    Here is the question though.

Does Cam throw to his TE or RB because that's just his game or does he throw to them because that's were the most talented skill players on his team are.

I don't follow Carolina enough to really answer that but they have spent some resources on WR's. I can think of off the top of my head Benjamin and Moore were 1st round picks DF a 2nd Samuel 2nd. Then in FA I remember them paying a lot for guys like Torrey Smith and Ted Ginn.

I think that would illustrate that someone would like to get WR's more involved. The only WR to lead the Panthers in receiving with Cam under C was Steve Smith his first 2 years in the league.

Either I think it's safe to say that DF will be working with a better QB who gets the ball to his WR's. The scheme is going to fit his skill set better and there will be less pressure on him. That should be a good deal hopefully for both parties.

What's that guy(the draft pick) going to be doing this year?  Probably buried on the depth chart unless that guy is able to play multiple spots up and down the line.

You could say that about every position I don't see a rookie coming in and starting anywhere maybe next to Hooker maybe. We would find a place in the DL rotation for an early pick especially if they can get to the QB.  The right RB could work his way in to the rotation. It'll be tough to see a lot of the field as a rookie.

I too heard that quote, but I view it differently I guess. If we have depth at the position already with players Ballard handpicked and has been very high on (autry, lewis, ward, etc) then why would he spend a top pick on the position?

I think calling Ward hand picked might be a stretch. He was drafted by Oakland and we signed him after Dallas cut him. I think most were encouraged by what he showed in limited time from him last season Ballard included. Autry will be 29 when the season starts and missed time last season due to injury as did the younger Lewis.

That doesn't sound like a position that's set. The chance of injuries in football make it very difficult to look at any position as set. If you can get

better you better cash in on that  opportunity.

The DL are not positions it's easy to find top talent so when it's there you pounce. We are no where close to being set on the DL and we don't have any glaring holes to fill so it's very unlikely we pass on a DT or DE. In fact other then OT I doubt there is a position more likely we spend a top pick on if the player is there.

Being a pure passer has never been Cam Newton's strongsuit, so it'll be interesting to see how well DF performs with a far better passing Quarterback. This offensive scheme also seems to favor DF's skillset more, and Reich wanted him for a reason, and last I checked he was indeed an offensive guru...so I'll concede to him, until I have reason not to.

Cam isn't a pure passer and when he does throw the ball it's much more likely to go to his RB or TE then to a WR.  No QB in the league throws the ball less to WR's.  I think it's a good move for him and us. We get a guy who can be a WR1 if need be but won't have those weekly expectations and DF gets a much better QB in a more friendly scheme.

I agree Ballard and Reich know what they are doing. How does DF do blocking? He has the size to help in the run game too. I think this will end up being a pretty good signing. We add another RB to help Mack and with the young receivers we have returning this offense should really get cooking in year 2.

If I were gonna bet, I'd say Ballard is more likely to trade back and acquire more picks than to lose picks and move a few spots. I'm all for him going up for the right guy, but don't think Burns is it. He's a situational rusher in the NFL, and that's essentially what we've already got, and just signed Houston for. If a guy like Oliver, White, Bush, or Gary start falling, then I think it's very possible. Only for an elite talent, tho.

I agree with this it's far more likely we go for more darts for the dart board then give up darts

I'd be stoked with this. Used the most updated (today) "Draft Countdown" for big board, and "NFL Mock" for team needs.

26: R1P26  DL DEXTER LAWRENCE CLEMSON

Run stuffer but more than adequate against the pass if needed given the guys around him. If Ballard is serious about stopping the run, this guy can definitely contribute right away on early downs.

    34: R2P2  S TAYLOR RAPP  WASHINGTON

Was torn on this one, but think it was the right pick given available. Average in coverage but great hitter and fits.

59: R2P27  WR DEEBO SAMUEL  SOUTH CAROLINA

Tough speedy fearless gamer. If he polishes, could play any WR position.

89: R3P25  RB DAVID MONTGOMERY  IOWA ST.

Good vision and power. Thought about going Snell here, but DM is more well rounded. Not a speedster, but great production.

129: R4P27  CB JORDAN BROWN  SOUTH DAKOTA ST.

Small school stud who is raw but good ceiling. x-WR late bloomer at but was all conference, but also 3rd team AA overall.

135: R4P33  WR MILES BOYKIN  NOTRE DAME

Great combine, so might go earlier. Big body, good control, and could compete at X.

    164: R5P26  G ALEX BARS  NOTRE DAME

Hurt last year, but very promising. Was the best on ND's OL before injury.

199: R6P26   OT RYAN POPE  SAN DIEGO ST.

Another small school stud with high ceiling. Suspended, and jumped to the NFL early. Flag?

240: R7P26  TE ALIZÉ MACK  NOTRE DAME

IMO, not utilized well at ND, but has crazy ball skills. Definitely worth a shot in the 7th.

I like a lot of the players you selected.  Montgomery is one of my favorite players in this draft and Brown one of my favorite small school kids. I love the Irish flavor. Barr and Boykins could be steals where they are picked. I think whete Mack goes is going to surprise you. I wish you could have found a way to get Tillery.

The problem I have is I don't see us taking 2 WR's. The draft is supposed to be one of historic proportions at DL a point of focus for CB. We only draft 1 that would really surprise me.

I get the second chance for Hines. He was reliable with the ball once the regular season started. But he felt like a fumble waiting to happen every time he lined up as a kick returner in the ` preseason. There was a reason the coaches kept him away from that job the rest of the year.

As for Rogers, he started the year poorly, but I thought his receiving was much better the second half of the season....and he was rock solid as a punt returner. I hope they keep him.

I thought Rogers started to show better as the year went along too. It feels like Luck has never been gone after last season. However in fairness to

Rogers we have not had a very stable QB situation to start his career. Maybe his break out is yet to come.

  8. 3 hours ago, Hoose said:

I would agree with that grouping if you added Rogers in there. He has value as both a receiver and returner. He's proven to be reliable in punt returns and that is invaluable. Anyone remember the debacle that was Hines in that role? Yeesh.

All that said, I agree that Inman has a place with this group. I hope they sign him.

I agree Rogers value as a punt returner can't be over looked. It's not like with KO returns where you can get away with just sticking someone back there. It certainly doesn't guarantee Rogers anything but it's a leg up on a roster spot.

I have had a real threat in the return game on my wishlist for a long time. There is a kid in this draft from the University of Georgia that will have you on the edge of your seat every time he touches the ball. Mecole Hardman has that kind of explosive game breaking ability. He's a little raw as a WR but he'd make an immediate impact in the return game immediately while he adjusts. I'd love to see him wear the horseshoe.

I watched a few clips. Had not paid much attention before. I like his size. LJ is a big back who moves like a scat back. Hes got good vision, good feet and he runs with patience. And like you said hes a good receiver. I think he could stand to be more physical. Sometimes i think hes trying to be too pretty out there

He could be a nice compliment to Mack. He could also help take the pressure off Wilkins while allowing Hines to focus on his role if Mack can't go.

There are going to be guys like this with 3 down ability available that may be better in a rotation into day 3 in this draft. I'm not sure what we are looking for but I think it's become obvious we want to add something to the RB room.

I'd love Montgomery to fall to a spot Ballard would pull the trigger. I like Scott Snell and Dexter Williams as big backs playing the thunder role. Pollard is interesting and the kid from Oklahoma Anderson. He was thought to be at the top of this class before the injuries. He might be worth the gamble depending on medicals.

TBH I'm more concerned with our RB group than I am with our WR group.  Funchess is going to turn out to be a great addition

I think the RB group could use some help too. I like Mack he did a great job when he was healthy last season. Hines was good as our receiving back. Wilkins showed he could play Sunday ball spelling Mack. When those 3 guys were healthy the backfield looked fine.

When Mack wasn't able to go the backfield struggled.  I think CB and Reich saw this as and that's why we brought Ajayi in for a look. This isn't a knock on any of our guys. They are great in their roles but when Mack wasn't  there our backs looked a lot like our WR's without TY.

The WR group didn't have a guy that could be a WR1 We signed Fuchness to remedy that problem. I think we need to add a guy to the RB mix to help if Mack can't go.

That could be Ajayi depending on what happened during his visit. We could draft a 1A type guy. I think  Montgomery would be ideal in that role or maybe we just add more competition The word is we are high on Williams.

Hes not a first rounder for me. Hes not an absolute game wrecker like elliot or Barkley or as elite coming out of college like mccaffery. To take a top pick on a position that has less and less relevancy too winning a game and using it on a guy who wasnt really truly starting on his college team. I'll take Snell or Montgomery before him. We can sit here and talk BPA all day long but there is so much talent in this draft that he wont be BPA at 26 especially when there is a run on QBs like there is every year and if by some miracle he is BPA at 26 then trade back..

If we take a RB in this class Dave Montgomery is the kid I want too. I think he's the most complete back in the draft. He can run it between the T's and is a very good receiver out of the backfield. He reminds me of Kareem Hunt and that's who many compare him to. He would fit Ballard's looker room mold perfectly.  He's a 3 down guy at 5'10 222lbs the ideal size

  12. I think if somehow a RB is head and shoulders above every other player when it’s our selection that will be the pick. Its been established if it’s a close call then we are adding to our fronts. I have a difficult time seeing a scenario in this draft where RB is the pick in the early rounds.

I don’t think RB has been removed from the draft board. In fact based on our  interest in Ajayi I think we may be looking to add to that room. I am a fan of the RB’s that we have on the roster but it’s not a group that can’t be upgraded.

Also, the call being overturned early when there was clearly no evidence to overturn killed the momentum. I hate to blame it on that, but it hurt in a game when you needed some breaks.

The fumble on the kick return I think is what you are talking about. Yeah we’d have had the ball in the red zone and momentum. A TD or at least a FG and playing from out front rather than from behind. That really hurt and it was exactly what we needed to be pull the upset.

  14. I am looking at the beginning of a stretch of years that will define Luck’s career and I believe earn his place in the HOF. I think with Ballard and Reich he has the opportunity for rings. We need to add a little more fire power on both sides of the ball. It was our O that could not get going vs KC. I’m confident that will get taken care of.

If multiple rings is going to happen Andrew has to control his inner Brett Farvre. I love Luck wouldn’t want anyone else under C but for a guy as smart as he is man does he have a tendency to make some bad decisions. Those may come from always feeling like he has to make the play. That feeling should slowly turn into trust of his teammates especially the D as the team develops. I look for big things from Luck the next 5-8 years

  15. Hey man I like what you did here as far as the positions you addressed. I’m not a huge Jones fan would much rather take Tillery. I think the only way we get Burns is flipping the first 2 picks as you said. It would still require luck but I’d love for it to happen.

The 5th round I’d rather have Mecole Hardman from UGA. I really hope we draft this kid. He’s  true home run threat in 2 phases of the game Tyreek Hill 2.0. He would be the most dangerous KR/PR we’ve seen starting day 1. I think the kids going to be special. Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t be that upset with Renfro. Like I said like what you did here.

Huge ND fan, and as far as Miles Boykin is concerned, it was hard to get a read on him. The QB last season was limited in the throws he could make, and anything further than 20 yards downfield severely effected his accuracy, in fact he was pretty awful. This is why Clemson teed off on them during the playoff game (among other reasons lol). It will be interesting to see how he develops with an NFL-talent QB, could really be a diamond in the rough. He has all of the measurables, and tested well at the combine, so I def wouldn't be surprised to see him excel in the NFL.

I’m a big Irish fan too and I’ll second that. Boykin didn’t play much 3 yrs ago with Kizer under C. Then 2 seasons ago and into this year he played with Wimbush as his QB. Wimbush was a dual threat guy with a strong arm but his running was ahead of his passing. Ian Book who took over after a few games last season was by far the best QB Myles played with. I didn’t think he was as bad as you nor did I think his arm was that bad. I do agree Myles was limited by the QB’s at ND. I’m interested to see him at the next level. He’s going to be one of those guys who’s a better pro.

I don’t think Book was the main problem vs Clemson. They had better players then we did was the biggest problem. Then Julian Love who shuts down his half of your field left the game. Clemson throws TD’s where he would have been on back to back drives. They jumped out to the lead we never recovered. It illustrates how valuable Love was to that D easily the MVP to me We needed the breaks to go our way for the Irisb to pull that upset.

Probably.  Farley will most likely be a Colt with that 2nd round tender.  He’s underrated IMO.

Odum started out pretty bad, but I saw improvement towards the end of the season.  He’s a serviceable #4 we could do better.

With Geathers injury history, I’m sure they’d love to find someone to pair with Hooker in the future.

I agree Farley will be back. I also think he’s underrated ideally he’s a back up

or comes on as a third S. He has done well starting. The guy always seems to make his presence felt.

We have Hooker Geathers Farley and Odum as we sit a S. I feel like that’s a spot we look to add competition to early in the draft. Gardner-Johnson is the kid I’d like to draft even if it takes our first rounder.

The versatility he’d bring would impact the  back end  day one. He can play any S role at the line, single high you name it. He has experience at CB mainly playing the slot. He can do it all back there

So what's your player comp for him?

How about a kid who’s been drawing comparisons to Tyler Lockett and Tyreek Hill? I think he compares to Hill.  He’s doesn’t have the resume of Lockett who was coming off back to back 1000 yard seasons coming out of MSU.

Mecole Hardman has the wiggle to get past the first guy then that special burst to top speed. He is an explosive playmaker a true home run threat who impacts 2 phases of the game.

It’s his ability to change the game on special teams that sets him apart. The kid is a dangerous return man. He can take it to the house in a blink of the eye.

He is a speed guy no question but he plays with a toughnesss. He has only scratched the surface of his talent. When the balls in his hands he reminds me of Ty Hill. If he is even he is leavin I think the kid is going to be special.

    Good points

My post really wasn't about how bad the team is, I am excited by our roster improvements

We have  few holes, and some lack of depth.

With the roster today, if we have 2-3 injuries at key positions, we could miss the playoffs completely

CB seems like a position that we arent far away from

But, like at OT, I dont see a player on the current roaster that is going to get groomed to play LT

AC is nearing end of contract

I believe that CB will pull the trigger on a OT to develop in the first 3 rounds

At WR, we have some young guys, and have hope that they develop into better players, but I truly dont see a game changer coming up , or in the works. Maybe with the youth we get a WR3 or WR4

I believe that CB will pull the trigger on a WR in the first 2 rounds

At LB, we have some developing youngsters, but if Leonard goes down, for any length of time, we are in serious trouble

I believe that CB will pull the trigger on a LB in the first 4 rounds

There isn’t a team that doesn’t have a problem if they lose 2 or 3 guys at a key position. That being said I agree with you on most points. We are thin behind Leonard and needs to be addressed in the draft. I also believe we add a T. as well as help at S.

I don’t see a WR in the first 2 rounds. We have a group of young guys we are developing  and it’s premature to decide none of those guys will reach their ceiling.

For me the strength of this WR class in the middle rounds. If we grab a guy I think it’ll be there. I would love to get Mecole Hardman. I think we see the trenches addressed early.
