  1. Moss prob not in Indy.

A lot of people like Irsay's tweets, I think I'm the only one that doesn't...He can't ever come right out and say something, he's always gotta make a rhyme and he beats around the bush...Nothing he ever says makes sense...It's annoying.

I agree. But here is one tweet from irsay that is pretty clear.

    From August 1st.

Why do some of u guys want us 2 sign Moss? We got Reggie,Gonzo,Austin,Pierre?
  2. Heckendorf looks very good in those drills. It will be interesting to watch him during the preseason games. Any North Dakato State fans out there that can fill us in on him? How are his hands, etc.?

Gonzo also looks very smooth with his footwork and in and out of his cuts.

And my word, Collie runs full speed, stops-->cuts and is at full speed almost instantly.

  3. wow, im so sorry i made a spelling error, but i could not disagree with you more.

    It was just a joke.
you seem to agree with me that Moss plays differently depending if he is happy with the situation. But then you try to say he would be at the same level of play in Indianapolis as he was in Tennessee.
. yes because he would not be happy being the 4th receiving option in most situations (behind Wayne, Collie, and Clark)
Peyton and our system is not the same as Kerry Collins and Rusty Smith in TEN. Did u see his TD catch with one hand against the Jets (over Revis i think) last year?!?!? You cannot judge him on last year with TEN alone.
I can't judge him on last year but I should judge him on one catch from last year?
He knows that in Indy we have one goal this year and it happens to be the same as his, win a superbowl. If he wants to play for us, for the right price, i for one will not be disappointed. I will just have to agree to disagree with you (but i am right) ;)

:FBcheesy: If you are right (which you're not because you disagree with me :FBsmiley:) I will be one of the first to say so. I've been wrong before, it's not impossible to believe I may be wrong again at some future date.

  4. You'd be happy to see that there is no more Painter:

5 RBs? Especially since one is no longer on the roster. A LB who is no longer on the roster backing up two positions? A DE no longer on the roster and a DT who probably won't make the final 53 as a starter.

Plus, I don't think Smith is eligible for the practice squad. He has accrued three seasons already (2008, 2009 and 2010.)

  5. In what other sport is the commissioner not prevalent though? You see and hear Bud Selig and David Stern all the time in the MLB and NBA respectively.

I'm not sure how saying Goodell is an active commissioner equates to making a "good point"

In our day and age anyone in a high profile position is basically stalked by the media as it is, so I don't really understand what Clark is trying to get at.

The point, I thought was quite obvious, Goodell is to involved in too many items that should be handled by the individual franchises. As Clark later states, "Goodell is the judge, juror and appeals." And even Selig and Stern are not as much a part of the game as Goodell is making himself to be.

Your last point makes very little sense and has nothing to do with the linked article.

  6. ok, ur right, he didnt score with TEN. I thought he did, but he did score 3 with NE in 4 games and 2 with MIN in 4 games. not too shabby. I know that we have wayne, garcon, and collie but we pass enough to use Moss also. Garcon is an ok WR but he will not be a hall of famer. for you to sit there and try to tell me that we dont get a LOT better on offense by upgrading garcon on the outside to Moss is just freakin rediculous.

I'm not sure what "rediculous" means but, no I do not think the Colts are a lot better with Moss. I don't even think they would be a little better with Moss. And no, Garcon is not a hall of fame WR and never will be but Moss last year no longer played like a HOF WR either. I'm not taking anything away from his (Moss) career accomplishments and if this was 5 years ago or even 2 years ago my attitude on signing Moss would be completely different.

"Championship teams are not built with players who only play well when things are going their way" I agree but we are already a contender, we are not trying to build a championship team from the bottom like TEN, that is why it didnt work there. I seriously can tell you than Caldwell, Irsay, the Polians, and all the colts fans could not care less whether you are disappointed with them or not. We just wants a superbowl and Randy Moss could seriously help our chanes of getting one THIS YEAR!!!!

    Not anymore he couldn't.
  7. Meh, I don't think we could afford having 5 or 6 RBs on the roster. Dominic Rhodes and Moore are good returners, maybe I'd give the edge to Moore, but Dom is a 10x better rusher than Moore which means more to the Colts. Our 2nd returner could be Gilreath if he makes the roster, or Jerraud Powers, or even Pierre Garcon or Bethea. There are many possibilities.

Don't forget Hagler. For the Colts last year he had a 41 yard/return average and a TD. :FBlaugh:

Powers did good on PR last year. Bethea will not return kicks or punts unless it's an absolute emergency. He never has returned kicks or punts as a pro and he probazbly never will.

4 Rbs on the roster sounds about right

    Addai, Brown, Carter, Moore.

    Last year it was

Addai, Hart, Brown, Moore until Moore got injured, then Brown, then Addai, then Hart, then Addai again, then Hart again, then...

I'm not discounting the possibility of one of the UDFA taking a spot, it's just not likely.

  8. Not sure if Rusty Smith and Kerry Collins throwing to an unmotivated Moss during a mid-season trade, on a losing team would be the best indicator of what Moss has to offer.

As bad as VY is, he can throw to an open receiver more than 6 times in 8 games.

And that is exactly what Moss has to offer. If he's not happy he offers nothing. Plus who would you want him to take looks away from? Garcon? No. I think Garcon has limited upside and I think he maxed out at 65-70 receptions, 750-850 yards and half dozen TDs. Moss is not going to do more than that with the Colts so why take that away from Garcon who's been working is Manning for going on 4 years now? Collie? No. A healthy Collie is one of the best receivers in the league. Wayne? Yeah right. Gonzo? Possibly. So people want the Colts to sign Moss to be the 4th receiver?

We are not the titans... he did not want to play for them and i dont blame him. all he wants is a ring and they had no chance at giving him one. i know he had a bad year last year but he did score a TD for 3 different teams (no one else has EVER done that). Try not to be a negative nancy and get excited about the possibilty of looking at Wayne, Moss, Collie, Garcon, Gonzo, and don't forget Clark at TE all catching balls thrown by the GOAT at QB. I know it is just a rumor but can u seriously tell me u dont want him on our team? that is nonsense :FBshocked:

One Moss did not score a TD with the Titans so he did not score with 3 different teams and therefore not the first person to do that.

But look at last year... Pats no longer wanted him... traded to Vikings, Vikings no longer wanted him, traded the Titans. Titans wanted him, tried to give him a chance and he just sat there and collected a paycheck. Championship teams are not built with players who only play well when things are going their way. And I can seriously tell you that I do not want the Colts to sign Moss and I will be disappointed in Caldwell, Irsay and the Polians if they do.

  10. Who's writing him off? I know I am not.

But you have to remember with this fan base in particular:

    1. If a player doesn't start his first year with the team he is no good.
    2. If a player starts but is not one of the top 5 in his position he is no good.
    3. If a player is good but gets injured for a large portion of the season then he is forgotten
    4. If a player has never played a down of football in the NFL he is better than the players on the roster that fall into categories 1, 2 and 3.
    5. If a player is great but injured then he will be the savior on the franchise... if his fragile body does not get injured again
    6. If a player played for another team he is automatically better than anyone on the Colts roster at that position, except for Manning

  11. How often did you hear (former commissioner) Paul Tagliabue's name throughout the season?" Clark said. "I think (Goodell has) decided to make himself a major part of this game.

From an article stating Goodell is not going to punish Harrison for comments he made in a magazine article.

Tags was a great commissioner and was integral into making the NFL the most popular sporting event in the country. And like Clark stated, you rarely heard him mentioned, especially during the season.

  12. I was just thinking about the Patriots recent acquisition of Albert Haynesworth, and how people said he gave up on plays. Now I know he's not exactly the paragon of a hard-working lineman, but I was wondering how much of one's total energy does a lineman (both offensive and defensive) expend on any particular play? Granted, they have roughly 20-30 seconds before each play, and rest when the team changes possession of the ball, but do they go 100% all the time?

That is a good question. Think of it this way, if you try to knock down a wall how much energy must you expend? How much energy does the wall have to expend? So it is harder on defensive players than offensive lineman (not saying that it's easy).

Some of it depends on the play. I was talking to a Colts lineman one time and he said that if the play is on the other side of the field and past where they are or if he's pass blocking and the pass has already left Manning's hands then he will tell the defender and most the time they will stop. So, I don't think they go 100% all the time but pretty close to it.

  13. In 05 and 06, that tactic didnt worked as well vs the Colts. Thats the 2 years where the Colts had the most production out of the DT position.

You really think the Colts had good production for the DT position in '06? Not until the end of the season.
Since 2000, only 2 DTs were drafted in the first 2 rounds by the Colts (Tripplett 02 and Moala 09). Besides that, Simon and Booger were acquired in 05-06 and both had injuries/weight issues and thats why they were dealt.

Thats the only things they did to really try and fix the situation besides what happened since 2 days or so. Tripplett never was a great DT but he had his best year and started playing good (or rather, looked good) the minute he was playing next to an overweight/out of shape Simon. Check that week 1 game vs the Ravens, Tripplett looked like a good DT in that game.

The opposing teams couldnt play Simon 1 on 1 that year so they had to double him pretty often and when they did, either Mathis or Freeney were 1 on 1. Thats a win-win situation for the Colts.

You dont have that with the DTs currently on the roster.

You're making it sound like BP tried to fix the siatuation with all kinds of moves and picks. It just never happened.

He did... signing simon, trading for Booger, taking a chance of Ed Johnson, then taking a 3rd chance on Ed Johnson. Signing Monte Reagor, drafting of Trip (and Trip was only ever good for the first two games of the season and then one more at some point during the season). Taking a chance on Pitcock. They have done a lot to try and fix it, it's just nothing (other than Reagor) solved the issue for more than one year.

Lewis himself was complaining about 6 years ago about being doubled/tripled on every single plays (obviously, he was exagerating) and what did the Ravens do? They drafted Ngata and that fixed the D. The Steelers have Hampton. The Buccs had Sapp. The Panthers in 03-04 has Jenkins. The Bears, in their best years, had a dominant Harris. All are DTs.

I wasn't arguing the importance of the DT position. Going by your train of thought the Ravens should have drafted a NT before Ngata, Bucs should have drafted Sapp's replacement a year after he retired, Panthers should not be struggling now they should have fixed their DT problems long ago. The point is problems cannot always be fixed as soon as they become problems. With the Colts they have tried to fix the DT position ever since Dungy became the Colts. None of the solutions have worked out. Just think if Simon and played for 4 years (he was 28 when the Colts signed him so that's not unreasonable) would we be talking about DT being a long standing weakness? What if Booger had played 3 (he was 29 or 30 when the Colts got him) how would that have improved the DT? What if Ed Johnson had not decided to go back to his girlfriend, mary jane, and improved upon his rookie season? What if Pitcock had not retired and played for years like he did in the last few games of his rookie season? So, rather than going through that same thing with the DE position they took a guy to help reduce those issues if something happened. The strategy makes perfect sense.

  14. Simon and Booger were never on the team at the same time and 06 was one of the worst years of D we ever had - we had a HISTORICALLY bad run defense (not just bad but I mean HISTORICALLY bad) that limped into the play-offs having been overrun by everyone (Ron Dayne looked like Jim Brown) ..they got lucky that they played 3 inept offenses in the play-offs and also get hot for 4 games.

Otherwise I agree - at the very least he has to be an upgrade over Eric Foster

I have to laugh everytime someone claims the Colts got lucky in the playoffs because they played three bad offenses.

    Like people don't remember

vs Chiefs - Many Colts fans and pundits picked the Chiefs as the wildcard team most likely to advance. They had their 1700+ yard rusher 230lb Larry Johnson. They were going to run all over the Colts. Johnson got 32 yards on 13 carries.

vs Ravens - Many Colts fans and pundits picked Baltimore to move onto the AFC Championship game. J. Lewis was going to run all over the Colts especially because (now they were saying) unlike the Chiefs the Ravens had a QB who could beat the Colts throwing if they stacked the line against the run. Lewis had 53 yards on 13 carries, McNair completed a high percentage of passes but couldn't pick up a first down and threw 2 INTs.

vs Pats - Colts were going to lose because the Pats had their number and the Pats played better in a dome than any dome team. Didn't happen.

vs Bears okay most people thought their offense could be bad because of Grossman. But many Colts fans and pundits were saying the Bears had the best chance to beat the Colts because they had an awesome running game with Jones/Benson, they had a defense that could stall Manning and if the good Rex shows up they could move the ball.

After the Colts won the SB then(and only then) did people start saying they got lucky with the teams they played in the playoffs.

BOT - That video of Harris is cool. The reason the Colts were able to sign him, cheaply is because there are no highlight videos of him in 2010. That is cause for concern. But it's a low risk/high possible reward signing so it's not bad at all.

  15. That part has often been what some people have awnsered me (basically the only thing) when I kept questionning the drafting of Hughes in the 1st round 1.5 year ago.

Where this stops making sense tho is: Is either Freeney or Mathis injury prone? The awnser is no. They could get injured this year but thats irrelevant. The question is, 'till now, has either players been having health issues.

Injury prone? No but it wasn't the first time they had been missed in the playoffs and each time it had an effect on the Colts. Polian even stated after that they had tried to draft the 3rd DE for a few years it just had not worked out until Hughes.
If the reasonning is "but we saw what happen when 1 is missing", then why dont BP draft a QB? After all, what happens if PM goes down? The offense lost a step when they lost their best offensive player (besides PM) last season (Clark).
Different scenario. If Manning went down the entire offensive philosophy would change in addition to QB being the highest price position. So you need someone that can learn the playbook, be cheap and handle the change in offense. And we don't know, if Manning missed a significant amount of time one year the Colts may very well spend a high draft pick on a QB. So this scenario is bogus because it has not happened
Why didnt BP drafted a TE in the first round in the last draft? Of course it wouldnt have made any sense. Now, apply that same logic to the DE.
Because they already had Tamme on the roster. And that is why they drafted Tamme and kept him on the roster as Clark's back-up. If the Colts had a starting quality, pass rushing DE on the roster they probably would not have drafted Hughes. So this scenario is bogus because it's not similar at all.
Why did it made any sense to draft a DE in the first round to backup 2 pro bowlers in their prime just because, Freeney got injured late in a season in which the Colts got to the SB?

    It makes no sense, period.

As I said above, because 2009 wasn't the first time it happened.
What makes some sense however is, considering how bad the DT position has been for the Colts for the past decade (baring 1.5 year: Simon/Booger), why doesnt it make sense to fix the issue once and for all?

I would guess it's because they didn't think any DT available would fix the issue once and for all.

The issue years after years have been the same on D: no push up the middle from the DTs giving the option for opposing QBs to simply step up in the pocket once Frathis get around the edges (Pats began donig this vs Colts years ago and its been copied by alot of teams since then) and pathetic DT play vs the run, which means LBs and safeties often serve as 1st line of defense (instead of 2nd and 3rd line of defense). This means more injuries to those undersized players and also, since the Colts organization dont believe in paying OLBs (I have np with that philosophy btw as long as its done properly), we get a revolving door there and the issue is the same yearly: OLBs constantly in the wrong gaps.
Umm, are you really saying that no QBs stepped up into the pocket against the Colts before Brady started doing it? And it's been discussed many times on the message boards... the Colts have done more things out of the ordinary to try and fix the DT position and it hasn't worked out. It's frustrating but it's not from lack of trying. They've signed a high profile free agent, spent high draft picks, signed guys of questionable character, made in season trades (completed one and not the other). Then it looks like they have the DT situation settled, Moala up and coming from the draft before. Muir had a very good 2009 campaign and Mookie for the rotation. Then Muir takes a step back, Moala improves, and Mookie doesn't get in any better shape and is only good for 4 or 5 plays but is forced to play more because Muir digress.
Get NFL caliber DTs in the middle and you'll see this:

-that Frathis will suddenly become even more effective

-that even if 1 of the Frathis duet gets injured, the D will still be somewhat effective because, there will still be push up the middle due to competent DTs

Perhaps. But teams would still take primarily three step drops to get rid of the ball before anyone on the line can get there (this is why I think they signed Anderson to get those long arms above his 6'6" height and disrupt some of those passes). Now, instead of being somewhat effective, the DEs can still be effective because they spent a first round pick on a DE.

After all, how many Ds in the NFL have 2 pro bowlers DEs in their prime? The awnser is, only 1. That goes to show you there's more to a D than DEs.
But a lot of teams believe in stacking up on their strengths. Baltimore has been able to maintain a great D in large part because they always stack up at LB so if one goes down or they lose one to FA another can step in with very little, if any drop-off. Steelers has done the same thing with their LBers. Colts are doing it with their DE. They were in a position where there was no need to draft an immediate starter in the first round. They went with the BPA that filled a need and would be in position to take over if; one of the players got injured or one was not given a new contract. Now if the Colts don't sign Mathis after this season, rather than relying on a rookie draft pick to be a starter they will have a 3 year veteran. Makes perfect sense.
Conversely, each good D in the league has a great DT (for 3-4) or a great DT and another above average DT (for 4-3) in their lineup.

This shows you can have a good/great D without having dominant DEs. I dont know of a good/great D with crappy DT play however.

I agree a DT is important and there have been a few I would have liked the Colts to have drafted. But I only have about 1/10th the information that an organization has when making their decision. I'm not going to sit here and pretend that if they had done things my way the weaknesses would have been solved.

  16. ummm i think we should defer to fans of his previous teams. by the way, EVERY SINGLE EAGLES AND LIONS FAN IN THE THREAD had something negative to say about him. that should tell you something.

Yes and no. Look how fans here have talked about CJ since he left. Or a better example Session. Before Session signed with the Jags most fans on here talked about how he was one of the must sign, after he left the feelings changed dratically and many of those same people were saying that he wasn't that good anyway.

For Sims, I defer to my cousin who; is a Lions fan, played and started at a Div II school, was asked to be a student coach when he was finished, now coaches HS football. After the Colts signed him, I sent him an e-mail to ask about Sims and he said he is a superfast LB, who knows how to deliver a hit when he tackles. Said his biggest weaknesses are can't really fight off blockers once he's engaged so he tends to try and run around them rather than through them. He said his first two years at Detroit he played very disciplined and if he knew he wasn't going to make the tackle he'd sacrifice himself to take out blockers so someone else could make the play. Said when they changed coaches after the winless season the coaches had the LBers play a completely different style than what they had been used to. He said in that system with his speed and hitting ability he would have done better if they moved him to SS. He said his biggest strength is flowing to the ball and making the play once he's there. He said he doesn't make too many read and react mistakes but can get a little too aggressive in pass coverage thinking he can make the INT rather than just focusing on hitting the receiver as the ball gets there.

Said he didn't really see any Philly games but based on what he saw while he was at Detroit he felt Sims should be a great pick-up for the Colts and will be shocked if he's not the day 1 starter.

Me, I don't know, all I can go by is his stats, which have not been impressive for a while but I do trust my cousin's analysis of him.

  17. Interesting comments from Sims today

“Everything happens for a reason,” he said. “That’s what Coach Caldwell and I talked about. I actually took a visit here coming out of the draft. Unfortunately, I wasn’t drafted here, I was drafted to the Detroit Lions and I have learned a lot since then and it turned out I am back in the place I need to be. I am going to make the best out of it. I am really excited.”

    Article

I know players talk and sometimes it is just talk but I thought the phrasing was interesting. Unfortunately is an odd word to use especially considering the difference in pay between where he was drafted and what it would have been had the Colts drafted him. Then saying "in the place I need to be." that word "need" makes me wonder what he and Caldwell talked about.

  18. Been all over ESPN/NFL Network this afternoon. Kyle Orton is the starter and Tebow has looked sixteen shades of horrible in practice (even without pads). Kyle is the Week 1 Starter and then some (Lombardi, Schefter).

Sucks because the fans will boycott the team but any shot at going 8-8 for the Bronco's is on Orton. Let Tebow play, if he tanks, get Luck and shop Tebow/Orton next year!

Thanks. I don't have time to search a bunch of places. It's why I like to come here because most people post links and I can just follow the link.

  19. Hughes was drafted because the Colts need(ed) an effective 3rd rusher because they had just learned a couple of months before what happens when you lose one of the Frathis brothers.

  20. He seems to not be in the Broncos plans for the future. not gaining support from the front office. We should look at this guy and let him back up 18 and groom him into a starter. your thoughts

Where are you reading he is not getting support from the front office?

  21. The best way for anyone (especially a rookie) to learn... go up against the best.

Tarik Glenn was always a good tackle for the Colts but he stuggled mightily against speed rushers, then in 2002, after facing Freeney for two offseasons, he started to improve and kept improving until he retired.

  22. I see what you are saying now. I think they list only about the top 44 or so DTs. So, when you choose regular season, Moala is not in the top 44. When you include playoffs, Moala is in the top 44 DTs. Their list is not comprehensive and does not list every single DT past the first page like the NFL one. Not sure if it is a shortcoming of paging programming on the web page or if that was by design, only to list the top 44.

    Thanks. That makes sense.

  23. I went to Stats -> Defensive Players -> Defensive Tackles. That shows 2010 stats.

I see how you can be puzzled since the Defenders by Team stats do not show anything for anyone besides the Packers, it is not updated. You are right about that.

There is a pull down menu to select the Colts.

But it was when I selected regular season only for all Defensive tackles, there is no Moala.

At, Stats -> Defensive Players -> Defensive Tackles. The pull down menues are [year][position][games, choices are include playoffs, regular season, playoffs only]. If you select regular season there is no Moala. If you select Playoffs only Moala played in two games.

Perhaps (playoffs only) is accumlative for a career. Because for Raji it shows 5 games and Pouha it shows 4.

But that still would not explain why Moala (or Mookie) is not on there when sorted by regular season.
