  1. One, according to the forum rules I don't think you are supposed to question the moderators tactics in the open forum.

Two, I think the moderators are very fair, maybe even a bit lenient on threads. There have been a few threads where, if I were still a moderator or forum advisor, I would have closed but they let them stay open.

  2. NY Life Protection Index

Many people ignore this because it goes against the perceptions and most people cannot take that. Not only does that show the Colts as the best pass protecting line last year, they were the best line by quite a margin.

    Explanation

While the New York Life Protection Index is calculated using a proprietary formula, the fundamentals are comprised of the length of a team’s pass attempts combined with penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns.

Your comment about Diem and run blocking off. There was quite a drop off in run blocking when Diem was out for the playoff game. Diem is not as good at the 2nd level as he has been in the past but at the POA he still mauls the defenders.

  3. do you watch any games or just watch the polian show? this team needs defensive help and no

game changers are coming from the I.R. it is ok to drink the kool-aid just don't drowned in it.

i am a season ticket holder and not trying to be negitive, just real.and yes they will have 1 game

    in january.

I watch the games and there are a few game changers coming off IR. Defensively we have Bullitt and Powers. And if you don't think Bullitt is a game changer from Francisco then you obviously do not watch the games when you attend. Same with Powers... a crucial tipped pass on 3rd down, covering the receiver so he gets no yards after the catch, those can all change the game significantly. Plus the offensive players coming off IR can help the D a lot. Collie and Clark are both great weapons to have on 3rd down. Before his injury last year Collie had 16 first downs, 12 of them were on 3rd down. Clark has long been a goto on 3rd down for Manning. Do you think if the Colts convert a few more third downs that will help the defense?

Also, why is it that people being negative perceive themselves as being "real" and the people being positive are perceived as being "homers" or (the most stupid phrase in sports) "drinking the kool-aid? When experience has shown with the Colts the people who are positive are more "real" than the people who are negative.

  4. Williams is a sure upgrade over Brown.

I'm not a huge Donald Brown fan, but I'm not sure how you can make this statement. Is his 3.8 ypc over his career better than Brown's 3.8 ypc? Or is his 3.5 ypc better than Brown's 3.9 yards per carry? Williams had a good rookie season but the 5 years since then he's been pretty average. And the Bucs have a better run blocking line than the Colts.
All I'm saying is for vet min you cant go wrong. If he works out you can save a lot of cap room by cutting the RB's that we have now.

Yes you can go wrong. There are only so many snaps in a practice and in a preseason game. You take those snaps away from one player to give them to another player has an effect. Especially when that one player has proven to bring nothing special to the table.

  5. lol, seriously? You guys are banking on two 2nd year players to hopefully make the "2nd year leap"?

Umm this is incorrect. Two LBers that played well as rookies improving in their 2nd year is pretty common in the NFL. But even if they play exactly the same as last year the defense can be improved.

It'll be so much fun watching the Colts get ran over like every other year, while we'll taste a bit of our own medicine with PA cause we don't have the DB's to cover.
Obviously you are not a Colts fan, if you think it's fun to watch the Colts get ran over.

Huge problems isn't an overstatement, and if you're think that way you're naive.

    It is an overstatement.
How long are you guys going to homers and ride Manning? He is getting older, Reggie is older, even the defensive players we ride are getting old. Mathis and Freeney are getting up there, and since the Colts management obviously have no intention of filling in voids and just making more.
Please name one player in the NFL who is not getting older.
Everyone in our division minus maybe the Titans have a better front 7 than us. And honestly, the Texans have a better quality team than we do now, its kind of sad really.

You call other naive and then you type a sentence that is the definition of being naive. Now that is funny.
  6. This seems to be a fantastic pick up, but no one is talking about it.

I'm guessing it's because the average football/Colts fan doesn't know more than a handful of DT names...

This guy could be a 1st down, run-stuffing DE or DT, and a situational guy to bait something out of an offense. He's large, strong, has huge reach, and has a penchant for sniffing out the run.

I'm not sure how no one is talking about it, there were 2 or three threads about it yesterday. It's not all that exciting because he's considered a bust in Atlanta. He has excellent size but he's not that strong and I'm not sure where a penchant for sniffing out the run came from. He's was drafted to be a pass rushing specialist who has 4.5 sacks in 4 years.

I think he will be a pass rushing DT and in certain situations be that "power" end that Coyer likes.

  7. To continue in the spirit of the CB thread posted by Andy246, I figured we could start one about another area of concern: DT's. Unfortunately, the Brandon Mebane ship has sailed, and Remi Ayodele was another prospect worth considering, but there are still some quality players out there that could be had for relatively cheap. It certainly wouldn't hurt to give them a shot.

*NOTE: If I make any errors - someone I list here has already been signed, etc. - please forgive me. It is late, and I haven't checked all of the updates.

    In no particular order:

    1. Tommie Harris (Bears)

    2. Derek Landri (Panthers)

    3. John McCargo (Bills)

    4. Thomas Johnson (Falcons)

    5. Aubrayo Franklin (49ers)

Discuss, research, open topics of likes/dislikes, critique me for putting someone on there who may be locked up already, add more players of your own liking. Enjoy!!!!

No thanks on Tommie Harris. Injuries and lack of desire is not a good combination.

Landri would be a fine pick up, IMO. I wanted the Colts to draft him when he came out in 2007. He had a solid season for the Panthers last year and would be worth a look in camp. He's one of those guys, IMO, that does everything pretty well, but nothing great.

McCargo - Wasn't he the one the Colts tried to do a mid season trade in 2008 but he couldn't pass the physical? So, it's possible because the Colts wanted him at one time. But I don't see a lot of value for a guy who has 12 tackles over the last three seasons.

Franklin is listed as the #6 on Kirwin's best of what's left. But I don't see it. With the signing of Jamaal Anderson and the drafting of Drake Nevis, it looks like Coyer is going to try and go back to the philosophy of; if the DTs can get penetration then the LBers and safeties can make the tackle for minimal gain. Although, I personally, would not mind a rock that can hold his position against a double team.

Thomas Johnson, no thanks. What could he bring to the table? From looking at his career... nothing.

  8. I agree, but somebody has to blink first and get this kid into camp. They simply can not afford to play hardball with this guy and have him miss all of training camp.

I agree Castanzo needs to get into camp but I don't think it's playing hardball, I just think they are trying to determine what is going to be acceptable for this range of draftee.

Only one person in this "grouping" has signed. I think they are just waiting to see if that 5th year is going to be included(at this part of the draft) or not. because what the teams do this year is going to set the precedent for future years.

  9. I fully expect AC to the best starting LT opening day.

In his limited action last year Link showed that a) the game is not too big for him (good thing), b) he is not ready to play consistent minutes (bad thing). And, IMO, there is no way possible for a smart, 4 year starter from a major college program can be worse than Link.

  10. One gives the Colts fans a chance to enjoy the success of a team.

The other gives the US citizens punishments for being successful at life.

Slightly different. And the "plan" isn't a plan to benefit anyone except the folks in Washington.

    :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

    This is great, thanks Doogansquest.

  11. exactly... :applause: i have high hopes for thomas though

Living out on the left coast I got a good dose of USC football (all the stations I get are LA stations) and I have high hopes for Thomas as well. He's a lot like knee injury Jackson except for a bit quicker in the zone and longer arms.

The down for Thomas is it took him a while to catch on at USC. Unless there is an injury to Powers or Tryon I think Thomas will be the primary nickel back and I expect this year to be kind of like Thomas' junior year at USC. The first couple of games you will watch him and ask, "what did anyone see in this kid to put him over another player?" Then he'll go 4 or 5 games and you won't hear his name or think about his play much and then he'll start making some plays and INT here and crucial pass defensed there and by the end of the year people will be talking about a Polian steal in the 3rd.

That is all assuming Thomas stays injury free as well which, going by his history, is NOT guaranteed.

  12. This is from Bill Poian when ask what we needed entering the 2008 draft. he went down positon and player and said this • Offensive guard. “Certainly. (Third-year veteran) Charlie (Johnson) is going to play in there. Can you use a backup? Sure.” So he was always going to play guard. He is undersized to play OT. He does ok there but guard is where he should be playing and I am sure the colts always assumed that.

    here is the article. http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=49d0ca7f-905f-4a67-aea0-a7a05e587e5e

Kind of what Rexall said. He moved there in his third year with the team. Before that he played tackle and after that year he played tackle. He was not drafted to play guard.

An it's tough to say about under sized because the Colts don't worry too much about that for any position. Glenn was huge, Meadows was on the smaller side. Diem is good size but Ugoh and now AC are a bit smaller. For guards Scott and Lilja were on the small side but DeMulling, Pollack and DeVan are in that 310 range, McClendon and Thomas are in the 330lb range. CJ is listed at 305lb but you can tell he is much heavier than that, closer to 320-325. So there is no real weight limit for the Colts to say someone is undersized.

  13. good i like that we resign aj, but why toudouze he never plays not to mention all the o-linemen that we have already

Toudouze has played a few games but I'd be willing to bet it's because teams can have 90 guys in camp instead of 80 so they are just filling up the roster. And with the 1st tackle spots locked down (AC, CJ(assuming he will be re-signed per reports), Diem, Ijilana)why bring in an unknown? bring in someone and see if they have worked enough in the off season to make the roster.

  14. safety is a concern because we have no quality depth behind bethea and bullitt. bullitt had a serious shoulder injury and a lot will depend on his health. if he stays healthy we will probably be fine. but if he gets injured again I don't wanna see a guy like francisco!

The Colts didn't want to see a guy like Francisco either but when the starting SS goes down on the first drive of the season, the primary back-up goes down early in the fourth game of the season and the 3rd string guy gets IR'd in training camp there are not a lot of options.

But there is no way to really plan for that and when you getting to the 5th and 6th option you are going to notice a drop off in ability and production. With a limit of only 53 players you can't keep 3 deep in a lot of positions.

  15. Charlie Johnson played TE in high school, and then when he went to Oklahoma State, he was switched to an OFFENSIVE TACKLE. People say its his natural position because he's small for a tackle, and perfect size for a guard. It would have been better for him to play guard in college, but because he was a blocking tight end, and tight ends play on the end, they made him a tackle. So you're wrong, he was draft to play OT, not guard. He played guard during his first years, because Tarik Gleen was the starting LT and Diem was the RT, and we only had Scott as a guard; we needed another guard, so they moved him there. He's like Ijalana, very versatile which means he could play tackle and guard, something which is hard to find in a tackle.

Actually he played TE at Oklahoma State and was switched to tackle his senior year. He backed up Diem his rookie season and played in the SB for a few series. he received one of the best compliments when, after he had been in for a couple of series, Manning looked at him and said, "How long have you been in here?" So his play as a rookie in the SB was good enough, Manning didn't even realize a change had been made.

The only time he played guard was in 2008 when Lilja went down with an injury. He started at LG all but 5 games when he moved to LT because Ugoh got injured.

  16. Not sure how safety is a concern? The Colts have the same starting duo that helped get them to the SB in 09. As far as CB, Tryon proved to be a very good CB and having a training camp with the Colts, I expect big things from him this year. The only question is the health of Powers.

I'm not sure what you consider ROLB and LOLB because the Colts have a WILL and SAM (weak side and strong side). The weakside is a bit of a question with Conner and how he can handle an entire season. But the SAM position with Angerer/Wheeler is about as solid as you can get with a salary cap. DT with the re-signing of AJ, Moala who proved to be the best, most consistent DT last year and the addition of Drake is an excellent rotation (yes Drake is going to be that good, I believe) and then some good role players with Foster and Mathews, I'm not sure why that is such a huge question.

There are some questions with depth at some of those positions but that is why there is training camp to answer those questions.

  17. Good, we could use him for one more year, let Ijalana develop and maybe move him to RT, or we could draft one in the 2nd round next year. Thank you Ryan, and shame on you for all you haters.

That is probably exactly what will happen. They did a similar thing with Meadows, although if I remember correctly they restructured his deal, Diem played guard one season then the next season they released Meadows and moved Diem to RT.

  18. The news will please quarterback Peyton Manning. He believed retaining Diem was important to the status of the offensive line.

Peyton, when he said he doesn't need to be the highest paid player, also mentioned Charlie Johnson by name.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say, that Manning probably knows more about oline play than me and if he thinks it's a good thing then I will agree with him.

  19. If the price is right (and I have no idea what that would be, 5 years 20 mill, 3 year 15 mil, I have no idea what the Colts would consider the right price) I don't know how why the Colts wouldn't make this move. I like Bullitt and I think a lot of people blame him for things that don't happen in reality, but I don't think he is anything more than a good, solid safety. Whitner, teamed up with Bethea, would make a great duo. And for those that think Whitner is just a run stopper because of his tackles, that is wrong. He is very good in coverage, especially covering a zone. He doesn't have elite top end speed but he is as quick and agile and just about any other safety in the league not named Polamalu.

  20. The emergence of Tryon, Lacey proving he's a capable nickle/dime back and two young guys who have long arms and good quickness made this possible.

Thanks Hayden for you time, I'm sorry injuries made things difficult for you but I will always remember your pick 6 in the SB.

  21. Colts need Patrick Willis, Ray Lewis, Derrick Brooks, Zach Thomas, Brian Urlacher, DeMarcus Ware, Sam Huff, Derrick Thomas, Kevin Greene, Jack Lambert, Mike Singletary, Dick Butkus and Lawrence Taylor, Larry the cable guy and Superman all playing in their prime. I'm not sure if they have enough caproom though, it also might be hard to acquire some of them. I'm sure we would see a significant improvement the D. They could also throw Ryan Leaf in as well at LB just for the to hedge against and injury then the universe would implode and cease to exist.

Even with all that, there'd still be people on this forum complaining.

  22. The Colts went from being the laughing stock of the NFL to one of the premiere teams in the NFL after Jim Irsay took over. If that is the definition of a clueless owner then I'm glad my favorite team has a clueless owner.
