A lot of this is on the game plan.  It was a major problem with Pep at the helm, and I was very disappointed to see this happen again this past year.  We need to fix this going into this season.  Hopefully an improved OL will help do the trick.

Yes.  Our D last year was not very good, and what we'll have this year remains to be seen.  However, when we go down early, it puts a major burden on the O and the D.  It makes the O become 1 dimensional (i.e., down 21-3 means it's hard to focus on running the ball or keeping time of possession as a priority) and it disallows the D to focus on getting after the QB and creating turnovers.

Mathis and Freeney were both very good players in their time here, but a major part of that is because Peyton's teams rarely were spotting other teams 14, 20, 21, etc. point leads out of the gates.  The majority  of the time, those two could pin their ears back and just rush the QB.  I don't think Freeney would have had near the career he had (he was terrible against the run) if he was on a team playing catch up most of the time.

I'm not convinced we have a sure pass-rusher on this team (I like the prospect of Basham and Heard), and if we're not playing with leads I really don't see anyone of a mediocre/average bunch jumping out and helping us improve here.

We do not need Luck throwing 50 times per game.  Especially coming off shoulder surgery (on a shoulder that's bothered him for at least 2 years), and especially since at this point we're only hoping that our line will be better.  We need an efficient and successful game plan for early in games, allowing us to put points up early and play with a lead or even throughout the remainder of the game.  This should allow for us to go to a balanced offensive attack.  Right now, we're starting games off slow and then we're forced to change our entire game plan later on to force things, etc...

I, for one, do not want to see Luck being forced to throw the ball 50+ times a game very often, especially this season.  It looks like he's lost a bit of weight (probably not able to lift the upper body), and shoulder injuries/surgeries are always a touchy subject, especially when your job requires you to throw a football under pressure all game long.

I don't agree with Chud being fired yesterday (he did a very good job keeping our team at .500 when Luck got hurt and we were using Hasselbeck, Whitehurst, and others -- all who had a crappy OL and a depleted WR corps).  Last year, the OL seemed to develop in the last 1/4 of the season, but prior to that, they were not very good.  Moncrief being injured at times, Dorsett's lack of impact (I guess there's an argument: was he utilized wrong, or was it on him), a shotty OL, and a poor defense did not help our cause with game-planning.

However, I think you're correct, TY and Dorsett are smaller, shiftier guys who both run sub 4.4 and Moncrief is a bigger straight-away guy who is sub 4.4.  We also have Ferguson and Mack who should be able to thrive in a screen game, and Swoope is an athletic enough TE to the point where he should be able to make some plays on short passes.

If you watch teams like Pittsburgh, they almost use the screen as a run game.  They are rarely getting less than 4-5 yards per screen pass, and often times they're opening it up for longer gains.  They also are able to use it to open up their passing attack and running game more (e.g., you fall asleep thinking AB is going to keep killing you with the screen game and next thing he's behind the secondary hauling in the deep ball).

I sure hope Chud and Co. figure this out this year.

The key to a good screen game is your offensive line. Maybe that's part of the reason we don't run a lot of them.

we had a lot of injuries on defense last year

grigson was bad, but any team that gets down to 5th and 6th string cornerbacks is going to lose some games

I wont argue that with you but Grigson failed to address the pass rush and in the end that lack of pass rush was the worst of a list of defensive issues.

I get that. But as a QB, you just can't spot the other team an 18 point lead. You're not gonna come back and win those games the majority of the time

How does the QB, who doesn't play defense, spot the other team 18 points???? If I remember right this was one of Dwayne Allen's games were he had IDK how many drops. I could be wrong about Allen's performance but the slow starts by the offense are not all on LUCK.

    Unlucky picks?

No such thing stitches. Like they said in the podcast, know when to the throw the ball away & live to fight another down.

I have to differ with you on this one. In my opinion an unlucky pick is a pick that you really cant put on the QB. Example: QB throws a nice ball and it bounces off a receivers hands and in intercepted, a ball batted at the line that is intercepted. I'll agree there is no way to quantify those things, they are picks in the stat sheet but its impossible to tell with any certainty how those picks were generated and I also agree that every QB in the league is susceptible to those types of stats so it's probably just as even across the league.

Hey guys. Sorry I haven't been on. I'm on vacation in South Africa. Missing a lot of football news haha

So I'm scrolling and I see hankins's comments and was shocked. So can our defense atleast match the production of our offense

I don't think it can. Not until we get a legit big time pass rusher. We don't have one yet. It could be an improved pass rush but until we prove we can put consistent pressure on the passer no.

  6. Im not going to disagree with the idea that Ballard is cleaning house. But I think he has upgraded at ILB, OLB. Don't underestimate what one really good Rush LB can do for a defense. If he is able to get a guy that can produce 12 sacks or a combination of guys who together put up 16-20 this defense becomes a heck of a lot better and we're probably back to 11 wins. But, in order take that next step and be ready to compete for the AFC title I agree there has to be a number of upgrades, CB, S, etc besides the stud Rush LB. I think we will significantly upgrade some positions from this draft or atleast have the chance to. I still think this draft can put us back into contention for the AFC south and more but all of it depends more on Luck's recovery.

I think it absolutely was his downfall.   He waited 3 years too long to try and rebuild the OL and he also failed to upgrade the LBs and DBs.

Of course, the crazy timing of Manning missing the year, resulting in having the pick to get Luck, also factored in.

The strange thing is, and nobody seems to ever mention this, back in, I believe it was, the early summer of 2010, Irsay put out a cryptic tweet about HUGE changes coming in the next 18 months.  I remember thinking, what the heck does THAT mean!?  Then, as fate would have it, Manning missed the entire 2011 season and Polian and Caldwell were fired!  Like what the heck gives with that Irsay tweet that seems to have foretold the drastic changes we witnessed?

The main thing that killed Bill was when Tarik Glenn unexpectedly retired and he traded a future #1 pick to draft Tony Ugoh in the 2nd round and Ugoh never panned out. It was a killer. Granted, the talent on the line was beginning to thin by then but this was the lynch pin that gave way.

You all maybe taking this too lightly..... based on HOW and WHAT Irsay and Pagano said about Luck's progress I am concerned. They are worried and their reply is to set the expectation that Luck maybe out for a longer time than the first mini-camp. Whenever you go under the knife there is all sorts of things that can go wrong, not to mention infection and other type of complication. Surgeons are not PERFECT and so don't assume anything.

Any labrum injury in a throwing athlete is cause for concern

If Ballard was successful in signing Jeffrey who makes $14 million per season, and knowing T.Y. has a big contract, Do you think he would want to add another big contract to a 3rd WR(Moncreif) ?

It all depends on what Moncrief would draw at the time. That and the kind of value that Ballard would place on having 3 top end receivers.

He was reportedly in on Jeffrey and then signed Aiken. Both are physical receivers. Obviously he felt a need for that type of player.

No offense intended but just because he may want physical receivers doesn't have anything to do with Moncrief's future with team.

  11. 9 hours ago, LJpalmbeacher said:

as we know Moncreif's rookie contract will expire after this season and I haven't heard anything about a extension.

We all know he is talented and see flashes of it. But he really hasn't had a breakout season yet for various reasons. However he does this season, I think he will command a nice contract on the market.

The Colts are not really in Win Now mode and may not want another big long term contract for another wr. If that's the case, then maybe Ballard will try and get something for him before he is lost to FA.

They already have shown they want a Bigger, more physical WR by pursuing Jeffreys and now signing Aiken. Also, on the first day of FA, the exact time it was rumored that it was down to the Eagles or Colts to get Jeffreys JMV was perplexed that Moncreif made some tweet, possibly being angry? Maybe you guys know something about it.

Now its reported the Colts are in on WR Streeter....hmmm....

    thoughts...

I think its pretty far fetched to think that Moncrief's days are numbered. I think Ballard wants to increase the talent level at the position and it has nothing to do with Moncrief.

"I know we are rebuilding...but please still buy tickets."

    Just kidding...sort of.

Its pretty clear from what Ballard is doing in FA he did not like the roster and rightly so. Grigson ran the roster into the ground the last 3 years and now Ballard has to try to duct tape it back together without breaking the bank and I think he's doing a good job so far.

  13. Like it or not Melvin is going to be in the mix. We'll draft a player high at CB and the competition will be wide open to start camp. There is nothing saying that Melvin cannot improve on what I thought was a decent season from him last year. He got thrown into the fire and I thought he played pretty decent given the circumstances.

I'm fine with Butler being one of the leaders on D as long as it is from the sidelines, the slot or S.

I wanted to see McDougland signed at S. He can play either spot so we should like that. That could still happen.

I don't see Butler being asked to play LCB. He'll play slot and S and do real well there. I think we draft a new CB to replace the hole that has been there since Pagano arrived.

I agree that there is a lot of blame at Grigson but blaming him for any of Lucks injuries is taking it too far.

The way Luck plays he is more responsible for getting injured than anything Grigson did or didn't do.

He plays like Big Ben I agree. But Grigson's failed attempts at putting together an offensive was a huge failure and led to Luck being sacked at an unbelievable rate. So, Luck could get rid of it quicker and slide faster but Grigson had plenty of time and attempts at the plate to put an O line together an he whiffed, over and over and over again.

Thoughts???? I've made it very clear I think we are. I've said what I think. Just want some input.

No one has said much about Luck's shoulder surgery lately. Not know what he really had done to the shoulder but knowing that the shoulder is the most complicated joint in the human body and is the most difficult to fix I think it bears stating that if Luck does not come back 100% then we HAVE wasted his career. When I say "we" I mean Ryan Grigson.

At least the players being brought in are relatively young and Ballard may believe that some of them may improve and become fixtures on the team.  Unfortunately, I don't see Pagano as a coach that can take mediocre players to the next level.

Yes, young players with something yet to prove. That's good in a way. We'll see if this approach works out. Based on who has signed I think we have not taken a step back compared to who we lost. The one player I am watching is Butler. I think it would be wise to bring him back. He can help this team.

No one he's signed is a foundational player. Stop gaps, all of them, a couple with the potential to be pretty good starters for a year or two, a couple of project level players. The only guy we've officially considered who would be even close to a building block would be Poe, and he evidently wants a short term deal.

So, yes, the plan is still to build through the draft. And that won't be done in one year.

Yes, so far most of the signings are players that are coming in to compete. As you say, not core players. The draft is and will always be the most important aspect of roster building. We'll see how good Ballard is come the end of April

I only said that because he has the athleticism to cover a lot of ground in a small amount of time.  If he's playing deep where all the action is in front of him, he can just read and react.  Read the QBs eyes, then go to wherever the ball goes.  Just a thought

That would seem logical given his athleticism but I've been saying that his lack of instincts slows him down and works against his natural speed.
