To me the most interesting thing about this offseason is what Ballard does with the O line . If he likes the way Clark looked , we might not see much activity here. If  he doesn't trust him , I think he probably spends a buck in FA and gives Clark a little more time.

I hope we spend some money there regardless. Competition is good so is depth. We know that unit never stays healthy.

IMO , a real long shot to remain with the team. Because of inconsistent play and big injury concern , he has very little value to most , in not all teams. Thus for him to get what might be his best deal , he's going to have to just see what his best offer is in free agency . So very unlikely the Colts would make an offer he would jump at even if they did want to retain him.

Agree. I think Thornton is gone and we aren't losing much. He'll land on a team tho. I think we need to add a veteran to the mix in FA to come in and compete with Haeg and Clark and Good and see how that shakes out. JMO

Well, in all fairness Pagano and Grigson had been preaching that too when they started. Didn't really work out too well for them, although DL was good in 2015 and OL was maybe coming together late in 2016.

Grigson preached it but he failed miserably. He didn't have one FA offensive linemen work out. He tried to patch a huge gaping hole in the pass rush by signing an over the hill Trent Cole. I'm glad Grigson is gone. We'll see if Ballard practices what he preaches

I just saw today that McShay released his first round mock on ESPN Insider and has Dalvin Cook to the Colts in the first round. I'd embed the tweet that I saw that in, but it's a fellow Colts fan, so naturally it was laced with profanity in reaction to the pick.

lol I don't think he'll go RB in the first. 2nd or 3rd I wouldn't be surprised. I think an impact DL or LB will be his first selection.

  5. I think its pretty clear that Ballard understands that the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball is priority. Finally someone understands that. Whether it be FA and draft the OL still needs talent. I think the left side and C is set. Right side is still in flux and not sure that the picks that Grigson made last year are gonna be the answer. I look for Ballard to draft an impact defensive linemen or Rush LB in the first round. So, I think a vet free agent on the OL could be an option. I think Ballard is going to draft a young RB for the future fairly early this year.

Things Ballard said.   He doesn't meddle in how the coach uses the players, that the players have to earn the right to be a Colt, we should get at least 4 good players every draft, he likes defense, he drafts BPA.

I see him drafting BPA and letting them battle it out for supremacy.  Someone like Morrison or even Ridgeway and McGill will have to fight for their spots. No job is safe.  If you assume 4 good players and he brings in a FA or 2 (he is cautious about this).  That's now 5-6 players this year. That in and of itself can change a .500 team into a playoff team in AFC South.  He and Dorsey turned around KC quickly.

I just hope that by BPA he doesn't mean drafting a WR in round 1 and bypassing a future defensive player of the year in the process...if you get my analogy

To be fair, if memory serves, it was Chuck Pagano that personally worked out TJ Green predraft and it was he that became enamored with Green.  Ergo, my suspicion is that T.J. Green was more of a Pagano selection than a Grigson pick.  Just sayin. :)

I agree that I don't see corner being his thing, though.  I think he has potential at safety.  He's still very young and he dealt with some injury issues last year.  Way premature to already give-up on him like so many here seem to want to do.  He really is going to have to step it up significantly over the next two years, though, or this pick too will be yet another Pagano / Grigson bust.  I really hold this one over the head of Pagano, though, based on my understanding of the pre-draft vetting process that went down.

You could be right but I don't think that grigson was the kind of guy who got talked into much in the draft room. I could be wrong but just a suspicion. Green has a long way to go, I'll leave it at that.

A change in GM equals increased roster turnover compared to standard.  No loyalty to underperforming draft picks, questionable fits for scheme adjustments, aging vets.....

It's interesting to consider potential winners and losers among the players...obviously depends a lot on who is selected.

First young player that comes to my mind who is more vulnerable now than before...Antonio Morrison.

First vet player that comes to mind....Frank Gore.

Lets hope! This roster is weak. It needs turnover. I agree about Morrison. Plenty of other dead weight on that defense too. Ballard will put his stamp on it.

I have somewhat of open kind now with Ballard and I believe we have a few intriguing young players ppl might not fully realize that could help us  on D

players I like an have upside

    Henry Anderson DE

    Hassan Ridgeway DT

    Antonio Morrison ILB

    Clayton Geathers S

    TJ Green CB / S

    Vontae Davis CB

listed green as corner I'd like to see him at corner ?

    Move on from

    Dqwell Jackson

    Arthur Jones

    Darius Butler

    mike Adams

I'm not going to be rude just state my difference of opinion: Morrison stunk this  year. Don't think that dude has a future here. Edwin Jackson does.

TJ Green? Im not a fan. I think he was way over valued by Grigson and I hope I'm wrong but I don't see the guy being a long term fit here.

Move on from Darius Butler? If not for him and his versatility the defensive backfield would have been even worse than it was this year. He wont cost much to keep. He's worth it.

I'm torn on Mike Adams, he may have a season of good play left in him but if they want youth I agree with that.

I think they are playing with fire if they go with Geathers and Green as the starting safeties.

Also need to trade Allen. Another game where he's outperformed by UDFA TEs. I'll take a 5th rounder for him at this point. Cut Dorsett too. It's not like it's uncommon nowadays for high round picks to be cut.

Allen has no trade value. No one will give anything for him. They wasted that money. S T U P I D. Tired of Grigson's trash heap. He needs to go.

My thought is that Pagano, and Irsay may have more input into the process than you're describing. I don't think Grigson is ignorant to what either of the others feel. They should all have input on where they're going and how to get there. I even believe the coordinators will have some input, as well. I'd also have to believe that, though Irsay isn't a meddler, Grigson, being a new(ish) GM may have parameters where he'd at least need to run his thoughts by Irsay.

Now, in my mind that's logical. However, I'd have to believe that all teams are set up a bit differently, and none of us have knowledge of exactly how things flow with the Colts right now. Heck, I'd bet that my above scenario wasn't the case when Polian was here.

You could be right I guess but I personally don't believe that Irsay gets involved much in the personnel issues. He certainly could from time to time but I don't think he's involving himself in the scouting etc of players. Pagano probably has a little more say than that. JMO

Truth.  Gruden played a significant role in helping the Bucs get to and win the Super Bowl.  Dungy's Bucs had trouble beating Philly.  Gruden's Bucs beat Philly in their Super Bowl season

I don't think Gruden is going to coach again. I know you guys are talking about the Bucs but Gruden put together a few really good seasons in Oakland before going to Tampa as well. He has experience going deep into the playoffs. Having said that, I still dont think he'll coach again.

I wouldn't be surprised, or upset, either way. Well, depending on who the replacement would be, or course.

I understand the arguments both ways, and none of us know what's really going on on 56th st. Who made what decisions, etc.

I'm not sure what you mean by that? Grigson is the GM. He has complete control over the personnel decisions. He MAY get input from Pagano but Grigson is the guy pulling the strings 99% of the time. I can't see Irsay meddling in personnel matters unless its a rare occasion. Pagano certainly doesn't tell Grigson how to set up his draft board. He may throw in his opinion on some guys and probably on some free agents he may have experience with but Grigson's the guy making the decisions.

    I agree.

I think something extraordinary would need to take place for them to be let go this year.

I think next season will the make or break year for either/both of them.

Ya, If I were Irsay I'd let Grigson have another year of failed FA signings and crappy to mediocre draft before I'd let him go. I mean we can always use another 1st round WR who doesnt pan out.

That was sarcasm of course. I know what you're saying, they both just got new contracts so it would be tough to let em go at this point. I'm ready for a change.

The offense is actually tied for 7th in points scored.  If you subtract the Tolzien game, they are number 3 in the league.

We need a defense.  Yeah, I know, breaking news.

If we had another legit pass rush threat besides Walden and another solid CB I think the defense moves from bottoms in the league to average, one that you could count on to get off the field on 3rd down. With our offense thats all we need to be a playoff team year in and year out.

If Luck can play that well vs David Carr on the road he should certainly get some consideration as comeback player of the year and also possibly considered back in the elite QB category.

11th in passing yards, 5th in passing td's, 8th in passer rating on the season. I'd say this is just another typical Luck year despite having been sacked the 3rd most in the NFL once again.

I have no problem feeling like we can win out.  I don't feel too  skeptical about us beating Oakland.  The rest of the scenarios are not likely to happen though.  Can't see Jax beating TN in any realm.  Can see Houston losing to Cincy, but I don't see the TN loss to Jax at all.

We'd be more likely successful if we were able to reverse the orbit of the earth and return to Sunday December, 11 and replay the Houston game. Maybe this time the Colts would actually show up to play? It's plausible

I'm sure some changes will be made, but I'm not sure it will be totally in line with what we are thinking.   This coaching staff likes to cover the pass with Safeties so it wouldn't shock me if they didn't draft a bunch of coverage linebackers.  They may improve the speed level, but it may not be necessarily from the draft.  Hopefully they will, but we have to prepare ourselves for something Grigs and Chuckish!

    I'm hoping for a change

Resign Walden and draft a pass rusher to help him out.

Agree, Walden has been worth the contract and I would like to see him come back. Guys like him, that can play the run and rush the passer with some success don't grow on trees. He would be hard to replace. I think he's a prioroty

As long as Grigs and Pags get me at least 2 very solid pass rushers out of this off season draft and FA periods, talent added to secondary, add aditional D line talent, II can deal with having E. Jack and Morrison as the starters. You can't solve every problem in one off season. Its clear they like to cover with safeties. Green and Geathers can do that. Personally I really like Edwin Jackson. They may turn around and do opposite of what I'm saying, but by this time we should know Chuck and Ryan by now.

Man, I don't think I can deal with Morrison as a starter. He's gonna have to get way better for me to feel good about that. I think of all the positions in the NFL where you can find quality, not only in the draft but in FA as well, for a reasonable price its ILB. I think we can do better than Morrison in the short term. I like E. Jackson and I think he's only gonna get better. Pair him with someone of similar talent and we have a good middle linebacking corp.
