bad back which he's had most of his career,  Solder couldn't be counted on long term.   That's part of the math BB used.    Also,  I read that the Giants weren't necessarily all that thrilled with the job that Solder did for them.    Not that he was terrible,  but he wasn't as good as they were hoping for.

Props for stepping up, Stiches.   Much appreciated.

What do you think about my out of the box idea?

couldn't find AC ranked on PFF. not saying he isn't, but I couldn't find it (please post if you have it handy).

here's PFF's end of season unit ranking summary. AC is not mentioned, but Smith ended as the 25th rated T of the season. If AC was graded high, I think they would have mentioned him along with Smith and Nelson.

Here's his end of season ranking:

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/nfl/players/anthony-castonzo/6174

No.14 among all tackles(again, this includes both left and right tackles). He was ranked no. 9 the previous season.

  14. 10 minutes ago, Irish YJ said:

I'm a fan of AC, but I'm not going to pump sunshine. He's solid, but I've never seen him on a top 10 or 20 list at position. I'm all for an extension. My point is that he's not worth the money that Nate got. And if that's what he demands, CB will let him walk. He's not going to settle though for a "short" term deal IMO.

AC is not elite, but he's been around top 10-15 OT in the league for several years now. Nate Solder is WORSE player than AC. And he's getting more money than AC.

AC was ranked no. 9 OT in the NFL last year by PFF. This includes both LTs and RTs. This year he was ranked no. 14... again including both LTs and RTs... and this is after he started slow coming back from his injury.

He absolutely is worth what Solder got. Every above average starting LT will get that money if he hits FA. Just look at what the starting OTs this year got and most of them cannot touch the level of play AC's been at for the last several years.

  15. I'm not sure if Little is the guy to go after, but I agree that Ballard might be trying to extend AC as we speak and if he doesn't like where it's going I wouldn't be surprised if he drafts another potential LT for the future. Little kind of fits because he's not ready but has great profile, but if you trust your new OL coach and Mudd with player development(seems like that's the main reason they picked Strausser... this is the main thing he's supposed to be great at - technical development of players), then you should be taking shots at raw but talented players that can be molded with time and work.

Dillard is kind of the best pure LT prospect of this draft(Juwaan Taylor being RT coming into the league). The thing is... we would be lucky if he drops to 26 so... what if he does? Would you draft him(or Jonah Williams, whoever drops)? It's kind of weird drafting LT in the first and letting him sit a year. Or... here's a wild one. What if Ballard decides to trade AC on draft day(in case he's not able to extend him)?* Last year the Bills traded Cordy Glenn in order to move from 21 to 10 in the draft. This is the equivalent of a high second, low first round pick. And AC is MUCH better than Glenn, so I think it's reasonable to expect a 1st for him. For example, the Vikings have a big need for OT and they want to run the ball + they are ready to win now rather than wait for an OT to develop. What's AC's best phase of the game? Run blocking... Is he ready to play winning football now? Absolutely.  Also... lets incorporate this one with another rumor - the Colts looking at trade for a CB. Trae Waynes has been rumored to be available for trade... So what do you say about...

AC+3d OR 4th round pick for Vikings 1st(no. 18) and Trae Waynes?

We draft Dillard with no. 18 and start him next to Big Q.

@NFLfan you are welcome to share your opinion on this one too...

*Disclaimer: I do NOT want AC gone. If it was up to me I'd do everything possible to sign him to an extension. Those are just hypothetical scenarios I'm going through in my head and letting them spill here since we are going a bit out of the box in this thread.

Very good one, the team would be much improved with this draft. Where did you do this mock? Doesn't look like fanspeak, just curious?

I decided to do a little different-than-my-previous-ones type of draft and this is how it turned out:

Some were downright surprising, as to how some players were available where they were, but I took it and ran!!! :)

The draft network has a draft machine/simulator.

I like most of your pick. I don't love the Rapp pick too much.
