  1. For me,  the reason I'm very curious about John is how Grigson talks about him.    If you watch a Grigson interview and he's asked about Ulrick John, Grigson's face lights up...   his voice goes up...   he loves to talk about him...   one gets the feeling that Grigson thinks he's found a diamond in the rough.

Though he's currently listed at 300,  I believe I've heard Grigson reference him at 315.

I think he's someone we should all keep an eye on this off-season and pre-season.

Either that or he is just happy to be asked a non nonsense question.

  2. cap wise after this whole this we'll be screwed. Next year we need to also cut DQ, Gosder, Restructure cole, and extend luck to lower cap hit

I agree on the first two but disagree on the last two. We can't restructure cole because he will have only 1 yr left on his contract and we are not going to extend him. Extending Luck will almost certainly not lower his cap hit in the first year.

  3. Yes, Chapman was good last year...far more of than not.  And that was only his first year as a full time starter.  A guy like Wilfork would be great as a stop-gap for another year, maybe 2, to see how much more Chapman can progress.  There is zero reason, however, to give up on Chapman at this point.  We're far from knowing what his ceiling is.

The biggest problem with chapman last year is his play declined over the course of the year. I'm not sure he has the stamina to play a whole season at NT yet. Not that I blame him its probably the most physically demanding position but having a vet in front who can take that load would be a big boon for a playoff run.

  4. I wouldn't be surprised if our first pick was an offensive lineman. There are some good ones this year that could potentially fall to us. Other than that we might grab one in later rounds as a project and roll with the line we got.

  5. So for dead money. That would be the guaranteed money divided by the length of the contract?

Not quite. Signing bonuses are spread out over the contract and if cut before the end you get that dead money from other years. The colts have not been doing big signing bonuses. Instead we have been doing things like guaranteeing the first year or two of base salary and guaranteed roster bonuses which are not spread out. So that means after a certain year in the contract almost all the guaranteed money is in the past and you can cut them no problem.

  6. When you say "mortgaging the future," I assume you mean sacrificing your ability to keep your core intact. Having done a bunch of projections, and looking at the contracts that guys like Clint Boling and DaNorris Searcy got, we could have added some really good free agents without "mortgaging the future."

You're absolutely right about the first rounders.

As you've pointed out before free agency is not like shopping. You can't always get the guys you want even if you are willing to pay.

  7. Can we stop with the "Camp Body" label?

This team isn't exactly an elite team. Anyone can come in (outside of QB) and win a starting job or at least significant playing time

Calling them a camp body does not mean they won't make the roster or that they won't start. It is simply saying they were not signed with the idea that they would be either A) starting or B) the primary backup though they have the chance to win those spots.

  8. How many of those teams have Andrew Luck?

It sounds like you don't want a good defense because those three teams didn't make the playoffs

Yeah I didn't get that comparison either. The teams in question were using a good front 7 to cover up for their crappy secondary. The Colts have been using a good secondary to cover up their crappy front 7. So improving the front 7 even if the safety play falls off a bit wold still be a massive improvement.

  9. Too easy, you are not giving this enough thought. There will be multiple BPA at multiple positions likely with where we are drafting. We need more than this

If you give every player an overall draft grade and then rank them the BPA will be the one at the top. If he is a position of need and fits our team then draft him.
