  1. Like I stated in the other thread they are onto something with the tackle factor but I think it's a way from a finished product and is not a good tool to show played effectiveness. For example, Freeney has the lowest tackle factor of all defensive ends. Does that mean he is not effective?

  2. It is good to be back, after this lockout thing being settled :-).

No, Ndamukong Suh was drafted in 2010, not 2009. So, this URL above does provide 2010 stats. I verified Suh's stats though this one lists only 15 games:

    http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?archive=false&conference=null&statisticPositionCategory=DEFENSIVE_LINEMAN&season=2010&seasonType=REG&experience=null&tabSeq=1&qualified=true&Submit=Go

His 17 assisted tackle number matches up with the NFL site, so these are 2010 stats, not sure why only 15 games worth of Suh's stats are included here.

Eric Foster's numbers match up - 25 solo tackles plus 8 assisted tackles for a total of 33, same on the nfl.com site too

Hmm, interesting. I went by two things. One I clicked on Defense by team and then when I went back to the 2010 playoffs only it shows Moala playing in two playoff games. Obviously he did not play in two playoff games in the 2010 playoffs. Then when I do 2010 regular season only Muir is not on the list at all.

  3. Nice to see you Chad72. I posted this in another thread that mentioned the Advance Stats information.

The info is from the 2009 season. The 2010 only appears when you select the playoff option, but all it's showing is the 2009 season and the 2009 playoffs which were played in 2010.

Interesting numbers, none the less, but not reflective of last season.

  4. For some reason, all the fans seem down on him cause he's a first round pick. It always take D-linemen at least a year to really make an impact.

I think if Freeney or Mathis had missed a significant amount of time last years Hughes would have made an impact as a rookie. But most fans seem to forget that he was backing up two Pro-Bowl DEs who did not take many plays off.

  5. According to advanced stats (Tackle Factor. Google it, I don't want to try to explain it, but it's kind of like a QB rating for defensive players... Kinda) Moala was one of the worst DT's in the league last season. I've seen very, very little to be impressed with by him.

They are onto something with that tackle factor but it is quite a ways from a complete product.

A couple of items to note though. They do not have stats for Moala 2010 Regular season. What they are showing when you select 2010 (inlcude playoffs) is the 2009 season and 2009 playoffs which occured in 2010. So you are basing your opinion of Moala's play in 2010 based on stats from his rookie season. In the Colts run to the SB that year Moala had a TF of 4.00. According to the TF explanation DTs account for 5.6% of the tackles. So in a 4-3 D with two DTs that means each DT should get 2.3% of the tackles. Moala got 4% so better than expected.

Stats are a good thing. But you have to know how to interpet them in order to get use from them. I would highly suggest you not rely on Stampede Blue for your interpretation of the stats.

**EDIT** Chad and I were discussing this site and my above statement about it showing only 2009 may be incorrect. It is still hard to tell but I can see what Chad was saying. But the part about Moala having a TF of 4 in the playoffs is accurate. Muir and Foster both had a TF og 6 n the playoffs. Still good information but a ways from being a finished or reliable gauge of player effectiveness.

Further edit. For those wondering why I and others (including Polian) were impressed with Moala, especially in the 2nd half of the season. Go back and watch the games if you are able. The DT is responsible for a gap. The idea is to get through the gap and head towards the QB. If the DT cannot pursue the QB then he is to maintain his position in the gap. IN the first half of the season Moala rarely got through his gap to pursue but he did a better than average job holding his position. In the 2nd half of the season Moala was consistently getting a 1/2 yard to a yard deep into his gap which led to more QB pressures as well. He showed a lot of improvement during the course of his first full year of playing. That is why so many think Moala will do some big things this year.

  6. Eh, I'm not impressed. I was blowing by linkenbach.

    And I wasn't even there.

    That is pretty funny.

    Back on topic.

I don't know why anyone would be surprised. In his limited playing time last year Hughes showed the skills you'd expect from a first round draft pick. This year, feeling more comfortable with the D he should look really good.

  7. Coffeedrinker - nice summary. I gave up long ago trying to talk to people who only see doom. Common sense says that any team is no better (or worse) than the previous season unless they upgrade. Or they get worse if they lose key players or have key injuries.

We were a playoff team without key players and a number of supporting players on IR. We got back the keys and some of the supporters. We POTENTIALLY have some promise in our rookies. We have added a few FA's that may contribute. NO ONE CAN PREDICT INJURIES.

Now for our competition - Texans are the best by far. How many teams switch their D and make it work the first year? Jags improved, but does anyone not think after Garrards first bad game the fans will be calling for their rookie? Titans - look at Hasselback's injury history. He hurt his back running into the endzone last year. And IMHO, Locker is very inaccurate.

But that's not going to convince those who think that somehow we're going to regress this year. I know I'll have fun watching every game no matter the outcome. I feel sorry for those who can't enjoy a good thing.

You are a wise man Mr. Monroe.

  8. Yes, that was a huge missed opportunity, for sure! Also, Caldwell deciding to play it safe in the final two minutes of the first half was a crucial mistake! We have the best QB ever at driving down the field in the two minute drill, and Caldwell didn't even give him a chance.

Shouldn't that blame go on Manning? He's the one that makes the calls at the line. Or Tom Moore, he's the one who sends in the plays
  9. I loved the Hank Baskett signing, lets bring him back, since the colts rarely make the wrong move.

You just proved my point. Thanks.

Rarely, means it does happen just not often.

You were on the board then, you know. Most fans wanted the Colts to sign Baskett(he made that awesome catch in that commercial) after Gonzo went down with an injury. Very few fans thought the Baskett signing was a bad signing before the SB.

  10. One thing that many man people over look when talking about talent and ability of a WR, is there ability to block down field, Garcon is an excellent down field blocker after the play starts, and he is very strong for a reciever his size, I dont know how many db's this guy has planted with a stiff, and not to mention speed, he is the guy that ran ed reed down from behind to keep our playoff hopes alive. the guy is good, i easily place him above gonz in the pecking order.

You are correct it is overlooked and Garcon is a good blocker for a WR. But that is not a reason to put Garcon above Gonzo in the pecking order, especially when you have Manning at QB where it is more important for a receiver to get open, be where he is supposed to be and be able to catch the ball.

If Painter was the QB where the Colts were running the ball more and trying to chuck up long ones just to keep the D honest and hoping for the explosive play then I'd give Garcon the nod.

  11. And not to mention, they're overhauling their entire defensive scheme from a 4-3 to a 3-4 this year, and asking their best defensive player (Mario Williams ) to play off the line of scrimmage with his hands off the ground, which he's never done before.

    Yeah, that too.

  12. lol, trust me I am a Colts fan and you obviously don't understand sarcasm.

    Sarcasm I understand, idiocy I don't
Of course I don't think it'll be fun watching them get ran over, but with how the Colts look as a team right now its not as pretty as everyone thinks.
Nor is it as bleak as everyone thinks.
And yeah everyone does get older, but some are older than others smartbutt.
I'm guessing you received a fine public education with insight like that. :FBsmiley:
And I know its common for players to make make major strides in their 2nd year, but everyone here is thinking its absolutely going to happen, what happens when it doesn't?
What happens when it does? There
And quite frankly you haven't made any comments about how we don't have any problems other than saying that we don't have major problems
I've typed at length on what I think are the Colts weak areas and what I think are their strong areas in various threads. But I will give you a quick run down

    Manning - Best ever

Painter - I'm not a fan but I think he's more capable than most people think

    The rest - CAmp/Preseason arms.

Addai - Excellent back for the Colts

Brown - Don't know why he was drafted

Carter - Seems like a good draft pick

James - Does not belong in the NFL

Rhodes - will not make it out of camp

Rest - May make the team with special team duties.

    Wayne - Still a 100 catch 1300 yard 10 TD WR

Collie - One of the best WRs in the NFL

Garcon - Good for 45-65 catches a year and a half dozen TDs

Gonzo - excellent WR needs to stay healthy.

White - Will stick because he has good hands but Manning sure yelled at him a lot last year.

Clark - Top 5 TE and integral part of the Colts

    Tamme - proven, capable back-up

    Eldridge - Who knows

Diem - better than many give credit

Pollack - probably be the starting guard on opening day. Really improved last year

Saturday - smartest, best technical center in the league

DeVan - will probably not be a starter but a good back-up to have on the team

AC - Will start at LT by default.

    Back-ups - Solid corps of back-up onlineman

Freeney - Still strikes fear in OC

Mathis - Still strikes fear in OC

Moala - Showed last year why the Colts drafted him. Will emerge as a real playmaker

Mookie - Good for 4 or 5 plays then needs 2 or 3 series off.

Nevis - Appears to be a good draft pick and will probably get 15-18 snaps a game.

Rest - good rotational players will be interesting to see Anderson in the mix.

Brackett - under-rated MLB, played injured a lot last year.

Angerer - Future probowler at LB. Hs excellent tools will read and react skills did improve and will improve with playing time.

Conner - Good against the run, struggles against the pass.

The rest - With Wheeler and the addition of Sims this is a solid but unspectacular group

Powers - Has all the tools to be up there with the top CBs, needs to stay healthy

Tryon - Very good starting quality CB who will benefit from a full training camp with the Colts

Lacey - Solid nickle back should not play on the outside

Thomas - Should be the starting nickle back this year if he can stay healthy.

The rest, really don't know enough about.

Bethea - Excellent safety cornerstone of the DBs

Bullitt - Not great but makes very few mistakes

Silva - Not a fan but solid ST.

Alfava - Seems like he could unseat Bullitt.

The rest - Don't know much about. Personally I would like to see the Colts sign Whitner but if they don't I won't cry about how the team doesn't sign free agents or think they can't go to the SB because they didn't make the moves I wanted them to make.

    AV - clutch

MacAfee - excellent punter and kick off specialist. 35 yard rule will help the Colts a lot.

so why don't you enlighten me since you're the genius.
Funny how many people call me that, yet I've never said I'm a genius... I guess I don't have to.
And why am I so naive about the Texans being a better quality team than us right now. O-Line is just as solid as ours, Schaub isn't a Peyton Manning but arguably a top 10 QB, they have what seems to be a top 5 runningback, if that isn't the case its better than any back we have right now. WR depth is solid along with Andre Johnson who I would say is now better than Reggie. And Owen Daniels who wasn't the same this past year but still a quality pass catching TE.

Defensively, their backers are far better than ours with Mario Williams and Brain Cushing rushing the passers. Ryan in the middle is better than Brackett. So overall their front seven is better and their secondary is almost as good after we lost Hayden. On paper they're a better team overall, I may be going out on a limn here, but its an opinion that may be true if we don't fix some of our problems.

Because the line is not just as solid as the Colts. They are not much better at run blocking (they use a FB) and the pass blocking is not nearly as good as the Colts. Aj is a top receiver, none of the rest would be above 5th on the Colts depth chart. Daniels is a very good TE, about on par with Tamme. Their dline is a mess, Cushing post steriods is an average LB. Ryans is the real deal who is coming back from injury and the comment about their backers is hilarious and shows, even more so, why the comment was naive. Their secondary is very pourous (they ranked 32 in the NFL in pass yards given up). Daniel Manning should help but they still need a lot of work in the secondary. Foster had an excellent year last year. He needs to follow it up with another good year to be considered a top 5 back.
  13. I don't know how "bold" those predictions are, except the Garcon prediction. Garcon will not get 1000 yards receiving if the comment about Collie, Gonzo and Clark all being healthy comes true. Yes he caught 20 more balls last year than the year before but that only translated to 21 more yards. Also Manning rarely looked Garcon's way after the 1st half of the first game until Collie went done with the concussion. A healthy Collie means fewer looks to Garcon. Lastly a healthy Gonzo is a much better receiver than Garcon. Garcon has a nice 2nd gear, but Gonzo is a much better route runner and has much better hands.

  14. Gonna have to get used to this forum - sorry for interrupting any convo - not sure of the 'protocol'....

You're fine baglady. There is no protocol(beyond the forum rules). Many times there are two or three conversations going on in a thread. If the thread gets too far away from the original topic someone may suggest you start your own thread.

That's cool that you were at the game and got to meet Garcon's mother.

  15. you must be "that guy" i am sure you could take over tomorrow, and coach, g.m. and cure cancer

you are the man.wow all i wondered was why no help and end up in a debate with boy wonder!

I can see you are one of those that will believe what you believe whether it is true or not. When your arguments are shown to be ridiculous you resort to posts like this because you can no longer debate the merits of your own point of view.

  16. While I have been greatly advocating that we need no offensive help this offseason, our RB squad is far from good. I'd say average AT BEST even with Brown, Addai, etc. We are consistantly in the lower 1/3 of the league in rushing every year.

Yet Addai and Hart both averaged 4.3 ypc last year.
Just because the Colts have a history of drafting the dancers @ RB and everyone seems happy with it for the most part doesn't mean a power back is a bad move. Cadillac WIlliams 3.8YPC is better than Browns 3.8YPC because Williams did it hurt. I think if he could ever stop being injured he'd be great, another Bob Sanders situation here.
Now that is funny. Williams has been hurt since his rookie season? Because his 3.8 is his career rushing average. Last year he averaged 3.5 ypc. But I will end this argument here. even though I am not a Donald Brown fan, as I stated, there is nothing you could say that could convince me that a 29 year old RB with a history of injuries is an upgrade over anyone on the Colts roster other than J. James.
Also to say the colts wont invest in a RB is ridiculous. This is the Colts were talking about. They will always make the wrong moves in the offseason. As a matter of fact I see this as 10x more likely than a move that makes sense like a CB or an OL, or a true DT.

No, they don't make the moves fans want them to make, rarely do they make the wrong move. Doing things based on what the fans want.... that would be the wrong move.
  17. coffee i am sorry you are correct

    True, too true.
my opinion and mannings opinion on the colts needing

help are way off base. quote from peyton(I will take less if they will use the money to keep some

of our own, and GO GET US SOME HELP!, but what does manning know.

That would be an excellent point, except, that is not what Manning said at all. He said he will take less so the Colts can sign guys like Addai and CJ or anyone else they want to sign. Manning never mentioned anything about "go get us some help" and the only players he named were..... offensive players.
  18. lol, you remember two plays.

Um what? Two plays, did you by chance mean two players?
opinions can't be debated,so i am of the opinion that time of possession is everything and that relates to defense.
Opinions can be debated. Because opinions are the interpretation of facts. Sometimes the facts a person uses are not true facts (see global warming) and sometimes the interpretation of those facts is wrong (see your comment). TOP is only an issue if there is a large difference. Two, it is not just a factor of the defense. If the offense converts more third downs and maintain the ball for longer then they have a longer TOP.
and when manning is on the sideline for 40 mins a game that is not good, homer or not.goodtime for a timeout.

Ahh yes, the old technique of exaggerating an issue then trying to make a point of the exaggeration. The funny thing is, your example has happened one time and the Colts WON. In large part because of a monster game from one of the offensive players the Colts are getting back from IR. rotfl
