Im expecting one of the 5th rounders, maybe 142, will be a running back

So do you go wild here in round 3 and go receiver again?

Great pick here. Anyone notice Ballards change in philosophy so far. He took some one with a medical issue. Then takes a guy with some character concerns. He is swinging for the fences. Venturi was adamant colts needed a burner opposite Pittman. They got it.
I'm not aware of any character concerns about Mitchell, but yes it is long past time to move past a somewhat puritanical streak on player assessment. It's building a football team, not a church choir.

PFF loving this pick
"Mitchell dropped just one pass over the past two years on 103 targets."

Based on value chart it's about right

They swapped 2nd's and Colts picked up 142 and 155

If you could get a physical that confirms no issues, do it. But he's missed 17 games over the last 2 years, at that salary number you have to be absolutely right. 4x pro bowler could really really be great for the team!

Classic. Just classic.
Kiper still adamantly claims that he was right, as Trent Dilfer was a super bowl winning qb...with his 2nd team..and we all know that it was his 12-25 153 yards that put the Ravens over the top in that SB that Baltimore won 34-7!
No one can argue that Alberts didn't end up a bust(and was a complete jerk) but any hindsight of that draft says the Colts mistake was not taking Bryant Young, Aaron Glenn, or Sam Adams in that 4 slot.
Bill Tobin brought an immediate turnaround for this franchise. His biggest mistake wasn't passing on Dilfer, but firing Ted Marchibroda.

Like any company, it's hard to evaluate the contributions of one person, or even one department, due to the internal power structures. We don't really know how the scouting department performs in the context of the Colt's winning and losing record. I suspect, however, that there are certain people in the organization like Wally from Dilbert - people that at best don't do anything and at worst hinder the performance of competent people. All you can say is that certain people, like Grigson and Reich IMO, Luck's untimely retirement, and Jim Irsay's understandable histrionics, damaged the Colts in ways that can't be ignored. A large number of people, perhaps like our scouting department, didn't inform the others in the front office (at least loud enough) to see the effects it was having on the Colts place in the greater football community. It's not just losing a locker room, it is losing faith in the whole organization.
I've seen this kind of problem ruin companies.
The good news is that even if the team has a Wally, they can still produce the Gruntmaster 6000

AR following his sophmore year? Probably 3rd or 4th

Well...this all just became much more problematic!

Depends also if all of this JJ McCarthy talk is real or a draft smokescreen. If McCarthy is on the board and someone wants to go up to 9, Chicago is going to ask for more than just a 3rd rounder.

And for some reason Ballard will get a pass while the coach and AR will be the ones who feel the heat and are expected to win games against teams with more talent. I'm convinced now that Ballard knows how to identify the teams' short comings but has no idea how to acquire players to fix those short comings. He's too worried about the Lockeroom and what other players may think instead of understanding that our players will welcome players in that can help them win. This was a critical offseason for the entire franchise and Ballard sat idle and watched the rest of the division get better. Again, we will go into the season expecting our help to come from the draft and he just doesn't draft well enough for that to happen. After 7 years people, there is a pattern here that clearly doesn't work in today's NFL and if he didn't get aggressive this offseason, he never will. I'm done with the "my fault " crap after every season because he knows he won't be held accountable. I will always support the Colts but Ballard has to go.
I give no slack for Ballard but in this case I dont think going heavy in this free agency market would have been right. For one, with the cap spike, teams had a lot of money to throw around and, for example purposes only, getting into a bidding war for someone like Curtis Samuel was not the right move.

Not sure why YardBarker needs to be marginalized.
In general I agree. Fans tend to associate the merits of an analyst(regardless of whether they work for a large media outlet or run their own site) by how their team is rated.
But I would disagree with one point of YardBarker's assessment. He's determined that being idle is equal to signing your own players and that's not correct at all. Idle would be if the Colts had signed no one, not even their own players. And if he is determining that being idle is not adding new players, it would mean that he ignores the benefits of continuity.
None of us disagree that the team needs to improve in lots of areas, but I think that what @smittywerb said fits Ballard's pattern: he is going to go after cheaper vets later, especially once all the mad money from the cap spike runs out.

Higgins is a great receiver. And I don’t see Mike Brown trading him. Once Brown decides something, he rarely changes his mind.
Agree. Know a lot of Bengals fans and they feel like, at the minimum, he'll be there for the tag. Cincy's offense is based on their 3 receiver attack and to drop Higgins and bring in an unknown seems unlikely.

Is this the end of Sam?
No, not while he's still on his rookie contract(1 year left, just around $1M).

5 QBs get taken in the top 20 overall picks.

Having pick 15 gets the same caliber player as pick 25

I wouldnt touch THAT high cap either, and it would have to be addressed as part of a trade which other teams seem to do.
We need a DE...... First choice are D Hunter or Huff
But if that doesnt happen...... I would try to work a reasonable deal for Bosa
I think if I felt the Colts were missing 1 piece(a great rush defensive end) from getting to the super bowl, I would do it. But we're not there yet. And as Zoltan pointed out, that amount of games missed with his salary makes it impossible to say yes.

Bowers if there.
I am not convinced he would be(or even past 10). Agreeing with KB's point, getting a possible elite TE for a developing QB would be a huge win.

I guess trading back might not be a good strategy this year. Trying to move up into the first four rounds or acquiring more picks in the first four rounds might make more sense.
Unless it also nets picks next year, and someone would have to be hot for who falls to 15(JJ McCarthy?).
