I don't tnink we know anything from the ESPN article or the rebuttal press conference except we are seeing a lot of spinning from all corners
I guess at this point it's a pr war
I did think when I read that ESPN article that it read like a tabloid article
Whatever sells I guess

Yes it's real. . . Women are actually more likely to abuse their partners then men are. But we don't talk about it.
See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil when it comes to women.

Message Boards and forums like this one and others that I frequent are comprised of a diverse group of fans... After any loss you will have those who fear the "sky is falling" and must fire or bench someone to please the masses... You also have the fans who regardless of the outcome sip their wine while wearing their "rose colored glasses" and never have a negative comment... That is the fun of these groups, how boring would it be if 500 members logged on everyday and said "Go Colts" high fived each other and left without an opinion??? No, most of us would rather voice an opinion to spark debate and conversation.... So if someone wants Pep fired or Fleener benched etc... State your opinion as to why or why not... Either way the comments do not make anyone less of a fan.... Just my two-cents ...
Seems like everyone feels differently about this
Some want everyone to be all positive all the times
Others can't stand exclusively positive posting
Same goes for negativity
be nice if people could express their thoughts without calling out everyone who is not exactly like them

we've had to clean this thread more than once
closing

see these types of posts are really blog posts rather than forum thread
Currently deciding if we should merge all 'fire somebody' threads and pin it, like we did for the trich posters
message me if you have ideas

thanks everyone who has posted so far. It may be that one post game discussion thread is the best. We're watching it and trying to figure out what will work best.

I guess I would counter with how you feel about the drug policy? I think that is what is needed IF the league is going to continue to police moral behavior. If course there is gray area but you still have to do it and put in the research and decide the penalties. I do not think the commish should be fired at all BUT I do think he has made some grave mistakes these past few weeks and I am just tossing out what I think would be a viable solution. In reality, policing moral behavior is a Pandora's box and not a road I would want to go down but he is too far entrenched now to stop.
not really getting the connection between conduct and drugs.
I guess I'm fine with them working that out on their own as well
Do you mean banned substances or abuse of legal substances?
-
That may be coming. We will see later today ...
well then I'd live with that.
It's their business
-
Yes, that is my point. He did that for domestic violence. He can do it with other moral issues. If he wants to continue to be the moral police than he needs to state his laws and punishments and then abide by them. That's how it works. Otherwise mayhem.
you don't see any gray area or uncharted territory here? Just perfect laws or mayhem and if the laws aren't perfect, fire him?
BTW nobody and nothing is perfect in the world, including this country.....somehow things are pretty good.....not perfect, we still have domestic violence and what not
Still we manage to all not be at each others throats most of the time.....except for maybe on this forum
-
Why do you think this is some crusade against Goodell? He has made some BIG mistakes. Or don't you see this? Any executive person in his position that made his decisions over the past three weeks would be under fire or just plain fired.
I don't really have an opinion on whether or not there should be a crusade. Even if I did, I think the owners can make that decision. Is that ok?
-
I think this thread should be retitled to......I already did not want Goodell as the Commish and now I think we can use this opportunity to rile up the masses against him
-
Because Goodell is the one that set up the moral police department in the first place. He made the rules and has been woefully inconsistent and incompetent in his application. These last 3 weeks are not the first time he has come under scrutiny for mishandling a disciplinary situation. It happened with spygate and bountygate and now of course the events of the past 3 weeks to the point that he is now having himself investigated.
Got it, it's about not wanting Goodell to be the commish.
makes more sense to me now
-
No. They should not be.
then why are people angry that they see a failing in the moral police department?
-
Have to admit this made me laugh ...there's an old sports adage..."you can only play what's put in front of you", I feel it applies to your interaction here.
To be honest a lot of the responses here make me question my membership of this forum, not agreeing with the coaching decisions is one thing, blindly bashing without substantiating your opinion is another. Problem is we seem to now be into a black and white scenario of either your a homer or whiner/troll. The middle ground for discussion is fast vanishing.
Well said, thank you.
I take issue also when fans are indignant that they have a right to complain but other fans can't complain about their complaining.
All of this is avoided if people state things in a more thoughtful way.
We welcome new members but, new members should take some time having a look around at what's been discussed already and endlessly......
Just so everyone knows, moderation receives a LOT of complaints about the complaining here and the 'Fire them' threads. I don't blame them, it's not fun.
We try to strike a balance here between fans stating opinions and keeping the boards enjoyable for everyone.......
-
Cleveland fires coaches all the time, sure they wouldn't mind us taking a page from their book ;)
Exactly
-
Many fans have had it out for Goodell from day one, This just fuels that fire, Also making a decision based on emotions usually does not turn out so good. Many don't seem to get that the owners and players are the ones with all the money and where the money lies there lies the power
I think the money and power plays into this. Just my impression. I've seen it brought up......we pay for this so we demand immediate......yada yada
I have no idea why people have to have immediate and severe penalties for 'his failing as the moral police' when they seem to also be hostile to his past role as such'
It's all circular to me. Anyway, I get moral outrage at corporations.......like the BP Oil spill and things of that nature. Gross negligence for profit that ruins businesses, communities, and the environment.
the NFL issue here is nowhere near that scale. I think people caught Goodell in what they perceive as hypocrisy and they like scandal.....and so here we are.
-
Then why did you say that? It is unprecedented, the mishandling. And the NFL is the ones that set themselves up as the moral police so please STOP blaming the media. It is beyond ridiculous.
You think the NFL should be the moral police?
-
I am sorry but you could not be more wrong. The NFL has failed miserable on many accounts the last three weeks. This isn't about abuse or domestic violence but the manner in which the NFL has handled or should I say mis-handled these very serious issues.
OK, I just disagree that the scale of public reaction is anything close to appropriate. 'failing miserably on many counts' 'mishanding very serious issues'....... translates to 'he gave the wrong punishment, said he had gotten it wrong, changed the punishment to what the public wanted, a video came out......and the public thinks he saw it and lied about it. Another athlete charged with abuse, team leaves him active.....and changes that the next day to what the public wanted.......turns out other athletes are guilty of things too (as are a lot of people).......and now the public is furious'
None of what the NFL did changes the abuse that occurred and none of it will prevent it from happening again......same thing with the public outrage, it's not going to have an effect on abuse.
Anger and outrage are dangerous. People justify extreme behavior because they are 'outraged'..... I am not a fan of that......ever
And I think the outrage in this case is misplaced and extreme.
I have been outraged by things before.......just never anything like this. If you choose to believe that because of these events...the NFL is perilously corrupt, that's your choice.
But I think the public wants to keep the 'scandal' going.......they want to see Goodell suffer......they want their anger sated.
It's very bizarre to me. I think we let this play out. For goodness sake there's an investigation on this so there will be further discussion. Meanwhile my impression is that people are making Goodell out to be this horribly corrupt sherrif, like this
-
Clearly loss of life is a big issue for anyone.
But the issue was to the player and to the victim and their family.
The league -- for whatever reason -- didn't take the heat it's been taking for the last month or so....
Your last sentence backs me up... "Where was the outrage....?" Exactly. Where was it?
For whatever reason, there wasn't. But in the last month or so, the outrage has flowed toward the NFL like Lava.... and the league seems powerless to stop it.
The league's inability to handle one disaster after another in a proper manner is what I'm referring to. That's why many view this time as the darkest in league history....
It's because people believe they caught goodell in a lie
That's what has them all fired up
Wouldn't be any outrage without it
I actually find this quite disturbing
Perceived pr blunder > criminal offense
-
It may not seem like it, but you're splitting hairs here.
The NFL and it's players are inseparable by the very nature of the business structure they've created.
1) Put on football games with the best athletes we can find
2) See how some athletes outperform others, even at this incredibly high level of competition
3) Market those athletes as the pinnacle of physical prowess, and convince people they are trustworthy
4) Use that trust to sell buttloads of ads and merchandising
This is the cycle of professional sports at its core. The league is it's players, and dark times for players (especially high profile ones, which as previously mentioned are the engine for business) are even darker for the league, because it threatens the very core of how they generate revenue. Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson are not important to the NFL, they are just names. What is important is that they have shaken the trust in the viewerbase to it's core, and that is terrifying from an NFL as a business standpoint.
Roger Goodel coined a phrase which was to be representative of the guiding principals of player conduct in the NFL "Don't tarnish the shield". This is precisely, almost eerily so, the perfect example of what he was hoping to avoid.
I don't see it
Players have done worse
There's something else going on here
-
Exactly. We don't notice until the TV tells us to. Till Facebook tells us to.
The neighbor has been slapping his wife around like Ali got slapped around by Larry Holmes in 1980 and it never makes a connection of any kind, but hey, Ray Rice slapped his woman, and by god we need to bring the gallows back, and put he and Goodell up as tribute to the victims.
Look at the anti-bullying movement. Is there any way to eliminate bullying from this planet? Of course not. It's human nature. It's what we do. So what do we do? Do we teach children how to handle it and properly defend themselves while at the same time teaching them that it's not acceptable to engage in such behavior otherwise?
No.
We teach them that it's wrong, that it shouldn't exist, and if big Jake is bullying you, you run to a teacher and tell them immediately. Kind of hard to do if big Jake is sitting on your back pounding on your head.
I know a guy with a boy in the second grade. There is a boy in his class with a "learning disability". (He can't read.) This boy bullies the other little boy, and the school DOES NOTHING because he has a "learning disability". THIS is the world we live in. Political correctness is ruining this country. RUINING it. No one can do anything about this bully because he has a "condition". That would be a violation of his civil rights.
No one wants to do anything about domestic violence until it's on TMZ.
No one wants to stop child abuse until someone famous is accused of it.
Nevermind that no one gave a crap before, they just don't want to see rich and famous people do it.
How about Phil Robertson. Remember when everyone % the bed over the things he said last year?
So what. Big deal. He has an opinion. We all do. The fact that he is on a TV show makes his opinion no more important than yours or mine or anyone else's. It's HIS opinion. Maybe you don't agree with it.
WHY IS THAT A PROBLEM?
We're soft. Instead of living with differences, we feel this insatiable motivation to go on an all-out crusade and abolish them and shun those who may think differently than we do.
We have bred and formed this idea that we as a society are supposed to live in peace and harmony and everyone accepting everyone else and whatever they may do. Where does it stop?
How long before womanizers band together and start claiming it is their choice to beat women, and that it's ok and should be legalized?
And you better believe that if they did, there are those who would sympathize, and support their newly born "rights". We're steadily headed in a direction where we're all supposed to accept everyone else and their differences unquestioningly, and to do anything other would be incredibly wrong. Not to bring about another debate, but look at gay people. To the vast majority of the gay community it is NOT ok for you to have an opinion that what they do with their lives is wrong.
All the while it IS ok for them to have an opinion that what YOU do with yours is wrong. My mother in law is a lesbian and we have this debate all the time. Any time someone says anything anti-gay she goes off the hook about how wrong it is to think like that, and I have to end the debate by reminding her that that is merely her opinion, the same as whatever has her in a full blown rage is the opinion of someone else.
We don't all have to feel, believe, love, and accept the same things. That is a concept totally lost in society today.
This whole domestic violence sideshow is a by-product of that. No one cared until a famous person did it, and now it's time to save the world, and bulldoze anyone in the path to do so. People see this stuff on the news and Facebook all the time. It didn't become an issue until it happened to be involved with the NFL.
And now the crusade is on.
Don't get me started about school discipline!
I will never shut up
-
You're free to come up with a worse week than this.......
The closest I could come to this was the week Kennedy was assassinated and the NFL played games anyway.
Other than that..........
I don't think it's a dark week for the nfl
I think it is for some players
-
So if I understand right. You are taking issue with people not taking issue with domestic violence until it occurred in the NFL and now that they are taking issue, you have an issue with them and believe it is faux outrage?
I think the outrage is faux
I think they are Inappropriately outraged at the nfl
It's not about abuse it's about wanting to rage at the nfl
They will not be enraged at the next case they here of unless it is connected to the nfl
Ultimately I think it's about enjoying vilifying someone
-
This country has gone SOFT. Entirely soft. Any time something bad happens to someone, we as a nation decide we have to rise up and crucify whoever we feel to be responsible, and make sure it never ever happens again.
Agree except this. My issue is that people DON"T take issue with domestic violence the same way. Mostly it's ignored. So it feels false to me, this outrage.
Bad things happen every day and nobody really notices.......especially not to this extent. I don't know what all this is about but it is not about women or children imo

I really hate it when people refer to polical correctness by way of supporting their view
As if it even means anything in this case
All you can really say crow is that you like him and you believe him
And that's fine but don't make him out to be a hero here
