  1. It's totally acceptable for him to say what he did. It's a poker game, man. He's posturing. Even if he has every intention of trading the 1st pick if we get it, the smart thing to do is act like you want to keep it, cause it basically raises the asking price. If we acted like we have no interest in picking him and really want to trade away the pick, we'd be much more likely to get lesser offers for it. It's a smart move, period.

exactly what i was going to say!

  2. Jacob Tamme can get us a 3rd rounder. Gary Brackett could snag a 4th, Donald Brown could get a 5th. No real value, unless the Colts wanna trade a big name. They can get a first round pick for Reggie, but they should never trade him.

3rd for a backup te that hasn't played this year? never going to happen.

4th for a over payed small mlb coming of a injury? not going to happen.

5th for a 3rd string rb that has hardly played? not going to happen.

1st for a older wr on the decline who is probably going to want a big contract? not going to happen.

  3. Mathis, Freeney, Manning, and perhaps Bethea, are the only players who would garner significant return. And I'm not willing to part with any of them, unless we get a huge bank of picks and/or players for Mathis. The others? Absolutely not.

    manning will never be traded!

mathis is a free agent, so there won't be a trad there.

freeney is going to make 14.5 million in salary and cost the colts 5 million in cap money if they trade him (19.5 million cap number next year). it's VERY tough to trade older players with that kind of salary.

you would never get a 1st for bathea, so there's nothing to gain.

  4. Contrary to what people seem to think, we can't trade people who are disappointing us and hope to get much.

Dallas Clark is cold right now. He wouldn't bait a big tag. People will now question his age, his wrist, etc.

Melvin Bullitt is on IR, and wasn't playing that well anyway. He wouldn't fetch us anything worthwhile.

Anthony Gonzalez wouldn't net us anything significant.

Reggie Wayne is playing well, but he's on his last legs, is having a down year (because of the absence of his QB), and will want a retirement-style contract. He wouldn't gain us anything.

Gary Brackett has a small body that has betrayed him for a few years now. He wouldn't get us anything.

In other words, the types of trades people want to make just aren't there for us.

Our best bet would be to trade down - assuming we finish poorly enough to have a top 5 pick.

    correct!

fans always think their teams players are worth much more than they really are.

  5. i can't believe all the clark haters in this thread. where are all the "clarke is one of the best te's in the league" posters?? i have said for a long time (probably two or more forums ago) clark is WAY overrated and the colts should have never given him top te money.

  6. There is no perfect year for manning to be injured, whoever said that is crazy.. if manning wasnt injured colts fans wouldnt even be paying attention to andrew luck, the colts play to win and thats the only way they are gonna play..

most people could realize that the meaning was, if manning is going to get injured than this is the perfect year.

  7. If you're going to suck -- and not make the playoffs -- which is what's going to happen this season, you really might as well suck all the way.

The worst that can happen is to go 7-9 and get the 18th pick or something.

If you're going to miss the playoffs you might as well go 1-15. You get a #1 pick (most likely) that you can use or trade for a nice return and you get to play an easier schedule in 2012.

    i completely agree!

this is the perfect year for manning to be hurt and to be terrible. there is a franchise qb coming out that the colts will draft and rebuild if manning can't return or trade for several good picks to help the team if manning can return. top picks, manning back, and a last place schedule, how could it get any better!

  8. Perhaps. I'm watching the Colts games, which games are you watching?

A few other things, why do you take a comment about Angerer and then mention team stats to support your point? I've mentioned in numerous threads the things I don't like about the D. But I'm able to separate the D scheme and the play of individual players.

Also the Colts are 21st in ypc. Which considering they were 31 or 32 after the first game means they have been playing better and better. None of that changes that most of Angerers tackles in the rush game are within 3 yards of the LOS not 5-10 yards as you want to indicate.

maybe you are watching the carson california colts.

until the stream i was watching cut off angerer's stops on runs were 4,0,1,6,6,11 yards down field. is that specific enough for you?

  9. N

Except that most of Angerer's tackles are not 5-10 yards down the field and even fewer of his run tackles are that far down the field. Most of his tackles in the running game at within 3 yards of the LOS. Passing game is different because it's a pass.

i guess we are watching different games. if you were right, the defense would be getting off the field faster than they are. the colts are 28th in rushing defense.

  10. Again, just last week 21 tackles was a case for Angerer to be starting over Brackett. Now it's a sign that he isn't good. Which is it? People can't have it both ways.

if the same poster flip flops, you make a valid point. but if different people are taking a different but consistent position, this isn't a valid point. you can't take everyone and say they are one. you will always have people on both sides of a topic. that's what makes discussions interesting.

  11. Jim is explaining here why number of tackles is a misleading statistic. If a defense is doing its job, they would actually have very few tackles. The best thing a defense can do, other than force takeaways, is cause an offense to go 3 & out, and the Colts defense is terrible on 3rd down. In fact, the Colts are the 31st WORST defense on 3rd downs, giving up 48% of the conversion attempts against them.

Conversely, the Ravens defense, which is 31st in NUMBER OF TACKLES, is 6th in 3rd down %, and 2nd in scoring, allowing only 14.2 points per game.

When people measure defenses by tackles or yards, they're not really getting the picture. 3rd down and scoring defense are the defensive stats that matter. Getting your team off the field, and keeping the other team out of the endzone, that is how you win games. Tack on the fact that our defense is on the field longer than any other team's defense on average, and the problems only compound as the game goes on.

    very good post!

  12. number of tackles made dosent cut it, how many yards did they gain before the tackle is what counts.

    thank you!!

this is exactly why i am not on the angerer bandwagon. like i have said before, making tackles 5-10 yards down field just doesn't cut it as a linebacker!

  13. i remember hearing on the news a week or two ago that the eagles were having a hard time converting on short yardage situations. i laughed and thought, welcome to muddville. that can't be a coincidence. my brother in law is a big eagles fan, i can't wait to hear his opinion.

  14. I thought Ijilana did a real good job. Little to no drop off from Costonzo.

Against Adrian Clayborn he held his own. Then after Ijilana went out with the injury, Linkenbach could not block Clayborn, and the game shifted twords Tampa Bay. I felt Ijilana's injury killed us.

i completely agree. i don't know what people are watching that said he played bad.

  15. wayne is a good receiver without manning, and mathis is a good end without freeney. neither should be given big contracts. both should be offered similar contracts to what they have now. to the original post, mathis is who i would keep if i had to choose only one.
