Have you seen the turnout to the drafts the last few years? Huge economic boosts to the host cities. Massive events.

the nfl combine will die before it even remotely resembles something like that.

My error, I meant to say there are reasons why they would want the Combine, not the Draft.

I went to the draft in Cleveland in 2021 and even in post pandemic and bad weather, downtown Cleveland was packed

to turn it into a spectacle like the draft…

    always about money

Maybe its because I'm partial to the draft...but the combine isn't the draft and IMO never will be. Right now it doesnt match the draft when it was just held in the basement of MSG.

I'm assuming there are plenty of other monetary reasons why a city would want the combine(mainly team reps, soon to be nfl players and their agents all with money in their pockets ready to spend).

I remember a player, maybe Aaron Rogers, said that a LB for the cowboys was the best LB in the league AND leonard really didn't like that statement and commented on it. I think the player kinda backtracked to please him.and say something like he's never played against Leonard and the cowboy LB.was the best he's played against.

    Leighton Vander Esch?

This was a very good article written by their blog writer:

    https://www.windycitygridiron.com/2024/1/10/24033181/hot-take-wednesday-chicago-bears-matt-eberflus-ryan-poles-kevin-warren-miss-golden-opportunity

    Some key words:

George McCaskey, Kevin Warren and Ryan Poles had an opportunity to do something bold and tell Matt Eberflus that he did a good job but that it wasn’t good enough.

They had an opportunity to draft an excellent QB prospect, and line him up with an offensive-minded head coach and let the two of them grow together.

Instead, they will most likely bring in a rookie QB in Matt Eberflus’ 3rd season that could be considered a win now season, or he could lose his job. That’s how it was for Matt Nagy with rookie Justin Fields. That’s how it was for John Fox with rookie Mitch Trubisky.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

    Then he says:

Is it continuity if you keep Justin Fields and force him to learn his third offense in 4 years?

THIS, is why I loved the fact we hired Steichen. No more Russian Roulette on the offensive side for the most key position on an NFL roster. That is why C J Stroud will eventually have to deal with issues when Bobby Slowik is hired elsewhere and AR will benefit if Steichen sticks around and continues to do a good job as well.

When there was conversation here last year about possibly trading for Fields instead of drafting a qb, I said Chicago is a qb graveyard and you can't hold that against Fields...and wow does this post really illustrate the complete and total disaster of their handling of the qb situation.

Hypothetically if the Colts were offered 5 1st round picks plus Danielle Hunter I might have taken that. That’s a huge haul for one player, and who’s to say one of those 1st round picks wouldn’t land you another even better franchise QB. I love Richardson but he’s gotta stay healthy before I’ll say he’s worth more than 5 1st round picks.

Honestly if it was the max they could offer(3 1sts) prior to the draft and Hunter that's a very hard offer to say no to. That is a stunning amount of draft capital to refuse.

Do they win the SB if NE doesn't upset SD. Thus, we go to their house for the AFC title game?

Chargers gave Manning fits for some reason. Sanders being back was a huge boost.

    Thoughts?

Well this was certainly brought up a lot by Chargers fans back then...I think to feel better about losing at home to NE.

We will never know the answer of could Indy have beaten SD that year, but the truth is at that time NE completely had the Colts number. To me at the time it was no more of a relief to play at home vs NE than to travel to San Diego.

To be fair, there was an equal amount of Colts fans becoming such as well

But we were only arguing it with Pats fans, Pats fans were arguing it with everyone everywhere....I had a Pats fan on an MMORPG telling me the technical flaws of the Wells report!

Won't help them. No matter what they do AND how much talent they have the chargers organization is highly doubtful of being relevant, except for maybe a wild card season once in a while. I said previously Herbert should push his way out if championships matter to him. Bosa so frustrated at the end last year along with their fans who I feel sorry for.

The time was last year to fire their coach with Payton on the market and a young QB phenom to lure him.... But that's not the chargers way. haha

It's hard to imagine how they could take so many steps right, while simultaneously so many wrong.

I concur, they should have cleaned house after that playoff loss, The probably should have never moved back to LA either but that's a whole different conversation.

I voted never wavered. I think he is good, not great. Around the 15th best GM in the league (top half). If AR becomes a franchise QB, it will waiver to him being better. I will say this, signing Minshew was a great move. With Sam, this team would be 4-8 at best. At least this season we are winning games again.

Yeah that answer on the poll doesn't actually endorse. I'm about the same on him.

Alot of that has to do with Minschew as well.

He doesn't get alot of respect from Colts fans.

I agree. Probably the best play we've had from that position in 3 years. Don't get me wrong, he's streaky as all get out  but he's mobile, he keeps his eyes down field and he will go big when it's there. I would love to keep him another year if that's possible.

Maybe I'm missing your point. Stroud isn't running a lot right now. His high is 20 yards, and he has 86 yards total, in 9 games. Richardson had 136 yards, and he only played two full games. Stroud also barely lost any games in college, running or not.

The question everyone seemed to have was whether he could move well enough to handle pressure in in the NFL. I think it was on his college tape, and he's doing well with it as a pro. I really think people over thought it a little with Stroud, especially comparing him to some of the more athletically impressive prospects.

No my concern was his lack of running in college and did that apply to a general lack of mobility in the pro game. Aside from the Georgia game he rarely scrambled up field when plays broke down or ran on read option plays(which OSU runs a TON of).

I think his overall mobility in his NFL game is extremely impressive especially his throws while on the move. In the game vs the Bengals it was like looking at a completely different qb from the year before.

That was probably a career decision and not due to a lack of ability. He was a top pick anyway so its not like he needed to show more in college.  I guess he could have been the first pick but that would mean landing with a worse team too

That would've been wildly concerning if that's the case. His running could've been the difference in every OSU loss with the exception of Georgia in games he started.

I think it's more likely the fault is with Ryan Day in this scenario.

I personally have never been a fan of things like PFF, Passer rating, or QBR. All of those are simply flawed. If anyone has watched football for at least 30 years, they know who is better than who if they have a great football mind. Who has the leadership, who makes his team better, who comes through in the clutch, who wins, EYE TEST. None of those things are measured on any made-up formula statistical measure. I have been watching since the 1977 season, so that gives me 47 seasons of knowledge lmao .

In general I agree they all have serious flaws. Tenured fans on this board may remember pff scoring was practically dismissed during Quentin Nelson's rookie year because he was receiving so many mediocre grades!

I think they have they all have their uses(including eye test) but no single method should be relied on completely. But to echo a previous post, I appreciate the grades being posted, makes re-watches interesting.

I had plenty of reservations about Stroud(and as a Buckeye I saw every snap he took). My big concerns were 1) were his numbers inflated due to having the best receiving corps in school history? 2) with the exception of the Georgia game, he NEVER ran. It was almost a point of refusing to run, and the mobility he has shown in the NFL game is stunning and a big positive for Houston.

With minshew being our starter right now it got me thinking. Where would he rank amongst the backups we have had since the manning days.  Out of these and if I forget any please feel free to add them.

We got minshew, brissett, Jim sorgi, Sam ehlinger, Curtis painter (yuck) that’s all I can think of off the top of my head. Who would you say are the top 3 if you had to have one fill in for a season and not to tank but to win games lol.

Jim Sorgi of course! Best clipboard holder ever!

When I was growing up, here in Indiana basketball was a religion.  Bobby Knight was the High Priest, and the Motion Offense was the Holy Sacrament.  That's the way it was.  *sigh*

I lived in Richmond for one year(coming from Ohio) and it was all new to me. One kid who was a Purdue fan and another kid yelled at him "The name of the movie is Hoosiers, not Boilermakers!!!"

    RIP Coach

I really hope you are right. I do want the kid to succeed.  I have lived through the crap 80s and 90s teams. The bad front office decisions. Carrying on way to long to prove they were right. This looks alot like those days

You're not a troll for suggesting it. Let's say we get to April and the word is that the shoulder isnt progressing as expected(which considering how info came out on Luck injuries is going to come from outside the organization). Would and should it be considered? I say yes, and I want the young man to succeed as well. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
