The new rule change effecting kick returns should not be underestimated. There will be many more returns this year. The Colts could really upgrade that position by drafting Cooper Dejean at 15. They would get an outstanding corner in zone coverage that would start opposite Brents and one of the top kick returners in college last year. Dejean is a first round talent and has been mocked to the Colts at 15. So Dejean seems like a great pick at 15 for me. I think he has to be in the mix.

I’m glad we brought all of our guys back. I’m glad we are returning all 25 starters. We are now going to find out this year if AR is our franchise quarterback. We have a solid roster with no major holes that need to be filled. And the draft is still in front of us. Ballard’s main objective was resigning our own but we shouldn’t lose sight of where he took swings to upgrade the roster with outside FA. Hunter was an ER who would have been an expensive upgrade. That’s with Paye and the other ER on the roster. The second was corner with our interest in Sneed. So for me I would not rule out Ballard adding a veteran upgrade at either of those two positions. It doesn’t have to be just FA. He still could pull off a surprise trade like he did with the Buckner acquisition. It doesn’t necessarily have to be with our first pick either. It could be a second or third or future pick. The fact he saw those two positions as major needs he was willing to consider paying for should not be forgotten. There is still plenty of time and teams circumstances are constantly changing. Brandon Beane said the Bills received the call from the Texans on Monday. Anything can happen. Especially this time of year. So I think Ballard is still open for business. We have our core back. Now we will see if he can still find a way to improve the roster. And hopefully add another veteran or two.

Texans turned around their franchise in like one year while Ballard is heading into year 8.
They turned it around last year with Stroud. This year has yet to play out.

Exactly. They really didn’t need to make this move. It’s just a luxury at this point.
I could see the Bills winning this trade. They have an extra 2nd in 2025. They could trade up this year with a 1st from 2025 and go and get a receiver. They might try to trade for Higgins or Aiyuk. They now have some interesting possibilities.

We are now the only team returning 25 starters from a year ago. Minschew was a backup who had to become the starter for the vast majority of the season. With Minshew that team won 9 games and just missed the playoffs. This year AR and JT return to start the season. All the teams in the playoffs lost starters and teams with losing records lost starters. The Colts lost no starters from a 9-8 team. I think that leaves Ballard in a very good position entering the draft. In the draft could he draft someone to replace Pierce, Jones, Paye, Woods? Maybe. But he isn’t forced too. We will see how it works out. For me returning all 25 starters is a very positive sign for the future.

It only makes sense if that de is better than who we have if he isn't then it doesn't make sense as it would be a panic move
That’s what I said. You wouldn’t do it otherwise.

Diggs is now four years older from when he went there for a 1st rd pick. His average years per catch has dropped with Allen as his quarterback. And he now has become a distraction and headache for the team with his behavior. They traded him and incurred a big dead cap hit for a reason. They decided to cut ties anyway. That says a lot.

It’s been 8 years. We know who he is by now.
Except now he has a coach and hopefully a franchise quarterback.

I don’t think it’s the actual players they are getting. It’s the fact Ballard doesn’t seem to care enough to try and improve this team.
He tried to sign Danielle Hunter but lost him. Looked into Sneed as well. I think he was trying. There is a long way to go until the season starts. Bills just pulled off this trade today. He could pull off a trade anytime. The off season is a moving target. No need to panic this early. I’m not conceding anything to the Texans this early.

How so?
He’s been a distraction and a problem for the Bills since the end of the 2022 season. He blamed their playoff exit on Allen not getting him the ball. It carried over into last year and didn’t improve. He and Allen barely speak and everyone who lives in western New York knew this was just a matter of time. The Bills are Allen’s team. A prima donna receiver does not have a place there.

So just waist another year evaluating. That sounds like a dumb plan.
No choice really. Run it back with your good players and hope your young players make a jump. Hit on a few draft picks and hope AR is the real deal. He’s the big unknown.
-
Tbh we really don’t know if AR is the real deal. He was injured twice in his first season and missed like 13 games. He has potential for sure but there is still the unknown with him. The Texans know for sure Stroud is the real deal. He showed them playing the full season. I would bet if AR had the season Stroud had Ballard would be making a few moves the fans would like. Not to worry. He needs to strengthen the secondary some more and then we can compete with the likes of the Texans. Especially if AR is the quarterback we think he is. Remember Diggs didn’t get Allen to the Super Bowl like they were hoping. Not to worry.

The Texans mean business.
I think it might make sense to sign Simmons or Diggs right now.

Wow! That's really cheap! Still leaves us some space to make another move if we restructure someone.
Maybe we do make a move for Diggs or Simmons after all.

Why would we replace Thomas on special teams? That's where he belongs.
Fine. Just don’t let him play safety. That’s not where he belongs.

Scott is going to get at least a year. They haven’t even seen him yet. Thomas while not great at safety last year is very good at special teams.
I'm guessing we could find a replacement on special teams for Thomas. Lot of players to look at after the draft.

We are good at SS now, Blackmon is a veteran starter in that role and I think Cross can play it well too. Nick is still just 22 and is trending up.
I can live with having Jags at FS but we still need CBs. I dont care what scheme you run you cant be as weak at corner as we are, teams will exploit the matchups
I think having a good veteran FS helps cover up the inexperience of the CBs. I think our corners should be expected to get better in year two. I still want to add to the room though.

We’ll see. They now have four safeties on the roster that probably aren’t getting released plus Denbow so they might be out of bodies at the safety spot. I wouldn’t mind bringing in another vet though, I am just not betting on it.
I don't think Thomas nor Scott should not be guaranteed a roster spot. Denbow too for that matter. I think adding a veteran FS should be on the table. Especially considering who's available. Especially Simmons who was clearly a cap casualty.

Contract year off a move from FS (position he was drafted to play) to SS (position this team also has Cross with R3 capital), in a season where they played a soft schedule on offenses. Plus, add in the injury this year to the prior injuries.
Them not prioritizing Blackmon is not a big surprise. And it didn't looks like other teams didn't either.
Sucks for Blackmon that so many Ss got released too. And a lot of those guys aren't even signed either.
Hopefully they sign a FS too.
Now Ballard knows what he's paying Blackmon. So he can now move on to FS. I'm guessing Diggs.

Be interesting to see what the money is. Sounds like Julian priced around, but didn’t get what he initially wanted. Makes sense to come back he for another year and prove his fitness and form. He is a good player infairness.
I'm hoping he has some incentives in his contract. That's a win win for me.

Chris is definitely patient with his players. Even when it looks like the writing is on the wall and both parties are going their separate ways, stuff like this happens. Welcome back Julian!
That's for sure. I hope there are some incentives for him as well. Win win if he makes them.

Blackmon is going into year five. He is your vet safety.
He's not a FS though. Cross isn't ready to start anywhere. Adding a vet FS would solidify that group.
