  1. And his name is Austin Collie! If he stays healthy he will be going to the Pro Bowl.

Clark, Collie, Wayne and Garcon all healthy is better than what Manning had in 2004.

I agree about Collie. I've been a fan of his since the first preseason game I was able to watch him play. Also don't forget to add Gonzo to that list. Wayne, Collie, Clark and Gonzo on the field there is a not a D in the NFL talented enough to cover them all.

    Here's a story for you.

I wear my Colts hard hat whenever I have to go a job site. Being in Southern California that hat is not very popular. Anyways I'm walking around a building at 29 Palms Marine base and the Project manager from the mechanical contractor comes up to me and says, "o I take you're a Colts fan?" To which I reply in the affirmative. He says, "[w]ell you'd probably like my neighbor." I say something like why is he a Colts fan too? He answers, "in a way, it's Austin Collie." So I tell him to let Collie know he has a huge fan in the California hi-desert. A couple of months later after the project is over and the contractor goes back home he sends me an e-mail and says he told Collie he has a fan in the hi-desert to which Collie replied, "I knew the Colts had fans all over the country but that's a first."

Not a very exciting story, I know.

  2. Well gee that's pretty obvious. I would hope one would read that's a given. Doesn't change the fact some of those pro-scout teams were identified preparing earlier than the others, Pats and Eagles is all I remember but there were a few.

So, it's obvious now but an hour or so ago it was only the Pats, Eagles and perhaps a few other teams that do that?

the Pats, along with the Eagles and perhaps some other teams study FA way in advance.

Through-out the lockout there were player personnel people talking about they've watched film on every possible free agent/cut player numerous times.

The answer to the question (if one wants to assume that getting Haynesworth is a good deal, I for one am glad to see him go to the Pats), is because BB and the personnel people are not afraid to be wrong. Bottom line. Kraft has the money to pay these people and if they don't work out, BB moves on, if they do work out then BB looks like a genius. The fact is for every Randy Moss type move the Pats make they make two moves like Stallworth and Colvin.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't think there is anything wrong with that approach and if a team is able to do that and stay under the cap and stay competitive then more power to them. It's not because the Pats organization does something more or better than many other organizations. (Other than illegally taping but that's another story. :neener: Had to throw that in there.)

  3. I hope the younger LBs can step up, or we're gonna have some troubles.

I think Conner and Angerer will be fine. I think Angerer is going to be going to some Pro-bowls in a couple of years if he stays healthy.

Conner seemed to be the Colts best run stopper at LB last year but he's not great in coverage and that is not good because as the WILL he is responsible for a fairly large zone and he just didn't appear to have the lateral agility to react quickly enough in the zone once the ball was in the air. So it will be interesting to see if he's improved on that this year.

I would also like to see them try Wheeler at WILL. As I mentioned above, he really doesn't seem strong enough to play the SAM effectively and he could be blocked by a TE. Moving him to WILL would focus more on his athleticism and less on his strength letting him flow and fill more than engage and maintain.

  4. Someone needs to tell bigblueshoe that 72" is 6' not 6'2".

I thought Wheeler was played solid last year. Nothing great but he was typically where he was supposed to be. His biggest problem was he doesn't have much pop or explosion when tackling, he just kind of wraps up and drags down. That, IMO, was the reason they moved Angerer into that position. He made some read and react mistakes but when he got to the ball carrier it was usually with some pop behind it.

  5. To answer the topic, the Pats, along with the Eagles and perhaps some other teams study FA way in advance. They don;t take a wait and see approach as some teams do. They know who will probably be available and who will sign long in advance. This is all done behind the scenes.

Then when FA comes they can pull the trigger right away which you have to do these days or lose out.

Umm just about all teams do this. They even have an entire department called the Pro scouting department. Their job is to look at possible free agents, possible cuts releases, study film on them so they can make recommendations.

  6. That's an interesting article and thanks for posting but no where in that article does it say.

The previous year Archie told the NY jets that if they guarenteed they would sign Peyton as the 1st overall pick he would enter the draft. The NY jets declined which allowed the colts to draft Manning #1 overall in 1998.

The article goes on to something that is a direct contradiction to your statement.

Of course, there's no guarantee Manning would have come out even if Parcells had promised not to trade him. But it was strange for Parcells not to even make a pitch for him.

And you could make that argument for any player on any team... they got lucky to get him because if... Luck is nothing more than the place where hard work and opportunity meet.

  7. Posluszny was signed by guess who... the Jaguars, and Quincy Black was resigned by the Bucs.

Man, I looked up both of those guys on NFL's draft tracker before I posted anything.

Oh well, those were just two LBers I would rather have over Sims.

  8. The Redskins are an example of what happens when a team uses FA to build a team.

The Patriots only get a guy for one year, a cheap year particularly, and then trade him for what? Draft picks. They build their team through the draft.

In the last six seasons, how many teams have made multiple Super Bowls? 2. The Steelers and the Colts. Why again aren't we a great team? Unlike the Steelers, we haven't missed the playoffs during that stretch. We are always in a position to contend. No other team can say that. The top teams aren't making huge splashes, short of perhaps the Jets. Even then, New England will have a say in their fate.

Threads like these are started only by baseless whiners.

Well said Doogansquest. I fear though this will primarily fall on deaf ears.

  9. Not for long... all of the teams we have close games against are getting better and we're not. Manning already carry's the team and makes up for a bad defense. Mix that with teams that regularly give us close games getting better and it spells disaster.

Teams have supposedly been catching up to the Colts since 2004.

I will believe it when I actually see, not just because some team signs some free agents.

  10. Btw problem causer... I didn't give you the negative rating.

I don't even know what the negative rating is or how to give/view one. So that doesn't really matter to me.
Seems others think your out of line as well. Roids are burn arentthey. lol lol lol
If that makes you feel better then so be it. I find it funny though that is your only response. Oh well, many people would rather go by little sounds bytes than facts.
take a pill man. Chill, there's gonna be football this year. :)

I'm not the one getting upset and crying about being insulted.
  11. I'd rather have Paul Posluszny, I know he's a MIKE but in the Colts system he could play either the WILL or SAM position and would be an immediate upgrade. Or Quincy Black from Tampa.

That being said, I think a line up of Conner (WILL), Bracket (MIKE) Angerer (SAM) with Wheeler and Trip as the primary back-ups will be a good LB corps this year. If the Colts sign Session (and if he plays like he did the last two games before his injury not like the first 5 or 6 games) then all the better.

  12. I think we may be able to regain some of that continuity starting this year. We have lots of young talent in Castonzo, Ijalana, Pollak (who has been playing better as he gains more experience), Link (who played well subbing in for Diem), CJ (a dependable, versatile lineman) and McClendon (who could be playing guard or center). Diem needs to go in my opinion and Saturday only has one year left in him before he retires. Let the guys gel together this year, insert a new center next year and we should have a decent amount of continuity on our O-line. I could see a lineup consisting of those guys being our starters for the next 10 years.

I agree about Saturday and about the young talent, except for Link. I think Link has some tools but, based on his play last year, he is too weak to be an NFL lineman and I don't think he played well subbing for Diem, there was a huge drop off in both run blocking and pass blocking on the right side in the Jets game. And when he subbed for CJ the Colts had two of their worst running games of the year. Since Link is not eligible for the practice squad and if the Colts re-sign CJ I do not see Link making the final 53, especially since CJ can play RT and LT.

  13. Better get a big gulp for that koolaid.. so if you think Manning had so much time to throw, I guess we don't have a problem with the o line.

Things can improve but it's not as bad as some try to make it out to be.
    You'll have to pardon me..
    No, I don't.

i must have been mistaken. Defiantly must have been around 1.9-2 whole seconds Manning had to get rid of the ball. My bad, plenty of time. Maybe you should go back, get a stop watch and write down how much time Manning had to throw. I'll accept your apology after wards. ;)

I have done that after games. I've done it for years actually since I used to post on the IndyStar forum. I don't do it for every game, I will usually only do it when someone mentions something ridiculous like, "Manning has no time to throw," or, "Manning has only 1.7 seconds to throw to his receivers." But the games I checked in 2010 was his second best time in pocket since I've been tracking, the best year was 2005 where he averaged 2.83 seconds. In 2010, Manning averaged 2.69 seconds in the pocket. I tracked the first Houston game (2.47), the second Houston game (2.71) and the Charger game (2.16). My criteria is snap, drop back and release of ball or snap, drop back and moving out of the pocket. I do not count moving around IN the pocket against the line because that is why the line forms a pocket... to allow the QB to move around.
You remind me of a guy I know of.. he's a know it all that starts an argument over anything. BTW... its all in your ignorant presentation that rubs me the wrong way.
1.) I really don't care what rubs you the wrong way. Two, I don't start an argument over anything, I only start arguments over anything that is untrue and not based on facts. Thank you for saying I'm a know it all though. Even though I don't really know it all, that is what I strive to accomplish.
You could have went about your disagreement in a much nicer, adult manner. Just for future reference. Off my soap box now. The end.

And you could have not taken part of a game plan that happened for for two drives in one game and extrapolate that out for an entire season as a negative for the oline. Just for future reference.
  14. Lay off the insults Koolaid drinker. "Is that how your mind works?" Really, now your reducing your rhetoric to insults. Really grown up.

How is that an insult? It's a legitimate question based on the fact that you took something that one announcer said during 1 quarter of one game and related that, fairly isolated, incident to an entire season. Is that houw you mind works? Do you do that with other things? If you child gets a bad grade in school does that mean that child gets all bad grades for everything that year? If your boss says you did something wrong, does that mean you do everything wrong? I would think and hope not.

And so what. Ya i went off of what an NFL broadcaster said. What's it to you. Get over it.

I guess that is how your mind works. If you want to base your beliefs from what CC states during a game and what a blog regurgitates then that is fine, just don't be shocked when people don't buy what you are trying to sell.

  15. Thanks for posting the video EdBriggs.

I don't know if I'd say amazing, it is a highlight reel after all. That being said there are some things he does that you like to see in a RB:

    1. Even when he's running sideways his shoulders are square to the goal-line. I don't care if you're a 185lb back or a 265lb back if you keep your shoulders parallel to the LOS you will break some tackles. The reverse is true as well, if you don't you will go down fairly easily.

    2. Has a nice stride. As great as it was to watch, very few running backs can have a long stride like Dickerson and still have power. He doesn't over extend his legs when running so he is in a good position to change direction, lower his shoulder or stiff arm without losing speed.

    3. This kind of ties in with point number one, he jukes from the core(stomach) down, not a lot of shoulder movement (except when he was lowering his shoulder)

    4. Lowering of the shoulder to take/deliver a hit seems natural not forced like it does with many running backs.

    5. This is a good and a bad, when catching the ball he gets his head turned around quickly and gets his shoulders squared quickly. The bad is... he is not a good receiving running back, he body catches too much.

    6. Has good vision in the open field. His peripheal vision seemed very good, he would make moves based on a would be tackler who was slightly behind him.

The okay, he has good speed but not great, he won't be outrunning many LBers or DBs in the NFL. But that's okay he doesn't need to be a home run hitter.

  16. I like the guys we have on our O-line now. With the addition of Castonzo and Ijalana, and hopefully the insertion of McClendon into the starting lineup, we should have a much much better O-line than last year.

They have never been able to settle on a line since Glenn retired and Ugoh didn't work out. If Ugoh had worked out, I think the line would have been much more settled by now but since the SB, the Colts have had (and I don't remember the exact number) but something like 13 or 14 different starting olines and a team just can't build continuity or consistency that way. Now last year where you have, IMO, players good enough to start building that continuity (I'm not a big Devan fan but he is good enough if you are keeping the 5 guys together) the Colts can't do that because of the age of Diem and Saturday.

I am a firm believer in the line can be greater than the sum of it's parts but it takes a season and half to two seasons of playing together to start get to the point. And the Colts just have not had that...

  17. This is the quote you are basing it on?

Manning had less time to throw, was constantly harried, and had no real pocket all season long. In the Chargers game (where Manning threw four interceptions) the announcers examined the tape and revealed that the ball was leaving Manning's hand less than two seconds after it was snapped. Philip Rivers had much more time in the same game.

Oh, I see because Chris Collinsworth mentioned that during one game then it can be extrapolated for the entire season. Is that really how your mind works?

Never mind the fact that it was late first/early 2nd quarter when Collinsworth focused on this.

Never mind the fact that it was the Colts game plan going into the game. To spread the field and have quick passes to negate the Chargers rush.

Never mind the fact that when Collinsworth was talking about it (first drive of the game), it was working.... The Colts were moved the ball down the field and scored a TD on the opening drive. The next drive when a pass was INT by by a DE or LB did they go away from it.

Never mind the fact that you can't portray something that happened for one drive in one game as common for the entire season

So, I say again.... Manning had more than 1.7 seconds to throw the ball to his receivers.

  18. One. I would not mind seeing the Colts sign D. Williams. Whenever you can sign a 28 year old RB that has a 5.0 ypc average for his career, that seems like a good thing to me.

Two. I don't think Williams can carry the team.

Three. Just because a few people say something for a long period of time does not make it true. Saying the team could not win 3 games without Manning is an insult to a) the other 52 guys on the roster, the coaching staff, and player personnel department, not to mention it a huge slap in the face to; one of the best TEs in the game, multiple pro-bowl receiver, pro-bowl center, two pro-bowl DEs, an under-rated LB and a premiere FS, etc.

I know the old worn out argument that Manning makes them better, true but only to the same extent that they make Manning better which is the good and bad of a team sport.
