Didn't we say that if he ran a 4.4 40, which he did, he could shoot up boards?

not really... i feel like I was the only one who was in love with Butler BEFORE he tested. I guess most people just thought he would test like Harmon did. I never thought that. To me it was easy to see on tape Butler is MUCH better athlete than most of the contested catch specialists in this draft.

I think people are going back to the tape now and rewatching it with new appreciation for what Butler does do well. A ton of analysts have bumped him a ton on their boards. Just watch what's happening at the draft network.

    More support for Parris Campbell.

He will end up very high on my personal board.

Can I ask you to take a look at a receiver I like and one that is around that whole group on the chart above of Harry, AJ Brown, Harmon, etc... It's Dillon Mitchell. Have you seen him? And if you have what do you think about him?

    So did I.

I wonder if field conditions affected Holyfield and Ferguson. That 3 cone situation with Ferguson is strange.

I don't know what the condition was... but there is footage of the Ferguson 3 cone. I cannot see anything being wrong with the field. It says he slipped FIVE times and that this was his 7th attempt(maybe he was extra cautious at the end, but even that information should give you pause about his balance and proprioception) :

Elijah Holyfield timed by media at 4.86 and 4.89 in the 40 at his pro day...

He was faster at the combine... I don't know what to do with those that cannot get better for the pro-day with so much stuff going their way and everything being set up for them to improve on their performance. I remember Teez Tabor being the same(ran worse at pro-day). IMO it points to more serious problems ... as in... failure of preparation, lack of determination and drive to improve, etc. I would be very skeptical of players like this. And it's a shame because i liked Holyfield on film.

Erickson actually seems pretty dialed in, and he's completely new to Indy.

Yeah... I've noticed him getting some info almost simultaneously with the big fish and now he even beat them to the leak. Good for him and for us as a fanbase.

And of course, Holder follows with:

I wonder... do you think he has a source or he's just relying that the other guy is correct and want to seem in the know? How many times can he write a variation on the same tweet 5 minutes after someone else breaks the news, without he himself breaking ANYTHING... EVER!

Just listened to LZ on his "colorful" reports. I get it, the redundancy is ... redundant. But you can't just make up phrases that no one understands. It's not an English assignment, it's a scouting report. The people reading it should be able to visualize what you're telling them without struggling for interpretation.

If you're writing a book, and you want certain things open to interpretation and for the readers to fill in details in their mind, colorful language and made-up phrases and whatnot are great. For a scouting report, you should be relating facts that everyone understands in a uniform way.

Good discussion in that interview, though.

Oh I completely agree... especially the first one you posted was incredibly vapid and confusing at the same time. I was just sharing his explanation about it.

They also ask bad questions at pressers, IMO. Holder is the ring leader here, even though he's probably the best writer of them, he asks horrible questions.

I honestly have no idea what they teach those people in journalism schools. I cringe everytime they ask something of the sort "how exciting is it to...", I swear it's like they are fishing for soundbites only so they can write their 200 word columns and be done with it.

and as I'm typing this... here is one that might have some insider info:

    Pro Day Report – Toledo

A half-dozen receiver coaches from around the league were on hand for Toledo pro day to watch the trio of pass catchers workout, including two who participated in the combine.  Here’s the latest.

The Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Bucs, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers were four of the teams who had wide receiver coaches on hand for the workout.  The receiver workout was run by Nick Caserio of the New England Patriots.

Combine participants Cody Thompson and Diontae Johnson stood on their combine numbers but participated in position drills.  Each stood out catching the ball and Johnson also looked good fielding punts.

This was an important workout for Diontae Johnson as he struggled with consistency late last season.  His ability to effectively produce as a slot receiver has many people believing he will be drafted in the middle of day three.

Both receivers met extensively with the receiver coaches on hand and Johnson,

Hey now, Holder's good for saying he knew/had a scoop about every trade/cut/signing after the fact...lol

But seriously, yeah, doesn't seem like our local guys get a lot of scoops. Don't know why that is really, especially because most of our local guys are really pretty easy on the Colts in the media. Not that that's a bad thing.

I guess in a certain sense we should be happy because it shows Ballard is running a tight ship and not much leaks until its done or someone outside of the team leaks it(agents to the national media).

  10. I've been wondering... what are the local reporters and beat writers good for? How is it possible to not get a single story on the team before the national guys or the team announces it? How can they be this in the dark about what's going on with the team? Does NOONE of them have any insider info... doesn't anyone have personal relationship with any of those players that might give them info?

We are waiting for the Field Yates and Schefters and Rapoports of the world to tell us who is visiting our facility and where our own FAs are now..

"Gets separation coming out of breaks at the top of routes"

It's okay to say the same thing about different players. The advantage to doing so is that we can easily compare one report to the next, instead of trying to translate colorful phrases into football terms.

This is one my favorites, on DK Metcalf:  "Rushes through pattern ingredients rather than developing their flavors as a route chef"

     O.o

I don't know if those are Zierlein's reports but you can find an interview with him here talking about how he writes his scouting reports and how he tries to keep it fresh and interesting and not regurgitating the same terms, about using flowery language, etc:

I haven't gotten back to Ridley yet. Don't know if Cosell has posted anything on him so far...

This is the podcast where he talked about Riley Ridley a bit, I posted it earlier(cutting out the rest and just leaving the things he said about Ridley):

Riley Ridley - I like Ridley a lot. Traits exceeded production. has the desired combination of size, length and movement. Very good feel for how to run routes and defeat both on and off man coverage. Combine test not great but he showed refined sense as a route runner, very detailed, understands how to attack the leverage of corners and to create separation at the top of his route stems.

  13. From what I've read, the issue is not deemed serious and teams don't seem to be too worried about it. He was given the green light to participate in all drills, which is not something that has happened in previous cases of such conditions being found out during the combine. It was a known issue before the combine and he had been cleared to play with it and was cleared to do the tests at the combine by doctors.

If I understand the situation well, it won't affect his draft status significantly at all..

Not a huge fan...especially as a 2nd round pick. After he got everyone's attention at the Senior Bowl...he seemed to become a favorite around many Colts fans for various reasons. So I watched a couple of games. He's a solid prospect...just not one I would prioritize over others in this class (or be comfortable passing on to draft).

    Parris Campbell...on the other hand.

Yep, feel the same way. I was very skeptical about Campbell in the beginning of the process, because I got stuck on him playing almost exclusively in the slot and on gadget plays... but at the end I just cannot ignore the playmaking ability... he is spectacular playmaker. He will be one of my top rated receivers on my board.

IMO if you cannot make Parris Campbell work in your system, the problem is with your playcaller/coordinator rather than with the player and you probably need to be looking at a new offensive playcaller/coordinator... there are just so many things you can do with a player like him. I love his tape. So fun!

Seems like those things could be fixed with a good nfl coach and good wide receiver coach. Wouldn’t that be something to draft a hometown kid.

I'm not sure how much this can be fixed. Some of it might, but I doubt it becomes a strength. He doesn't seem to have natural instincts for tracking the ball and is consistently late to react to it.

The good thing is he is fast and he does have some nice route running ability. I wouldn't mind drafting him for sure, but IMO the value for him is good late 3d-4th round rather than in the second.

Anyone know where this guy is projected to go in the draft?

Very wide range. Late 2nd to 4th round. He's a bit of a weird evaluation. Explosive and can separate, but doesn't have great ball-skills... doesn't track the ball well, doesn't catch the ball away from his body, lets it into his body way too much and thus is not great in contested catch situations. Has some YAC ability due to his athleticism.
