Marino was such an outlier for his times.  I got to see him play a couple times and his vision and release was tremendous.

Yet, for all his numbers he only made it to one SB and was 8-10 in playoff games in 17 years.

Yes, Marino and the Dolphins were such an interesting team for that time. They would have done well in today's NFL. Obvioulsy its been discussed to death why the Dolphins never won a SB. In that era the run game was still supreme and they didn't have one. Other teams were able to control the ball when it counted and keep Marino off the field. Plus I don't think Miami ever had a defense that was championship caliber.

I agree that they would not have been a top 10 D even with Phillips.

how much better do you realistically think wade could have made this defense with all things considered? Im just curious. I have no argument that wade is one of the best defensive coaches in the NFL but with the lack of talent and injuries what do you think? 10 spots better? 15? My point is I blame the majority of the defensive mess on Grigson and not Monachino, who was in his first year and had nothing to work with.

Doesn't mean that Green can't be better and if you pay attention to what I wrote it was "TJ may improve so it could potentially be 5".  Notice I said may improve.  Morrison didn't suck against the run.  That's what he was brought here for and that is what he is.  A 2 down player.  He does suck against the pass, but that's really not his reason for being here.  As long as they use him for what he was brought here for he'll live up to that and be useful.

I didn't mean any disrespect. I saw Morrison a number of times look lost. Like he had no idea where he was supposed to be. I did not think he played well at all. Green has a long long way to go. I hope Im wrong but I don't think either one will amount to much. This is my opinion. I will gladly eat my words if they do come around.

Yes he could.  He could not have made them great but they would have done a lot better with Wade than Monachino.

I just disagree. I don't think wade could have made this defense a "good" defense. There were no pass rushers on this defense. I might be wrong but I just don't think the talent was there to make them a top 10 defense. Could he have done better than Monachino? sure, Ill agree with that.

I think our draft position is great. There's enough great players in this draft to get 3-4 impactful players to me. Looks like we may have gotten at least 4 out of the last draft if Clark pans out. Which I think he will. TJ may improve so it could potentially be 5 between Kelly, Clark, Haeg, Ridgeway, Green. If the team is okay with keeping a two down run stuffer on the roster for running downs, then maybe even 6 with Morrison. For right now I say we got 4-5 solid players out of the last draft. If we get some really high impact players with the first 3 picks in this years draft along with a couple other solid guys we will be headed in the right direction.

    Morrison and Green both sucked

I'm all for giving Ted another year with this team. He didn't really have much to work with and I feel like he did well with what little talent he had to work with. I wanna give this guy some pass rush and a much improved secondary before I give him the axe.

That is a fact. If you only consider the secondary injuries this year he had to deal with it was really bad. Then throw in the fact that we had no one who could rush the passer and it its one of the worst defensive fronts in the nfl for pass rush. Then you have to consider the poor inside linebacker play until Edwin Jackson came along. What a recipe for failure.

Agreed to an extent. Sure we need better players, but I believe that Phillips is one of the best defensive coaches out there. I'm for improving the team whenever possible.

I agree with you but look at what wade has had to work with the last few seasons? Probably the best front 7 in all of football(last year for sure)and the secondary was pretty talented too. When  you can pressure the QB like they have the rest is easier. Wade is a great coach but with our talent on D he would be just another coach.

As Superman points out, the contract Allen got was pretty weird.

The fact that Allen got paid what he got paid and the fact that Doyle flat out out-performed him this year, means Doyle should have the opportunity to get paid as much or more.  I would like to see Doyle back, but my point is that he isn't an 'irreplacable player', we probably really only have 2 or 3 of them on our roster: Luck, Vontae, and TY (IMO, TY could be argued about).  Sure there are guys I would rather us keep and who I like on the Colts, but it isn't like we couldn't find someone for cheaper or in the draft that isn't comparable to Doyle.  Based on what his co-TE gets paid and based on the fact Doyle outperformed that guy, you are right, he is worth what Allen got paid last year.

That said, unless the team has a plan in place to release Allen this off-season or next if he is underperforming, it seems to me like having $13/year invested at the TE position is quite high given we desperately need to get better at several other positions like ILB, OLB, probably CB, probably DL, possibly the OL.... we have a pretty nice amount of cap space, so we should probably be able to afford bringing Doyle back.  However, if it comes down to bringing him back at a high price impacting our ability to address needs at positions we must improve at (ILB, OLB), then I would personally rather see us let him walk as we can get someone who is capable of performing at his level for likely less than we can get him.  TE is an important part of our offense, but I don't see us really skipping a beat on offense if we had to insert a different TE -- Doyle is good, but he's not like a Tony Gonzalez, Gronk, etc...

There are several TEs in FA who I think could function similarly to Doyle and who would come cheaper: Vernon Davis (his age is a concern, but he could be a stop-gap signing for a year for less than Doyle), Levine Toilolo, Jermaine Gresham, Ryan Griffin, even Jacob Tamme -- I think any of those guys will be less pricey than Doyle and I don't think we'd see a noticeable drop-off in production from the TE #1a.

I would be happy to see Doyle back in Indy, I just don't think he's worth overpaying for.  I appreciate what he's done here, and like him as a Colt and Indy native, but I don't think we'll ever see him be much more than an above average TE in this league.

I fully expect Doyle to be back. I think he's worth what Allen got. Banking on Allen to 1) stay healthy 2) produce consistently is dangerous and Swoope isn't ready to be the 1a or even 2 TE. I cant imagine that if Ballard watched the tape he wouldn't be impressed with Doyle. I agree that Doyle isn't gonna be a superstar. He's just gonna be a guy that you can count on to do the tough work and make the important catch and make a good block all game long. That's worth a lot. 13 million in cap space on TE isn't terrible. Unfortunately Grigson made that deal with Allen and now Ballard has to live with it. Hopefully it doesn't cost us Doyle.

Nobody is fixing this defense in 1 offseason...

A good start would be signing Williams or Poe at DT and Brown at ILB, if possible.

We need at least one player (starter) at every defensive position except maybe DE. That will take a couple years unless we try to buy a defense, which is ill-advised.

The offense is far from perfect, as well. That's why I won't be upset when we draft an o-lineman or RB in the first 3 rounds. The process will take at least two off-seasons, so I'm not going to cry if E. Jackson or R. Melvin has to start next season.

I also wont be upset if Gore and Turbin are our RBs next season, nor will it mess up my summer if we don't get to re-sign Doyle.

Any of these things will be just fine as long as we are making significant strides to get younger playmakers (especially on defense) and becoming a more balanced team. I'm not saying that we won't compete next season, just that we should be thinking about 15 draft picks and two FA periods before anything can be considered "fixed"

The way things sit, we need to sign some veteran free agents. Hopefully smart acquisitions. No way we go after Poe. He'll get big money and those guys hardly ever play up to the money they get. I look for us to sign a veteran ILB, CB or S, OL and then fortify things with the draft. I agree tho, its going to take more than one off season.

  10. OLB is a huge need. Having said that, first round draft pick should be the best available defensive player on the board at the time. Whether that be a DL, LB or DB. We need players at all 3 levels anyway. I don't think there is any doubt that we are going to have to sign a few mid level Free agents as well. But, we have to find our own player makers in the draft.

I don't understand why people have Pats picking him up, especially in the 1st round. I can see Oakland snagging him in the 2nd.

    *

Because a team like the pats have traditionally used guys with that same skill set as McCaffery and turned them into big weapons. They understand that he can be a big asset in the right kind of offense. Plus, they don't have a lot of holes to fill and can use the 32nd pick on a guy that isn't going to be on the field every down.

  12. He can be a star with the right team. The colts are not that team. He's not going to be a first down back. He's better suited as a change of pace back and a guy you can throw to out of the backfield and someone who can return punts. Very Darren Sproles like. As others say, luxury pick for a team like the colts who wouldn't use him right anyway.

Allen, Doyle, Swoope....... keep doyle if you can, but if someone gets stupid paying him, promote Swoope, hope he can block after a few ST years, and get a young guy to move in, hoping Allen stays healthy.... when DA isn't bitten by the injury bug, he's just as much an all around TE as Doyle, but with more big play ability.....I want Doyle back, but won't fret and can rationalize any decision they make, as long as the money saved if Doyle leaves, is best utilized, and not just left sitting......

    3

Your numbers don't bear that out. Doyle, in my opinion is a step above Allen in all the important TE catorgories and if  you want to throw in Health and consistency then he's definitely better. Allen is not worth what he got paid. Doyle is worth what Allen got paid. Thank you Ryan Grigson.

I don't think he's a must keep.  He is an above average TE, but it's not like he is a superstar that would break our team apart if he left.

Yes, exactly.  He's a good player, but he's not a great player worth overpaying for.  He should obviously get a raise, but he doesn't need to break our bank.  He isn't irreplacable.

Not really.  Swoope showed signs of improvement as a receiver last year, but not enough to be confident he's going to be the answer, plus he isn't the blocker Doyle is.  Allen has struggled with health issues most of his career, as well.  If Doyle leaves, we have Swoope and Allen as the only 2 TEs on the roster -- which to me is not 'deep' by any means.

I'd like to see Doyle brought back, but only if it's at a reasonable price.  There is no reason we need to be breaking the bank for him.  I am sure we can draft or find a FA at TE that isn't going to be a major drop off from Doyle.  That said, if he leaves, we definitely have a need for TE.

You mean like Grigson did for Allen last year? I didn't agree with that move when it happened. Doyle, IMO, is a better player than Allen especially when you consider that he stays healthy. I think Doyle is also a great influence to have on the team and in the locker room. To me, that adds to his value. But that's just me. Doyle is worth keeping at the price Allen got last year. JMO

I agree on Butler & Doyle, but I doubt Walden gets a new deal. He's had one good season & he's 31, hard to justify a new contract IMO.

Walden has been pretty steady since he got here. He had his best season this year no doubt with the 11 sacks. If he could be signed for reasonable I would be for bringing him back. But, I could also see Ballard wanting to go a different direction.

  16. 54 minutes ago, Defjamz26 said:

Apparently Grigson didn't want athletic LBs though. He drafted guys like Andrew Jackson, Amarlo Herrera, and Antonio Morrison who are all the same type of LB. slow phone booth tacklers who couldn't cover. And his FAs like D. Jackson and Muamba were the same. And I agree that every team wants a young roster but under Grigson there were 1-2 seasons where the Colts had the oldest roster in the NFL. Saying and doing are two different things but I think Ballard mindset is diff in regards to how to build a team.

    2. You misunderstand me. I never said his digging for players hurt or cost us. I simply brought it up to demonstrate part of Grigson's philosophy. As noted every team does it to an extent but he placed a greater emphasis on it than most, and I just don't think it's something that Ballard will do at much.

    3. Again you misunderstand me. I wasn't saying anything about how Grigson handled character issues. I'm saying that Ballard just might have a different approach. I was thinking more Marcus Peters than Tyreek Hill. And he may not take guys with domestic violence issues completely off his board since that was the case with Tyreek.

    4. Regardless if he's the new guy, the Colts are his team now. He could have come in and gave a stereotypical answer but he didn't. We have some young guys we just drafted in defense. He could have just said "we're trending in the right direction " or something generic like that. I appreciate it is all.

All good points. Grigson needed to go. He ran this roster into the ground the last two years. I said a number of times, if you miss on your first round picks it will cost you your job. Grigson missed on Richardson, Dorsett and Werner. 3 out of 5 1st rounders and his 2013 draft was so bad he couldn't recover from it. Not only that but his FA signings did not pan out like they needed to.

I think it really depends on how this draft and FA goes. A guy like Langford may be gone in favor of youth. But even someone young like Green COULD be shown the door if he decides to re-vamp the safety position.

This guy reminds me of another Colt Safety who was drafted fairly high and never did pan out....Idrees Bashir

Langford is a tough one. He's produced in the past. Green, honestly I think this guy was a mistake from the get go. I don't think he'll amount to anything.

  19. 9 hours ago, Defjamz26 said:

Yup. It wouldn't surprise me. Like the poster you responded to said, no one on defense is really safe. There isn't one guy who has absolutely proven that they're a keeper. Even the young guys on cheap rookie deals. We could have an entirely new starting defense in September.

It's possible we have several free agents on defense anyway. I doubt we see many of our current FA's re-signed.

Jack Doyle, Darius Butler and Erik Walden all deserve new contracts. One could make a case for Mike Adams getting a 1 year deal but I bet Ballard decides to go with youth there.

Art Jones and Patrick Robinson are logical choices to be let go. I think everyone else is safe. JMO

  20. 1) this made a lot of sense money wise

    2) Edwin Jackson is going to be a darn good LB for this team

    3) Ive said a number of times, inside linebackers are not hard to find in this league if you know what you are doing. Solid ILB's are not like trying to find a DE, OLB, CB etc

    4) I agree with others, Jones should be next and Gore may follow
